A branch of the Living Faith Church, popularly called the Winners Chapel, in Giwa, headquarters of Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State, has been set ablaze.

The church, founded by Bishop David Oyedepo, was reportedly set ablaze by two unidentified arsonists.

During the incident that happened on March 20, 2015 at about 2:30pm, nothing was saved from the church.

The burning of the church came a few months after the reported endorsement of President Goodluck Jonathan by Oyedepo.

A terse statement issued on Thursday in Abuja by the President of Tarayyar Masihiyawan Nijeria (Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri Christians), General Ishaku Ahmed Dikko (rtd), and the Director of National Issues of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Sunny Oibe, entitled: “Presidential Elections 2015: Signs of what to expect,” called on security agencies to act fast to avoid violence in the area.

According to Dikko and Oibe, the Christians in the North, particularly the Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri speaking Christians, who are indigenous in these states and live within and among their kith and kin, “are in serious jeopardy”.

The statement reads in full: “Giwa is the Headquarters of Giwa Local Government Area of Kaduna State. On Friday, 20 March, 2015 at about 2:30 pm, two (2) unknown hoodlums on a motorcycle drove into the premises of Living Faith Church (Winners Chapel) and set it ablaze.

“The Church was razed to the ground and nothing was saved from the Church including the building. This action surprised the Christian Community, especially the Church members, as there was no tension or any sign of it between Christians and Muslims in the town.

“It is, however, a known fact that the people of the Local Government have not been friendly with the Christian Community even though over 90 percent of them are of the same Huasa-Fulani indigenes.

“The incident actually became more worrisome when no effort was made by a passersby to assist in putting out the fire. In fact, it was a Fulani herdsman that saw the fire and reported to the Police Station. Only one Policeman and a Christian volunteer that ran to the scene and attempted to put out the fire but of course could not achieve anything.

“This situation and the circumstances surrounding the incidence are a cause of serious concern. If this can happen more than a week to the Presidential Elections, what shall we expect during or after the elections? Is this a sign of what to expect or a dress rehearsal of a repeat of 2011 Post – Election Violence? This is a wakeup call to the Federal, State and Local Government Authorities, especially the Security Agencies.

“The Christians in the North, particularly the Hausa, Fulani and Kanuri speaking Christians, who are indigenous in these States and live within and among their kith and kin are in serious jeopardy”.

President stops PDP from challenging Buhari’s victory

Read Time:1 Minute, 4 Second

President Goodluck Jonathan has reportedly put a halt to plans being made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to challenge the victory of All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Muhammadu Buhari in the recently concluded presidential elections.

Buhari emerged winner on Tuesday, March 31, and the PDP vowed to challenge the outcome of the polls citing irregularities.

According to The Nation however, the President has decided to raise a Transition Committee instead of heading to an election tribunal.

“The President has prevailed on PDP to drop plans to go to tribunal against Buhari. He said he wants his word to be his bond, having been applauded by the international community,” a source told The Nation.

“At a point, Jonathan said ‘I don’t believe in post-election petition at tribunal because it distracts the incoming administration’. He also said Nigeria must emulate other nations where once the presidential poll is lost and won, the new government must not be distracted with election petitions. He told party leaders that he was not interested in going to the tribunal. It is now left for PDP leaders to heed his advice,” the source added.

Jonathan conceded defeat after the election results were announced and congratulated his opponent via telephone.

‘Give priority to health sector,’ Stakeholders task Buhari

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 29 Second

They specifically urged the incoming administration to make maternal and child health a priority in order to reduce incidences of maternal and child mortality.

The stakeholders in a Media Engagement themed: "Putting Health Issues on the Election Front Burner in Lagos state’’, said that it will also help achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) four and five.

Chairman, House Committee on Health, Lagos state House of Assembly, Avoseh Hodewu-Suru, said that health services  very critical in any society as it had to do with human lives.

"Health services should be put in the front burner and I will task the incoming government to even do more than the current administration had done.

"Access to healthcare delivery should start from the Primary Health Centres (PHC).

"But due to apathy by some local government councils, most of the responsibilities have been shifted to the state and federal government.

"Lagos state has done a lot in the primary health level to reduce maternal and child mortality,’’ he said.

Hodewu stressed that the programme must be propelled by individuals that are well grounded in health matters.

"More qualified medical personnel have been stationed in the primary health facilities as well as the inauguration of Maternal and Childcare Centres (MCCs).

"Again, the idea of flagship PHCs came up and it was decided that all the 20 LGAs and 37 LCDAs must have at least one PHC, now we have about six flagship centres fully completed and handed over to their LGs.

"I would appeal to those that are going to be elected into offices, to build from what is already in place and make healthcare delivery to be effective, safe and accessible,’’ he said.

Politician’s body found in canal prior to standing trial for rape

Read Time:52 Second

The body of the late politician who went missing after hours he learnt he was to stand trial for rape has been found in a canal.

60-year old Steve Stevaert's bike and coat had been earlier found by the side of the Albert canal prompting police to comb the canal and eventually finding his body.

The late politician was a former leader of the Flemish Social Democrat party, and also served as mayor of the city of Hasselt and as a provincial governor.

Prior to Stevaert's disappearance and death, the spokeswoman for the Brussels prosecutor had announced that Stevaert was to be prosecuted for rape, indecent assault and abuse of office.

This was based on a complaint filed by the victim in 2013, although the case dated back to 2010 when both Stevaert and the alleged victim were guests on a television show.

While Stevaert had admitted that they had sexual relations, he denied rape.

Meanwhile, Belgian media is reporting that Stevaert killed himself, leaving a farewell letter behind.

Monarch escapes death as hoodlums invade palace

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 21 Second

The Alaagba of Aagba, Oba Rufus Ogunwole, narrowly escaped death as hoodlums invaded his palace and vandalised the building before destroying vehicles parked within the premises among other important items.

It was gathered that the hoodlums first stormed the palace on Wednesday evening and went back  later after destroying some valuables.

Not satisfied with the level of destruction at their first attempt, the miscreants, who were identified to be operating under the name of ‘Odo Oru’, which literally means night youths, returned to complete the destruction of the palace.

The youths, according to a palace source, carted away a crown, beaded walking stick and other paraphernalia of office of  the monarch before they left.

It was learnt that the attack on the palace and some other places inside the town had a deep political undertone.

Armed security personnel have beefed up security in the town and normalcy has since restored in the troubled community.

Several vehicles, including one Toyota Venza, and Toyota Camry were completely destroyed.

Houses of some chiefs in the community, including the residence  of Eesa of Aagba, Chief James Bamigbola, were  attacked and his car was also vandalised.

Oluseye Aborisade, a resident of the town, told reporters that the monarch was believed to be a leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, saying that was why he was attacked.

The Commissioner of Police in Osun State, Mr. Sam Okaula, confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with a reporter.

Okaula said 10 suspects had been arrested in connection with the violence, adding that they would be charged to court if found culpable.

Read Time:1 Minute, 40 Second

Chaos erupted Wednesday evening in Ibadan, when a Divisional Police Officer (DPO) and two other people were said to have been feared dead in Adekile Goodwill area of the metropolis.

The situation occurred after a fracas broke out in the community following the discovery of a kidnappers’ den in the area.

It was gathered that a child, who got missing in the community several days ago, was found in the underground apartment of the house.

The police was said to have been alerted on the development, which led to the arrest of the owner of the building.

The incident reportedly angered the youths in the community and they mobilised to destroy the building.

Three students expelled for racist rant on radio

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

A private college in Pennsylvania expelled three students over a campus radio broadcast in which they made racist comments and used a slur.

Bucknell University president John Bravman met with about 1,000 students and staff about the matter on Tuesday, a day after sending a late-night email revealing the expulsions.

“Their conduct is an affront to our values, damaging to our community and in clear violation of our community standards,” he wrote to students, faculty and staff on Monday.

Bravman did not identify the students but shared their comments from a March 20 WVBU-FM broadcast in “the interest of transparency and candor.”

He said one of the students used the N-word, a second said “black people should be dead” and the third said “lynch ‘em.”

Bucknell spokesman Andy Hirsch said an inmate a nearby prison heard the comments and reported them to a prisoner advocacy group, the Lewisburg Prison Project. The group then contacted a university faculty member, who alerted the radio station’s adviser.

Hirsch said the school’s senior staff investigated. The students were suspended and interviewed before the dean of students expelled them, he said.

“I would emphasize that the context really doesn’t matter once you see what was said,” Hirsch said.

Hirsch declined to say if alcohol was involved, noting investigations were still ongoing.

“I can tell you that there were other people at the station,” he said. “Whether or not they were there at the time when this happened, we’re still looking into all those details.”

Bucknell, a liberal arts school with about 3,600 undergraduates, is located in Lewisburg, about 50 miles north of Harrisburg. The student body is 79 percent white, 5 percent Hispanic, 4 percent Asian and 3 percent African-American.

The Lewisburg Prison Project said an inmate at the federal penitentiary in Lewisburg wrote a letter about the comments.

“He didn’t feel this is right and thought something should be done about it,” said David Sprout, a paralegal for the group. Sprout said he did not know what the inmate was serving time for.

Nigerian prostitutes declare 3-day sex to celebrate Buhari

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 22 Second

In keeping with the earlier promise made by members of the National Association of Nigerian Prostitutes (NANP), to declare a three-day free sex in the country should the candidate of the All Progressive Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, wins the presidential elections, the body has announced the commencement of the bonanza which is to begin on Easter Friday, April 3rd, and will expire at midnight on Sunday, April 5th, 2015.

In a press release sent out by the General Secretary of NANP, Jessica Elvis, the body said it has enjoined all its members spread across the country to make sure they comply with the directives from the headquarters or they will be sanctioned.

Elvis noted that the free-sex declaration is their own way of thanking their clients for voting for Buhari and also their way of congratulating the President-elect, describing his victory as a victory for all Nigerians.

Members of the association had, in January, thrown its weight behind the candidacy of Gen. Buhari in the race for the presidential elections, promising to declare a 3-day free sex spree across the country if the former Military Head of State and presidential candidate of the All Progressive Congress, APC, beats incumbent President Goodlcuk Jonathan.

The 'ashewos' had noted that the Jonathan administration was not been favourable for them and their trade, citing instances when Federal Government agents destroyed their abode, chased and arrested many of them and have made life unbearable for them in many Nigerian cities especially the Federal capital territory, Abuja.

They also urged Buhari to legalize prostitution so that they can practice their trade without intimidation.
