Marriage Of Convenience: ‘My Nigerian husband only married me for visa’ – British woman

Read Time:4 Minute, 35 Second

A British woman, Deana Charles has told the Sun UK how a 25-year-old Nigerian boy named Ben, married her after just six months of meeting him on social media just so that he could get a visa, popularly called 'green card' in this part.

Charles said she was humiliated, degraded and taken for a ride by the sharp 'Naija' student who hit on her while a student in the UK and seeing that his student visa was about to expire, he saw in her a ticket for her stay and had to get on with the sham marriage, especially when she found out half an hour after their wedding that the guy was busy texting some love messages to another woman.

Deana, a Sales assistant from Tiverton, Devon, said she met Ben on a dating site in 2010 and was instantly attracted to his looks and was hooked after he struck up a flirty conversation with her; he proposed to her after six months.

Hear her:

"My whole world came crashing down when I found out my marriage was a fake. I loved Ben with all my heart. We’d made loads of plans for the future and he seemed desperate to start a family

"I wasn’t serious about finding love, I’d only signed up for a bit of a laugh. As soon as I saw Ben’s picture, though, I was smitten. He had gorgeous brown eyes and a great body — just my type. We started chatting and he explained he’d come to the UK from Nigeria to study for a business degree.

I couldn’t imagine being so far away from my family and friends and I told him he was really brave.

When we finally met after so much pressure from him, it was the perfect first date. Ben took me to see Big Ben and we went to the National Maritime Museum in Greenwich. As soon as we shared our first kiss, I could feel myself falling for him.

He asked me to stay for a few days and I said yes. It felt like I’d known him for ages.

After a fleeting visit home to pick up some belongings, I agreed to move in with Ben in Catford, South East London.

I was surprised when he asked me to move in with him so soon but I was also really excited. But my mum was really concerned that I was giving up everything for someone I’d only just met. Some of my friends said the same.

No one was completely sure of him. I just shrugged off their concerns because I was convinced he was the right man for me.

Ben asked me to marry him six months later while we were having breakfast at home. It wasn’t very romantic. He didn’t even get down on one knee, but he did buy me an imitation diamond ring. I was shocked he wanted to marry me so soon but I was completely in love.

The wedding was at a register office in January 2012, with a low-key reception at a local Chinese restaurant.

My family were concerned but they all turned out and supported me. When I walked down the aisle Ben told me I looked stunning. And I meant every word of my vows.

He was reluctant to get his phone out. He eventually agreed to call his mum but when I looked over his shoulder at the screen, a message flashed up from a girl. She’d texted Ben to tell him she loved and missed him.

My legs turned to jelly as I remembered she was his ex-girlfriend in Nigeria. I was in pieces but Ben begged me for another chance. He said he’d only text her because of last-minute nerves. I didn’t want to storm out of my wedding so, after lots of tears, I let it go.

I wanted to wait a few years before getting pregnant as I was still worried about the message. But Ben was determined to be a dad. I thought it was his way of showing he was serious. We tried for a baby but we struggled to conceive."

But 13 months into their marriage, Deana borrowed Ben’s laptop and her worst fears were confirmed.

"My heart stopped when I saw he’d been sending messages to a girl on a social network site and she had sent him explicit pictures. Ben told her he loved her and wanted a baby with her.  Minutes later, I received a message from the girl – she felt so guilty, she’d messaged me to come clean.

When he realised there was no way back, he told me he’d only married me for a visa. It explained why he’d been so keen to get me pregnant, the authorities would find it harder to deport him."

Distraught Deana packed her bags, fled home to Devon the next day and filed for divorce. After two years, Ben finally agreed to it.

"I felt relieved. Looking back, I realise how naive I was. Ben was due to finish his degree when he proposed, which meant his student visa would expire. He had to get me up the aisle as soon as possible."

The president had come under severe criticism for remaining silent on the crisis which crippled services in the country.

18-yr-old boy turns himself to police after raping 91-yr-old woman

An 18-year-old boy from the United Kingdom, Kriss Strachan, was so full of repulsion for his act of raping a 91-year-old woman that he reported himself to the police, reports Mirror.

And as a reward for his effort, Strachan has been sentenced to 12 years imprisonment after he pleaded guilty to the crime and told the judge he was so ashamed of what he did.

Police reports that when Strachan walked into the station, he said:

"It was me. I cannot believe I done it. I’m scum."

The elderly woman was left with serious injuries following the attack, but the bigger damage was done to her mental state, according to the report.

Prior to the assault, the woman was described as active and independent, the court heard.

The Judge, Lord Boyd, told the teenager that even though he did the right thing and turned himself in, he still posed a significant risk to the public, and in particular elderly women.

Following 12 years in prison, Strachan will then be supervised for the next 7 years.

Tunisian soldier shot dead after killing seven in army base shooting spree

Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

TUNIS (Reuters) – A Tunisian soldier opened fire at a military base in the capital on Monday, killing seven colleagues and wounding 10 others before being shot dead himself, according to the army which said the shooter had "family problems".

What exactly triggered the shooting at the Bouchoucha base in Tunis was not immediately clear, but the incident alarmed residents in the capital city still on edge after an attack in March by Islamist gunmen on the Bardo national museum.

When gunfire erupted on Monday morning, police evacuated a nearby school, as locals feared they may be under attack.

"A soldier opened fire and killed seven others, he was then killed. Ten others are injured," army spokesman Bel Hassen Ouslati told reporters.

"According to what we know, he had some family problems, this is nothing to do with a terrorist attack."

Two military helicopters hovered over the scene as police searched cars on the road to the base. An army colonel was among the victims, a security source said.

Since its 2011 uprising against autocrat Zine El-Abidine Ben Ali, Tunisia has been spared the worst chaos that neighbouring countries experienced after the "Arab Spring". But some Islamist hardliners have turned to violence.

Tunisian forces have been carrying out operations against Islamist fighters since March when two gunmen opened fire on tourists at the Bardo museum, killing 21 foreigners in the worst attack in Tunisia in more than a decade.

6 jailed for sharing taxi with Ebola infected corpse

Read Time:59 Second

For allegedly travelling in a taxi with an Ebola-infected corpse, 6 people have been put in isolation in prison in Guinea.

Reports say the body, which was the corpse of a police recruit from Forecariah town towards Conakry, was seated upright in a taxi, dressed in a T-shirt and jeans with sunglasses and sandwiched between three others.

They were subsequently stopped at an Ebola checkpoint where security officials became suspicious when the seemingly well-dressed passenger remained motionless.

This was made known by the head of Guinea's Ebola response, Dr Sakoba Keita who added that it is such actions that account for the continued spread of the Ebola epidemic.

The 6 will be observed and if after 21 days  they show no signs of having the virus they will be tried for violating the health emergency.

Guinea is battling to control a flare up in Ebola cases and according to BBC, just 9 days ago only 9 patients were in Ebola treatment centres countrywide, but now that number has risen to nearly 30 cases.

Guinea has accounted for over 2,500 deaths since the beginning of the deadly Ebola virus outbreak.

NIGERIA: ‘Osinbajo is misleading Nigerians,’ PDP says

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 35 Second

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused Vice President-elect, Yemi Osinbajo of misleading Nigerians as regards the country’s debt profile.

Osinbajo had said on Wednesday, May 20, 2015, that President Goodluck Jonathan is leaving behind a debt profile of $60 billion for the incoming administration of President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari.

PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh however criticized Osinbajo for not revealing that most of the debt was incurred by APC-run states.

Metuh made the comments via a statement released on Monday, May 25, 2015.

It reads:

"It is indeed unfortunate that the Vice President-elect who has the details of the debt stock chose to be economical with the truth and to mislead Nigerians just to discredit the current PDP-led administration and rationalize APC’s unpreparedness for governance.”

“Prof. Osinbajo is aware that the $63.7 billion is made up of external and domestic debts belonging not only to the Federal Government but to federal and state governments and accumulating since the 1960s, yet he deliberately misrepresented the facts to give the unsuspecting public the impression that the amount was exclusively incurred by the current Federal Government.”

“Perhaps the Vice President-elect avoided the details so as not to expose the fact that the APC controlled Lagos state has both the highest external debt stock of $1,169, billion as well as the highest domestic debt stock of N278, 867 billion.”

“Furthermore we find it unacceptable and unstatesmanly for the Vice President-elect to attempt to mislead Nigerians into believing that the total federal debt component was accumulated under the President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration, when it is on record that a greater chunk of the amount was inherited.”

Metuh also urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to stop making excuses and deliver on its campaign promises to citizens of the country.

Read Time:49 Second

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Board of Trustees (BoT) has chosen former Defence Minister, Haliru Bello Mohammed as its acting Chairman.

Mohammed was appointed on Monday, May 25, 2015 at the BoT meeting in Abuja.

The appointment was announced by Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, at the end of the meeting.

Ekweremadu explained that Mohammed was the only nominee for the position and would act as BoT Chairman until a permanent appointment is made.

He also said that the party would soon arrange for a meeting where a new National Chairman and a substantive BoT Chairman would be appointed.

Former National Chairman, Adamu Mu’azu resigned on May 20, 2015, and former BoT Chairman, Tony Anenih followed suit.
