NIGERIA: Ndigbo do not hate Buhari – Umeh

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 33 Second

He assured Buhari that the Ndigbo did not hate him but voted for President Goodluck Jonathan ‘’because he assured us that he would implement the report of the national conference.’’

‘’Buhari should not see Ndigbo as his enemies. The Igbos were looking for somebody who will address the problem of marginalisation since the end of the war.’’

He said that the zone had suffered marginalization for a long time and needed a president ‘’who will help to rehabilitate the Igbo people after what they suffered during the war.

‘’We pray that God will use Buhari to address our plight,’’ he said, promising that Ndigbo would support his administration, if he could address issues affecting them.

He further urged Jonathan to reward Ndigbo for their support for his administration by ensuring that the people were allowed to elect leaders of their choice.

The APGA national chairman alleged that the people’s vote in the March 28 election did not count because the ruling People’s Democratic Party used the military and other security operatives to subvert the wishes of the people expressed through the ballot.

‘’The only way Jonathan can reciprocate the support of the Igbo people is to allow them to elect governors and law makers of their choice.’’

He further urged him not to support the incumbent PDP governors to foist their surrogates on the people as their successors.

He said that the unit results of the last election showed that the people voted massively for APGA but expressed regret that the votes did not count due to a “high powered conspiracy to manipulate the results by PDP, along with some officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and security operatives.

‘’What we saw during the March 28 poll was total militarization of the entire electoral process in the South- East, which provided a safe ground for PDP-government to rig the results in their favour,’’ he said.

Umeh also spoke on the quality of the party’s flag-bearer in Abia, Dr. Alex Otti, describing him as ‘’the best candidate the party can offer the state.

‘’Otti is the best suitable candidate to revamp Abia,’’ he said, adding that ‘’Otti has the managerial capability and the reach to transform the state.

‘’I call on all Abia people to look inward and elect the best hand for the governorship position,’’ he said, urging them not to succumb to intimidation during the April 11 polls.

‘’APGA is desperately looking for capable hands to support Gov. Willie Obiano of Anambra to rebuild the Igboland and Otti is one of such materials.’’

He said that with the defeat of the PDP at the national level, it was time for Ndigbo to form a formidable support for the emergence of APGA governors, who could help to rebuild the area.

Echoes from Lagos residents on elections

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 39 Second

Being the second fastest-growing city in Africa and the seventh in the world, with a population of over 21 million habitants, the Presidential and Federal legislature elections hindered several activities of the state. The Governorship and State House of Assembly election coming up in four days time will also be the major activity this week.

Due to the importance of the elections, several businesses have not been able to operate optimally and have not drawn a budget due to the uncertainty of the new government.

Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos, last week at a forum said that with the state of things in the country, every hands should be on the pump to build the country. Fashola who spoke at the Ikoyi residence of the national leader of the , Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, said the two main parties ran a very fierce campaign in the build up to the March 28 elections.

“I think both sides ran a very fierce campaign. So you can imagine as they say: The fiercer the conflict, the sweeter the victory but what is important now is building Nigeria really and so it is every hand to the pump really,” he said.

During the weekend, the governor also said that the state needs support from the federal government in several sectors and departments. “When Lagos was the capital, it used to get support for bridges, roads, security, ecology, among others. In the last 16 years, all federal government roads were maintained by the state government. We have spent N51 billion to maintain federal assets in the state,” he affirmed.

The Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Akin Orebiyi said: “Again, INEC regrets this and at the same time we also at the right time allowed manual accreditation which was also to all parties and not just one. So to that extent, I don’t think a single party can now accuse INEC of undermining its fate at the expense of another. “We are going to look at the workings of the smart card readers, see where things had gone wrong, and look for ways to improve. We need to understand the guidelines for the conduct of elections,

“If for example, in a polling unit, there was something untoward, it is at that polling unit you raise objection. And by the time we take the results from the ward, you can also object there so that polling unit result will not be collated at the ward level.” Several residents of Lagos aired their views about the March 28 elections and the upcoming governorship election this Saturday.

Ogenekhewe Onovre who lives in Victoria Garden City said: “The Presidential and National Assembly Election went well in some parts of Lagos, but there were several hitches in my own area. The election did not commence till 3pm. People living in VGC were requested to come with flashlight before voting as darkness enveloped the polling centre and INEC officials could not make out the names on the list. “What can we do? We had to bring the lights to fulfil our civic duties and it is our right to vote.

Save us from attacks, Nigerians in South Africa urge Jonathan, Buhari

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 37 Second

The President of  the Nigerian Union in South Africa, Mr Ikechukwu Anyene, on Wednesday urged the Federal Government to help halt the  xenophobic attacks on Nigerians in that country.

Anyene told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on phone from Pretoria, South Africa, that the latest spate of  xenophobic  attacks began three weeks ago.

There are more than 800,000 Nigerians living in South Africa.

Anyene said Nigerians resident in some South African cities had gone into hiding to avoid being attacked by South Africans.

‘’ The Nigerian government should urgently intervene and save our people from the attacks.

‘’ They should prevail on the South African government to stop such attacks against Nigerians.

“ It appears nothing is being is done to stop the attacks and Nigerians are worried about the situation,’’ he said.

Anyene said during the attacks in Johannesburg last week, shops owned by Nigerians were looted and their owners seriously injured by the attackers.

He said the Nigerian Union in South Africa had been in touch with local chapters in some provinces and had  urged them to take precautionary measures to save themselves.

Anyene  said that since Nigeria and South Africa established diplomatic relations, there had not been a single incident of xenophobic attack  against South Africans living in Nigeria.

‘’ The Nigerian government protects  the lives and property of South Africans living in Nigeria .

“ We do not understand why from time to time, South Africans attack Nigerians in their country.

‘’ The Federal Government should take the issue of xenophobic attacks in South Africa very  seriously because Nigerians do not carry out  xenophobic attacks against fellow Africans,’’ he said.

Nigerians living in Durban, he said, had  planned a protest  march against the xenophobic  attacks.

He, however, said they were denied permit by the South African police.

Boko Haram: Reclaiming captured territories top priority — FG

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 35 Second

The Federal Government said that reclaiming territories held by insurgents in the North-East and establishment of an atmosphere of peace and safety in them remained its top priority.

Coordinator, National Information Centre, Mr Mike Omeri, stated this on Wednesday while giving update on the security situation in the zone at a news conference.

Omeri said that the successes recorded by troops in regaining control of Boko Haram strongholds in Borno were testimony of the unwavering commitment in defeating the insurgents.

He said recent recapture of Alagarno in Borno, a well-known strategic stronghold of Boko Haram, had dealt a severe blow on their capacity to carry out surprise attacks on communities in the state.

“In a situation such as presently exists in the area, there is a high tendency for the insurgent group to suddenly aim at soft targets to destabilise communities which are regaining normalcy.

“However, the Nigerian military has continued to bring the situation under control and also safeguard the lives and property of citizens, while humanitarian assistance is being provided by appropriate authorities.

“The centre, therefore, calls on Nigerians, particularly those living in the affected communities, to continue to support the efforts of our military and security forces at restoring normalcy in the area,’’ he said.

On the April 11 elections, Omeri urged Nigerians to be vigilant and cautious to ensure a peaceful and incident-free polls.

“Recall that in our statement on the eve of the Presidential and National Assembly elections, we reiterated to Nigerians the need to exercise the highest level of vigilance and also scrutinise the activities of unknown and strange persons within their environment.

“In respect of the forthcoming Governorship and State Assembly elections, we remind the citizens to maintain a similar level of vigilance and caution to ensure a peaceful and incident – free exercise,’’ he said.

Petrol crisis worsens in Abuja as commuters get stranded

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 38 Second

Abuja – The fuel scarcity that resurfaced in Abuja on Monday is biting harder as motorists in the city queue for hours at petrol filling stations in search of petrol.

The fuel queue disappeared from the stations immediately after March 28 elections.

The queue, which resurfaced on Monday in some of the stations, has spread across the city by Tuesday night.

It was observed that most of the filling stations that were having fuel before the Easter break had become dried.

Many commuters were stranded at different bus stops due to lack of commercial vehicles while the few ones that were plying the road jerked up their fare by 50 per cent.

Hawkers of petrol in jerry cans cashed in on the scarcity and sold the product between N150 and N200 per litre, depending on bargain power.

Many obscure filling stations, especially in Suleja and on Zuba-Gwagwalada Road, sold the product between N110 and N120 per litre which is far above the regulated rate.

Only petrol filling stations within the city and those belonging to major marketers in other areas dispensed petrol at the stipulated N87 per litre.

At the NNPC mega station on Olusegun Obasanjo Way, Central Area, long queues of vehicles were on three lanes, blocking the entire road and forcing motorists to drive against the traffic.

The situation was also the same at the Forte Oil, adjacent the NNPC mega station, where the queue stretched to the UAC fence early in the morning but later stopped selling.

The ConOil and Total filling stations opposite NNPC Headquarters were also selling with long queues.

The queue formed a circle round through the Bureau of Statistics Complex to the Unity Bank building back to NNPC Towers, Abuja.

ConOil station, NNPC franchised station and another private filling station on Olusegun Obasanjo way were not selling.

Most of the filling stations on Obafemi Awolowo Way were dried, except Oando at the junction of Wuse Zone 6, Mobil at Arab Junction and Eterna Oil filling station.

The situation was not different with most filling stations on Airport Road, AYA, Maraba, Kubwa , Suleja and other neighbouring towns.

Most motorists said they were having difficult time at filling stations before they could get fuel to buy.

A civil servant, Mr Abdullahi Abduwahab, said all efforts to get fuel previous night proved abortive as most of them refused to sell.

Abduwahab said he got to the office late in spite of waking up early to buy petrol.

Mrs Joan Nwoagu said she woke up by 5 a.m. to join the queue for petrol.

“When I discovered that the queue was long, I left and came back early this morning to buy fuel at ConOil opposite NNPC Headquarters,” she said.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and the department of Petroleum resources had attributed the situation to panic buying.

Mr Ohi Alegbe, NNPC spokesperson, had in a statement earlier, cautioned motorists against panic buying and stockpiling the products.

He said there was enough fuel in the stock that could last for months.

Mr Saidu Mohammed, the DPR spokesperson, also said the queue was due to panic buying. (NAN)

Court restrains Multichoice from increasing Pay TV, DSTV cost

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 30 Second

A Federal High Court in lkoyi has granted an order of interim injunction restraining Multichoice from enforcing its planned increase in cost of the different classes of viewing of its Pay TV, DSTV.

Granting the order, the presiding judge, Justice C. J. Aneke, asked parties to maintain status quo in support of the motion ex parte with an affidavit of urgency sworn to by the plantiff.

The order read in part: “That an order of interim injunction is hereby granted to the parties to maintain the status quo restraining the 1st defendant (Multichoice/DSTV) from giving effect or enforcing its planned increase in cost of the different classes of viewing or programmes bouquet, pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.”

“That an order is hereby granted certifying the plaintiffs’ claim as a class action for themselves as individual subscribers, other corporate subscribers, distributors and retailers of the 1st defendants’ services.

“That an order is hereby granted restraining any other person whether individual or corporate from instituting any other action as may be related to the action against the defendant to prevent multiplicity of lawsuits pursuant to the appointment of the plaintiffs in the class action but may instead opt in or out of this action.”

The suit was filed by Adebayo Osasuyi and Oluyinka Oyeniji, DSTV subscribers/customers.

It will be recalled that MultiChoice, owners of DStv and GOtv, had announced a 20 percent price increase for all its satellite pay TV bouquets in Nigeria to take effect from April 1, 2015.

MultiChoice claimed that the annual price increase, usually in-line with inflation, is necessary for it to continue offering the best in local and international entertainment to its subscribers.

The matter was adjourned to April 16, 2015 for hearing.

Civil War would have ended ealier if Ojukwu had acted like Jonathan – Danjuma

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 9 Second

Abuja – Former Minister of Defense, General Theophilus Danjuma, Wednesday, said that if former Biafran warlord, Chukwuemeka Ojukwu had behaved like President Jonathan by conceding defeat, the civil war would have been avoided.

Speaking shortly after a closed door meeting with President Jonathan, General Danjuma said the president has set a record in the history of the country by his act.

The meeting between Jonathan and General Danjuma was held behind closed door at General Danjuma’s residence in Asokoro.

According to General Danjuma, if Ojukwu had done the same thing after the fall of Enugu, when his government had to flee into the bush, he would have saved the country from bloodshed.

“The outcome of the election and the manner in which President Jonathan conceded victory to Buhari, is total un-African, it is very important in the history of Africa.

“Ojukwu did the same after the fall of Enugu, if he had conceded victory to the federal troops he would have saved the nation one full year of bloodshed.

“President Jonathan has set a record, made history, something to be emulated by the rest of Africa and indeed the whole world.”

Jonathan’s meeting with Danjuma was part of  his consultation with relevant stakeholders across the country for a smooth transition of power to President elect, General Muhammadu Buhari on May 29.

Governor lists 10 questions Lagosians must answer before Saturday polls

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 16 Second

Ahead of the April 11 governorship and House of Assembly elections, politicians and political parties alike have embarked on last-minute campaigns – holding closed-door meetings, rallies and reinforcing their candidates' manifesto on social and traditional media  platforms.

As contained in a letter to Lagos state residents, Governor Babatunde Fashola has appealed to Lagosians to come out en masse and vote for their preferred candidates in the coming Saturday polls, listing 10 imperative questions every voter must answer before the final voting moment.

Fashola, who did not specifically recommend any political party or candidate, noted that it is crucial that the governor who will take his place must consolidate on the progress his administration has made in the state.

"Although your votes will be cast for one political party or the other, let me remind you that you will actually be voting for your wellbeing, security, prosperity and future.

"You will also be voting for the future of your children. You will be choosing candidates and a party that you will entrust your lives to," the letter read in part.

Fashola asked:

Who has shown a better record and example of protecting and securing you between the political parties?

Which of the parties cares more when disasters happen?

What is the record of the parties as it relates to the promises they have made to you in the past?

Which of the parties do you see regularly and which one do you see once in a while?

Which of the parties do you see when your life or property is threatened by epidemics like Ebola or by unfortunate accidents like plane crashes?

Which of the parties is showing that you can become home-owners without knowing anybody?

Which party has responsibility for providing electricity for you, and which one is taking up the responsibility to light up your streets and communities at night?

Which of them cares more about your children and their safety?

Indeed ask yourself; which of the parties threatened you with thugs on that sad Monday of March 16th and which is seeking to protect you by supporting the police; with patrol vehicles, fuel and other equipment?

Ask yourself who should be supporting the police and who is actually doing it?

"Dear Lagosians, your choice of who to vote for will be easy if you answer these questions within yourself honestly," he added.

The Governor also mentioned that only about 1.5 million people turned out to vote in Lagos on March 28, out of the 5.8 million registered voters and 3.8 million PVC collections, stressing the need for people to come out and vote this Saturday by all means.
