NIGERIA: I’m writing a book about my life – Julius Agwu

0 0
Read Time:7 Minute, 12 Second

With arms confidently placed on his desk, right inside his Surulere office, popular Comedian, Julius Agwu, who is one of the most successful comic acts in the country, recounts his life, forty years down the line.

He also spoke about his plan to celebrate his fortieth birthday, his book, new single, new TV show and family.

Excerpts:

This is a new year, what have you been up to?

This is a new year, 2013. For me, it’s two thousand and re-starting because this year, I’m going to be forty and it’s a new start for me. I was talking with the Deputy Governor of Cross River State and he said; forty is the old age of youth and it’s also the youth of old age.

We got talking about my fortieth and he was advising me and told me it’s worth celebrating. I was also speaking with Alex Oti, the Group Director of  Diamond Bank and he said; all the foolish things I do should end in March before my fortieth in April, because a fool at forty is a fool forever. This year also, I’m writing a book  about my journey so far.

What’s the title of the book?

I don’t want to reveal the title for now for fear of  Nollywood so they won’t name a movie after it.  But we are working on it and it’s being  edited by Tony Kan. The whole idea of it is that this is a fresh beginning for me and I call it 20-restarting, a year I want to re- strategize and re-position. As a matter of fact, I’m doing a song now and it’s titled Rejuvenate. So I want to rejuvenate the brand and myself.

So what are those things you used to do that you are going to stop doing @ 40?

Although I know them, I don’t want to reveal them because they are personal things.

Are you planning to celebrate your fortieth?

Of course I plan celebrating it. I want to use that medium to appreciate those who have helped me this far- my friends, brothers and sisters and everybody, especially God. It’s not  that I’m rich but I’m wealthy. I have a wealth of experience.

So what are those things lined up for that day?

I already mentioned that my book will be launched, which is the major thing. And there will be other performances by friends and colleagues.

I’m sure you plan celebrating it big. So are there any persons or corporate groups supporting you?

Nobody is supporting me yet with anything and it’s strictly by invitation.

So why did you decide to write a book?

Like I said, it’s about my journey so far, where I’m coming from, challenges and obstacles and the wheel of progress; where I am today. Like it or not, we are not Lagosians. There are people who come to Lagos with nylon bags and go back with briefcases, and others come with briefcases and go back with nylon bags.

But God has been very very nice to me. My career is such that they say entertainers’ life span is never long but the grace of God has brought me this far and I feel there’s a cause for celebration. I also want to celebrate my fans. Co incidentally, my fortieth falls on a Sunday. So part of it is that we’ll go to church in the morning, and then in the evening, we celebrate.

Aside that, I’ll also be launching my new TV show titled Jokes Apart.

For how long has it been in the pipeline?

For five years now. And that’s because TV production isn’t easy, so we have to put in our best. Aside from that, it’s something we want to concentrate on so we don’t get distracted by other things.

What are the side attraction that Jokes Apart will bring to viewers?

Let them just look out for the show when it starts and later, they can now judge our performances. We know we may make our mistakes but we hope to get it right from the start. For it to have been in the pipeline for five years, reason is the fear of failure  and this is my greatest fear. So I believe God to give me wisdom to make it a success.

So have you finished shooting?

We haven’t but we’ve already set up a studio. So, we’re waiting for the technical crew before we start shooting. It will unveil in April.

Are you going to have a live audience like Teju Babyface?

No, there won’t be a live audience. It’s studio based.

Do you have sponsors yet?

That’s one of the major challenges we have. At the moment, there’s no sponsor yet. But then we thank God that some of us have been able to sustain our brands.

What about the Abuja Festival Of Love?

Yes, it’s something I started two years ago in Abuja. Over the year, I’ve always spent Valentine and my birthdays with the less privilege because I see it as my own corporate social responsibility. So last two years, 2011, I decided that I wanted to start something about showing love to people who lack love.

That was why I started it but it was when the bombing issue was the order of the day in Abuja. So we did the  first edition in Abuja, the second was held in Lagos because of the unrest in Abuja. We actually got threats not to hold the event there and then, the Abuja people were too scared to gather.

So this year, I don’t want to hold it in Lagos because there are so many events already holding here, that’s why we are taking it back to Abuja. So for all our events, Aero Contractors has been very supportive, they are our official carrier, even on this event. So it’s a classic event for lovers. There will be couple’s games, karaoke games and part of the proceeds will be given back to charity.

Why is it that your shows don’t always have sponsors?

Okay, for this particular one, Festival of Love, it’s powered by OsmoServe Global, owned by a friend of mine called Scot Tommy, he just promised to do so but he hasn’t given anything yet but I’m hoping he’ll sponsor it. I’m also saying thank you to my colleagues who have decided to be part of it. I can’t pay them what they are worth but then, I pay them. As a matter of fact, I started paying a token of appreciation to my colleagues right from when we started Crack Ya Ribs as far back of 2001.

For music, we have Wizkid, Bunner Boy and Chidnma. For comedy, we have Bovi, Apororo, Daniel, based in Port-Harcourt, Chugo, and others. There’s going to be  a red carpet by 5pm and then cocktail.

Being into entertainment isn’t all about money but passion, and that’s why I don’t mind funding my shows alone. My joy is that what I do give me satisfaction.

Aside organizing your own shows, do you still accept invites to perform on other colleagues’ shows?

Yes I do. I also encourage other up-comers to participate.

Like  who and who are the up-comers you are supporting at the moment?

There are quite many. We have Daniel ‘D’ Humorous based in Port-Harcourt, Senator based in Jos, Fony Bone, Osama, all these people I’ve taken to London and America; they’ve been around the world courtesy of the platform I provide.

So how does it  feel to be 40 because you don’t look it?

Like I said, I was dancing Azonto and my wife said I shouldn’t be dancing to such at my age. So I told her that even at 80, I’ll still be dancing to songs in vogue. Age is a function of the mind.

AFCON 2013: Moses, Emenike miss Nigeria training session

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 20 Second

Injured Nigeria strikers Victor Moses and Emmanuel Emenike did not practice on Friday and coach Stephen Keshi likely won't know whether they can play in Sunday's African Cup final until just before the game.

Nigeria officials said tests were conducted on both players but did not give any information about the results. Emenike was not on the field Friday and Moses only walked around the pitch as his teammates trained.

Injury threat

Moses, the Chelsea forward who set up two goals in Nigeria's 4-1 win in the semifinals, twisted his left ankle in the second half, while Spartak Moscow's Emenike is nursing a muscle injury also sustained in the semifinal against Mali. He scored his fourth goal of the tournament in that game and is one of the tournament's top strikers.

Nigeria is bidding for its first title since 1994. The Super Eagles hadn't made it to the final since 2000.

Although Nigeria spokesman Ben Alaiya said both players should be fine to play on Sunday at Soccer City, Keshi said he will likely have to wait until closer to the game to know whether they'll be fit.

-We'll see tomorrow (Saturday) what it looks like, we will wait and see, said Keshi, the team captain in 1994.

After game against Mali

Moses was limping badly when the team boarded a plane from Durban to Johannesburg on Thursday, a day after the team's win over Mali. He appeared in better shape on Friday and was walking normally, but still didn't join his teammates on the field in the first 15 minutes in which the media had access to the training session in Johannesburg.

Keshi said before the practice session that the plan was for Moses just to jog a little bit.

Moses again didn't want to talk to reporters about the injury that forced him to be replaced in the 53rd minute in Durban.

-It's getting better, Moses said briefly.

Waiting on the doctors

Emenike wasn't even on the bus that took his teammates to the training session on Friday.

-They did an MRI this afternoon, the doctors will give us the information, I'll be informed, I'm waiting for the doctor to give me a feedback, Keshi said.

Keshi didn't want to talk about possible replacements for the regular starting strikers who have been key for the team in the tournament so far.

Nigeria is trying to win its third African Cup title, while surprising Burkina Faso, which eliminated Ghana in the semifinals, will be looking to lift the trophy for the first time.

Group warns of election violence in Kenya

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 5 Second

The risk of political violence in Kenya is “perilously high” ahead of next month’s election, the first since bloody post-poll violence five years ago, Human Rights Watch (HRW) warned Friday.

Local communities “are arming themselves” fearing possible violence ahead of the presidential, parliamentary and local elections on March 4, HRW said, citing reports from local non-governmental organisations.

“The underlying causes of past election-related violence remain in place, and in some parts of the country the tensions have escalated,” the New York-based rights group said in a report.

“The risk of violence and human rights violations remains perilously high,” it added, blaming a failure to implement promised reforms, as well as “abusive or discriminatory conduct” of officials.

The 2007-8 violence shattered Kenya’s image as a beacon of stability in east Africa, when what began as political riots quickly turned into ethnic violence that killed some 1,200 people and displaced 600,000 others.

“Violence is not inevitable, but the warning signs are too bright to ignore,” HRW’s Daniel Bekele said.

“The near total impunity for the murders, rapes, and forced displacement in 2007-2008 has left the people who committed those crimes free to commit them again.”

At least 477 people were killed and over 118,000 fled their homes due to ethnic violence last year, HRW added, noting that “many of these incidents have been linked to pre-election manoeuvring as local politicians mobilise support.”

Police or other authorities have “repeatedly failed” to prevent the violence or hold those responsible to account, the report added, which is based on over 225 interviews in flashpoint regions across Kenya.

“The victims of violence feel that justice has passed them by, and the people who caused the violence feel protected from the law,” Bekele said. “This is a dangerous cocktail for the approaching elections.”

Tensions have been stoked by the looming trial at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for key presidential candidate Uhuru Kenyatta for his alleged role in orchestrating murder, rape and violence after 2007 polls.

The trial, set to begin on April 11, could clash with a presidential run-off vote due within a month if — as many expect — no candidate wins an outright majority in the first round.

Kenya, whose army is still fighting in Somalia after invading in 2011, has also suffered a spate of grenade attacks and shootings, often blamed on Somalia’s Al-Qaeda linked Shebab or homegrown Islamist supporters.

Tensions on the coast also are high, where police have cracked down on Islamist groups as well as a separatists wanting to split the popular tourist region from the rest of Kenya.

Along with the presidential vote, parliamentary, gubernatorial, senatorial and local council elections will take place on the same day, a massive logistical undertaking which could see political tensions at the most local level.

Many fear a new constitution providing elections for the new posts of governors and senators, has increased the risk of violence at local levels, with ethnic rivalries exacerbated by political jostling for power.

Johnnie Carson, the top US diplomat for Africa, on Thursday warned Kenyans that “choices have consequences”, in an apparent caution over the possible victory of Kenyatta and his running mate William Ruto, also facing trial at the ICC.

“We live in an interconnected world and people should be thoughtful about the impact their choices have on their nation, economy, region and the world in which they live,” he told reporters, without naming any names.

Kano Police declares three wanted over Emir’s assassination bid

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 43 Second

The Police Command in Kano State, has declared three persons wanted in connection with the recent attempt to assassinate the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, and series of armed robbery operations in the state.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Ibrahim Idris, made the announcement while briefing newsmen at the command’s headquarters in Kano on Thursday.

He gave the names of the wanted persons as Na Allah, a shopkeeper at Sabon Gari Market implicated in the attack on the Emir and Babangida Salihu of Sauna Kawaji, a Jigawa State indigene, suspected of being the gang leader of armed robbers and an associate of Na Allah.

The third person, Adamu Safiyanu, also known as Adamsy of Kafur in Katsina State, was declared wanted in connection with the recovery of arms, ammunition and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) abandoned at Sauna Kawaji quarters.

The commissioner said that following a distress call, his men arrested one Hashimu Ado of Rimin Kebe Quarters and Mohammed Auwal of Dutsinma in Katsina State for conspiring with three other suspects to rob a supermarket at Jogana.

The commissioner said however, that before the arrival of policemen at the scene, members of the community had already lynched one of the suspects simply identified as Zailani of Wudil Town in Kano State, while the other three suspects escaped.

He said that during investigation, the arrested suspects “confessed that Babangida Salihu was the one who gave them weapons and directed them to where and when to go.”

He said the police had recovered three AK-47 rifles, five magazines, 69 rounds of live ammunition and two mobile handsets.

In a separate raid, the commissioner said his men had recovered “a bag carefully secured containing six AK-47 rifles, two assault rifles, a pistol, two IEDs, 723 of 5.6 live ammunitions and 152 of 7.6 live ammunition.”

Asked about investigation on the attack on the Emir, Idris said that more than four persons had been arrested, assuring that the details would soon be made public.

Afcon: Ref admits mistake, Pitroipa set to play in final

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 21 Second

Burkina Faso’s star striker Jonathan Pitroipa, who picked up a red card in Wednesday’s semi-final, is set to play in Sunday’s Africa Cup of Nations final after all.

For Pitroipa to be able to take part the referee in Wednesday’s game had to admit he had made a mistake in booking the player for a second time for diving, something Tunisian Slim Jdidi has now done, CAf president Issa Hayatou said.

“Everyone realised that this referee did not officiate well,” Hayatou announced here on Friday.

“They’ve told me the referee has sent a letter saying he got it wrong.

“From this moment, the CAF executive committee will pass on the matter to the disciplinary commission, who will announce their decision today (Friday).

“The referee admitted his error in his report given to the (CAF) secretary general (Hicham El Amrani) — he recognised that he had got it wrong.”

Jdidi’s admission that he had erred paves the way for the red card to be rescinded and for Pitroipa to take his place in the Burkina Faso side to face Nigeria at Soccer City on Sunday.

Pitroipa produced the only goal in the 1-0 extra-time quarter-final win over Togo.

He has helped lighten the blow of the Burkinabe losing their best striker Alain Traore to injury.

Jdidi, who has been suspended for his poor performance in Wednesday’s game, sent off the Rennes forward in the 117th minute of the game that Burkina won on penalties against Ghana.

Elderly Russian man set’s self ablaze in protest

0 0
Read Time:47 Second

An elderly Russian man set himself on fire for a few seconds on Moscow’s Red Square outside President Vladimir Putin’s offices in the Kremlin, Interfax quoted a law enforcement source as saying on Friday.

“An elderly man tried to set himself on fire,” the news agency quoted the source as saying.

“The flames were going for three or four seconds. Then a law enforcement official arrived at the scene and put them out.”

The source said the man, whose age was not specified, did not suffer severe injuries and walked on his own to the ambulance that had rushed to the scene.

It was not immediately clear if he had made any political statements before setting himself on fire.

The vast Kremlin complex houses the administration and offices of Putin, who in May assumed his third term in office in the face of first major protests against his rule.

Football glory unites Nigeria in pride — at least for now

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 7 Second

Nigeria’s sensational run to the final of the African Cup of Nations has united the often divided country in football pride and given a nation that has grown weary with bad news a reason to celebrate.

With Africa’s largest population and massive oil wealth, many see Nigeria as a natural powerhouse held back by corruption and division, but some football fans say that reputation could be improved with a win on Sunday.

After shocking star-laden Ivory Coast in the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals and thrashing Mali in the semi-finals, Nigeria will face Burkina Faso for a chance to win its first continental title since 1994.

“We are going to show what kind of country we are on Sunday… you’ll see,” said Kola Obe, standing on the sidewalk at a busy intersection in the Lagos Island area of Nigeria’s economic capital.

“Nigeria is a nation to watch and we are coming up and we are going to get there,” insisted the 45-year-old father of two. A win against Burkina Faso, he added, “is going to improve our image.”

Obe and others on Lagos Island, one of the oldest areas of the city, conceded that outsiders often view Nigeria as a case of unfulfilled promise, including when it comes to sport.

The country boasts a population of roughly 160 million people and the continent’s second biggest economy, not to mention hordes of passionate football fans: so the 19-year AFCON title gap has been frustrating for many.

Nigeria failed to even qualify for last year’s AFCON, and the team’s performance in the 2010 World Cup was so dismal that President Goodluck Jonathan sought to ban the team — a move he later rescinded.

The start of this year’s Nation’s Cup initially brought back some of the old cynicism, as Nigeria did not look to be playing as champions in the group stages.

Nigerians are not known for holding their tongues, and coach Stephen Keshi took exception to the criticism. Ahead of the quarterfinal he said that “it’s a great shame that a nation doesn’t have confidence in its sons, the players.”

The country has since rallied behind Keshi, who captained the team that last won Nigeria the Nations Cup in 1994, along with his mix of experienced stars and local-based players.

In the team’s thrilling win over favourites Ivory Coast, the show stealer was not a Premier League star like Victor Moses or John Obi Mikel, both of Chelsea, but Sunday Mba, who plays in the Nigerian league and scored the winning goal.

“I want to kiss him!” Keshi said of Mba after that match. “Everyone one of my boys is a hero, a Hollywood star, but it just happened that a home-based player, Sunday, scored a beautiful, beautiful goal.”

No local networks secured the rights to broadcast the tournament, so Nigerians have flocked to outdoor bars with satellite TVs to watch the matches, breaking out into wild celebrations with each victory.

“I must confess, since 1994 until yesterday, (the national) Super Eagles have been a shadow of itself, but the activities of yesterday really impressed me,” said Godfrey Idahosa, 27, recalling Wednesday’s win over Mali.

The daily papers here are filled with reports of the nation’s troubles, notably a corrupt, often inept government and waves of violence partly linked to religious and ethnic divisions in a country with a mostly Christian south and mainly Muslim north.

Moses, the national team star and Chelsea player, suffered a personal tragedy connected to this divide when, at age 11, his parents were killed in religious riots in Kaduna, still a flashpoint city a decade later.

As for Obi Mikel, his father was abducted in what was suspected to have been a ransom kidnapping in Nigeria in 2011 before being freed some 10 days later in a police raid.

But football transcends the country’s divisions, several Super Eagles fans argued, adding that come kick-off on Sunday, people across the country will be united and cheering for the same result.

“In Nigeria, when football is involved all barriers crumble,” said Musa Yakubu, a taxi driver in Kano, the country’s second city and largest in the north.

He recalled Nigeria’s stunning football gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, a victory which sent people of both faiths pouring into a busy neighbourhood to celebrate side by side.

Speaking in Lagos, a city of some 15 million people, Obe offered a similar sentiment.

“Of course we have differences, we have Christian, we have Muslims,” he said. “But when it comes to sport, especially soccer, we unite.”
