A former Golden Eaglets coach, Henry Nwosu, has urged the current manager of the team to be focused as he strives for a good outing at the Africa U-17 championship in Morocco.

Nwosu told the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Lagos that coach Manu Garba, should not relent in his effort at making the country proud at the championship.

He said, “The team should ensure that they perform well at the upcoming championship and come out tops.”

He enjoined the coach to make use of capable players who would deliver the gold medal to the country, stressing that only the willing ones should be given a chance. He said the Eaglets must ensure that they perform well in order to win the event. Nwosu added that the team must also strive to go the extra mile by striving to overcome their counterparts, particularly by studying their style of play.

“Preparation is not limited to training alone but you should be given opportunities of watching tapes of matches involving opposing teams, in order to master their patterns of play.’’

Nigeria won the maiden U-16 World Cup in 1985, then known as the JVC U-16, the FIFA U-17 in 1993 and the 2007 edition. The team also won the African U-17 Championship in 2001 and 2007 and were runners-up in 1995. The Moroccan championship has been scheduled to hold from April 13 – April 27.

Messi admits Argentina poor form

Read Time:1 Minute, 0 Second

Lionel Messi has confessed that he wishes he was as successful with Argentina as he has been with Barcelona.

The attacker has often been accused of caring more about the fortunes of his club side than his national team, but the 25-year-old superstar said he wants nothing more than for his South American nation to succeed under his captaincy.

“I wish we could win as many titles as we can in Barcelona and qualify for the World Cup with Argentina,” the 25-year-old told Ole.

“I’ve had many nice moments with the national team and others that were not so good. Throughout this last year, we have enjoyed things and got together. I always expect to improve in everything, and that includes my career.”

The three-time Ballon d’Or  winner also extended his best wishes to Tito Vilanova after the Barca coach underwent surgery following a cancer relapse last month.

“Tito lives together with us (in Barcelona) and for him I give my best wishes that his health gets better,” Messi added. “Outside of work, I always ask for health, which is the most important thing.”

Azarenka wins, Stephens faces Serena

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 48 Second

Top-ranked Victoria Azarenka opened her 2013 season with a 6-3, 6-3 win on Wednesday over Sabine Lisicki to join No. 3 Serena Williams and fourth-seeded Angelique Kerber in the Brisbane International quarterfinals.

American Sloane Stephens had a 6-3, 6-4 win over Sweden’s Sofia Arvidsson to set up a quarterfinal against Williams. She’ll face a childhood hero.

‘’Obviously, she’s been a really great influence in my tennis,’’ the 19-year-old Stephens said. ‘’I’m excited to play her and get on the court with her. I think it’ll be fun.’’

Williams said she has been following Stephens’ career and was ‘’a fan’’ of her young Fed Cup teammate’s style.

In her first tournament back since being sidelined by an abdominal injury following the U.S. Open, Stephens isn’t awed by the prospect of taking on the 15-time Grand Slam winner.

‘’Obviously, I always was like, ‘Oh, my God. I love her to death. She’s amazing, whatever,’’’ Stephens recalled of early meetings with Williams. ‘’Now she’s like an actual person and I’m like, ‘Oh, hi. How is it going?’ She’s not like a hero anymore. She’s just a friend.

“Even if I go out there and lose, just bomb it, I don’t win a game, at least if I’m able to focus on myself and do what’s right for me, then it’s not a loss.’’

Kerber recovered from 5-2 down in the deciding tiebreaker to beat Puerto Rican qualifier Monica Puig, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7).

Azarenka won her first major at the Australian Open last year during a 26-match winning streak to start the season and spent most of 2012 atop the women’s rankings.

Nigeria: School sports will change athletics – Obajimi

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 10 Second

A board member of the Athletic Federation of Nigeria on Wednesday called for the revival of school sports as a way of stimulating interest in athletics in the country.

Obajimi told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos on telephone that the base on which to breed those to replace the elite athletes had weakened over time.

“We do not have a foundation or programmes where younger athletes can be groomed to replace the ageing elite athletes which have led to some overbearing pressure on the elite athletes.

“We cannot forget the schools in the development of sports in the country, especially athletics, because many of us were discovered from the schools. This was made possible because there were many competitions available for us to participate in as students, such as inter-school competitions and inter-house sports,” she said.

Obajimi added that the focus on school sports would not only assist in identifying talents at a younger age but create avenues for coaches remain abreast with new developments in the sport.

She said, “If sports are revived in schools, it will provide opportunities for qualified coaches to be assigned or employed by such schools and in the process, facilitate the education of coaches. Another deficiency of athletics in the country is that our coaches are not adequately educated. Many of them are not up to date,” she said.

Nigeria hold star-studded Catalonia to draw

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 36 Second

The Super Eagles of Nigeria drew 1-1 with Catalonia side that included seven Barcelona players on Wednesday at the Espanyol Stadium as the team began preparation for the 2013 Africa Nations Cup with a decent performance.

The hosts though started brightly with an early goal from Sergio Gonzalez through a 3rd minute penalty after Fengor Ogude handled the ball in the box and would have doubled the lead if Bojan Krkic had had his way in the Eagles area just minutes later. Nigeria scored the equaliser in the 55th minute through US-based Bright Dike.

After a slow start, Nigeria, with seven home-based players in the starting line up, grew in confidence as they settled back into the game, gradually creating chances and getting through with their passes.

Brown Ideye and Dike’s partnership upfront did not work perfectly as both players often ran into themselves.

The Catalonia side had their own form of disappointment when goal scorer Gonzalez was injured and replaced by Alvaro Vazquez in the 12th minute. Barcelona captain Carlos Puyol was also injured and replaced later in the game. With Barcelona players dominating the squad, it was not surprising that Xavi Hernandez, Puyol and Gerard Pique were in firm control. Their domination was overwhelming in the first half but they failed to convert the advantage into goals.

With eight attempts at goal to Nigeria’s one in the first half, the statistic changed in the second half as Nigeria challenged for possession and put pressure on the hosts defence. It paid off when Dike got a pass from Onazi Ogenyi and beat the defence line to fire pass goalkeeper Kiko Casilas for the equaliser.

Chances were coming for the Eagles as the Catalan side tired out but substitute Ike Uche twice failed to score.

Boja won the Most Valuable Player award but Nigeria was awarded a trophy for their good performance in the game.

Nigeria: Osaze linked to Newcastle move

0 0
Read Time:49 Second

Newcastle United are reportedly interested in bringing West Bromwich striker Osaze Odemwingie to St James’ Park.

The Sun reported on Wednesday that Newcastle manager Alan Pardew is keen on the frontman as a replacement for Demba Ba who is likely to join Chelsea.

The tabloid reported: “Talks were on-going last night and Toon boss Pardew is hoping to land Odemwingie for £3m.

“The Nigerian, 31, has 18 months left on his deal and wants to quit Albion.

“He almost moved to the cash-rich Qatari League last summer but the Baggies were unable to strike a deal.

“Albion chiefs are keen to do business now rather than see his value plummet as he nears the end of his contract.”

But a Birmingham Mail source close to Newcastle poured cold water on the news.

He tweeted : “No truth in this morning’s reports that #wba and Newcastle are in talks over potential Odemwingie move”

Mourinho will stay – Ronaldo

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 11 Second

The Portuguese boss has seen his future at the club shrouded in doubt of late, with a string of controversial decisions and a 16-point gap to Liga leaders Barcelona leaving his position weakened with los Blancos.

However, Ronaldo feels his compatriot is not about to quit Santiago Bernabeu, and insists he is the right man to lead the club forward.

When asked whether he thought Jose Mourinho would leave, he told reporters at a press conference: “I do not know. It depends on his situation and the club. I would love him to stay because he is the right coach. He is a top coach for a top club. I think he is going to stay but everyone chooses their future.”

Mourinho came under fire recently following his decision to drop club captain Iker Casillas for the defeat to Malaga, but Ronaldo the coach’s decision is final.

“For me, in football, nothing surprises me,” he continued. “His (Casillas’) replacement was a technical decision that we must respect. Here the coach is the boss and he makes decisions for the benefit of the group.”

Ronaldo’s own future has been the subject of speculation lately, with the player seemingly embroiled in a dispute over the extension of his contract, but the 27-year-old insists he is happy at the club and focused on winning trophies.

Read Time:41 Second

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas is still interested in Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Willian and Internacional forward Leandro Damiao.

The pair, who both featured for Brazil at international level, were linked with Spurs during the summer and Portuguese boss Villas-Boas has reinstated his admiration for the duo.

Speaking about Willian he told Lancenet: “We contacted Willian and he is one of the players in which we had an interest. I like his style but we could not reach a deal with Shakhtar in the summer.

“Shakhtar are a tough club to negotiate with; they don’t need the money, they can keep their players.”

Villas-Boas also had high praise for Damiao, who was one of the key players in the Brazilian team that won a Silver medal at the 2012 Olympics.

Nigeria:Rabiu Ibrahim joins Kilmarnock on two-year deal

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 21 Second

Scottish Premier League side Kilmarnock have completed the signing of Super Eagles midfielder Rabiu Ibrahim from league leaders, Celtic, on a permanent basis.

The 21-year-old has agreed a two-year contract with the Rugby Park club, which are currently sixth in the SPL log, after Celtic allowed the player to move on in search of regular first-team football.

Ibrahim had an offer from Russia and was also believed to be a loan target for other Scottish sides.

“He’s signed a two year deal with us,” Kilmarnock manager Kenny Shiels told STV.

“I believe it’s quite a coup for Kilmarnock and we are a good fit for him.

“Rabiu had an offer from a club in Russia but he and his advisors thought it would be better for his career development to stay in Scotland and they were equally as keen as we were for the deal to go through.

“We signed him on a free transfer.”

The former Golden Eaglets star will not join up with his new teammates immediately as he is currently with the Nigeria national team preparing for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

“He’s away with the Nigeria squad for the AFCON at the moment,” Shiels said.

“I believe January 9 is the deadline for them to name their final squad. I would quite like him to be named in the squad for his confidence.

“If he is named then as soon as they go out of the competition, he will join up with us.”
