Photos: The World’s Tallest and Shortest Men Meet

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 44 Second

The world's tallest man, Turkey's Sultan Kosen, who stands 2.51 metres (eight feet, nine inches) tall, today came face to face ” well, face to shin ” with the world's shortest man Chandra Bahadur Dangi from Nepal, who measures just 55 centimetres (21 and a half inches).

The little and large act met as people across the globe tried to break all manner of weird and wacky world records, including banging heads, catching spears and throwing thongs.

Kosen, a 31-year-old farmer, stooped down to shake hands with 74-year-old Dangi opposite the Houses of Parliament in London. He told AFP that meeting Chandra was œamazing, although he admitted bending the long, long way down for photographs was difficult.

œI was very interested how tall he was going to be, about how far up my legs he would go, and of course once I saw him I realised how tiny he was. I do have problems with my
knees so if I stand too long I do get tired. Even though he is short and I am tall, we have had similar struggles throughout our lives and when I look into Chandra's eyes I can see he is a good man.

As well as being the tallest man, Kosen's hands are the biggest in the world ” an impressive 28.5 centimetres (11.22 inches) from the wrist to the tip of his middle finger.

Meanwhile Dangi, a primordial dwarf who makes placemats and head straps for villagers carrying heavy loads, is the shortest adult ever certified by Guinness World Records. He told AFP:

œI was very pleased to see the tallest man in the world, I was curious to meet my extreme opposite. I'm so pleased to be a Guinness record holder. Thanks to this I have visited many countries and met many people. I really love it.

The two men met today to celebrate the 10th annual Guinness World Records Day.

Botswana gay group wins case- can now officially be registered

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 11 Second

A gay and lesbian group in Botswana has won a landmark legal case in the country’s High Court, allowing it to be officially registered.

The judge ruled that the government had acted unconstitutionally in blocking the group, Legabibo.

“I am happy with the judgement – it has sent a message to the government, the entire region and Africa,” the group’s Caine Youngman told the BBC.

Homosexual acts are illegal in Botswana, as in many African countries.

The Botswana Penal Code, based on old English law, describes homosexual acts as offences against morality, punishable by up to seven years in prison.

“We are overjoyed at the outcome of the case. Lesbians, gays and bisexuals have long strived to be able to form an organisation which can support them and be their voice on matters that affect them,” said Mr Youngman.

The Southern Africa Litigation Centre (SALC), which often handles human rights cases across the region, said the ruling could have bigger implications.

“The judgment emphasises the importance of the rights to freedom of expressions, association and assembly in a democracy,” said SALC’s Anneke Meerkotter in a statement.

“Importantly, the judgment emphasises that it is not a crime to be homosexual or attracted to someone of the same sex. The court finding is important not just for activists in Botswana but throughout Africa.”

A 35-year-old man Okada rider rapes 14-year-old tuberculosis patient in Lagos

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 48 Second

A 35-year-old man, Andrew Ekanem, has been arrested by the police for allegedly raping his neighbour’s daughter in the Bariga area of Lagos State.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the 14-year-old victim was still undergoing a six-month treatment for tuberculosis when she was attacked by the suspect on Monday morning.

Our correspondent was told that the victim was the first of four children.

The mother of the victim, Mrs. Adenike Aderinkomi, a trader, told our correspondent at their house on Akilo Street that her daughter went to ease herself in the early hours of the morning when she was cornered by the Cross River State indigene.

She claimed the suspect penetrated her daughter through the anus and vagina.

She said, “It was around 2am on Monday when my daughter woke up and said she wanted to go and ease herself.

“I was having my quiet time and didn’t know when I slept off. I woke up about 15 minutes later and didn’t see her in the room.

“I woke her father up and he said he didn’t know her whereabouts. We both became anxious and went outside to search for her.

“Another neighbour also joined us in the search.”

She said she was shouting her daughter’s name in the backyard, but did not get any response.

Aderinkomi said about 10 minutes later, her husband saw their daughter coming out of Ekanem’s room.

Our correspondent learnt people overwhelmed her with a barrage of questions, but the Primary six pupil insisted she went to ease herself.

Her mother said she pulled her away from the growing crowd of neighbours and pressed her to talk.

“My daughter became afraid. She then told me that while she was on her way to ease herself, Ekanem grabbed her and took her inside his room to sleep with her. She said while I was shouting her name, he covered her mouth.

“People seized him and wanted to beat him up. But I had to quickly report the matter to the police very early in the morning so people would not take the law into their hands,” she said.

Aderinkomi said she was surprised because when her daughter fell critically ill in February, last year, Ekanem assisted her family in taking her to Calabar, the Cross River State capital, for traditional treatment.

PUNCH Metro learnt that after the alleged rape, the victim was taken to the Gbagada General Hospital for testing and treatment.

A medical report, which was sighted by our correspondent, revealed that the victim sustained bruises in her private parts.

The paper, signed by one Dr. Ojekunle of the hospital, stated, “The child was caught with a neighbour around 2am today. She confessed that the neighbour called her on her way to ease herself and forced her and had sex with her.

“She sustained bruises in her anus and vagina (as a result of) sexual assault.”

Our correspondent was told that the victim had been taken to an undisclosed orthodox church for “prayers and deliverance”.

A carpenter, Tunde Hassan, who lives in the house where the incident happened, expressed surprise, saying nobody imagined Ekanem could do such a thing.

Hassan said, “Up till now, I cannot comprehend what happened. The man was a gentle man and he never fought or made trouble with anybody.

“But at the same time, people should learn to forgive when things like this happen, because you never can tell. Somebody that was bad to you today can be good to you tomorrow.”

It was learnt that the suspect was arrested by policemen from the Bariga Police Division.

A police source told our correspondent that investigation revealed the suspect was fond of the act and usually induced his victims with money.

He said, “That was not his first time of doing such a thing. This particular girl, he had slept with her about three times. He was always giving her money ranging from N200 to N500.

“But this time, he was caught red-handed and that was why the girl’s parents are insisting on taking him to court. When he was queried, he didn’t give any reason for his behaviour. He’s just fond of sleeping with little girls.”

The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Kenneth Nwosu, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspect had been taken to court.

PDP urged Abiola’s Wife, to pick up Your Presidential Nomination Form

0 0
Read Time:58 Second

The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has urged Prof. Akasoba Duke-Abiola, the wife of the late Chief MKO Abiola, to collect her presidential expression of interest and nomination forms in view of the one week extension granted by the party which expires today.

The party added that Duke-Abiola willfully refused to collect her forms after it was sent to her through her lawyers.

The PDP National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, in a statement yesterday, said Mrs. Duke-Abiola’s refusal to collect the forms suggested an ulterior motive, adding that other aspirants including Dr. Ghalil Tafawa Balewa and President Goodluck Jonathan collected their forms on October 30 and November 6 respectively.

The party expressed surprise that Duke-Abiola chose to go to court instead of taking advantage of the extension, which expires today to collect her forms.

Stating that the aspirant still has until the close of work today to collect her forms, the PDP said failure to do so would leave it with no option than to consider her as not being interested in the contest, but out to cause confusion and foment trouble in the party.
