Many health workers come to work sick – Study finds

A new study has found that many doctors, nurses, midwives and physicians assistants come to work sick even though they know it puts patients at risk.

It further revealed that many said they don’t call in sick because they don’t want to let colleagues or patients down by taking a sick day, and they were concerned about finding staff to cover their absence.

Survey responses from 536 doctors and advanced practice clinicians at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, was analysed by Julia E. Szymczak and colleagues.

It was found that over 95% believed that working while sick puts patients at risk, but 83% still said they had come to work with symptoms like diarrhea, fever and respiratory complaints during the previous year.

About 9% had worked while sick at least five times over the previous year, and doctors were more likely than nurses or physicians assistants to work while sick.

Analyzing their comments, the researchers found that many report extreme difficulty finding coverage when they’re sick, and there is a strong cultural norm to come in to work unless extraordinarily ill.

The findings were reported in JAMA Pediatrics.

Study co-author Dr. Jeffrey R. Starke of the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston said sick health care workers present a real risk for patients, especially ones who are immunocompromised, like cancer patients or transplant patients.

He added that most hospitals do not have a specific policy restricting ill healthcare workers, and developing and enforcing these policies may help address the issue.

Starke further pointed out that side from spreading illness in the hospital, sick doctors likely perform worse on the job than healthy ones.

NIGERIA: Shared funds not from Excess Crude Account –Presidency

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 5 Second

The Presidency has denied reports that it is set to empty Nigeria’s Excess Crude Account (ECA) in order to fund a recently announced bailout for states to enable them pay salaries.

Presidential media aide, Femi Adesina made the clarification on Tuesday, July 7, 2015 while describing the report as incorrect.

Adesina stated that the ECA balance was intact and that the funds to be used for the bailout would be drawn from dividends paid to the Federation Account by the NLNG.

“The measures approved by President Buhari definitely do not include drawing down the remaining balance in the Excess Crude Account or the “liquidation” of the account as some media outlets have wrongly reported,” Adesina said.

“No such decision has been taken or approved by President Buhari, and last week’s meeting of the National Economic Council clearly concluded that the Excess Crude Account should be left untouched at this time,” he added.

“Last week’s meeting of the national economic council clearly concluded that the Excess Crude Account should be left untouched at this time,” Adesina said.

Buhari, on July 6, approved a three-pronged bailout package which will also include a debt relief programme designed by the Debt Management Office (DMO).

GHANA: Ruling party reclaims parliamentary seat in by-election

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 2 Second

Ghana's ruling party reclaimed a parliamentary seat from the main opposition on Tuesday in a closely contested by-election seen by both parties as a referendum on President John Mahama's rule ahead of a national election in 2016.

The ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) will view its victory in the rural Talensi seat in Upper East region as evidence that it remains viable heading into the December 2016 election season after a series of setbacks.

Mahama's government won election in 2012 but is facing power shortages that cause prolonged electricity blackouts that have angered voters and hurt businesses.

It has also been forced into an aid programme with the International Monetary Fund in an attempt to restore fiscal stability and jumpstart rapid GDP growth. [ID:nL8N0ZG42S]

Growth has slowed sharply since 2014 due to a fall in global commodity prices for the country's exports of gold, oil and cocoa and a fiscal crisis viewed by many as the result of government mismanagement of the macro-economy. [ID:nL8N0ZJ38H]

In addition, severe flooding and a fire in June in the capital led to the deaths of 150 people.

The disaster was the worst in the West African country in decades and exposed infrastructure problems in what was until 2014 one of Africa's fastest-growing economies.

The next election, when Mahama is set to take on opposition leader Nana Akufo-Addo, will be a repeat of 2012, and analysts say it will be closely contested. Ghana has one of the most stable democracies in a region that experiences regular changes of power.

The NDC's Benson Tongo Baba won 42.3 percent of the vote in Talensi to beat the New Patriotic Party's Wuni Thomas Buanab who obtained 27.9 percent, the Electoral Commission said.

Six other contestants from smaller political parties won the rest. Turnout was 64.2 percent. The by-election will not change the balance of power in parliament where the ruling party now holds a majority of about 27 seats.

The seat became vacant after the opposition representative resigned to become a chief. Chiefs are an integral part of Ghana's system of authority, and the law bars them from engaging in partisan politics.

The by-election was peaceful, except for sporadic clashes between loyalists of the two rival parties that drew intervention by the police and army, poll observers said.
