Battle over ‘Keep Christ in Christmas’ sign heats up

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second
Pitman, N.J., a 2-square-mile town with 9,000 residents, has the slogan "Everybody loves Pitman." But lately, not everyone agrees.

An Atheist group, based out of Wisconsin, is now offering a $2,000 reward for information on the arsonist that tried to light the group's "Keep Saturn in Saturnalia" billboard on fire.

The billboard is the Freedom from Religion Foundation's protest against a "Keep Christ in Christmas" sign that hangs over Pitman's main street. Saturnalia refers to an ancient festival in December that once honored the Roman god Saturn.

The group has been protesting the sign for a few years saying it violates the separation of church and state.

"This has been a really long saga. I have been working on this since 2011," said Andrew Seidel, attorney with the Freedom From Religion Foundation. "We'd appreciate it if they started obeying the Constitution."

The attempted arson isn't the first protest of the billboard.

First there were yard signs that said "Keep Christ in Christmas" in front of the billboard, then a man in a Santa Claus costume with a sign, then a family tried to hang a picture of Jesus on top of the billboard.

"It's an ongoing battle that just proves people are too sensitive," says Danielle Roberts, 24, of Pitman, N.J. "The law is clear. While people are entitled to believe in whatever they choose, Pitman should not be giving preferential treatment to one belief over another."

Pitman says it has no plans on forcing the banner to come down.

"I'm split, because I really don't care what anyone chooses to celebrate or for what reasons, but the Christmas sign goes up in the middle of the street and no one says anything," Tyler Lovelace, 22, says. "The second something opposes popular opinion in Pitman, I get 50 people complaining about it and people trying to burn it to the ground."

As for resident Robert Eck's opinion? "Just keep the nog in eggnog."

Nigeria: A new dawn in Tambuwal’s House

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 17 Second

The national leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP was last night locked in a meeting with the remnants of the party caucus in the House of Representatives in Transcorp Hotel, Abuja. Last night’s meeting was one of several carrot and stick options initiated by the party hierarchy to hold other fidgety legislators contemplating leaving the party. The day before the meeting 37 members of the PDP caucus in the House defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC turning the once dominant majority into a minority.

One of the responses from the presidency was the decision of President Goodluck Jonathan to absent himself from the presentation of the 2014 budget proposals to the National Assembly. In his stead, the coordinating minister of the economy and minister of finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala presented the proposals to the two houses of the National Assembly. It was the first time that a sitting and fit president would present the country’s financial projections to the legislature in absentia.

Stakeholders were, however, divided whether the president was right to absent himself from the presentation or not.
The absence of the president some alleged, was out of apprehension that the APC members and especially the new ones just decamped from the PDP would embarrass the president by booing him.
It was, however, learnt that this year was not the first time that such threats of booing the president were perceived.
One source revealed that in the past when such threats were made, the then Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly, Senator Joy Emodi took time to identify the source of such threats and worked on them to mollify them and sometimes, got some of the members to clap for the president during his budget speech.
However, Mrs. Emodi was eased out of office few months ago following an alleged face off between her and some presidency officials who sought to create what she allegedly described as a parallel and divisive support structure for the presidency in the National Assembly.

Wednesday’s defection inevitably made the PDP to for the first time since the advent of democratic rule in 1999 to lose its plurality of members in the House of Representatives as the party slipped in membership strength from 208 to 171.
What was a loss for the PDP turned into a gain for the APC which transformed itself from a minority party to the majority party in the House with 174 members.
Even though the APC now has the highest number of members, the party is still short of an overall majority in the 360 member House.

Labour Party, the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA and Accord, together have a membership of 17, giving the impression that they could become the deciding factors in any partisan dispute. That prospect is, however, diluted by the fact that as many as 40 other members of the PDP are also waiting in the wings to leave the party.
The 40 or so members who are allegedly waiting, it was learnt, were those who decided to tread the path of caution, apparently afraid that their seats could be endangered by whatever scheme that the PDP could marshal to hit at the renegade legislators.

It was as such not surprising that 57 of the lawmakers supportive of the now defunct nPDP in the House and 20 senators also inclined to the faction of the PDP went to court for an order to restrain the PDP or the National Assembly leadership from declaring their seats vacant in the event of defection.
The members were guarding their seats against the background of constitutional provisions that members who leave their parties must vacate their seats except in the case of the factionalisation of the party on which they were elected.
The PDP leadership has on its part sought to pooh-pooh insinuations that the emergence of the nPDP does not amount to the emergence of a new faction and have cited the court pronouncement that the Bamanga Tukur led mainstream of the party is the only recognized leadership.

It was being expected that the party would raise such issues with the members last night as the meeting was yet to commence as at press time yesterday.
In a recent meeting with senators, Tukur had issued the carrot of a return ticket to senators, a promise, that inevitably quickly boomeranged given the aspiration of many second term governors to move to the Senate or to stop some of their senators from returning.
It was following that interaction with senators that PDP governors again called for the removal of Tukur as national chairman. What was thought to be a respite for the beleaguered national chairman following the exit of the five nPDP governors from the party, it seemed, was not a respite after all.

So, at yesterday’s night meeting the national chairman was expected to be more tactful in making any promises of giving re-election tickets to the legislators as a quid pro quo for their remaining in the party.
Whatever the actions of the PDP leadership, it is certain that the PDP in the House of Representatives would in the foreseeable future play a secondary role in the affairs of the House.
After his heartfelt umbrages against the policies and points men of the administration, there are few doubts about the political inclinations of Speaker Aminu Waziri Tambuwal. Though he did not join the other 10 members from Sokoto State to defect, few doubt that Tambuwal is heart and soul in the APC.
His remaining in the PDP according to some sources is just a matter of convenience as defecting would do little to his continued leadership of the House.

The same, however, cannot be said of others on the PDP side of the leadership, particularly the deputy speaker, Chief Emeka Ihedioha who given his alleged gubernatorial aspiration in his native Imo State would think twice about defecting.
Sources in the House have told Vanguard that a change in the leadership would be effected on resumption after the yuletide break. It was learnt that an attempt may be made to alter the rules of the House to preserve the status quo, but how successful such a move could be has remained an issue.
However, Ihedioha as deputy speaker was elected by the House and not by a party caucus and unless the APC members are able to mobilize two-thirds of the members they may be unable to shove him aside. His personal chemistry with members may inevitably determine his fate.

However, for the other party leaders who were appointed by the party caucus, it is expected that they would automatically revert to minority positions in the New Year.
The prospect of the incumbent minority leader, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila becoming the Majority Leader and leading the affairs of the House is probably one of the factors that may have agonized the PDP national leadership and the presidency.
Gbajabiamila, a strong critic of the Jonathan administration is also one of the closest allies of the APC leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

There are suggestions that in the new dispensation that Gbajabiamila would skip the presentation of government bills as majority leaders have done since 1999, and leave same for the minority leader from the PDP.
The outlook for the PDP has never been this bad and it was thus not surprising that the president skipped his normal schedule of presenting the budget yesterday.
Pitiably, he has plenty more of such days ahead!

NLC urges ASUU to double productivity

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 10 Second

Awka – The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) in Anambra has called on university lecturers to work harder to make up for the 25 weeks lost to their strike.

Mr Patrick Obianyo, the Chairman of the congress in the state, made the call while speaking  in Awka on Friday.

Obianyo described the suspended strike which lasted five months and 18 days as not only regrettable but avoidable.

He, however, commended the federal government for finding a common ground with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) on the issues raised.

He said that their action showed responsibility and was in the interest of the country’s education sector.

“The NLC thanks God for helping us see the end of the strike after a period of nearly six months.

“We want members of ASUU to double their productivity so that we can reduce the extent of damage resulting from the industrial action.

“The government has shown character and demonstrated faith with the union; it is not cowardice, so students and teachers must justify the gains of that struggle,” he said.

The labour leader pointed out that there was need for healthy industrial relations between governments at all levels and the labour unions.

He said it would make for easy resolution of differences and prevent prolonged negotiations.

ASUU on Tuesday suspended its industrial action which commenced on July 1

Jonathan ‘ll win northern votes in 2015, Tukur declares

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 46 Second

The Speaker, House of Representatives, Alhaji Aminu Tambuwal, is set to clash with the leadership of his party, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, following the party’s request, yesterday, that he declare the seats of all 37 House members that defected from the party to the All Progressives Congress, APC, vacant.

Meanwhile, the national chairman of the party, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, who is fighting moves by the party’s governors and some stakeholders to shove him aside fought back yesterday, saying his antagonists were inspired by their determination to stop the re-election of President Goodluck Jonathan, a plan he said, was bound to fail.

His assertion nonetheless, Governor Sule Lamido of Jigawa State in a terse statement, yesterday, called on President Jonathan to intervene in PDP affairs before the party is destroyed by what he described as an inept leadership under Tukur.

PDP’s statement
PDP, in a statement, said the claim of the defectors that they had obtained a court injunction stopping the Speaker and Senate President from declaring their seats vacant was false.

The statement by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Chief Olisa Metuh, said: “We have, after a careful review, discovered that this claim is false. For the avoidance of doubt, the order of the court clearly says that status quo be maintained, which means the affected members shall remain members of the PDP.

“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in Section 68 (i) (g) clearly spells out the consequences of cross carpeting when there is no division in any party.

“We wish to re-emphasise here that the courts have pronounced, and INEC has concurred that there are no factions in PDP.
“Since the affected members have renounced their membership of PDP, we call on the Presiding Officer in the House of Representatives to declare the 37 seats vacant without any further delay.
“This action shall be in adherence to our grand norm, which is the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).”

Speaker’s situation
There were, however, indications yesterday that Speaker would ignore the call, putting him on a collision course with the party leadership.

A source close to the Speaker told Vanguard yesterday: “There is no way that the Speaker can act on the call or are you not aware of the court injunction obtained by the 57 members stopping the Speaker from declaring their seats vacant?”

Told of the PDP’s argument that the court injunction required all parties to maintain the status quo, the source said “Yes. Maintain status quo depends on the interpretation of who it favours.”

Besides, the movement of 10 of the 11 members of the House from Sokoto State, it was learnt, may have also tied the hands of the Speaker given his close relationship with the 10 members who are from his home state.
With the defection, Tambuwal is the only member of the Sokoto State delegation to the House still on the PDP ticket.

Jigawa gov’s appeal
Meanwhile, Governor Sule Lamido of of Jigawa State called on President Jonathan to save the party.
In a statement entitled Is it Too Late to Intervene, issued by the Jigawa State Director of Press, Alhaji Umar Kyari said: “I am short of words to express my pain. It is agonising to see the party built in every home, in every village, town and city all over Nigeria with lots of sweat and sacrifice being destroyed.

“Is it too late for the leader of the party to intervene and save our party? Nigerian democracy must not be truncated.”

Tukur
Meanwhile, Tukur has said the PDP crises were due to blind ambitions to stop Jonathan from re-election in 2015.
He said: “The crises we are witnessing in PDP are about 2015. The promoters are members who wanted to be President at all costs; they are those who wanted to be Vice President at all costs and those who wanted to seek re-election as governors.”

He spoke, yesterday, when a delegation of PDP youths from 19 northern states led by Mr. Galadima Yahya, paid him a solidarity visit at his Wuse 2 residence in Abuja.

Tukur said: “The electorate in the North will elect Jonathan. If you go to them, they will tell you ‘when those who are forming various parties were in power, what did they do for us?’”

Nigeria: 35 Kano women fail mass wedding test over HIV, pregnancy

Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second

KANO — Thirty-five women were, yesterday, disqualified by the Kano State Hisbah Board from participating in the mass wedding organised and sponsored by the state government.

Those disqualified included 19 divorcees said to have tested  positive to HIV and 16 others said to be pregnant.

Altogether, at least 1, 111 divorcees and widows from the 44 local government areas in the state were joined in matrimony at the City Central Mosque during a brief but colourful ceremony.

It is another round of mass wedding conducted by the Chief Imam of Kano Central Mosque, Professor Muhammad Zaharadeen.

The event was attended by the state Deputy Governor, Dr Umar Ganduje, along with top Islamic clerics across the state.

However, each of the grooms signed an undertaking not to divorce their spouses without recourse to the board, as contravention will attract a N50,000 fine.

Addressing the couples shortly after the ceremony, Commandant, Kano Hisbah Board, Sheik Daurawa explained that the measure was adopted to check rising cases of divorce in the state.

He said: “We cannot fold our arms and watch our heritage destroyed. What we have done remains the best in the light of several cases of divorce among couples in the state, to halt the destruction and bastardization of our heritage,” Daurawa said.

Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of Kano State  hosted the couples to a grand reception at the Government House, beamed live on radio and television stations across the country

NFA pleased with Flamingoes’ World Cup foes

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 28 Second

Abuja – The Nigeria Football Association (NFA) has expressed satisfaction with the draw of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup that pitched the under-17 national team with Mexico, Colombia and China PR.

NFA’s Chief Technical Officer, Abdulrafiu Yusuf, said on Friday in Abuja that the draws were a good one for the team known as the Flamingoes.

The draws were held on Dec. 17 at the Antigua Aduana, San Jose, Costa Rica.

It is for the fourth edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup billed to hold in Costa Rica from March 15 to April 4.

“The draw is a good one for Nigeria because we have an Asian team and two South American teams there and I don’t think the South Americans will give us a problem.

“It is only China I see that might want to prove a little bit hard because they pace well; but we have players on ground to douse their threat,’’ Yusuf said.

He, however, noted that though the team did not play any qualifying match to test their strength, they had no cause to worry.

The team qualified automatically for the World Cup without playing any qualifiers after South Sudan withdrew from the African qualifiers.

“Luckily for us, we still have about four or five of the players that were in the 2012 edition who made the team.

“So, we will use them as the base of the team to build the other players around them,’’ Yusuf said.

That Flamingoes crashed out of the 2012 edition in Azerbaijan in the quarter-final stage after losing to France 3-5 on penalties.

“They will resume camp on Jan. 6 and will remain in camp all through, till they go for the tournament.

“Also, there are local and international friendly matches being organised for them and there will be an eight-nation tournament coming up in February.

“So, that we are hopeful that the practice will herald their better performance when the tournament starts proper,’’ Yusuf said.

However, Coach of Kogi United FC, Fatai Remo advised the NFA to ensure that the team had adequate preparation.

“Thank God, we are not facing the consequences of appointing the coach late; this is probably due to the fact that we are a power house in female football in Africa.

“But it will be a different ball game on the World stage, so we need to put a lot of effort into the team’s preparation.

“I think we will be able to scale through from the group after which we will pick up from there,’’ Osho said.

A sports journalist, Rilwan Abdusalam, said that with good preparation and exposure to friendly games, we should be confident that the team would be able to surpass its previous feat.

“We have been able to up our game in that category at the 2010 and 2012 editions, unlike at the inaugural edition in 2008 when we just went there to complete the numbers.

“This shows that we have improved a bit over the years and looking at the draw and the records of the teams we have been drawn with, China is the only country that can match our pedigree.

“This is because they are respected for their fast pace football and their strength and stamina level at that age category cannot be compared to any other team in the group.

“But with good and early preparations and exposure to friendly matches, I see our girls surpassing our quarter-final record,’’ Abdulsalam said.

The World Cup will be played across four stadia, three in San Jose and one in Liberia, from March 15 to April 4.

Nigeria will start its campaign at the mundial on March 16 against China PR and face Colombia on March 19, both in San Jose.

The Flamingoes will play their last group match against Mexico on March 23 in Liberia, to finish the first round of the tournament.

Obasanjo/Iyabo feud: Why we won’t intervene— Yoruba elders

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 39 Second

Suggestions that Yoruba  elders will intervene in the feud between former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo and his daughter, Iyabo, were yesterday ruled out as prominent leaders from the South-West said they would not mediate.

In ruling themselves out from brokering an end to the face-off between father and daughter, the elders affirmed that it was a family feud which was best left to insiders.

However, Second Republic Senator and Yoruba leader, Senator Ayo Fasanmi called on the National Assembly to probe the issues raised against Obasanjo by his daughter.

Among other Yoruba leaders who commented on the feud yesterday were Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti; Afenifere stalwart, Chief Ayo Adebanjo; Second Republic Minister of Justice and Attorney-General, Chief Richard Akinjide (SAN), and one time leader of the Alliance for Democracy, Senator Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa.

Group supports Iyabo

Also yesterday, support came the way of Senator Iyabo Obasanjo from a group, Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria, FEHN, which said that the former senator and first daughter should not be castigated based on the fact that she knows her father more than many other commentators.

The feud between father and daughter came to public knowledge upon an open letter to Obasanjo from Iyabo exclusively published by Vanguard last Wednesday.

In the letter, Senator Iyabo Obasanjo described her father as a liar, wife beater, manipulator, two-faced hypocrite, who orchestrated a third term plot in office despite denials to the contrary.

It’s their problem— Fasoranti

Speaking on the squabble, leader of the Yoruba socio-political group Afenifere, Chief Fasoranti, yesterday, said the group has no business in the family matter that is tearing Obasanjo’s family apart.

He said: “I do not think we will like to intervene in it because it is between the father and the daughter. They know themselves.
“If it was done in bad taste, that is their problem. It shows how they relate with themselves at home. We have no business mediating in their private matter.

“Let them settle their quarrel themselves. No Yoruba leader would interfere in the Obasanjo/daughter quarrel. It is their family matter and it has nothing to do with Nigeria.
“There are other pressing national matters to attend to than the Obasanjo/daughter crisis. So, there is nothing we as elders can say or do.”

It’s for NASS—Fasanmi

Another Yoruba elder, Senator Ayo Fasanmi who described the rift between the former President and his daughter as a very sensitive issue, said he would not support Yoruba elders dabbling into the matter.

Speaking on telephone in Osogbo yesterday, Fasanmi said Senator Iyabo Obasanjo’s letter to her father was very indicting.
He said the cross fire between the father and his daughter was a matter that cannot be swept under the carpet, but should be thoroughly investigated by prominent leaders in the country, including members of the National Assembly.

He said: “The National Assembly should as a matter of urgency set up a panel comprising prominent members of the assembly to investigate all the weighty allegations made by Iyabo Obasanjo in the interest of the nation.

“There must not be a cover up in the matter. It bothers on morality and integrity of Obasanjo and Nigerians deserve the right to know the truth of the matter as a leader in his (Obasanjo) own right.”

Fasanmi also urged Nigerians not to blame Iyabo Obasanjo, saying “Obasanjo wrote an open letter to President Goodluck Jonathan recently.

“If he has the right to do so, I believe Iyabo also has the right to write to her father and advise him on the right thing to do.”
However, he stated that he would not support Yoruba elders intervening in the current impasse between Obasanjo and his daughter, saying that it was strictly a family and an internal affair, which needs to be handled at the family level.

A family matter— Adebanjo

Also, Afenifere stalwart, Chief Ayo Adebanjo, who spoke with Vanguard on the telephone, said it was a family matter which needs no outsider intervention.

Adebanjo said: “What are you intervening in a family matter for? The girl is saying what she is experiencing with her father, what do you want to dispute there?

“I believe it is purely a family matter. Another thing is that, as far as I am concerned, it shows how unfortunate Nigeria has been to have had the type of person that has ruled us for 10 years.”

Olu Falae, Akinjide, Akinfenwa

On his part, former Minister of Finance, Chief Olu Falae said: “Well, it is a family matter between a father and daughter.
“As far as I am aware, there is no room for anyone getting involved in a family matter. It is a pure family matter which we know nothing about.”

When Vanguard called Chief Richard Akinjide (SAN), and asked if Yoruba elders should intervene, the former Minister of Justice said emphatic ‘No’ without giving further explanation.

Also, Chief Mojisoluwa Akinfenwa, another respected Yoruba leader simply said it is a Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, affair and would not want to say anything about it.

He said: “It is the internal crisis of PDP. Let them settle it as a family problem.”

However, a chieftain of the PDP, Senator Lekan Balogun said although he and Chief Obasanjo were not best of friends, he felt the crisis between father and daughter should not be allowed to aggravate.

He said: “We will do our best. I will try and talk to Iyabo first and then her father. We cannot sit down and watch the issue to degenerate. “It is only Chief Obasanjo and I who are not best of friends but I will call Iyabo.”

‘Obasanjo’s letter to Jonathan worse’

Meanwhile, as reactions continued to trail Senator Iyabo Obasanjo’s letter to her father, Chairman of the Foundation for Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria, FEHN, Mr. Allen Onyema, said Iyabo should not be castigated because “she knows her father more than anyone else.”

Onyema, who said that Obasanjo’s 18-page letter to President Goodluck Jonathan last week was capable of whipping up sentiments that can lead to civil war, added that Nigerians do not need Iyabo’s letter to know that Obasanjo “has nothing to offer Nigeria now than instability.”

Onyema said: “The man was playing with treason. Imagine an old man trying to whip up sentiments that can lead to war.
“Obasanjo’s public letter to President Jonathan is absurd because he did worse things when he was President.”
