BBA 2013: Dillish and Elikem – the playmates

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 0 Second

What do a monster, a ninja and a princess under an evil spell have in common? They are all characters that found their way into the Big Brother House this afternoon; courtesy of Elikem and Dillish.

Today the Housemates were given boxes full of props for their new Task that will see the Housemates making a creative and fun gift for Biggie that they will show off at the Task Presentation on Thursday.

This is a Task that the ever playful Elikem seemed to take to like fish to water. As soon as the Housemates unpacked their toys, the Ghanaian grabbed himself a skull mask and did his best to try and give the girls a fright but unfortunately for him the ladies of The Chase do not scare so easily.

After that he seized a sword, he flung his sword all around as he pretended to be a ninja and even had the humorous Chinese accent to accompany his new character. Soon afterwards his good buddy Dillish joined in, she was the princess in her tiara and he was the shining prince with his mighty sword.

These two always seems to have such fun together, don't they?

BBA 2013: Beverly feeling blue?

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 5 Second

The greatest loneliness imaginable is the kind that grips you when you are in a crowded room.

That is exactly how Beverly seems to feel today. Unlike her country mate Melvin who woke feeling as right as rain – singing and dancing in the House, the Nigerian lass has been in low spirits. And who could blame her?

The young model has just not been able to snap back into her usual vivacious ways ever since her man Angelo and her love interest turned BFF Bimp were both Evicted on the same night, this past Sunday. After the two men, that she was closest to, got booted out she even cried to herself under the covers but luckily Melvin was there to comfort her.

Just last night the young lingerie model got into an argument with Elikem; she expressed her disappointment at Elikem for not comforting her when Angelo was Evicted even though the Ghanaian was the one that swapped her South African boo in order to save himself from Evictions.

Shame poor Beverly it can’t be easy loosing two of the people that you are closest to at such a critical stage in the game but you gotta stay strong girl, Chase that money and make Angelo and Bimp proud of you.

BBA 2013: As merry as a Melvin

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 5 Second

Guess who woke up on the right side of bed today? Melvin of course.

The Ruby gent spent the morning in the best of moods; dancing and singing around the House and if there is anyone in the House that has reason to feel extra jolly this week it is this Nigerian fellow. Lady fortune shined brightly upon him yesterday when the young model found himself being crowned as the ruler of the Ruby House.

It was Bimp that was meant to be Head of House but due to his Eviction on Sunday a new HoH had to be chosen. The runner up on last week's HoH challenge Angelo would have been the fitting candidate but he too has been Evicted and therefore the ball fell in Melvin's court.

How lucky can one be? Super lucky it seems! This is not the first time that Melvin has had the fortune of landing the HoH chieftainship after the incoming HoH gets booted out. He also was crowned the captain of the Diamonds when Hakeem got Evicted.

Who says lightning never strikes twice in the same place? It certainly does in Melvin's world. Once again, well done to you Melvin on being crowned the final Head of House of Big Brother The Chase.

Hostages kill Iowa prison escapee who shot deputy

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 10 Second
BEDFORD, Iowa — An escaped convict broke into the home of a southwest Iowa couple Monday night and held them at gunpoint for several hours before one of the hostages shot and killed the intruder, police said Tuesday.

Rodney Eugene Long, 38, broke out of the Clarinda Correctional Facility about 20 miles away on Friday. He allegedly shot a Taylor County deputy Sunday night after stealing a gun in a home burglary and led police on a 40-minute chase, triggering a massive manhunt Monday in the area.

Around 10:15 p.m. CT Monday, Long broke into the house of a retired prison guard and his wife, who had a shotgun in the house, authorities said. The couple, Jerome and Carolyn Mauderly, ages 71 and 66, shot and killed Long in their kitchen.

Officials found him lying face down with one wound. They have not said who killed Long.

Authorities Monday described Long as armed and dangerous and urged the public not to approach him if they saw him.

Residents of Taylor County, which has a population of about 6,300, reported taking precautions from locking their doors to escorting one another to their vehicles as they awaited news of a capture.

The wounded deputy, Dan Wyckoff, 33, remained in an Omaha, Neb., hospital in stable condition late Monday with injuries that are not life threatening, officials said. They credit his survival to wearing a protective vest.

"It definitely saved his life, or at least saved him from serious, serious injury," said Mitch Mortved, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation special agent in charge.

Long is the first person to escape from the Clarinda Correctional Facility since 1997, officials said. Long's escape was the first this year from any Iowa prison.

Authorities gave this account of how the manhunt unfolded:

Long escaped from the facility sometime between 4 and 7 a.m. CT Friday.

On Sunday night, he was spotted walking along Iowa 2, just east of New Market. Taylor County deputies responded.

Wyckoff, who has been with the department for two years, arrived first. When Wyckoff got out of his vehicle, Long allegedly shot the deputy twice, once in the left arm and once in his abdomen, stole the deputy's unmarked truck and fled.

A second deputy picked up Wyckoff moments later and then pursued Long, officials said. He maintained the pursuit until other law enforcement agencies arrived to assist, then took Wyckoff to a waiting ambulance.

Other officers continued chasing Long and exchanged gunfire with him during the 40-minute chase, which ended when Long rolled the vehicle several times. He fled on foot into nearby fields.

Authorities could not say how many shots were fired.

Officers from more than a dozen agencies in Iowa, Missouri, and Nebraska combed the area searching for Long. The Iowa State Patrol and Nebraska State Patrol aided the search in aircraft. Officials checked houses and outbuildings in the area.

The Junction Cafe here was busier than usual Monday, full of diners anxious to hear updates and share rumors about a manhunt. The cafe, at the edge of Bedford, is less than five miles from where the crash occurred.

Waitress Josie Gray said she was at home Sunday night when she saw "like 20 cops" go speeding by, joining the chase, she surmised later.

When Long was at large, residents remained wary.

Gray said when she went outside to lock the doors on her family's vehicles Sunday, an acquaintance stood guard on the porch with a gun. In a change from normal practice, the management at the cafe kept the back door locked all day.

As a Christian, we should not rejoice over the death of any one. wewould have preferred that Shekau was caught alive and arraigned before a court. – Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor.

The news in the internet in the last two days, has been the speculation that Imam Shekau, the Leader of the Islamic terror group, Boko Haram may have died from the gunshot wound he sustained last month and that Christian leaders are celebrating over it.

Against that backdrop, Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, the leader of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) express surprises on such reports credited to them.
Pastor Oritsejafor said that “I have not heard the story (Shakau's death) yet, but if it is true, as a Christian, we should not rejoice over the death of any one".

“Nevertheless I must commend the security forces, which had taken this war against terrorism in this country to a new and commendable height by the accomplishment they had achieved in the last couple of months.”
According to him, "the Christian community in Nigeria would have preferred that Shekau was caught alive and arraigned before a court, where Nigerians would have the opportunity of hearing his explanation for the mindless killings of innocent Nigerians.

300-ton water leak at Japan N-plant

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 46 Second
The operator of Japan's tsunami-crippled nuclear power plant has said that about 300 tons of highly radioactive water have leaked from one of the hundreds of storage tanks there – its worst leak yet from one of the vessels.

Tokyo Electric Power Co (Tepco) said the contaminated water leaked from a steel storage tank at the wrecked Fukushima Dai-ichi plant. The company has not yet determined how or where the water leaked, but suspects it did so through a valve connected to a gutter around the tank.

Tepco spokesman Masayuki Ono said the leaked water seeped into the ground after largely escaping piles of sandbags added to a concrete barrier around the tank. Workers were pumping out the puddle and the remaining water in the tank and will transfer it to other containers.

The water's radiation level, measured about 2ft (50cm) above the puddle, is about 100 millisieverts per hour – five times the annual exposure limit for plant workers, Mr Ono said.

The plant suffered multiple meltdowns following Japan's massive earthquake and tsunami in March 2011. Hundreds of tanks were built around the plant to store massive amounts of contaminated water coming from the three melted reactors, as well as underground water running into reactor and turbine basements.

Four other tanks of the same design had similar leaks since last year. Mr Ono said the latest leak was the worst from a tank in terms of volume.

Tepco has said the tanks that have leaked used rubber seams and were intended to last about five years. Mr Ono said the company plans to build additional tanks with welded seams that are more watertight.

The massive amount of radioactive water is among the most pressing issues affecting the clean-up process, which is expected to take decades.

There have been other leaks of contaminated water at the plant, and some of it is entering the sea.

Plant workers are trying to reduce the leaks using measures such as building chemical underground walls, but they have made little improvement.

Copper in water and food ’causes Alzheimer’s to progress’

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 44 Second
Scientists found strong evidence that copper helps to promote the changes in the brain underlying Alzheimer's.

But they say there is little that can be done about it because copper is so abundant in the diet and also vital to health.

The metal, found in food and drinking water, plays important roles in nerve function, bone growth, the formation of connective tissue, and hormone secretion.

Researchers in the US conducted a series of experiments on mice given trace amounts of copper in their drinking water.

In human terms the doses were equivalent to the amount of copper people consume in a normal diet, and about a tenth of what is allowed under US water quality standards.

DISRUPTED

The study, reported in the journal 'Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences', showed that copper accumulating in the brain disrupted the natural removal of toxic amyloid beta protein, which is strongly implicated in Alzheimer's disease.

Copper also directly stimulated neurons that increased the production of amyloid beta, and caused the proteins to clog together in lumps that could not be cleared.

"It is clear that, over time, copper's cumulative effect is to impair the systems by which amyloid beta is removed from the brain," said study leader Professor Rashid Deane, from the University of Rochester Medical Centre in New York.

"This impairment is one of the key factors that cause the protein to accumulate in the brain and form the plaques that are the hallmark of Alzheimer's."

Since copper was so essential to the body, the findings had to be treated with caution, he added. "Copper is an essential metal and it is clear that these effects are due to exposure over a long period of time.

"The key will be striking the right balance between too little and too much copper consumption."

He added that diet could ultimately play a key role in regulating the process.

Mom of California kidnap victim died of blows to head

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 56 Second
(Reuters) – The mother of Southern California kidnap victim Hannah Anderson died of blunt force trauma to the head, the San Diego County Medical Examiner said Monday.

Christina Anderson, whose body was found in the burned-out garage of suspected kidnapper James DiMaggio near a crow bar and a blood stain, died in the August 4 tragedy along with her 8-year-old son, Ethan and the family dog, Cali.

Hannah, 16, was discovered with DiMaggio days later in the Idaho wilderness, after a widely distributed amber alert that included flashing freeway signs and text messages sent to mobile phones across four states.

After the pair was spotted by local ranchers, officials rescued Hannah and killed DiMaggio.

The case is puzzling in part because DiMaggio was a longtime friend of Hannah's parents, Christina and Brett, and was best man at their wedding.

Authorities have said they believe he set into motion the deadly chain of events two weeks ago and took Hannah with him against her will. But they have not yet offered clues as to why he acted as he did.

The badly burned body of Ethan Anderson was found in a different part of the wreckage than his mother. Authorities have not yet released a cause of death for him.

The remains of Christina Anderson, 44, were found beneath a tarp in the garage of DiMaggio's log cabin style house in Boulevard, about 25 miles east of San Diego.

But in yet another poignant twist, a friend of the DiMaggio family said Monday that James DiMaggio made Brett Anderson's mother, Bernice, the beneficiary of a $112,000 life insurance policy.

The friend, Andrew Spanswick, said the money was intended for Ethan and Hannah and that DiMaggio made Bernice Anderson his beneficiary in 2011.

"He was living with Bernice at the time while he saved up to buy his house," said Spanswick.

He wanted to leave money to Ethan and Hannah, but didn't trust their parents to handle it properly, Spanswick said, so DiMaggio specified Bernice Anderson as his beneficiary.

Lora DiMaggio Robinson, DiMaggio's sister, does not plan to contest the payment, Spanswick said.
