Do you think Patience Jonathan is jeopardizing her husband’s re-election chances?

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

Many Nigerians are of the opinion that the way First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan is going in her campaigns for her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan could end up losing out in the March 28, 2015, presidential elections.

Those who toe this line of thought believe that her inciting statements at various PDP Women Rally across the country, instead of garnering the support base she so craves for, will ultimately alienate the electorates, some of whom are fed up with the actions and words of the First Lady.

A case readily pointed at is the statement she made in Calabar, Cross River State, where she told the women at the rally that they should stone anyone who shouts 'change' at them.

Change is the slogan of the main opposition party, All Progressive Congress.

In Sokoto State, the First Lady was quoted as saying that the PDP will rule the country for the next 60 years while at another rally, she was reported to have compared the PDP to God with the powers to save Nigeria.

In Asaba, the Delta State capital, she allegedly compared the APC to bus conductors who ask passengers for 'change'.

With all these and other brazen manner of talking, political analyst fear for the re-election bid of the President.

On Morning Teaser today, we ask: do you think the words and actions of the First Lady could jeopardize the President's chances in the election?

Patience Jonathan was right to call Buhari brain-dead, PDP spokesperson says

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 39 Second

The spokesperson for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) campaign organization, Femi Fani-Kayode has said that the First Lady, Patience Jonathan was right to call the Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari brain-dead.

Mrs Jonathan mocked Buhari on Wednesday, March 4, during a PDP rally in Lokoja, Kogi state calling him an old man whose brain had died completely.

“The First Lady, Dame Patience Jonathan, was absolutely right. To say that General Buhari is “brain dead” is an understatement and to suggest that he is suffering from dementia is nothing new,” Fani-Kayode said in Abuja on March 5.

“The First Lady has spoken in a courageous and forthright manner and, most important of all, she has spoken the bitter truth. Instead of crying like spoilt little brats and complaining, the APC and the Buhari Campaign Organisation should live with that bitter truth and leave her alone,” he added.

“She has every right to express herself in any way that she deems fit and she is entitled to her opinion. This is especially so given the fact that her husband, President Goodluck Jonathan, is in the presidential race,” Fani-Kayode said.

The PDP spokesperson also accused Buhari of being condescending to women.

“This is a man that said that he would scrap the office of the First Lady if he is elected President. If he is not ready to face public scrutiny and criticism for his often times irresponsible, retrogressive, nonsensical and asinine views, he should quit the presidential race and consider retiring from politics,” Fani Kayode said

“Our counsel to the APC is as follows: leave the First Lady alone or prepare yourselves for a relentless verbal blitzkrieg, the likes of which you have never seen before,” he added.

Members of the PDP, including Fani-Kayode and Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti State have repeatedly accused Buhari of nursing a secret medical condition.

Chad President Announces Location Of Boko Haram Leader, Demands His Surrender

Read Time:1 Minute, 7 Second

President Jonathan and Chadian President Idris Deby Itno

President Idriss Deby of Chad told the media during a press conference that the Chad military and government has narrowed down the location of Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau.

"He was in Dikwa two days ago. He managed to get away but we know where he is. It's in his interests to surrender," President Deby said during the international press conference.

President Deby added that "‎Abubakar Shekau must surrender. We know where he is. If he doesn't give himself up he will suffer the same fate as his compatriots.”

The Chadian military has been part of a transnational military campaign against the Boko Haram insurgency originating from northeast Nigeria, and has been the target of Boko Haram’s violence in the past.

This news comes as the one year anniversary of the mass abduction of 250 girls from Chibok, Nigeria nears. Boko Haram has been responsible for the death of thousands of people, mostly from Nigeria’s northeastern states of Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe. The threat from Boko Haram was used by Nigeria’s Security Services to postpone Nigeria’s presidential elections.

Neither the Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan or any other government official have commented on President Deby’s statements.

Albino killers sentenced to death

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

Four albino killers in Tanzania have been sentenced to death after being found guilty of murder. This is according to BBC.

The four had killed the 22-year-old woman in 2008 because they believed her body parts had special powers, according to the case' judge.

The victim, Zawadi Mangidu, left behind a 9-month-old child, while her husband is one of those convicted.

Earlier this week, Tanzanian president, Jakaya Kikwete had vowed to tackle the killing of albinos, who are targeted for superstitious reasons.

It is not yet certain if the four will get the death sentence as Tanzania has had a moratorium on executions since 1994.

There is a high prevalence of albino murders in Tanzania as some are of the belief that their body parts can bring good luck and wealth, to this end the country is struggling to curb the wave of violence against people with albinism.

The Red Cross reports that witch doctors are prepared to pay $75,000 (about N14 million) for a complete set of albino body parts.

In January, the government banned witch doctors as part of its efforts to prevent further attacks and kidnappings targeting albinos.

No fewer than 75 people living with albinism in Tanzania have been killed in targeted attacks since 2000.

The condition is particularly prevalent in Tanzania with one in 1,400 people affected, according to a 2006 BMC Public Health report. This compares with one in 20,000 in Western countries.

Finger smart ATMs coming your way

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second

NExt time you go to the Hyosung brand of  ATM to withdraw cash or do other transactions, the machine would know you. This gives you more confidence and added security to your funds in the bank. The champion of this technology development in Nigeria is a foremost ICT infrastructure and solutions provider, Inlaks Computers.

The company in apparent   support of the CBN’s financial inclusion program is introducing Hyosung Finger Print Biometric Automatic Teller Machines, ATMs, into the Nigerian market.

Director for Sales and Strategy for e-business, Mr. Tope Dare, said “The new security technology on Hyosung ATMs would be available to existing cardholders, who may wish to adopt biometric authentication as part of their transaction approval process on their bank’s Biometric enabled ATMs.”

It will be in addition to PIN selection while new cardholders, especially those who can neither read nor write, would be issued cards with finger-print authentication functionality only. For him “This would also promote financial inclusion strategy, a central bank initiative to address the banking needs of the unbanked population.”

It is expected that the ongoing Biometric Verification Number (BVN) project by the Banks and NIBSS which was meant to address the safety of customers’ funds and eliminate loss of funds through compromise of account Personal Identification Number (PIN], would be seamlessly integrated into Hyosung’s fingerprint ATMs already being deployed to some commercial banks in Nigeria.

Managing Director/CEO, Africa Operations of Inlaks, Mr. Femi Adeoti, explained that the fingerprint biometric ATMs do not only provide convenience and security to the diverse customer segments in Nigeria but also align with the financial inclusion strategy of the Central Bank of Nigeria to address the unbanked population using ATM as a channel.

He said ‘’This is a great feat for Inlaks especially at this period when fraud prevention and building customer confidence on the use of electronic channels are key to customer acquisition and the retention strategies of the financial institutions.”  Inlaks was also the first ATM vendor in Nigeria to deliver Windows7 ATMs from Hyosung to the market early last year in compliance with the CBN and Microsoft global directive on exit of Windows XP on ATMs.

Why we can’t pay N11bn pension, gratuities arrears —BAUCHI

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 29 Second

Bauchi—Bauchi State government has attributed its inability to offset the N11 billion backlog of pension and gratuities to dwindling financial resources.

The State Head of Service, Adon Dalla Gin, who made this known at a briefing at Government House in Bauchi, said the administration of Governor Isa Yuguda inherited a debt of N600 million pension, which it had off set and paid accordingly to pensioners.

He said the state government paid the sum of N239,010, 937.88 monthly to 7,192 pensioners, adding that the number of retirees kept increasing rapidly as a result of massive retirements in the civil service on the basis of 35 years of service, 60 years of age or deaths.

He said: “The state civil service has an average of about 50 retirements on a monthly basis. This therefore accounts for the monthly increase of gratuity monthly which has now reached 11billion naira for both state and local government.

“When this government came into inception, the Governor approved the sum of 300 million naira to upset the outstanding pension and gratituities, but could not because of the dwindling financial resources of the economy”

“The government later reviewed it to N100 million but discovered that it could not afford it and brought it down to N25 million.

‘’The government also had problem of the payment of the N25 million and had to stop the entire process for some time. However, recently the sum of N25 million was paid to reduce the debt.’’

The Head of Service assured that the government would offset the remaining debt as soon as it got funds, adding that government was a continuous process.

He disclosed that the state had introduced a modified contribution Pension Scheme.
