Fuel Subsidy: House Lifts Ban on Adekanola

Read Time:2 Minute, 2 Second

The House of Representatives has revoked its resolution calling on the federal government to blacklist and prosecute a foremost indigenous firm of chartered accountants and tax practitioners, Olusola Adekanola & Co., for alleged involvement in the petroleum subsidy regime.

The decision by the House to quash the resolution, a fall-out of recommendation by its ad-hoc committee on fuel subsidy probe, was as a result of a petition by Olusola Adekanola & Co., which, according to the House, showed that the accounting firm was never in any way involved in the subsidy regime before the investigation by the House and eventual cessation of service to its employer, Federal Ministry of Finance.

A statement by the media and communication consultant to Olusola Adekanola & Co., Mr. Kazie Uko,  at the weekend quoted the transcript of votes and proceedings of the House, No. 98, dated Wednesday, June 5, 2013, as saying the House in the Committee of the Whole chaired by the deputy speaker, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, considered the report of its Committee on Public Petitions to reconsider the House resolution on the petroleum subsidy report, as it affected Olusola Adekanola & Co. The petition was presented to the House by Hon. Uzo Azubuike (Abia North/Abia South Federal Constituency).

“When the question was put to vote by the House Speaker, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, who presided during the plenary, the House adopted the report and thereafter quashed the earlier recommendation and subsequent resolution to the government to blacklist and prosecute the firm of Olusola Adekanola & Co,” the statement said.

Olusola Adekanola & Co., had in various publications protested its indictment by the House of Representatives ad-hoc committee on petroleum subsidy regime, chaired by Hon. Farouk Lawan, declaring that it was innocent of the allegation of wrong doing against it.

“We hold the House of Representatives committee on fuel subsidy in high esteem and we are sure that it did not have valid information within its reach to premise its recommendations on. We are therefore prepared to avail it information and evidence to assert our innocence on this subject,” executive chairman of Olusola Adekanola & Co, Otunba Olusola Adekanola,  had announced in one the publications.

The statement stated that the management and staff of the accounting firm received the news of the reprieve with thanksgiving to God and gratitude to the House, for correcting the injustice against the firm.

NIGERIA: Sokoto Teachers Dissociate Selves from Strike

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 12 Second

Primary and secondary schools teachers of the Shehu Shagari College of Education (SSCOE), Sokoto, have dissociated themselves from the current strike action embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of SSCOE last week.

This was contained in a statement signed by the chairman of the section, Aliyu Abubakar Yabo, a copy of which was made available to journalists in Sokoto at the weekend.

The statement maintained that the teachers decided to distance themselves from the strike action, considering the fact that the academic staff of the college were fighting for their benefits alone without carrying them along.

The statement called for the immediate call off of the strike for the development of education in the state.

It would be recalled that the academic staff union of the college embarked on strike action last week, following the failure of the state government to implement the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Salary Structure (CONPCASS) since 2009.

The union decried that the state government also failed to implement the 2012 and 2013 annual leave grant, 65 years retirement age for academic staff, migration of chief lecturers, principal and senior lecturers.

The union said the federal government had in 2009, released new circulars for implementation of salary structure for Colleges of Education and Polytechnics and 65 years retirement age for all academic staff in Nigerian tertiary institutions but lamented that Sokoto government failed to implement that in the last four years.

NIGERIA: Military Assures Lagos Residents on Adequate Security

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 40 Second

Following the recent failed attempt by Boko Haram  to simultaneously bomb 16 designated landmarks in Lagos, the military has assured that they are always at alert to  prevent such occurrence.

The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Western Naval Command, who also doubled as the special guest of honour, Rear Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas, made this disclosure during the recent regimental dinner of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF).

The regimental dinner which was held at the Senior Officers mess of the Logistics Command of NAF, Lagos, was hosted by the Air Officer Commanding, Air Vice Marshal Aminu Adamu,  and it afforded  senior officers the opportunity to  the junior ones through regimental and social etiquette.

But for intelligence report gathered by security agencies including the State Security Service (SSS), the sect had attempted to plant terrorists cells in the South-west region with Lagos as its headquarters.

According to Ibas, the recent failed attempt to bomb Lagos   is a sad reminder that evil men do not rest.

“Evil men do not rest so we must always be at an alert in protecting the territorial integrity of Nigeria. True, Nigeria is faced with diverse challenges which challenges its autonomy.

“Therefore, there is hardly an arm of the Armed Forces that is not contributing to this effort. It is heart warming that it is yielding positive result. It is also glad to note that the Armed Forces and its sister services are working together in inter-agency cooperation, information gathering and sharing,” he said.

While commending the efforts of the offices and men of the force, he stressed that the Air Force was committed towards ensuring that the activities of the evil men are curtailed to the barest minimum.

The highlight of the regimental dinner was the ritual toast to  the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Goodluck Jonathan,  and as was the ritual, the lights were put off first before the toast.

NIGERIA: Operator Blames Helicopter Recall on Overzealous Controllers – Oshiomhole

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 12 Second

OAS Helicopters, the company which manages the controversial helicopter that was meant to fly the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole,  but  was denied clearance by the Nigeria Airspace Management Authority (NAMA) on Friday has attributed the incident to the overzealousness of the controllers who wrongly ordered the pilot to return the helicopter to the airport in Benin when it was meant to land at the Government House,Benin, where it used to land in the past without resort to the airport.

The governor was supposed to travel to Awka, the Anambra State capital,  to attend the burial of Senator Ben Obi’s wife, Colette, but the trip was terminated as the controllers at the Benin airport recalled the helicopter and delayed it for about two hours.

Informed source from OAS Helicopters told THISDAY Saturday that the aircraft did not go or intend to go to Benin Airport initially, but Nigeria Airspace Management (NAMA) control tower ordered it to fly to the airport.

The source explained that helicopter pilot is not required to stop at every airport it flies past to pay for charges and as helicopter, it could operate to its destination without landing at any airport and later pay charges for radio communication service which NAMA rendered to it.

“You are not required to stop and pay at every airport on your route of flight, which explains the argument between the pilot and the tower as to why he should fly to the airport. If the aircraft had landed at Benin airport initially, it would never have been cleared to take off in the first place without the necessary payments. The aircraft flew to the government house to pick the Governor and continue to Anambra. In a case like that you are only required to maintain communication with the control tower in route or the airspace of your vicinity, in this case Benin tower. And from what we have heard so far the pilot was on radio contact with Benin Tower.

“In such case, radio communication fee are usually mailed to the operator at the end of every month, and that’s what the pilot referred to when he said ‘we usually pay later.’ There is nothing anywhere that says you must stop at every airport in your route and file flight plan or pay charges except if you land in that facility. So, filing of flight plan in this case became necessary once the aircraft was made to land at the airport, which it never intended.”

On whether the action was politically motivated, the source said: “About the political witch hunt suggestion; I don’t really see that here. If anybody instructed the tower to do so, the aircraft would never have been allowed to depart Lagos in the first place.

Or when the pilot informed the tower about his intention to land at the government house, they would have denied him the request.

“Since the tower controller acknowledged his landing at the government house and even went further to permit a start-up to allow him airborne out of the government house and later, when already airborne, requested him to fly back to the airport, it seems to me like a case of over zealousness on the part of the controller; an afterthought towards the enforcement of manifest submission emphasised in the new policy. But I think that anyone who want to emphasis such policy to a point where a state governor is made to come to the airport to declare himself in a local flight would have a Herculean task.”

Meanwhile, NAMA has denied that it grounded the helicopter; rather, it was delayed.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos, NAMA’s Public Affairs Manager, Supo Atobatele said the flight was only delayed as a result of its Korean pilot’s failure to produce flight plan and passenger manifest as prescribed by law.

He explained that the agency acted professionally in their responsibility in ensuring that the AOS Helicopter Pilot files his flight plan, before lifting from Benin to Awka.

Udoh, noted that the safety and security related issues raised by NAMA Air Traffic Controllers viz-avis, filling of a flight plan and passenger manifest had no political undertones at all, but purely an aviation matter bothering on rules and regulations.

He emphasised that NAMA as a matter of rules need to know where the aircraft was going and how many people were on board, stressing that NAMA is by statue covered by legislation to demand for the flight plan which the pilot or his employer failed to comply with.

“This is a global acceptable procedure for a pilot to do before getting a startup. When this is not done, there will be delays, while perfecting your documents at the point of departure. It was a minor issue that should not be given any political coloration as being portrayed now, NAMA is never political in discharging her duties.”

NIGERIA: Taxi Driver Stabs Wife to Death, Commits Suicide

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 1 Second

A 47-year-old taxi driver, Jimoh Lateef,  Friday evening, committed suicide by hanging himself after stabbing his  ex-wife, Amudat Oluwafunmilayo,  to death two weeks after they were divorced by a court in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

The ex-couple were said to have been married for about 10 years and the marriage was blessed with five children before the relationship got sour recently.

While Olufumilayo, a trader at Iloro market in Akure and about 45 years of age hailed from Ijara Isin in Kwara State,  Jimoh who was formerly a baker hailed from Osogbo, Osun State.

THISDAY gathered that constant battering and threats by Jimoh to kill the woman resulted in the legal action which finally led to a divorce two weeks ago.

After they were divorced, the court ordered that court officials should accompany the woman to pack her belongings from her former husband’s home.

However, when the woman got home, her ex-husband begged her against the action and both of them became emotional which made the woman to pick only two of her dresses and left the house immediately.

The relationship between the two ex-lovebirds ended finally on Friday when one of the children of the deceased returned from school and met his mother in the pool of her own blood while his father was dangling from the ceiling of the roof of the house.

The alarm raised by the boy caused pandemonium in the entire Omoniyi quarters along Agbogbo area, off Akure-Owo- expressway, as many residents were attracted to the scene. The chairman of the landlord association of Omoniyi quarters, Mr. Ojo Oluwatayo,  reported the case to Divisional Police station in Ijapo area of Akure.

The report made the Divisional Police Officer ( DPO),  Jane Mbanefo,   to move into action with his men.

Mbanefo said the lives of the ex-couple would have been saved if the neighbours had called the police when they heard the man and the woman quarrelling.

She therefore urged the public to assist the police by reporting such cases to assist the police in discharging their duties promptly.

However, when the remains of the deceased were brought to the police station, the DPO said there was no case as the family of the late husband had pleaded that the bodies should be taken for burial according to Islamic injunction.

NOLLYWOOD: Please Let Go The Matter For The Sake Of Our Children”, Emeka Recounted

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 15 Second

Popular Nollywood actor, Emeka Ike who happened to be at the centre of the crisis that polarised the Actors Guild of Nigeria, AGN about three years ago, has opened up on why he decided to allow peace to reign in the guild, saying that it was his wife who made it possible.

It would be recalled that Emeka dragged the Board of Trustees of AGN to court about three years ago to challenge the leadership of Segun Arinze as president of the guild. He prayed that the court should declare an election that brought him into office null and void.

While the case lingered in court, the guild did not know any peace as Emeka vowed to sanitise the actors’ body at all cost.

But surprisingly, embattled Emeka Ike suddenly withdrew into his shell after the election of Ms Ibinabo Fiberesima as the first president of the guild. And many industry watchers have been wondering what might have been responsible for the actor’s decision to sheathe his sword.

But Emeka has this explanation to offer to whosoever cares to listen; “My wife pleaded with me that for the sake of our children, I should forget about the AGN palaver. She said to me that those whom I’m fighting for are not even recognising what I’m doing for them. My husband, please let go the matter for the sake of our children”, Emeka recounted while in a chat with HVP, recently.
