BBA 2013: Nando’s babysitter

Read Time:58 Second

Bimp has taken on a role he never thought in a million years he would take on.

When Bimp came into the game, he probably didn’t imagine he would play the game and be a bouncer at the same time. For the past two nights the Ethiopian has sacrificed sleep and fun times to be his best friend Nando’s security guard and babysitter.

The Chasemate has been on hand babysitting the outspoken Tanzanian, who is in the throes of a with Ghana’s Elikem .

Nando has battled insomnia for the past couple of days and it has evidently gotten worse since his fight with Elikem broke out on Friday night. Bimp’s bed is next to Nando’s and since the fight went down, the Ethiopian has been keeping an eagle eye on the unpredictable Housemate.

Every night, Nando has tossed and turned and every time he makes a move, Bimp is always there asking him where he is going and has even accompanied him to other parts of the House where he just might start trouble.

Oh dear!

Nigeria: Manufacturers raise concern over charges on BoI loans

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 50 Second

Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, MAN Ikeja branch, has expressed concern over numerous charges their members are made to pay to secure the Bank of Industry, BoI, loans, calling for immediate review and possible reduction.

Expressing this position at a business luncheon for chief executives and managing directors of manufacturing companies under the chapter, the chairman, Rev. Isaac Ade Agoye, said the problem has the capacity of inhibiting their collective growth as manufacturers, as well as hamper the survival of the real sector if unattended.

He noted that in all, manufacturers pay as much as 21.125 percent interest on BoI’s loans, saying, ‘We consider these surcharges as too cumbersome and demanding, hence we invited the BoI management for enlightenment.”

“We believe that if manufacturing is made easy and less cumbersome by way of accessibility of loans, manufacturers will obviously be encouraged and this could act as a stop-gap measure for militating the high rate of unemployment. We have the capacity to do so, all we need is encouragement,” Agoye added.

Going forward, he said that the association would form a working committee that would collaborate with the management of BoI to fathom ways of either eliminating or reducing those surcharges to the barest minimum.

He implored the management of BoI to look at the various surcharges with a view of doing away with some of them that are inimical and irrelevant to the exercise of lending, adding that, ‘a situation where charges on loans amount to 21.215 percent and above is certainly worrisome.

Speaking on the theme of the programme, “Bridging the Gap between Manufacturing and the Bank of Industry”, the Managing Director, BoI, Ms Evelyn Oputu, represented by Mohammed Alkali, ED, Operations, said that interest charges on loans do not constitute as much problem as infrastructural problem, generating own power and lack of incentives.

She assured that as part of incentivising the real sector, the BoI is engaging in continuous advocacy with all stakeholders towards improving the operational environment, adding that the bank leverages international resources for the development of the real sector in the country through collaboration with UNIDO, UNDP and AGOA among others.

Ngerian Scholars frown at takeover of Rivers Assembly

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second

Some scholars on Sunday described National Assembly’s takeover of the statutory functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly as  a violation of the people’s rights.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the National Assembly on Thursday took over the functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly in a bid to tackle the crisis rocking the state.

The Senate which announced the development said that the action was pursuant to Section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).

It said that the National Assembly would take charge pending resolution of the political crisis in the state.

The Head, Department of Political Science, University of Lagos, Prof. Solomon Akinboye, told NAN that the action was unfortunate and violated the rights of Rivers people.

“Taking over the functions of the house is not the solution to the crisis. The situation is becoming more chaotic and calls for concern.

“The people of Rivers should be able to settle their issues internally and amicably in order to move forward,’’ he said.

Dr Samuel Ugo, Senior Lecturer, also of the Department of Political Science, University of Lagos, alleged that the action was a ploy to get rid of the state government.

Ugo said that the takeover meant that decisions on issues concerning the state would henceforth be taken by the National Assembly.

He expressed the worry that the situation may degenerate into declaration of a state of emergency in the state, whereby the governor would be suspended until return of normalcy.

Prof. Yomi Akinyeye, a Professor of History and Strategic Studies, University of Lagos, also frowned at the development.

He said that the National Assembly’s action was indirect declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers.

“It is only where there are security concerns and a perceived breakdown of law and order that such a decision could be taken.

“One expected the National Assembly to help in putting adequate machineries in place to investigate the issues that led to the crisis.’’

The don added that some members of the public expected the National Assembly to apportion blames where necessary and make a way for the house of assembly to function well,” he said.

Nigeria Islamists kill 20 civilians in Borno

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 7 Second

Suspected members of Nigeria’s Islamist group Boko Haram shot dead more than 20 civilians when a vigilante group attacked them in the northern Borno state, a military spokesman said Sunday.

“The suspected sect members came armed and fired sporadic shots that killed over twenty innocent civilians,” Haruna Mohammed Sani, spokesman for the Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) said.

The violence took place on Saturday in Dawashe village, the army lieutenant said in a statement.

He said men from the Civilian Joint Task Force, a vigilante group formed in Boko Haram’s bastion Maiduguri to combat the Islamist gunmen who have been terrorising the region for years, entered Dawashe to search for suspects.

Suspected Boko Haram members subsequently opened fire in the village, the spokesman said, adding that the 20 victims were mostly fishermen and traders.

Sani said a dozen other civilians sustained gunshot wounds during the incident but provided no information on casualties among the belligerents.

The toll and circumstances of the incident could not immediately be verified independently.

The MNJTF, a joint military force set up in 1998 to combat border crimes, consists of troops from Nigeria, Chad and Niger.

Its mandate was recently expanded to fight Boko Haram, whose insurgency is estimated to have cost 3,600 lives since 2009, including killings by security forces.

Nigeria:APC REGISTRATION CONTROVERSY ‘ We will take over Abuja if …

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 42 Second

ALL Progressive Congress, APC, has vowed to occupy all public places including the  Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Abuja, the Federal Capital, and the National Assembly if after July 31, the electoral umpire refuses to register it as a political party.

A source in INEC allegedly hinted that as a result of pressure from ‘the powers-that-be’, APC may not be registered as the Commission use the court case brought against INEC by the rival African Peoples Congress, which is also laying claim to the APC acronym, as the reason.

Buhari, CPC; Onu,ANPP; Okorocha, APGA and Tinubu, ACN

Reacting to the alleged plan,  a member of the disbanded Joint Merger Committee and National Deputy Secretary of Congress for Progressive Change, Chief Okoi Obono-Obla, dismissed it saying the INEC committee that inspected the APC office and the documents presented to it gave the merger of political parties a pass mark.

Obono-Obla told Sunday Vanguard: “There is no iota of truth in that story. It is speculative because my information from INEC is that APC scored 98 per cent when the INEC team went to inspect our secretariat and look into our documentation. They gave us 98 per cent and the committee recommended strongly that we have met all the requirements and we should be registered.

“INEC met on Thursday to confirm that report and indeed all the reports were approved, so this one you are saying is strange because that case by the phantom APC (African Peoples Congress) has nothing to do with us and it cannot be used as a guise to deny us registration. If that is done, we will know that truly INEC is an appendage of the PDP (Peoples Democratic Party).

“I do not believe that INEC is an appendage of PDP but if they try to deny us registration, then, I will know that there is no hope for Nigeria again. The only option for the country will be what is happening in Egypt, what is happening in Turkey what is happening in Brazil.

“We must mobilize all our supporters all over the country to come to Abuja and embark on hunger strike until it is registered because there is nothing we have done that will deny us registration”.

The CPC chieftain and a former governorship candidate on the platform of National Conscience Party, NCP, in Cross Rivers State, said that APC had applied to INEC to be registered as a political party on June 8th,  after fulfilling all the requirements and was deemed to have been registered going by the law after 30 days of the application.

He however said that INEC claimed that the 30 days started counting from July 1st when the names of the interim national officers were submitted to the Commission and that after July 31st, APC by law would be deemed as being registered.

Also reacting to the alleged plan not to register APC, the National Publicity Secretary of CPC, Rotimi Fashakin said that it was unethical and out of place to react to rumour but added that the law governing political parties in merger arrangement was clear likewise the law for a new party registration.

Thirty-one boat migrants drowned off Libya, survivors say

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 30 Second

ROME  (AFP) – Thirty-one migrants, including nine women, drowned off the coast of Libya during an attempted crossing to Italy according to survivors who managed to complete the journey, Italian media reported Sunday.

A dinghy carrying 53 migrants capsized on Friday evening, and witnesses said 31 of those who had been thrown off it drowned in the accident.

The twenty-two survivors, who come from Nigeria, Gambia, Benin and Senegal, said the dinghy had capsized after three days at sea. They were rescued by a passing merchant ship and taken to Lampedusa island, the reports said.

As the number of boat immigrants attempting the crossing soars in the good weather, rescuers saved another 450 people trying to reach Italy on Friday and Saturday, increasing tensions at the already crowded refugee centre on the island.

Another 92 migrants — including 16 women — were rescued Sunday morning in the Strait of Sicily after their boat got into difficulty.

Since 1999, more than 200,000 people have arrived on Lampedusa — which is closer to North Africa than Italy — making it, along with the Greece-Turkey border, one of the biggest gateways for undocumented migrants and refugees into the European Union.

In nearby Malta, 112 migrants were saved from their drifting dinghy overnight Saturday in a 13-hour operation during which eight of those rescued were airlifted to hospital by helicopter for urgent medical attention.

That group — which included 20 women and four children — was suffering from exhaustion, dehydration and sun stroke, a Maltese army spokesman told AFP.

The latest arrivals bring the number of migrants to land on Malta in July to 880 — an all-time record for a month — while 1,200 people in total have landed on the island so far this year.

Nigeria reiterates commitment to diversify economy

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 31 Second

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to diversify the economy from  reliance on the oil sector to the agriculture sector. Mr Greyne Anosike, a director in Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development stated this in a statement issued in Abuja.

According to the statement, the minister stated this when Prof. Oyewole Tomori, President, Nigeria Academy of Science (NAS) led a delegation to his office. It quoted Tijani as saying that the country should begin to marshal an economic plan as crude oil and gas dwindle in the global economic calculations.

‘’The repeated call for diversifying the economy is not a political gimmick, but a purely economic forecast. Nations should begin to evolve long term master plans as oil begins to play less critical role in the affairs of nations in the next decade,’’ the statement said.

It added that the minister observed that most countries have found alternative sources of energy and aggressively embarking on agriculture using modern technology. It is also said that the minister called on the association to evaluate the role it will play to resolve these challenges and come up with a comprehensive proposal to the ministry.

The statement said that the association should take advantage of its agricultural research findings to move the country forward. It stated that the Federal Government has started planning ahead with the approval of 13 airports across the country as perishable cargo terminals and creation of Staple Crop Processing Zones (SCPZ).

The statement quoted Tomori as saying that the association was in the ministry to help with evidence based data driven and scientifically verifiable materials that could help the agriculture sector. It said that the association was capable of evaluating facilities, survey available manpower needs and expertise in the area of documentation, cassava utilisation among others.
