State Police command’s spokesman, Mr. Lucky Uyabeme,  told reporters that the bank raid which took place on  June 14 this year had an insider’s connection.

According to him, “the arrested Operations Manager of the bank is helping the police in investigation. The command will not leave any stone unturned in ensuring that all the hoodlums involved are brought to book.”

“Preliminary investigation revealed an insider connection with the bank robbery as the two keys to the strong room that supposed to be kept by two different senior staff were left with the Operations Manager in turn left the strong room open. The four bullet proof doors were not tampered with. One of the senior staff of the bank who supposed to be with one of the keys to the strong room purported to be sick, handed over the keys”, the PPRO stated.

Nigeria: Obafemi Awolowo University inaugurates N600m ICT centre

Read Time:1 Minute, 53 Second

Ile-Ife (Osun) –  The Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, on Tuesday launched a centre of excellence in software engineering built and equipped at a cost of  N600 million.

The construction of the N450 million building housing the centre was funded by Skye Bank Nigeria Plc.

Procurement and installation of ICT equipment at the centre, valued at $3 million (N450 million), was funded through the Step B/World Bank Project.

The institution’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bamitale Omole, who inaugurated the centre, said that the mission of the university with regard to ICT was to harness modern technology for effectiveness and efficiency.

“The problem of large classes will soon be a thing of the past as lecturers and students can interact real time online,’’ he said.

He appealed to financial institutions, the private sector as well as the institution’s alumni to take a cue from the gesture of Skye Bank.

In his remark, the Group Managing Director of Skye Bank, Mr Kehinde Durosinmi-Etti, said that the decision of the bank to build the centre was in line with the organisation’s philosophy.

“It is our desire to support causes that are of benefit to aid the extension of the frontiers of education.

“The application of information technology in our education has assumed a more important dimension as it confers several advantages.

“It is expected that the ICT centre will enhance the operational efficiency of the university,’’ he said.

Prof. Rowland Ndoma-Egba, Pro Chancellor of the university, commended Skye Bank for the gesture, saying the desire of the university council was to leave the institution better than it met it.

“With this magnanimity from Skye Bank, the university should maintain its lead in ICT education with a view to developing software that is technologically advanced, but purposely indigenous.

“OAU is coming to a point where we should be able to produce indigenous computers, IPADs, IPODs  and other gadgets to address the realities facing Nigeria,’’ Ndoma-Egba said.

The facilities at the centre include a tele-presence centre, cloud computing laboratory, software studio and students’ internet access laboratory.

The centre can accommodate 700 students at a time. (NAN)

Read Time:1 Minute, 56 Second

ADO EKITI—There was commotion at the state secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, yesterday, as some aggrieved members of the party announced the suspension of the chairman, Chief Makanjuola Ogundipe for alleged misappropriation of funds, corruption and inability to carry along other members of the Central Working Committee, CWC, of the party.

The party had been embroiled in controversy over moves to pick a consensus candidate for the 2014 governorship election.

The man at the centre of controversy, Chief Ogundipe, was also accused of unilaterally constituting the 11-member Screening Committee to pick the gubernatorial candidate for the 2014 governorship election.

In a statement by the party’s Public Relations Officer, Pastor Kola Oluwawole, the embattled chairman was suspended for one month, while his deputy, Mr. Femi Bamisile was asked to take over from him.

Trouble was said to have started when the public announcement of the new development, was disrupted by hoodlums.

Newsmen and party faithful subsequently ran for safety, as the hoodlums who were armed with guns, cutlasses and cudgels took over the secretariat while others fled.

The hoodlums indiscriminately fired into the air, apparently to scare away the group that had wanted to address the press conference

In the ensuing melee, the PDP state Legal Adviser and former Speaker of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, Mr. Kola Adefemi   and state Auditor, Mr. Olatunji Olanrewaju, who  were said to be loyal to the chairman, sustained head  injuries.

But Chief Ogundipe, who was not at the party’s secretariat at the time of the tussle, claimed ignorance of his removal and the  planned press briefing.

Members of the CWC, who  signed the statement for the suspension on the chairman are, the Secretary of the party, Dr. Tope Aluko, Publicity Secretary, Pastor Kola Oluwawole, state Women’s Leader, Mrs. Busola Oyebode, PDP Vice Chairman, Central, Mr. Femi Ogunleye, State Organising Secretary, Alhaji Lateef Agbaje, the State Treasurer, Mr. Aluko.A.O. and the State Youth Leader, Mr. Tayelolu Olatunji.

Meantime, the Public Relations Officer of the state Police Command, Mr. Victor Babafemi, said police have deployed  men to the party secretariat to maintain law and order.

The police image maker, however, said no arrest have been made.

Nigeria APGA: Umeh’s Victory is dedicated to Late Dim Ojukwu

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 38 Second

UMUAHIA—Chairman of Abia State Chapter of All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, Nnanna Ukaegbu, said Tuesday that the party dedicated the victory by the National Chairman of the party, Chief Victor Umeh, at the Court of Appeal Enugu, to Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu, the late leader of the party.

He said the victory was a way of invoking Ojukwu’s spirit ahead of the November 16, 2013, Anambra State governorship election.

Reacting to Chief Umeh’s victory, Ukaegbu said  Ojukwu’s spirit would be happy with what was happening in the party and would be with members during the November 2013 election.

He said the party had started reaching out to members who might have been aggrieved one way or the other in the course of the crisis, and expressed hope that everybody would be reconciled.

According to him, “First of all, we give all the glory to God, and the judiciary for once again doing the right thing. Actually, this is not the time to gloat over our victory. We still have a great task ahead of us, the November 16, 2013 election in Anambra state. We have a great task of reaching out to those who may have been aggrieved one way or the other or who may not be happy with court judgment.”

On mobilizing members and supporters of the party ahead of Anambra gubernatorial  election in November, he said: “We have already commenced work. APGA is a mass movement, so it will not very difficult for us to get everybody back on track. We are working already. Yesterday [Monday] we were at the Mausoleum of our great leader, Dim Odumegwu Ojukwu, to dedicate the victory to his spirit, and to once again invoke his spirit to lead us in the November 16 battle. I am assuring you that we will once again record a huge victory in Anambra come November 16, 2013”

2014 CHAN: Eagles battle Cote d’Ivoire on artificial pitch

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 13 Second

Nigeria have said they are ready to tackle hosts Cote d’Ivoire on a synthetic pitch in a 2014 CHAN second leg qualifier.

The home-based Eagles beat their Ivorian counterparts 4-1 in the first leg played at the Ahmadu Bello Stadium in Kaduna earlier this month.

“We learnt from the leadership of the NFF that the game will be played on artificial turf and I must say we were delighted because we will give our all on such a pitch but we are keeping our plans close to our chest,” team co-ordinator Emmanuel Atta said on Monday.

Head Coach Stephen Keshi and his assistants were calm over the development because according to team secretary, Dayo Enebi Achor, “Anything they want to throw at us we are sure we have capable hands led by Keshi to counter them.”

The Eagles will resume training on Tuesday morning at the FIFA Goal Project Abuja and will train once in the morning until otherwise decided.

Meanwhile, Super Eagles goalkeeper and skipper Chigozie Agbim was the first to arrive camp on Monday afternoon as the training camp opened for the return leg of the CHAN qualifier final round against Cote D’Ivoire in Abidjan, July 27.

Agbim was soon joined by the likes of Godfrey Oboabona, Azubuike Egwuekwe, Benjamin Francis, Rabiu Ali and by dinner time almost all the 24 players invited for the crucial tie have reported.

River State Crisis: Four northern govs call for Mbu’s removal

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 7 Second

Four Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, Governors from the Northern part of the country, Tuesday, paid a solidarity visit to Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi.

The quartet of Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger, Sule Lamido of Jigawa, Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso of Kano and Murtala Nyako of Adamawa states, arrived the Port Harcourt International Airport  Tuesday afternoon amid protests .

In a joint statement, which was made available to Vanguard, the governors said they were in the Rivers State Government House to visit the governor, whom they described as “our brother and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum” and to ascertain for themselves some of the things they had been reading in the media lately.

Although the governors expressed satisfaction with the peaceful atmosphere in the state despite the political developments there, they said they were shocked over the role being played by the Rivers State Police Commissioner, Mr.  Mbu Joseph Mbu.

The governors said, “We acknowledge the great work Governor Amaechi and his team are doing in Rivers State and commend his maturity and calm even in the face of apparent persecution….

“As Chief Executives of our states who have sworn to protect lives and property in our various states, we are particularly troubled by the development in Rivers State.

“We commend the House of Representatives for its proactive leadership in the crisis and appreciate the Senate committee’s thoroughness in addressing the matter.

“We wish to call on the Inspector General of police to hearken to the voice of reason and immediately redeploy and discipline Commissioner Mbu. His actions smirk of unprofessionalism and political partisanship, which is unbecoming of his office.

“With the way the police is being used and abused and with officers like Mbu in the force, we do not see the need for state governments to fund an antagonistic police and may be forced to reconsider our position on the financial contribution of the states towards the funding of the Nigeria Police.

“Arising from the actions of the police and Mr. Joseph Mbu in Rivers State, the call for state police as a constitutional provision has become a necessity.

“We note that events in Rivers State have again brought to the fore the question of true federalism and the need for institutions derived from constitutions be allowed to function without undue interference.

“As federating units we must be allowed the space to guarantee our people sustainable development as provided by the constitution.
