Deputy Chairman, Finance Committee of the Presidential Campaign Organization, Dr. Ngozi Olejeme on Wednesday reflected on the years in office of President Goodluck Jonathan and said that Nigeria under him witnessed unprecedented levels of development.

Olejeme told reporters in Asaba that Nigerians want continuity, stability and the basic dividends of democracy.

“Nigerians have prospered under his leadership. They see his re-election as a signal of good things to come for this great country. He will come out victorious in the presidential election” she said.

Identifying agriculture, education, healthcare delivery, construction of new and rehabilitation of existing roads across the federation, appointment of public officers and the formulation of a sound economic policy as areas where the president performed, Olejeme said the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate enhanced the well-being of Nigerians.

“There is much for which we should all be grateful. For the years of the Jonathan administration, majority of Nigerians are counting their blessings” she said.

Stilling recalling the modest achievements recorded so far by the current administration, the PDP chieftain said Jonathan’s presence in Aso Rock earned Nigeria enormous international goodwill and support.

She charged Nigerians, particularly Deltans, to support the candidature of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan for a rapid development of the country.

“President Jonathan will ensure the security of persons, property and investments. He will protect the unity and territorial integrity of Nigeria. He will strengthen rule of law, ensure impartial treatment of citizens, food security, judicious distribution of resources and transparency in government. He will create jobs, care for the weak. He will respect constitutional provisions, adhere to the doctrine of separation of powers, lead a government that is consultative, responsive, prudent, transparent, accountable, dedicated to service, law abiding and above all democratic” she said.

“Our job is to deliver the party 100 per cent” she added

Osinbajo Blasts Jonathan For Going To Islamic Meeting

Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

All Progressives Congress (APC) vice presidential candidate, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has blasted President Goodluck Jonathan for going to the Organisation of Islamic Countries (OIC) meeting.President Jonathan had attended the OIC meeting, making him the first president to do so since Nigeria was surreptitiously enlisted by President Ibrahim Babangida in 1986.Osinbajo revealed this today during a meet and greet session in Warri, Delta state.

He claimed that those who have said that Buhari is a Muslim fundamentalist and campaigner for the Islamisation of Nigeria were doing nothing but distorting history.“Throughout his period as military head of state, Buhari was under intense pressure to drag Nigeria into the OIC, but he never yielded, because he respects Nigeria as a secular state, in line with the constitution.

Besides, his cook and driver are Christians.“When Babangida eventually dragged Nigeria into OIC, none of his successors ever attended any of its meeting because they know to Islamise Nigeria is very difficult, as you need to first get the constitution amended.

That process, you know, is almost impossible.“But it is on record that in 2013, President Jonathan, undermining the constitutional limitation, ensured that Nigeria attended an OIC meeting,” he declared.Osinbajo is campaigning with Gen Muhammadu Buhari to win the national elections on the APC ticket. If they succeed, it will be the first time any opposition party has defeated the PDP in Nigeria since the return to democracy in 1999.

Read Time:39 Second

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has reacted to claims by Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers state that Nigerian pastors were given a N6bn bribe to campaign against Muhammadu Buhari, Presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

According to PUNCH, PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh said, ''It is a crime to the Church and Christianity. It is an insult on Christianity. To say that pastors are paid to support the President is height of recklessness. Such allegation is despicable and should be condemned. There was nothing like that from us as a party and there was nothing like that from our candidate''.
Also, Rivers state Assistant Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Samuel Nwanosike, challenged Amaechi, to name the pastors that collected the N6bn.

Rapists on rampage: Shocking stories of how minors have become endangered in Plateau

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 57 Second

AS you approach her, she averts eye contact, preferring to look at the ground; call her name, she nods her head without saying a word. She is equally not forthcoming when you try to engage her in a conversation. Yet this is a girl who was said to be outgoing and playful before her most recent traumatic experience.

But after much prodding by Vanguard Features, VF, 13-year-old Sadia (not real name) and a primary five pupil of a private school in Jos, the Plateau State capital, was able to tell her story, albeit amidst tears.

Residents in shock

A middle aged man was caught defiling her at about 7am on the fateful day of October 12, 2014. It was an ugly incident that has since turned her life upside down and left residents in the neighbourhood reeling in shock.

She said it was not the first time the man raped her, adding that she had before this time allowed him to have his way because he gave her money to meet her urgent need, which is food. So their being caught in the act, booed and sniggered at by a curious crowd of residents, was a “shame too much” for her bear.

Narrating her ordeal, she said: “Papa Emeka always sent me to buy things for him and he would leave the change with me. One day, he asked me if I had started seeing my menses and I asked him what that means, but he said I should forget it. Another day, he called and told me to enter his room and clean it. As I entered, he came in, pushed me on the bed and held my mouth. I was scared but he was pleading with me not to shout that he wants me to start seeing my menses.

“As he was trying to rape me, I bit him and he left me alone. Because he locked the door, I could not go out, so he started begging me not to tell anyone and he gave me N500. I did not tell anyone because I was confused and I was scared of telling my stepmother because she would beat me.

“After many weeks, he asked me to buy a bottle of soft drink for him. When I went in to give him the drink, he poured it inside a cup for me. After drinking it, I started feeling tired and had to lie on the floor. I did not know what happened thereafter, but when I woke up, he said I should go before my stepmother would start looking for me. I was feeling pains and did not know anything but I could not tell anyone.”

Sadia added: “About five days later, he called me, put me on his leg and started touching my body. He asked me if I told anyone that I slept in his house, and I said no. Though I was scared, I could not tell anyone because immediately he finished, he gave me N500 and said I should go home and have my bath. Since I did not eat, I used the money and bought food at the roadside.”

However, luck ran out on the randy man on the third day (October 12, 2014) when he called the girl at about 6.30am not knowing that the stepmother was yet to leave the house and suspicious neighbours took note when the girl entered his apartment.

While the stepmother was looking for the girl, a neighbour knocked at the randy man’s door, opened it and caught him in the act. She drew the attention of others but before the culprit could be apprehended, he escaped through the back door and the poor girl had to face the shame of neighbours openly reprimanding her.

Ever since the incident, she keeps to herself, plays with no one and endures the trauma of daily scolding from her stepmother. She confessed she felt like dying as she knows people are yet to forget the incident and are talking behind her back.

Long list of girls raped, traumatised

But unknown to Sadia, she is one in a long list of young girls who have been raped in recent time. On September 13, 2014, in Mangu Local Government Area, another minor, eight years old Nankling (not real name), a primary two pupil, was defiled by a teenager at Mangu Halle. On the same day, a 10- year-old girl in Mararaba Pushit was raped by a married man who has two children. At Jakatai, a nine- year-old was raped on September 22, 2014 by a 38-year-old father of four.

Telling the story to VF, the mother of the eight-year-old victim, Mama Nankling, said she is yet to overcome the trauma of having her daughter being defiled in that manner. She added she never imagined the neighbour could be so wicked to do such to her baby.

According to her: “He always came around here to play with my children. One day, he took this girl to one uncompleted building in our area and started sleeping with her. I did not see my daughter around so I thought she was playing in the neighbourhood, but she came home, limping and crying. When I asked what happened, she told me what Aminu did to her. When we got to his house and he confirmed he did it, we got him arrested. He is there with the Police and they had charged him to court. No matter the result of the judgement, I will still be sad that this happened to me and I feel guilty that I did not do enough to keep my child from harm’s way.”

At Kwata, Zawan in Jos South Local Government Area, a 17-year-old girl was on July 7, 2014 raped by a neighbour who also threatened to kill her if she told anyone. There was also another case at Barkin Ladi where a security personnel attached to the Special Task Force, STF, raped a four-year-old girl in the neighbourhood. Though the randy Mobile policeman had been dismissed by the Police authorities and charged to court, the parents of the girl still lament the situation.

Relationship with victims

Within three weeks in November 2014, three different incidences occurred at Corner Shagari area of Jos North. First, a teenage girl was raped by six men and then at Tudun Wada in the same local government, a three-year old was raped by a middle aged man. At Bukuru in Jos South, a five year old girl was raped by a man in his 30s.

The case is not different in other areas like Kanam and Qua’an Pan where VF investigations reveal that rape of minor is on the increase across the religious divides in the local government areas. It was also established that most of the assailants had some form of relationship with the victims and this, most times, hinders the cases from being reported.

To be continued

Facing the crocodile that ‘ate my wife’

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 47 Second

Four months ago, Demeteriya Nabire was killed by a crocodile when she went to the lake near her home to fetch water. The animal later came back to the area but found Nabire's husband waiting, ready to take revenge.

Demeteriya Nabire was at the water's edge with a group of women from her village – they were gathering water from Uganda's Lake Kyoga when the crocodile grabbed her. It dragged her away and she was never seen again.

Her husband, Mubarak Batambuze, was devastated – Nabire was pregnant when she died, and he had lost not only his wife but an unborn child as well. He felt powerless. But then last month he heard the crocodile had returned.

"Somebody called me and said, 'Mubarak, I have news for you – the crocodile that took your wife is here – we are looking at it now.'"

The 50-year-old fisherman made his way to the lake with some friends. "He was a very big monster, and we tried fighting him with stones and sticks. But there was nothing we could do," he says.

So Batambuze went to visit the local blacksmith.

"I explained to him that I was fighting a beast that had snatched and killed my wife and unborn baby. I really wanted my revenge, and asked the blacksmith to make me a spear that could kill the crocodile dead.

Mubarak Batambuze with the spear he ordered from the blacksmith

"The Blacksmith asked me for £3.20 ($5) and made the spear for me," he says. It was a significant amount of money for Batambuze, but he was determined to kill the animal that had snatched his future.

"The crocodile ate my wife entirely. Nothing was ever seen of her again – no clothes, no part of her body that I could identify. I just didn't know what to do – a mother and her unborn child. It was the end of my world. I was completely lost."

Armed with his new spear – specially designed with a barb on one side – the widower went on the attack.

When he got to the water the crocodile was still there, but Batambuze's friends took fright.

"Please don't attack this beast," they pleaded, "it's so huge it may eat you. The spear is not enough – it won't finish the job."

But Batambuze insisted they stay. "I failed killing it the first time around," he told them, "I'm not bothered if I die killing this beast. I'm going to take it on with this spear, and I will make sure that it dies."

A Ugandan Wildlife Authority ranger, Oswald Tumanya, says the crocodile was more than four metres long and weighed about 600kg.

"I had so much fear in me but what helped me to succeed was the spear," says Batambuze.

He tied a rope to the end of the weapon so that once the tip was embedded in the crocodile, he could pull it out at an angle and the barb would cut into more of the animal's flesh.

"I put the spear into the crocodile's side, and while my friends were helping to throw stones at the beast's back, it tried getting its mouth up to attack me again.

"It turned violent, and then there was so much fear in the place. But I was so determined, and I wasn't afraid of dying. I just wanted it dead, so I put the spear in its side and I pulled the rope. That got the crocodile into trouble."

Start Quote

I'm a very depressed man because I lost a wife and an unborn child”

End Quote Mubarak Batambuze

It took an hour and a half for Batambuze and his friends, fighting and retreating, exchanging attacks with the enraged animal, before the crocodile was finally dead.

Exhausted, they made their way back to their village. "There was so much shock. What really surprised everybody was how big the beast was. It wasn't an ordinary crocodile. It was so big. And people called me and my friends heroes," he says.

The dead animal was taken to Makarere University in Kampala, where it was examined by a vet, Wilfred Emneku.

He says a tibia bone was found inside the crocodile's stomach, but while he believes it's human he can't be sure.

A crocodile expert at Charles Darwin University in Australia, Adam Britton, says he would be very surprised if any remains inside the animal's stomach were those of Demeteriya Nabire.

"After 12 weeks… under normal conditions, it would be highly improbable for bones from the same meal to remain in the stomach," he says.

So while Batambuze's celebrity status endures in his village, it is unlikely that he will ever have a grave to mourn at.

"Within myself I'm a very depressed man because I lost a wife and an unborn child," he explains.

"But the locals keep on saying, 'Thank you for killing the beast, that's where we fetch water and we're sure it would have taken somebody else. Thank you so much, you did a great job.'"

"So I'm a local hero – people keep on thanking me."

Mubarak Batambuze spoke to Outlook on the BBC World Service. Listen again on iPlayer or get the Outlook podcast.

2015: Rivers APC Condemns Wike’s Fresh Plot to Clone and Demonise Dakuku Peterside

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 4 Second

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Ricers State Chapter, has unequivocally condemned an alleged plot by the gubernatorial candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State, Chief Nyesome Wike, to criminally clone Rivers APC governorship candidate, Dr. Dakuku Adol Peterside, with a view to demonising him.Rivers APC in a statement issued Wednesday in Port Harcourt by the Chairman, Dr. Davies Ibiamu Ikanya, quoted one of those commissioned to carry out the evil plot but who decided to back out as his conscience would not allow him to harm an innocent man like Dr. Peterside, as revealing: “We have been commissioned to do a documentary using the picture of Dakuku Peterside and a different body, to be presented in awkward positions and involved in violent as well as fetish activities.

“We have been given pictures of some bad roads in Port Harcourt to portray Peterside as having failed as a Commissioner of Works in Rivers State and not worthy to govern the State. Some documents have been forged, alleged to have emanated from the Ministry of Works, National Assembly and some other departments, to present Peterside as a corrupt person. We have gone very far on the project but have the challenge of getting somebody who has the same shape and body like Peterside and the technology available to us to produce a very convincing documentary is posing a serious challenge to accomplish this project; so Chief Wike has directed that after we get all the parts together in our studio at Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, he will fly us out to put all the missing parts together. However, I am a Christian and my faith does not support such an evil act against an innocent man; that is why I am backing out not minding that my life is on the line.”

Dr. Ikanya recalled that Wike once boasted that at the appropriate time, he would ‘expose’ the APC gubernatorial candidate, Dr. Peterside. “This is obviously one of the ways he intends to go about it, having come face-to-face with his overwhelming rejection by all the segments of Rivers State, including even his own party, PDP. Besides, Wike is coming to terms with the fact that promotion of violence in the State will not make him the Governor but that awful defeat awaits him at the polls in the hands of Dr. Dakuku Peterside on 28th February, 2015,” Ikanya said.

Continuing, the Rivers APC Chairman said: “We once alerted the public of the plot by Chief Wike to clone our agenda for the future of Rivers State titled ‘Road Map To Prosperity’ and, true to our fears, he went ahead to clone the document and shamelessly present it to the public. We are, however, not ready to tolerate this new phase of criminality which involves the cloning of our gubernatorial candidate. In this regard, we have instructed our lawyers to be on standby to sue Chief Wike and any media outfit that allows itself to be used to air such a defamatory documentary.

“It is sad that instead of Chief Wike running an issues-based campaign, he prefers to mount a campaign of acrimony and calumny. According to him, ‘So far I have been rejected by Rivers State people and my party has traded off my mandate by making Rivers State people to vote for Jonathan and vote Dakuku, I will make sure that Dakuku is disgraced out of the race’.

“As much as we sympathise with Wike over his plight, we urge him to tread cautiously as we all shall continue to live together as brothers and sisters after the elections. We know that Chief Wike has no programme for the future of Rivers State apart from promoting violence and attempting to buy the governorship with ill-gotten money but we wish to counsel him to accept defeat in good faith and allow peace to prevail in our State as we have nothing to gain in destroying and maiming the people we are striving to govern.

“We urge the good people of Rivers State to join us to condemn this desperate, wicked and abhorrent plot to destroy the hard-earned reputation of Dr. Peterside, who is well known as a god-fearing man who has refused to soil his hands in any way.

“Finally, we urge our teeming supporters and the entire Rivers State people to continue to support APC, Dr. Peterside and our other candidates as we have never disappointed the State and will never disappoint it, either now or in the future.”

Long Live APC!

Long Live Rivers State!!

Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze,

SSA on Media and Public Affairs to the State Chairman, APC Rivers State.

Photos: Meet the woman who’s addicted to drinking air freshner

Read Time:57 Second

27 year old Missouri woman named Evelyn was recently featured on TLC's "My Strange Addiction", where she revealed that she's addicted to drinking air-freshner.

According to Evelyn, she drinks 20 cans of air freshner a week and sprays up to 50 times daily."I love air freshener. In the last three years, there is not a day where I’ve not had it. Fresh linen is my favorite flavor. Apple crisp is like dirt.” Evelyn said it started one day when she walked past an automatic air freshner spray, and it “dusted” her cup of glass.

She gave it a try, and became hooked. Her man says he hates it but because he loves her, he's understanding.

Awww, how sweet! "I’m pretty sure it’s unhealthy, and if you look at it, it says flammable. It’s nasty, it’s disgusting, but she loves it, and I love her, therefore I just have to deal with it.”

Letter To Bishop Oyedepo: Thou Shall Serve No Other God, By Adeolu Ademoyo

0 0
Read Time:8 Minute, 22 Second

Dear Bishop Oyedepo,

Based on the foundations of our faith in the Acts of the Apostles whereby as Christians we are urged by the living God to proclaim the Gospel with joy, great enthusiasm and minister to the poorest among us, I bring the word of God to you with respect to your decision to be part of the 2015 elections and what they hold for the poor and most vulnerable among us –the friends of our Lord Jesus, our Emmanuel-God among us.

Ordinarily, it ought to be presumed that as a Bishop of your Church that you are aware of this divine message, which rests on the divine unity of the Body Of Christ. But your recent decision which divided members of the Body of Christ in your Church-Winners Chapel, Ota, western Nigeria- when you  openly asked them to pray for President Jonathan’s success at the polls, and, which led to the open resistance of your curious prayer point has justified this reminder.

The Incorruptible Body of Christ rests unmistakably on Joy To The World for that Joy To The World is at the core of His Word among us, which is at great risk given your embrace of the source of major corruption in the land-President Jonathan, who is the source of the misery, poverty, joblessness, un-employment of the poor and vulnerable who our Lord Jesus calls us to minister to and proclaim the joy of the Gospel to.

This message concerns the visit of President Jonathan to your church-Winners Chapel- at the thick of the 2015 campaign during your church’s third service on January 25. President Jonathan was in company of Mr. Jones Arogbofa his Chief of Staff and Mr. John Kenny Okpara Executive Secretary of Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Board.

Given the way our kind God is working for Change in Nigeria we have it on record that President Jonathan has been sending emissaries to some Pastors to pray for him meaning to pray against change. The information yet to be confirmed is that money is changing hands and the emissary in this transaction where money is being used in hot pursuit of Pastors and the Body of Christ is allegedly Mr. Okpara Secretary of Nigerian Christian Pilgrim Board.

Dear Pastor David Oyedepo, here is where you come in because you are one of these Pastors praying against Change in Nigeria. And this calls to question our call to serve the poor and most vulnerable among us by our God.

First, as a Bishop, you are expected to say the truth. As a Bishop, you are in the eye of the Nigerian Christian Community. Yes it is true that as Nigerians there are some of us Christians who can reconcile our Christian faith with corruption. There are some of us who in open disregard to the scriptures, which proclaim “They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption.
For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. ” Peter 2:19 would force a false reconciliation of the Incorruptible Body of Christ, the scriptures with the insane corruption under the watch of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Regardless of this, you have the faith obligation to say the truth before Nigerian Christian Community whether you visited President Goodluck Jonathan, and whether you asked members of the Body of Christ in your church to pray for President Jonathan who has never been a friend of the Nigerian poor and the vulnerable. So Bishop, I have a simple question for you: did you visit President Jonathan, and did you ask your church members to pray for President Jonathan’s success at the polls?

If you did, did you visit with other brother Pastors? If so, who are these brother Pastors? What are their names? Who organized the visit? Nigerians know that your brother Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria who is also supposed to be the president of Christian Association of Nigeria has sold CAN to President Jonathan as part of his campaign structure. Hence, we want to know if Pastor Ayo Oristejafor was part of this visit too.

Now these are what are in the pubic domain. Because the vast body of the laity across all Christian denominations of our faith who are closer to the street conditions of the poor in Nigeria have decided to defend the Incorruptible Body of Christ by distancing themselves from the corruption under President Jonathan, the president has panicked.

The president panicked because unmindful of the history of our nation, he has in a most divisive manner  initially sold himself as “the Christian” candidate. That did not gain any traction among Nigerians and the Christian laity   because President Jonathan’s regime seethes in corruption, and President Jonathan’s social and moral corruption stands in fundamental contradiction to the Incorruptible Body of Christ.

Hence, Nigerian Christian laity have decided to distance themselves from him in defense of the Incorruptible Body of Christ. This is because if someone is a Christian and he/she is going into politics, and he/she wants to put herself forward as a Christian, then such person must go into the roots of Christianity which is a service to the poor, the socially and economically broken, the lonely and the most vulnerable and socially disabled in our society.

This, the Christian-in-politics must do in defense of the Incorruptible Body of Christ. That is, we know a Christian candidate if there is one, and not the mere parroting that “I am a southerner then I am a Christian candidate” like President Jonathan is mistakenly doing in direct offense and antagonism to our individual Christian and moral consciences.

Sir, Bishop Oyedepo, a Christian candidate is not who is dubiously and on private, personal friendship basis anointed by the CAN president-Ayo Oritsejafor, a business man though a Pastor, whose role is transient and who like all of us mortals must account for his service and sins against the poor, before our God.

Rather, the Christian candidate is that who represents the “poor” roots of Christianity as a service to the broken and who then ministers to the spiritual needs of the poor as the poor is lifted out of poverty as we proclaim the Gospel with joy.

Thus a good Christian must run on an anti-corruption platform for the Body of our Christ is Incorruptible. Sir our faith is fundamentally irreconcilable to corruption. Because our anointment is an anointment to serve the poor ceaselessly without season, our anointment knows this.

Dear Bishop, I am not the one talking. It is a voice from the scriptures, which I commit to you thus “They promise them freedom, but they themselves are slaves of corruption. For whatever overcomes a person, to that he is enslaved. ” 2 Peter 2:19

But on the contrary, Pastor Oyedepo, sadly, you stated your position on the nature of our anointment. Against, 2 Peter 2: 19, Pastor David Oyedepo, you brought in President Jonathan-a corrupt symbol of the negation of the Incorruptible Body of Christ and therefore of our anointment.

Pastor Oyedepo, you chose to abandon the divine roots of Christianity which is service to the poor, the vulnerable, the broken, the lonely and the socially ignored in favor of the artificially “mighty” and possessor of the transient and finite in our lives.

Pastor Oyedepo, against the voice of the lonely, the broken, the ignored, the economically and socially invisible due to poverty, you chose to align with the transiently “powerful” the finite, the mortal, due to the transient “power” of Oil money.

Pastor Oyedepo I put it to you, due to your worship at the altar of the transient, gold, silver and oil, you divided members of your church. It will take the restorative nature of the mercy of God to restore unity. This is why we must see the end and exit of corruption in our society and lives.

For our God gave us a commandment brought down by Moses form the divine Mount, which says “Thou Shall Have No Other god beside me”. Pastor, do you still remember this? When you bow before oil money as you do, you have created other gods.

When you divide members of your church through intimidation as you do, you have created other gods. When you secretly worship at the Mount of Corruption as you do, you have created other gods.

When you look at the poor straight in the face and you say, “I do not care… I care only about my oil and the money it festoons me with” you have created other gods.

But Pastor at this holy hour, just before the decision remember the voice of the poor from the Nigerian streets. At this hour, there are no Christians, there are no Muslims; there is no young there is no old, there is no literate and there is no illiterate, there is no south, there is no north, there is no west, there is no east; you only have the poor and the transiently “mighty” it is one body, one soul, one divine voice reminding you of the “poor” roots of our faith of Christianity in the Acts of the Apostles and commandment handed over to us from generation to generation saying and beckoning “Thou Shall Have no other god before me… Thou shall serve no other god beside me…” This is the word of our Lord.

Dear Bishop David Oyedepo I leave you to your Christian conscience and the loving and kind hand of our God of Change who is ceaselessly patient and kind and who will welcome us and you anytime we change and return to HIM.

Yours in Christ.
