EXPOSED! Buhari’s Absence Causes Ruckus In London, ‘Hes In UK To Rest’-Says Wife

Drama has intensified as emerging reports indicate there is an internal crisis brewing in the ranks of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following the shocking absence of the party’s presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd.) at a scheduled meet on Saturday with hundreds of his supporters in London.
It was gathered that the forum was hurriedly being organized by a number of Nigerian citizens in the United Kingdom who are keen on seeing the retired general clinch the presidency in the 2015 general polls, to interact with him about his plans for Nigeria.

However, those who thronged the venue, Park Plaza Hotel in Westminster were disappointed as Buhari who is supposed to be in the UK on a working visit was not present. Instead, he was represented by his wife, Hajiya Aishatu Buhari who was accompanied by Dolapo Osibanjo, the spouse of the party’s vice presidential candidate and a few other party stalwarts held for Nigerians in the diaspora on Saturday night at the Westminster Plaza Hotel, in Waterloo.

In contrary to Mr. Fayose claims, Buhari’s wife debunked rumours that Buhari is gravely sick and undergoing medical treatment in London.

“He’s home, well and sound,” Hajia Buhari said, as she fielded media questions after emerging from the oversubscribed interactive session. When asked if her husband was in hospital, she smiled warmly and turning to the reporter, said, “I’m hearing it for the first time.” Gen. Buhari, meanwhile, was said to have attended Friday prayers at a Mosque near Baker Street.

“He attended prayers on Friday, he was seen around the mosque near Baker street,” the source revealed, before Hajia Buhari’s disclosure . When pressed further on if her husband was in London for a medical check-up, Hajia Buhari smiled and said: “No, he’s just come here to rest. He’s just here to have a rest. At least a few days rest before he goes back to business.”

But the event was marred by the number of angry Nigerians in London who had thronged the venue to hear what the duo of Mrs Buhari and Mrs Osibajo had to say. Reacting to claims by some people that Buhari’s photograph with Blair, Saraki and Amosun was fake, Alhaji Garba asked: “Are they saying everyone is a liar, including Awujale who received GMB at home in London and the TV station that aired his studio interview?”

Meanwhile, Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Peter Ayodele Fayose argued that the photograph was a trick and a lie, in order to maneuver the curiosity of Nigerians and hide their secrets, they dished mountain of lies to Nigerians by producing fallacious photos.
Thisday Newspaper took it upon themselves and made phone Interview with Buhari to see if he can say the truth;
Question: THISDAY: They said you were hospitalised in a London hospital?
Answer: Buhari: “I am in London with Senator Bukola Saraki, Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State for a short working visit.
“I just finished talks with the former Prime Minister of the UK in his country home.
“I would be having another meeting with the Awujale of Ijebuland soon. Apart from this, I am also visiting some friends. As you can hear from my voice, I am hale and hearty with some of my friends around me.”
Note, Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair is on Peace Mission across the world in the last 4 days.
Tony Blair was not in London this weekend even up till now and could not have met with General Buhari has his team want us to believe.
Blair was in Belgrade, Serbia on a visit to their PM, Aleksandar Vucic. He later visited Rwanda till Saturday. The former British PM left Rwanda to Israel en route to Gaza, Palestine.
One wonders why Buhari who claims to be the oracle of integrity, will lie to the world that he visited Tony Blair’s country Home and APC announced that they visited Tony Blair’s office. sadly,Tony Blair’s office was closed on Saturday. We are demanding more explanation from the self claimed anti-corruption crusader, Buhari.
Furthermore, it was exposed that Buhari was not billed to speak at the Chatam House in London and the General has not made any public appearance since Friday, when he was whisked out of Nigeria by his campaign team. The state of Buhari’s health remains a source of concern to Nigerians as the country has experienced electing a gravely ill man into the office of president in 2007.
The sentimental comments goes on and on…

In the limelight, Buhari is expected to deliver a speech at the Chatham House on Thursday this week. “He’s speaking at Chatham House on Thursday, they will soon put it up on their website,” a member of the UK chapter of the APC disclosed during Saturday’s event.

When will Buhari show up himself to clarify the minds of Nigerians from their hullabaloo?? Some say Thursday but as for you,

What is your take on this?

Fleeing Boko Haram Calls For Ceasefire

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 14 Second

Members of the Islamist terror group, Boko Haram that are running away from the fire-power of Nigerian troops are calling for ceasefire and immediate stop to hostilities.

The group that has lost almost all their camps in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa are reportedly distributing flyers in Potiskum and Yobe areas in Adamawa state asking for ceasefire as they are fleeing for safety. But observers are skeptical of the calls for ceasefire since even as Nigerian military regains key towns lost to Boko Haram last week, the insurgent group stoops to even bloodier tactics

The $1Billion request from President Jonathan was delayed by the House of Representative for nearly 5 Months and Nigerians lost over 148 soldiers using war equipment used during the Biafran war.

In the last three weeks, the war planes, attack Helicopters, armoured vehicles with Night vision, Body armour for the Boys ordered have arrived and the Boko Haram and their supporters are not finding it funny.

Nearly 400 Members of Boko haram got drowned last week while trying to escape through the Lake Chad river.

NDOKWA YOUTHS CALLS FOR MORE SUPPORT FOR NIGERIAN MILLITARY

The Ndokwa Neku Union (NNU) Youth Wing over the weekend in a meeting with Ndokwa community youth leaders advocates for more support and cooperation, majorly from boko haram affected communities in the North East as our gallant soldiers descends heavily on the blood sucking demons called boko haram.

The apex Ndokwa Youth body in a statement by its spokesman, Pedro Obi, noted that with 100% cooperation of major stakeholders cutting across political, traditional and religious line in the North East, Boko Haram will soon be history.

While commending the Multi – National Joint Task Force on the success recorded thus far in the fight against insurgents, the body equally called on all Nigerian people, most especially our Northern brothers to support the Federal Government in this fight against a united Nigeria.

Boko Haram Sends Out Child Suicide Bombers

Chadian soldiers on top of a truck, left, speak to Cameroon soldiers, right, standing next to the truck, on the border between Cameroon and Nigeria as they form part of the force to combat regional Islamic extremists force's including Boko Haram, near the town of Gambarou, Nigeria, Feb. 19, 2015.

As the fight against the militant Islamist insurgent group, Boko Haram, progresses in fits and starts. Victory one day is eclipsed by defeat the next. On Saturday Feb. 21, Nigeria’s military spokesman tweeted that the army had retaken the border town of Baga after a fierce battle with the group’s fighters.

But even as soldiers continued with the “mopping up” operation, residents elsewhere in the area reported scores of deaths at the hands of Boko Haram militants. And a day later, on Feb. 22, a suicide bomber killed five and wounded dozens in the northeast town of Potiskum, about 210 miles away. Though Boko Haram has yet to claim responsibility for the attack, the devastation was caused by what is rapidly becoming the group’s signature calling card: a female bomber, who, according to witnesses speaking to Reuters, looked to be no more than eight years old.

Though Boko Haram reportedly has enough firepower to successfully raid several Nigerian military garrisons, its ability to wreak terror is just as important in an asymmetric war like this one. United States intelligence officials estimate that Boko Haram has only 4000-6000 “hardcore” fighters, but a succession of attacks across Nigeria’s northeast and across the borders of its neighboring countries has nonetheless demonstrated the group’s seeming ability to be everywhere at once. The Nigerian military has a hard time keeping up, leaving many civilians caught in the middle. Few support Boko Haram, which has left a trail of massacres and abductions as it seeks to impose on the region its interpretation of Islamic law, but even fewer dare stand up to the group without a military to protect them.

Help is on the way: the African Union has pledged 8,750 soldiers, police and humanitarian officials to the fight. Already Nigeria’s neighbors Chad, Niger, and Cameroon, have entered the fray, defeating the insurgents in border areas and denying Boko Haram the sanctuary it once enjoyed. But Nigeria’s military is faced with an uncompromising deadline. National Security Advisor Sambo Dasuki has pledged that Boko Haram will be defeated before the March 28 presidential election, which was postponed from February for security reasons. That gives the army six weeks to do what it hasn’t been able to achieve in the six years since the insurgency launched.

Regaining Baga is a start. Strategically speaking, the fishing town offers little military advantage. Symbolically, it packs a punch. Boko Haram took Baga on January 3, in a surprise raid that sent soldiers tasked with protecting a nearby military garrison fleeing for their lives. Over the course of the next few days Boko Haram methodically rampaged through neighboring villages, killing and burning everything in its path. At the time, local officials estimated that up to 2000 residents had been killed; a government assessment put the number at 150. With access to the area limited and phone coverage all but cut off, it was impossible to establish which number was closer to the truth. Satellite imagery released by Amnesty International a few days later showed widespread devastation that gave credence to the higher count, though it is also possible that many residents fled before Boko Haram arrived.

Still, the discrepancy was largely interpreted as a government effort to downplay the insurgency’s strength, and the military’s failure. Now that Baga has been re-taken, investigators will be able to get closer to the truth of what actually happened. That may be of little comfort to those who lost loved ones and property in the massacre, but in the battle of messaging, it’s a start.

Read Time:20 Second

The presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari can crack a joke when the moment is right. This one may be on Ayodele Fayose, governor of Ekiti State, remotely ‘stalking’ him on his visit to London, even when what he gets is a completely false picture.

The video was shot on Monday 23 February, 2015 at Cavendish Road, London

Buhari in UK to rest, says wife

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 26 Second

“He’s just come here to rest. He’s just here to have a rest, at least a few days rest before he goes back to business.” Those were the words of Hajia Aishat, the wife of Major General Muhammadu Buhari, in which she denied insinuations that her husband is in the United Kingdom to attend to a grave illness.

There was widespread controversy at the weekend that the UK trip of Gen. Buhari, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), was on health grounds although his campaign organization said it was for political business.

The health of 72-year-old Gen. Buhari has been an issue in the country’s presidential campaign, with a group expressing fears that he may be unable to perform optimally if he emerges president. Buhari has, however, consistently pooh-poohed the claim that he is physically unfit.

A photograph of Buhari, said to have been taken with former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, as well as Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun and Senator Bukola Saraki, purportedly to confirm the claim that he was in the UK for political business, stirred further controversy.

While the Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Peter Ayodele Fayose, argued that the photograph was a trick and a lie, others doubted its authenticity on the ground that Amosun was on a campaign train in Sagamu, Ogun State, on the day he was said to have taken the picture with the team. Blair was also said to have been somewhere else in Europe, not the UK, that day.

In an interview with the Daily Times, the spokesman of the Buhari campaign organization, Alhaji Garba Shehu, asked the doubters to also fault the fact that the presidential candidate was received by a prominent Ogun State monarch, and granted a television interview.

However, Fayose insisted at the weekend that information about the APC presidential candidate is being hidden from Nigerians. The Ekiti Governor specifically challenged Buhari to swear by the Holy Quran that he (Buhari) did not visit a UK hospital on arrival in London last week.

Buhari’s wife debunked rumours that Buhari is gravely sick and undergoing medical treatment in London. Mrs Buhari allayed the fears of Nigerians and APC supporters after emerging from a two-hour interactive drinks reception she and the wife of her husband’s running-mate, Mrs Osinbajo, held for Nigerians in the diaspora on Saturday night at the Westminster Plaza Hotel, in Waterloo.

Buhari is expected to deliver a speech at the Chatham House on Thursday this week. “He’s speaking at Chatham House on Thursday, they will soon put it up on their website,” a member of the UK chapter of the APC disclosed to the Daily Times during Saturday’s event.

The source also revealed that the Party’s Chairman, Chief John Odigie Oyegun, is due in London on Monday (today), and that Buhari’s running-mate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, will be guest speaker at another event holding at the House of Commons next week Thursday, March 5. On her part, the wife of the Ogun State Governor, Mrs Olufunso Amosun, during Saturday’s event, warned Nigerians against setting their expectations too high if the APC wins the March 28 presidential elections.

Accusing the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of “leaving a legacy of unemployment,” she said to the attendees: “General Buhari is not a magician, “ adding: “He will not find you a job if you do not go out there and help yourself.”

Mrs Amosun told “armchair critics” that to build Nigeria goes beyond sitting at a remote location and criticising on the social media. “We need to improve our literacy levels in order to tackle mortality rates and boost education, among others,” she said, adding: “It is beyond writing on social media,” to do this.

But the event was marred by the number of angry Nigerians who had thronged the venue to hear what the duo of Mrs Buhari and Mrs Osibajo had to say. Reacting to claims by some people that Buhari’s photograph with Blair, Saraki and Amosun was fake, Alhaji Garba asked: “Are they saying everyone is a liar, including Awujale who received GMB at home in London and the TV station that aired his studio interview?”

But the Ekiti State Governor, who issued a statement last week saying that Buhari was admitted at a hospital located at Cavendish Street, Cavendish Square, W2 London West End, London, challenged the APC presidential candidate to swear by the Holy Quran if he (Buhari) did not visit a UK hospital last week. Fayose said that the hope of Buhari’s party to seize power in Nigeria, using Buhari will be dashed at the end. He said: “Buhari will never be Nigeria’s president again.”

Speaking through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said: “I wish they can see spiritually what I am talking about that Buhari, despite the hullabaloo, will never be president. I predicted my return as Ekiti State Governor and I am saying it again that Buhari will never rule Nigeria again.

“After President Goodluck Jonathan, there will be a young element in his late 50s from the North that will be Nigeria’s president. I want to liken this revelation to the story of Elijah and Elisha. I am the Elijah while my followers are Elisha.”

While maintaining that he was not wishing Buhari dead, Fayose said: “I owe it a duty to Nigeria and its people to expose the antics of the APC cabal whose only interest is to seize power to further their selfish interests.

“Without doubt, it is obvious that these cabal in the APC are trying so hard to deceive Nigerians on Buhari’s health status. That’s the reason they have been using photoshopped pictures to defend their lies on Buhari’s UK trip.

“First, they used a March 5, 2013 picture, claiming that Buhari was taking a walk in London on Thursday. Later they came up with another poorly cropped picture of Buhari with former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair.

“The same people who lied in September 2012 that they received a gold card invitation to attend the Democratic National Convention in the United States of America are behind the robing of Buhari in the garment of lies and I challenge Buhari to swear by the Holy Quran that he did not visit hospital in the United Kingdom last week.

“However, I want to disappoint this selfish cabal. Buhari is only raising their hope and that hope will be dashed.”

We’ll arrest Shekau before elections, President says

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 43 Second

President Goodluck Jonathan has said that the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau will be arrested before the upcoming general elections.

Jonathan also admitted that he underestimated the threat posed by Boko Haram.

The President stated this during an interview with ThisDay on Friday, February 20, in Lagos.

Excerpts below:

MR PRESIDENT, Elections have been postponed following the security advice of the military who have said they need to secure the North-east. But the question people are asking is: ‘what had not been achieved in six years, how is it going to be achieved in six weeks in the fight against Boko Haram’ ?

In the Council of State meeting when the issue was raised, after the INEC chairman spoke, they asked the Chief of Defence staff to speak. He did not actually specify that the elections should be postponed because of the fight against Boko Haram. He said for the 14th February election, we could not guarantee the security; he did not tell us that it was only because they wanted to rout Boko Haram in the North-east.

So nobody is saying that we must win the war against Boko Haram hundred per cent. We cannot expect to win the war against such terror hundred per cent before the elections anyway but we will not allow them keep all the territories they hold. My belief is that by 28th of next month, when the elections will be conducted Boko Haram may not even be in a position to attack any town, God willing.

Shekau, in a video, just threatened to disrupt the elections. What is your government doing about this?

God willing we will catch Shekau before the elections.

A lot of people see your misreading and poor handling of the Boko Haram insurgency and your soft stance on corruption as having played a role in driving Buhari’s growth in stature and giving you, an incumbent President, a serious run for your money. Do you accept that as President there are certain things you did not manage properly?

I think the thing that has brought this government down with both Nigerians and non-Nigerians, is the issue of Boko Haram. Probably at the beginning, we and I mean myself and the team, we underrated the capacity of the Boko Haram. Capacity not in terms of what they have in Nigeria, but their international linkages, we underrated that and thought that we were dealing with some local elements that we could overrun.

Are you happy that Obasanjo has left PDP?

I don’t like to comment on Chief Obasanjo, he’s my father. I am here because God wanted me to be here, but God used people to do the work.

First and foremost, Nigerians voted for me; at least I got the majority vote and that’s why I am here. So many people played different roles. Obasanjo also played some roles in my life from my days as a deputy governor to get to where I am. today So I wouldn’t want to make comments about Obasanjo. I believe overtime, over the years, Obasanjo himself will begin to speak differently on some of these issues that are at the moment being controversial.

EXCLUSIVE: US Investigator exposes APC, proves Buhari’s ‘London’ Interview was previously recorded in Transcorp Hilton, Abuja (Analysis with Photo Evidence)

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 15 Second

When it comes to Buhari’s health, seems things are much worse than previously thought After it was revealed on Friday that Buhari had snuck into the UK (enroute to the US) for medical reasons, APC panicked.

We were told about two ‘secret’ events he allegedly attended, but he was missing from the one public event he was scheduled to attend, and was instead represented by his wife and youngest daughter.

With notable APC stalwarts and propaganda channels leading the charge, we were deceived into thinking Buhari met with Tony Blair yesterday, he hadn’t. We had naively given them the benefit of doubt:

We were also fed the line that Buhari had granted an interview to a Local TV Show, ‘All Eyes on Africa’

Problem is, just like we were lied to about the Blair meeting, we were lied to about the TV Show as well. Here’s why:

He was allegedly interviewed by , Kemi Fadojutimi, for ‘All Eyes on Africa TV Show.’ Firstly, Kemi & her show are based in Maryland USA, not London, UK.

Secondly, Kemi is involved with APC politics, even going as far as presenting ‘awards’ to APC stalwarts like Rauf Aregbesola, so not a secret where her sympathies lie. She’s biased, a political operative, not a neutral journalist.

Thirdly, the interview took place at the Transcorp Hilton, Abuja during Kemi’s Nigeria visit. Here is a picture of the ‘King Ambassador Suite’ taken from the Hilton websiteand a picture of the room where Buhari was interviewed:

A casual observation indicates that contrary to APC’s claims that Buhari was interviewed in London, he was actually interviewed in a ‘King Ambassador Suite’ at the Transcop Hilton, Abuja. One merely needs to look at:

The ridges of the coffee table:

The Design of the Couch:

The Side Tables by the Couch

The Two Picture Frames positioned over the Couch

The design of the carpet:

and for the Coup de grâce, the bottle of Aquafina.

Here are both pics with these similarities pointed out.

Of course Buhari acolytes will claim the interview was conducted in London, sometime in the  last 48 hours, forgetting that though many Nigerians were born at night, none who shall be voting were born last night. Just as well, since at this point, most Nigerians know APC as a party and those who defend it specialize in blatant lies.

Buhari will never rule Nigeria again – Fayose

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 0 Second

The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has claimed that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari “will never rule Nigeria again”.

Mr. Fayose spoke on Sunday in a statement through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media.
Mr. Fayose also challenged the former Head of State to swear by the Holy Quran that he did not visit any hospital in the United Kingdom last week.

Mr. Buhari is currently in London on a working visit, according to the Directorate of Media and Publicity of his campaign.

Mr. Fayose said he predicted his victory in the 2014 Ekiti governorship election and therefore boasted he could also “see spiritually” the future of the country, including not only President Goodluck Jonathan’s victory on March 28 but also his successor in 2019.

He said, “I wish they can see spiritually what I am talking about that Buhari, despite the hullabaloo will never be president. I predicted my return as Ekiti State governor and I am saying it again that Buhari will never rule Nigeria again.

“After President Goodluck Jonathan, there will be a young element in his late 50s from the North that will be Nigerian president. I want to liken this revelation to the story of Elijah and Elisha. I am the Elijah while my followers are Elisha.”

He said he never wished Mr. Buhari dead, but added he was duty bound to expose the “antics of APC cabal” over the APC candidate’s health status.

APC leaders, including former Governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki, have released pictures of Mr. Buhari’s engagements in the UK, including a meeting with former Primie Minister Tony Blair, whose specific purpose was however not stated.

However, according to Mr. Fayose, those pictures were “photoshop pictures” meant to “deceive Nigerians.”

“I owe it a duty to Nigeria and its people to expose the antics of the APC cabal whose only interest is to seize power to further selfish interests,” Mr. Fayose said. “Without doubt, it is obvious that members of this cabal in the APC is trying so hard to deceive Nigerians on Buhari’s health status. That is the reason they have been using photoshop pictures to defend their lies on Buhari’s UK trip.

“First, they used a March 5, 2013 picture, claiming that Buhari was taking a walk in London on Thursday. Later they came up with another poorly cropped picture of Buhari with former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair.

“The same people who lied in September 2012 that they received a gold card invitation to attend the Democratic National Convention in the United States of America are behind the dressing of Buhari in the garment of lies and I challenge Buhari to swear by the Holy Quran that he did not visit hospital in the United Kingdom last week.”

However, in a swift reaction, an Ekiti based APC group, the Action Group, has berated Mr. Fayose for his “actions and words.”

“The indecorous governor is bent on seeing the APC presidential candidate dead before the March 28 presidential election because his party is sure of losing the election, and he feels he will stew for it,” the group said in a statement by its spokesperson, Segun Dipe.

It further accused the Ekiti Governor of spying on Mr. Buhari in London and “may soon start toying with the idea of snipers, that is, if he has not already.”

I met Buhari Saturday — Tony Blair; APC candidate to speak Thursday — Chatham House

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 44 Second

A former British Prime Minister, Tony Blair, has confirmed that he held a private meeting with the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari, in London on Saturday.

There has been speculations in Nigeria that a picture showing Messrs. Blair, Buhari and Governor Amosun as well as a former Kwara state governor, Bukola Saraki, was photoshopped.

Mr. Buhari’s campaign office had stated that the former head of state was in the U.K. on a working visit.

However, Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state and supporters of the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, are claiming that Mr. Buhari is in the UK for medical treatment.

To buttress their claim, some of the critics claimed Mr. Blair was not in the U.K. on Saturday and could therefore not have met Mr. Buhari.

PREMIUM TIMES Monday contacted the office of Mr. Blair for confirmation and we got a response that the meeting actually held.

“Mr. Blair had a private meeting with General Muhammadu Buhari in London,” said Rianne Buter in an email response to PREMIUM TIMES’ inquiry.

Ms. Buter also said Mr. Blair “hopes to visit Nigeria shortly when he will see the President”.

Mr. Buhari’s campaign office also issued a statement saying the APC candidate “would hopefully give a talk at the prestigious foreign policy hub, the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Chatham House, in London.”

Chatham House has now confirmed that Mr. Buhari will speak Thursday on the topic: “Prospects for Democratic Consolidation in Africa: Nigeria’s Transition”.

Details of the event as posted on the website of Chatham House also revealed that Mr. Buhari would speak for one hour between 10 and 11a.m. and the event would be chaired by Richard Gozney, the British High Commissioner to Nigeria between 2004 and 2007.

Chatham House encourages interested persons to send questions to Mr. Buhari via Twitter.

“Send questions for the speaker by using #CHAfrica on Twitter. A selection will be put to him during the event,” it said

Jonathan replies Soludo over “missing N30 trillion” claim

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 21 Second

President Goodluck Jonathan seized the opportunity of an interview with a Nigerian newspaper last week to hit back at a former Central Bank governor, Charles Soludo, who accused his government of failing to account for at least N30 trillion, and allowing corruption to flourish.

Mr. Jonathan dismissed Mr. Soludo’s claim as politically-motivated, and ridiculed his academic standing, saying it was illogical for that sum to be “stolen” as his government had not generated that much in all its years in power.

In an elaborate article on the state of the Nigerian economy mid-January, Mr. Soludo had tackled Nigeria’s finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, over her management style and inability to steer the nation aright amid an oil crisis.

Mr. Soludo, a first-class economist and professor, said whatever fiscal reserve Nigeria would have fallen back on during the crisis, had been badly depleted by corruption and poor management by the Okonjo-Iweala-led economic team of the Jonathan administration.

“Our public finance is haemorrhaging to the point that estimated over N30tn is missing, or stolen, or unaccounted for, or simply mismanaged,” the former CBN governor said.

Mr. Soludo said the sharp decline of the naira against the dollar was an indication of trouble for the nation.

He said his article was written for Nigerians to be informed ahead of the 2015 elections.

“Part of my frustration is that five years after, everything I warned about has come to happen and we are conducting our campaigns as if we are not in a crisis. As a concerned Nigerian, I have a duty to speak out again,” he said.

At the time, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala dismissed Mr. Soludo’s concerns as those coming from a sore political loser who wished the country ill. In a vicious tit-for-tat article, the finance minister labelled Mr. Soludo Nigeria’s worst CBN governor ever.

In his interview with Thisday newspaper last week, President Jonathan repeated some of those claims, and questioned Mr. Soludo’s scholarship.

The president made the remarks as he sought to explain widespread impression of his government as being terribly corrupt, saying such allegations are often fed by spurious claims made by notable figures like Mr. Soludo.

“So you’ll see that there is a lot of politicking about some of the serious issues. Not too long ago I read in one of the papers, I think Vanguard, that former chief economic adviser to President Obasanjo who also went to become a CBN governor… Soludo is a professor and first class material. Yes, making a first class in economics, he is a brilliant person. His secondary school records are fantastic. So by all standards he is a brilliant person. So the Vanguard wrote that he accused Ngozi; that N30 trillion was stolen under the watch of Ngozi in four years,” the president said.

“Ngozi became a finance minister, let’s say from 2011 till date. From that time till now, our annual budget is between N4.3 trillion and N4.9 trillion. So even if you put all together, it is about 18 plus trillion naira, and not 30 trillion. The budget for these four years is less than N20 trillion, but Soludo said that under Ngozi’s watch they stole N30 trillion. This is in the papers, social media, stored in the clouds and will continue to be there. And when you type it in it will come out that during President Jonathan’s time they stole N30 trillion.”

But while the president hinged his explanation on realized budget figures for Nigeria annually, Mr. Soludo, in his article, based his N30 trillion claim on funds available to the government, amounts not reconciled and what the country should have earned earn if there had been quality economic policies.

“Under you as the Minister of Finance and coordinator of the economy, the basket of our national treasury is leaking profusely from all sides. Just a few illustrations,” he wrote to the finance minister in January.

“First, you admit that ‘oil theft’ has reduced oil output from the average 2.3 – 2.4 million barrels per day to 1.95 mpd (meaning that at least 350,000 to 450,000 barrels per day are being ‘stolen’). On the average of 400,000 per day and the oil prices over the past four years, it comes to about $60bn ‘stolen’ in just four years.

“In today’s exchange rate, that is about N12.6tn. This is at a time of cessation of crisis in the Niger Delta and the amnesty programme. Can you tell Nigerians how much the amnesty programme costs, and also the annual cost for ‘protecting’ the pipelines and security of oil wells? And the ‘thieves’ are spirits?

“Second, my earlier article stated that the minimum forex reserves should have been at least $90bn by now and you did not challenge it. Rather, it is about $30bn, meaning that gross mismanagement has denied the country some $60bn or another N12.6tn. Now, add the ‘missing’ $20bn from the NNPC. You promised a forensic audit report ‘soon’, and more than a year later, the report itself is still ‘missing’. This is over N4tn, and we don’t know how much more has ‘missed’ since Sanusi cried out.

“How many trillions of naira were paid for oil subsidy (unappropriated?)? How many trillions (in actual fact) have been ‘lost’ through customs duty waivers over the last four years? As coordinator of the economy, can you tell Nigerians why the price of Automotive Gas Oil, popularly called diesel, has still not come down despite the crash in global crude oil prices, and how much is being appropriated by friends in the process?

“Be honest: Do you really know (as coordinator and minister of finance) how many trillions of naira self- financing government agencies earn and spend? I have a long list but let me wait for now. I do not want to talk about other ‘black pots’ that impinge on national security.”

Mr. Soludo added, “My estimate, Madam, is that probably more than N30tn has either been stolen, or lost, or unaccounted for, or simply mismanaged under your watchful eyes in the past four years. Since you claimed to be in charge, Nigerians are right to ask you to account. Think about what this amount could mean for the 112 million poor Nigerians, or for our schools, hospitals, roads, etc.

“Soon, you will start asking the citizens to pay this or that tax, while some faceless ‘thieves’ are pocketing over $40m per day from oil alone.”

In his interview with ThisDay, the president said after reading the former CBN governor’s claims, they (cabinet members) simply asked Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala about the impression of her former colleagues at the World Bank, about Mr. Soludo’s charges. He said they were convinced it was political.

“We asked Ngozi how her colleagues in the World Bank saw the accusation and she said they were laughing and couldn’t believe it. There are certain things that you just cannot believe and if that is coming from somebody considered to be cerebral like Professor Soludo, then of course you know what the ordinary person would say. It is all political,” the president said.

We’ll catch Shekau before elections — Jonathan

President Goodluck Jonathan has said that he believes the leader of the insurgent group, Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau, responsible for thousands of deaths, will be apprehended by government forces before Nigeria’s elections starting March 28.

Mr. Jonathan disclosed this in an interview with Thisday newspaper on Friday.

”God willing we will catch Shekau before the elections,” Mr. Jonathan said in response to a question on what his government is doing about Mr. Shekau’s threat to disrupt the elections.

Mr. Shekau, whose group has killed over 15,000 Nigerians, has remained elusive since the sect launched its series of deadly attacks in 2009.

In September 2014, claims by the Nigerian military that Mr. Shekau had been killed during a shoot-out turned out to be a hoax.

Efforts by the Nigerian government to improve the capacity of the army through arms procurement have been repeatedly frustrated by foreign authorities as claims of human rights abuses loom over the military.

But government forces have made significant gains in the war against Boko Haram in the last two weeks, reclaiming some areas seized by the militants.

Mr. Jonathan admitted that the strength of Nigeria’s military was not commensurate with its position as Africa’s largest economy, adding that his government is determined to look inwards for arms procurement.

“Concerning the military strength being not at par to that of Nigeria’s economic development, there are some countries that don’t have powerful military,” Mr. Jonathan said.

“I don’t think Switzerland has a very powerful military. There are some countries that were even doing away with their military until this issue of terror, and now some of them are reconsidering.

“What happened in Nigeria is that after the civil war we had no reasons to buy sophisticated weapons. Since after the civil war, all what we have been doing is peace keeping, apart from stabilising Liberia and Sierra Leone, where our soldiers really fought war to stabilise those countries.

“Back home, we were at peace with our neighbours. It is now that we are witnessing Boko Haram that we see that fighting them is not what we do with AK 47, and now we have to look for money. I totally agree with you, if Brazil can manufacture commercial helicopter, what stops us from going into manufacturing.”

The president further said that if re-elected, his administration would focus on local technologies for arms production.

“Recently, we wanted to buy tear-gas from a country and they were bragging and saying that Nigeria has human rights abuse issues. I kept wondering what is tear-gas? I vowed that God willing if I return, Nigeria must produce tear-gas,” he said.

“What is the technology of producing tear-gas for God’s sake? What is the technology of producing APCs and armoured tanks? I agree with you that in terms of manufacturing, we must and we have no choice than to get into it as a nation. That is why we are emphasising about local content in production; that you can witness in the automobile industry which has come back.”

Mr. Jonathan also said that more companies would be issued licenses to produce arms, to complement the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria, DICON.

“Just last week a company that bought over the machine tools in Osogbo came to show the bullet proof vest that they produced and I asked them, can’t you produce weapons and they claimed that they can manufacture weapons if they could be patronised and there is a guarantor,” said the president.

“Yes we have our own DICON, but DICON alone cannot produce all our weaponry. We must have more than two, three companies in a big country like Nigeria.

“I told the company that immediately after the elections, if I’ll be here for the next four years, before they start going for weapons, all the tear-gas that we’ll use in Nigeria, will have to be produced in Nigeria.”
