A sick Indiana, USA man, Joseph Oberhansley, has been arrested on charges ranging from rape, sexual assault, murder and cannibalism after he allegedly killed his girlfriend after raping her, and went ahead to eat her internal organs, the Indiana police report.

The 34-year-old Oberhansley was charged with murder and abuse of a corpse in the murder 46-year-old Tammy Jo Blanton after he reportedly confessed to the police that he broke into his girlfriend’s house, killed her and then ate her organs.

Since his arrest, Oberhansley has been held in a maximum security cell 23 hours a day in solitary confinement.

When Oberhansley was informed of the latest rape charge, he denied the allegations, saying in court that he has too much honor and integrity and is also too handsome to have sexually assaulted his former girlfriend.

President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari has promised Nigerians that he will not betray or disappoint them.

Buhari also thanked citizens of the country for voting for him despite the many odds they faced.

The President-elect made the comments on Wednesday, May 6, 2015, while receiving a delegation of All Progressives Congress (APC) supporters from Taraba State in Abuja

“I assure you that the government that the APC will eventually put in place will be effective.  We will never betray the people because people risked everything; some lost their lives for this cause to make sure that they voted the leadership they believe in, the leadership they trust in this multi-party democracy,” Buhari said.

He also urged the APC governorship candidate of Taraba, Aisha Alhassan not to give up on her bid to be governor.

“Aisha, don’t give up. You are younger and this is your first attempt. I contested three times and this is my fourth attempt. I hope that you succeed in court. I hope you will win in the court,” the President-elect said.

Alhassan lost to Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Darius Ishaku in the rerun governorship elections which held on Saturday, April 25, 2015.

She however described the result as daylight robbery and has challenged it before the state election tribunal.

Ovarian Cancer Regular blood tests could help detect disease early, research suggests

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 28 Second

Regular blood tests can detect 86% of ovarian cancers before the point at which women normally would be diagnosed, BBC reports.

This has been revealed by a trial that could lead to national screening.

According to the first results of the 14-year trial of more than 46,000 women conducted by a University College London team, it is suggested that tumours can be detected early.

Ovarian tumours are often deadly as they are caught too late owing to their symptoms, including abdominal pain, persistent bloating and difficulty eating, that are common in other conditions.

Ovarian tumours spew out high levels of a chemical called CA125, which is already used as a test if patients have symptoms.

According to BBC, the UK Collaborative Trial of Ovarian Cancer Screening performed annual blood tests on post-menopausal women across 13 NHS Trusts, tracking changes in the levels of CA125 over time and if levels became elevated then the women were sent for further tests including an ultrasound scan.

The trial results, published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, showed 86% of cancers were picked up.

Speaking on the discovery, Prof Usha Menon, from University College London said:

"It's good, but the truth lies in whether we've picked up the cancer early enough to save lives, we hope we have. There is no screening at the moment so we are awaiting the results before the NHS can decide. Many people would have to be screened so it really needs to translate to lives saved."

The mortality data is expected later in the year.

Meanwhile, researchers are hopeful that the prospect of blood tests detecting ovarian cancer early is a good one, as early detection could increase chances of survival.

NIGERIA: PDP Chairman blasts Fayose over betrayal claims

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 3 Second

The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Adamu Mu’azu has criticized Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose for accusing him of betraying the party.

Fayose earlier alleged that Mu’azu had sold the PDP out the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the recently held general elections.

The governor also said he could produce cogent evidence to back up his claims.

In response, however, Mu’azu challenged Fayose to produce the evidence by referring to a previous claim the governor made concerning President-elect, Muhammadu Buhari’s ill-health.

“Fayose: I have evidence that Muazu worked for APC. We hope it's not the kind of evidence he once said he had that Buhari was dying?” Muazu tweeted on Thursday, May 7, 2015.

“You will all recall that the National Chairman warned members of our Presidential Campaign Org to stop the hate campaign. We challenge Governor Fayose to come out with the evidence that shows National Chairman worked for APC during the elections,” he added.

Fayose and other members of the PDP have mounted pressure on Mu’azu and members of the  National Working Committee (NWC) to resign following the party’s defeat at the polls.

AFGHANISTAN: Military and police battle Taliban for region

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 24 Second

Afghanistan forces have launched a major fight against Islamist militant group, Taliban in a battle for the north-eastern provincial capital of Kunduz.

The fight reportedly includes the Afghan army and police, but there is no substantial help from foreign troops. North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) forces have also reportedly turned down several requests to assist with air strikes.

In the same vein, provincial governor Mohammed Omer Safi has said the Afghan forces do not have enough air power and their helicopters lacked the armaments they should have.

BBC reports that the Taliban have come close to the city in recent fighting, leaving it cut off with tens of thousands of displaced.

Reports from Afghan officials say foreign jihadists trained by the Islamic State (IS) group are fighting alongside the Taliban.

Security forces and Taliban have reportedly been involved in a standoff for about a week after the insurgents launched an offensive on Kunduz at the end of April.

According to BBC correspondent, David Loyn, this fight is the first positive confirmation by a senior government official that ISIS are operating alongside the Taliban in Afghanistan, as prior to this point, ISIS fighters have often clashed with the Taliban especially in the south of the country.

Meanwhile, the bodies of 18 foreign fighters, including 2 women, were found after recent fighting.

The fight has also displaced many people across the city and rural areas of the province of Kunduz.

Also being a region that supplies half of Afghanistan's rice crop, Governor Safi has said that  if the fighting goes on in Kunduz, it could have a far-reaching impact beyond the lives affected in only that region.

The 26-year-old suspect, a graduate of Business Administration, was one of three suspects who were arrested by the police after they kidnapped a 62-year-old business woman, Kudirat Adeboye, in the Ajah area of the state.

Alani told the police that , said but for abduction, he would not have been able to graduate from the polytechnic.

Hear him:

"Before I graduated, I was working as a casual worker with the former Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN). My financial situation became unbearable to my friend, the late Niyi.

He promised he would assist me to get a job. He told me the type of business and I agreed to join. I badly needed the money."

Alani whose job was to keep watch over the victims they kidnapped, explained that his family members did not know what he did for a living or how he got his money.

Luckily for the 62-year-old victim, she was rescued in her abductors' den at Akodo area of the state after she was kidnapped at Akodo bus stop, on Eleko Epe Expressway on April 16.

Other suspects arrested alongside the graduate suspect are Ifeanyi Chukwuleta, 25, and Rasheed Adetunji, 28.

The state police said that after the disappearance of the victim, her family members raised a search party and also alerted the Akodo Police Station.

The kidnappers had directed the victim’s son to bring the ransom to the road where one of them would meet him from the bush. Unknown to them, the police had trailed the man to the drop zone and moments after the kidnapper came out of the bush to collect the ransom, hidden policemen surfaced and shot him to death after he opened fire on the security operatives.
