Boko Haram terrorists reportedly killed eleven people in Gwoza town, Borno state on Wednesday, April 15.

Punch reports that a military source in Maiduguri confirmed the attack.

According to the source, the victims were civilians, who were recently rescued by soldiers during the recapture of the town from the Boko Haram terrorists.

“It was unfortunate that while they were kept at a supposed safer place at the base of the hill, with some (military) troops stationed there to guard them, some Boko Haram men struck on Wednesday, and killed at least 11 of the people,” said the source.

The source said the civilians had, during the long reign of the insurgents in the Borno town, stayed on the mountain but were evacuated by the military on the liberation of Gwoza.

‘Corrupt INEC officials robbed APC of victory in Rivers’ – Lawmaker alleges

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 15 Second

The lawmaker representing Emohua constituency in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Chidi Lloyd has said his party, All Progressives Congress (APC), did not lose in the keenly contested elections in the state but robbed of its victory.

Lloyd, who is the Majority Leader in Rivers State House of Assembly and seeking fourth term bid into the state legislature, said this in reaction to the cancellation of the State House of Assembly election in his LG.

“We campaigned to the voters on our pedigree and we convinced the voters to vote for APC but little did we know that they had some corrupt officials of the INEC who were sent here with a script on what to do in Rivers state. And the Resident Electoral Commissioner shamelessly came here to supervise this kind of social ebola that has taken place in Rivers state.

“If in a local government area two elections were conducted simultaneously what was the premise on which one was announced and the other cancelled. That is what I keep telling people at different fora that what happened in Rivers state on the 28th of March and on the 11 of April are just a political telemundo.

“An election that has been acclaimed by the national and international observers to be flawed with violence; in fact one of the groups said the election did not meet the minimum requirement set by the INEC, yet a cooked result was announced,” Lloyd said.

Man calls police after realising he’s babysitting a kidnapped child

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 24 Second

Another strange kidnapping story is in the news, this time not from Nigeria, but from Washington, USA. But the good part is that the 2-year-old at the center of it is safe and sound. Beyond that, things get weird; a man babysitting the boy called 911 to report his whereabouts after seeing an Amber Alert. The key developments:

The kidnapping: On Tuesday, police say that Alyssa Chang, 46, and Vien Nguyen, 65, kidnapped toddler Ronnie Tran and his mother from their home in Des Moines, Wash. Chang is the girlfriend of the boy’s father, and Nguyen is his paternal grandmother, reports ABC News.

The babysitter: After the boy’s mother was tasered and tied up in a garage (she would eventually escape on her own, the Seattle Times reports), police say Chang brought the boy to her brother’s home in Renton and innocently asked him to babysit.

The brother, John Truong, tells KOMO-TV that he didn’t know anything was amiss until the next morning when he saw the Amber Alert.

The surprise: “I’m eating my breakfast, I’m checking my Facebook, all of a sudden I see this Amber Alert for this child,” he says. “And it looks like this child in my bed, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God! What’s going on?'” He called police, who soon tracked down his sister and Nguyen. Both face felony charges.

The bottom line: “There’s a lot of family dynamics involved,” says a police official. “As far as why, we can only speculate.”

Zimbabwe makes first practical move to evacuate citizens from South Africa

0 0
Read Time:57 Second

The country’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Isaac Moyo, has said plans are in motion to evacuate about 1,000 Zimbabweans living in South Africa.

"Identification and processing of repatriation documents has already been done. It is very sad. Most people do not have any documentation. They don't have any clothes apart from what they are wearing. Many of them left all their clothes and property behind. We are documenting people. This process means that we are giving them some sort of documentation to use upon returning to Zimbabwe. We are organising some buses to take them from Durban to Beit Bridge (the border between South Africa and Zimbabwe). Then they will be taken from Beit Bridge to their home provinces. We would want (the departure) to be as soon as possible. People are currently living in the most difficult conditions," Moyo told the state-owned Chronicle newspaper.

The Nigerian government had said earlier this week that it will evacuate Nigerians resident in South Africa if the violent attacks worsen.

Kenya, Mozambique and Malawi have also announced they would help their citizens return home.

NIGERIA: Supreme Court sacks lawmaker over defection

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

The Supreme Court on Friday, April 14, ordered an Ondo State lawmaker, Ifedayo Abegunde, representing Akure South/North Federal Constituency, to vacate his seat following his defection from Labour Party (LP) to the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN).

A Seven-man panel of Justices of the court, headed by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, declared that Abegunde is not fit to remain at the legislative house, noting that the lawmaker acted illegally by abandoning the party that sponsored his election.

It said that the lawmaker’s defection to another party would have been justified if there was a division in the national structures of the LP, such that is capable of impeding the smooth operation of the party.

The Supreme Court stated that the “division” or “factionalisation” of Labour Party, which was cited by the lawmaker as his excuse for abandoning the party, was only at the state level.

Abegunde was elected into the parliament on the platform of the ruling Labour Party (LP) in the April  2011 general elections, but defected to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) after a few months in  the House.

Labour Party subsequently began a recall process against him and approached the court to sack the decampee lawmaker in order for the party to reclaim his seat.

The lawmaker also filed a counter motion seeking judicial protection against his recall by the Ondo State House of Assembly.

‘I once hawked ice water and minerals,’ Wazobia FM OAP reveals

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

Popular Wazobia FM on-air personality, Steve Onu aka Yaw, has revealed his grass to grace story on his Instagram account.

The actor cum writer, whose productions include Yaws N Myn and Yaw's PO, recently narrated his own #MySuperStarStory saying he once sold ice water at Yaba market, did bus conductor once in a while just to survive with a friend called Mutiu.

In his words, "It started from being the 7th child out of ten from Anambra State and heading to Lagos State University for a diploma course in 1995/1996.  I began to hustle and do shows and finally, I went back for a degree course in 2000. I remember when I decided that I would study Theatre Arts, everyone saw me as a #useless person.

"I have a diploma in #Radio, #Television and Film Production while my degree was in Theatre Arts. A cousin took me to a welders shop to go learn, #Refused, he said i should go to mechanic workshop to learn how to repair cars but I refused and finally he said the last help he would do for me was to learn how to fix motor cycle 'Okada' and in his words he says that was where my destiny lies; well I had to sell things to survive.

"I sold ice water at Yaba market, did bus conductor once in a while just to survive with a friend called Mutiu. Joining the movie industry wasn't easy in 1995, I remember days of walking from Kilo to Fadeyi or walk from Utziz Garden near 23rd to Mile 2, and take a bus to Oshodi from there to take Molue to Iyana Ipaja & from the bus stop; I’d trek to my aunt’s place in Alimosho.

I just give God the glory for the good things he has done for me. I won’t say it is little, especially when I compare it to where I am coming from. I am better off now, from hawking ‘ice water and mineral’ soft drinks at Yaba Market to Representing Africa at the 2012 Olympic where i lifted the torch to riding cars.
