There is heightened tension in Enugu following a bomb explosion at the national headquarters of the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, in the state.A source told LEADERSHIP that the sad development, which occurred at No. 7 Park Avenue, G.R.A Enugu, destroyed parts of the building and some infrastructure.

It was further gathered that the explosion caused a fire outbreak but it was swiftly put out, and that the devastation affected parts of the main hall of the Ohanaeze secretariat where major meetings of the body are held.Although no life was lost, close sources reported that the impact of the explosion shook the entire vicinity.

Many people have attributed the explosion to the recent leadership crisis which has pitched the Enwo Igariwey-led leadership against the Elders Council of Ohanaeze led by elder statesman, Mbazuluike Amaechi.

The group’s executive body is claiming a four-year tenure but the elders’ council has insisted that the exco’s two-year tenure expired on January 7 this year and has thus constituted a caretaker committee led by Chief Ralph Obioha.Chief Obioha, who inspected the Ohanaeze main hall after the blast yesterday, described it as unfortunate. But the public relations officer, Enugu State Police Command, Ebere Amaraizu, said that it was a bomb attack, but an attempt by unknown persons to burn down the Ohanaeze building. He said police detectives were already searching for the perpetrators.

My successors must be younger than me —Jonathan

Read Time:1 Minute, 5 Second

LAFIA—PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan yesterday set an age barrier for a possible successor if he wins re-election, saying that anyone above 57 years would not receive his support in 2019.

Speaking at a campaign rally in Lafias, Nasarawa State the president also disowned the governorship aspiration of his former minister of information, Mr. Labaran Maku, affirming he never supported his move from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The President also promised to give special attention to Nasarawa State on account of what he said is the proximity of the state to Abuja.

Giving his determination to support power transfer to the younger generation, the president said: “We want to encourage young people because the future belongs to them. We will not take leadership from you because you are the leaders of tomorrow. The director-general of my campaign organisation, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, has mentioned that my successor is going to be a younger person and that is what we will do.

‘’If you look at how we are going you will find out that what he said is true. Obasanjo was 70 when he was elected, the late President Yar’Adua was in his early 60s, I am about 60. So the PDP is grading down from Obsanjo to me.

Explain source of your terrorist tapes, PDP tells APC

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

ABUJA-NATIONAL leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has asked the opposition party, the All Progressives Congress, APC and its leadership to as a matter of urgency explain the source of tapes of terrorist attacks on innocent Nigerians in their possession, which they intend to air designed to achieve what it termed, their selfish purpose.

In a statement yesterday night by PDP National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, the PDP said, “Indeed, upon the release of the tapes, the APC must explain to Nigerians how it got hold of them. We ask, is the APC working in collaboration with terrorist cells, who have been unleashing violence against innocent citizens of our dear nation?

“Are these the same terrorist groups that earlier nominated the APC Presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari to represent them in the dialogue between them and the Federal Government?

“Nigerians should be worried over the connections the APC might have with insurgent groups especially coming on the heels of recent support expressed to their presidential candidate by the Movement For The Emancipation Of The Niger Delta (MEND).

“We wish to clarify that this is not an attack on the APC as a party but rather a serious issue that boarders on national security.

“We therefore call on all Nigerians and lovers of democracy to note this as the APC embarks on a campaign to attempt to gain directly from the security challenges facing our nation.”

Why we cheat on our spouses – Abuja residents

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 36 Second

Abuja – Some married people in Abuja on Wednesday identified the need for material possession as the major reason for infidelity among married couples.

Respondents in separate interviews also mentioned the desire to satisfy emotional needs as another contributory factor.

Mr Johnson Eze, a civil servant, said he was cheating on his wife not because he loved her less but for the sole purpose of “catching some fun’’.

He said: “My marriage is one of the best because my wife, who is God-given, is an understanding woman and she tolerates me a lot.

“Yet, I still find myself cheating on her just for the fun of it. This does not in any way diminish the love I have for her and my lovely kids.

“I recall an incident that happened some time ago. I told my wife that I was travelling to Calabar for an official assignment, but ended up with my girlfriend in a hotel, and she found out.

“The incident almost destroyed my home but thanks to God my wife was able to forgive and forget put the ugly incident behind, ‘’ he said.

Eze, who described infidelity as `a careless act,’ advised men to desist from it.

A female boutique operator, who pleaded anonymity, said the desire to keep up with the latest fashion trend made her to cheat on her husband.

According to her, the husband, a low income earner, was financially incapable of meeting her insatiable material needs.

“Besides, my hubby and I fight over things that are not relevant and I lie to him most times to raise extra cash to buy something, which he considers unnecessary.

“I have not been faithful in my marriage because of the temptation to stay on top of the fashion trend which is way beyond the financial capacity of my husband.

“Besides the extra cash my boyfriend gives me, whenever I want to collect money from my husband for food stuff and other basic necessities I always double the cost.

“This has become a habit for me and whenever I don’t get my share in any shopping I do on behalf of the family, I get angry and pick on my husband at any little provocation, ‘’ she added.

A legal practitioner who offered a coined name – Mr Kosi Chiemela – blamed his adulterous actions on lack of intimacy, emotional disconnection and lack of friendship with his wife.

Chiemela who described marriage as “one difficult school you cannot graduate from till you die,’’ stated that the only way to escape was to stay single.

“I am a temperamental person and when I newly got married, it was not easy for my wife whose temper is also short.

“Both of us hardly agree on anything and the only escape route for me is to seek love and affection elsewhere.

“My girlfriend understands me and she tolerates a lot, unlike my wife who blows up like a bomb at the slightest provocation,’’ he said

Buhari, INEC, APC DRAGGED TO COURT OVER FORGED CERTIFICATE.

Read Time:1 Minute, 27 Second

In a clear move to stop the presidential flag bearer of the All Progressive Congress, APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari from contesting the election, a legal practitioner, Mr. Chukwunweike Okafor, on Monday, approached the Federal High Court in Abuja with an application seeking the court to disqualify the candidate over issues bothering on his credentials.

The case tagged FHC/ABJ/CS/01/2015 has Buhari, APC and the Independent National Electoral Commission as the first, second and third defendants respectively.

The suit was filed pursuant to Section 131 of the Constitution, which prescribes a minimum qualification for nomination to participate in the presidential election and Section 31 of the Electoral Act that requires all presidential candidates to depose to an affidavit that they have satisfied and complied with the constitutional requirements to be President of Nigeria.

The complainant, in the suit filed through his counsel, Chief Ugo Ugunnadi, is contending that Buhari’s form CF001 with the INEC, wherein he stated that he obtained the minimum educational qualification of West African Senior School Certificate could not be valid as the said certificate was allegedly forged or not genuine.

The plaintiff, among other things, is asking the court to declare that “the information contained in Buhari’s affidavit dated November 24, 2014, stating that the Secretary of the Military Board was in custody of his WASSC was false and thereby disqualified him from contesting the 2015 general elections.”

The lawyer is therefore seeking an order of the court “compelling INEC to withdraw, remove and/or delete the names of the 1st and 2nd defendants from the list of persons or political parties eligible to contest for the Office of the President of Nigeria in the 2015 general elections.

Dancing can generate employment for Nigerian youths — Artiste

0 0
Read Time:56 Second

Mr Tony Offiong, the Chief Executive Officer, JIIMBAY Dance Company, Lagos, has said that dancing could generate employment for the nation’s youths if well structured.

Offiong told newsmen in Lagos that government and corporate organisations could sponsor dance competitions among youths as being done in other countries.

He said that if dancing was taken seriously in Nigeria, the youths would be able to earn their living from it.

“If we allow dance to take its pride of place in the country and make it a source of income, like other countries do, companies and individuals will use our dancers and dump them,’’ he said.

The director said that most people erroneously viewed dance as an easy profession.

He said dancing had its own clout and language, adding that it was profession on its own.

“Dancing needs vigorous energy and the youths need where to channel their energy to keep them busy

“If all tiers of government and associations come together to help make dancing work, it will serve as a means of employment for the youths,” he said.

NCC to sanction network providers over unsolicited messages

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 39 Second

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) said it would not hesitate to penalise network providers that failed to keep its regulation on unsolicited messages to subscribers.

Tony Ojobo, the Director, Public Affairs, NCC, made the statement on Wednesday in Abuja in an interview with newsmen.

He said the commission would not support network providers to send unsolicited messages to subscribers on the ground that it infringed on the privacy.

He said that the commission was working tirelessly to ensure that such services are being curbed.

“The issue of unsolicited messages has posed a challenge which the commission has been contending with till today.

“An unsolicited text message gives a subscriber no choice to receive or not, so the commission had to intervene within the limits of its enabling laws and regulation.

“We have had series of meeting with the stakeholders and telecom operators on this issue; we cannot deny the fact that we had received series of complaints from subscribers; we are quite aware of it.

“We are in the process of Vast Technical Frame Work to keep track of those sending this unsolicited messages and to see that they are properly sanctioned,’’ Ojobo said.

He said that the commission would sanction network providers appropriately once they were able to identify the source of such unsolicited messages.

He added that some of the sources were untraceable for now because they were being sent through the internet.

“To protect the interest of the subscribers, the NCC in the past, has been able to protect and stop unsolicited messages whose sources we were able to identify.

“Those issues I believe will be resolved very soon with the series of meetings we are having with the telecom providers.

He said that the commission would not fail to also penilise any erring Value Added Service provider (VAS) that failed to comply with the commission’s guideline on unsolicited Short Messaging Services (SMS)to sub-scribers

Incest: Court fixes March 5 for trial of 50-year-old father Mr. Yesiru Onajobi

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 45 Second

A Federal High Court in Lagos, on Wednesday, warned it would commence trial in a case against 50-year-old Yesiru Onajobi, standing trial for alleged incest.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke adjourned the case to March 5, following the absence of a counsel for Onajobi.

The accused, resident at Bogije St., Ibeju, in Lekki Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of alleged carnal knowledge of his 14-year-old daughter.

He is being prosecuted by The National Agency for the Prohibition of Traffic in Persons (NAPTIP).

Reports indicated that when the case resumed for hearing on Wednesday, the prosecutor, Mrs Nora Eshiet, told the court that there was still no legal representation for the accused.

The judge then asked the accused if he understood the nature of the offence against him. The accused replied that he understood the offence but that he could not afford the legal fees.

Justice Aneke then adjourned the case to March 5, and warned the accused that the court would proceed with the trial on the next date should he fail to get legal representation.

“This case is further adjourned to March 5, for continuation of trial; it is a criminal case and should be granted accelerated hearing.

“Trial will proceed if the accused fails to provide a legal representation at the next date,” he said

Reports showed that the trial has suffered adjournments due to absence of a defence counsel. Recall that the matter was heard before Justice Barbara Molokwo but later transferred to Aneke on July 8, 2013 following Molokwu’s death.

Although the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, Aneke ordered his remand at the Ikoyi Prisons pending his bail application.

The prosecutor said the accused allegedly committed the offence in 2010. Eshiet had told the court that after the death of Onaboji’s wife, the accused started to sexually assault his only daughter in his custody and got her pregnant.

Eshiet said the offence contravened the provisions of section 13 (1) and 18 (a) of the Trafficking in person (Prohibition) Law Enforcement Act, 2003.

Poll: 82 youth groups endorse Jonathan

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 23 Second

A coalition of 82 youth groups in Sokoto State on Monday endorsed the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan during the Feb. 14 elections.

Reports have it that the youths endorsed Jonathan and his deputy, Namadi Sambo, at a PDP town hall meeting.

Newsmen also reported that the forum, which also flagged off the non-violence campaign, was organised by the Directorate of Youth Mobilisation of the PDP Presidential Campaign Organisation.

Speaking at the ceremony, the PDP National Youth Leader, Mr Abdullahi Maibasira, said the PDP abhors violence and other acts capable of causing disunity in the country.

” The PDP and President Goodluck Jonathan in particular believes in the sanctity of human life,” he added.

Maibasira further said that Jonathan would sustain his commendable youth-oriented programmes and policies if re-elected.

According to him, elections should be for peace and national development and not for any selfish interests.

” The youths should therefore shun all acts of violence, collect their PVCs and should come out en masse and vote Jonathan as well as other PDP candidates at all levels in February’s general elections.

” Nigerians generally should do this during the forthcoming polls to enable Jonathan to consolidate on the achievements of the Transformation Agenda,’’ he said.

The PDP Youth Leaders in Sokoto and Zamfara states, Alhaji Aliyu Gidan-Kanawa and Yusuf Alhassan respectively, urged Nigerians not to vote on religious or ethnic lines.

Alhaji Akibu Dalhatu, a chieftain of the party in the state and a former Special Adviser on Youths and Students Matters, warned youths against indulging in acts of violence which may mar the elections.
