Your Country has got a bad name here!

Read Time:3 Minute, 33 Second

After seven hectic hours on a flawless road, you could imagine how tired I was when I checked into Holiday Inn at 99 Leyds Street,by Oliver Thambo Drive.

Formalities started with production of my International Passport when the receptionist, a white lady, looked and asked; “Are you a Nigerian?”.

Proud that she could be one of those who are crazy over Nigerians, I said yes. She turned her face and continued to fill in my details in her register. “You’ve got a terrible name in this country”. It was like a thunderbolt. Apparently aware of my fury, she changed gear and tried to make it lighter. “Anyway, we all have terrible names”.

Trust me. I would not allow her walk away easily by insulting me in the market place and coming to apologize in private. She stretched her hand for her money when I asked why she said that Nigerians have bad reputation? “No, you guys are known for the wrong reasons.

That is the truth. If the police arrest people for various offences, Nigerians surely must be there. It’s a bad thing down here”, she said as a matter of facts and stuffed my money in her wallet and took me to my room.

She had deflated my ego and I was pained and all my showmanship was gone. I had dressed simple and thought I was good after re-examining myself on the mirror from Nelspruit. The women of Mbombela were in tears when I waived goodbye. They love Nigerians for their energy and their money.

One said that all Nigerians are millionaires. That was better than one undressing me with unkind words in another region. I checked into the room and did a quick check and discovered that there was no air-conditioner in my room but electric heater. “You do not need that now because it would be terribly cold later”, the receptionist offered. Not for me.

“Have you been to Nigeria before?”, I asked. Luckily, she shook her head. “I’m a Nigerian and I am used to the cold. I need the A/c with this searing heat.

In my country, even the smallest of Guest houses have heaters and A/c in all the rooms at an affordable cost. I cant pay through my nose and not have one in my room”. “Is Nigeria beautiful?”, she asked falling into my trap.

“OMG! You need to get to Nigeria to know that you have been living in hell. Why do you think that we are the most populated black nation in the World? Do you know that Nigeria is the heartbeat of all black race?

Do you know that we are among the world’s largest oil-producing countries? I shook my hand revealing my black pearl wrist watch that Onochie Anibeze bought for me in one of his trips round the world. It worked.

“That’s a good wrist watch you are wearing”, she remarked. I grew taller and adjusted my trouser tucking my shirt inside the trouser. She excused me and dashed off to bring another key to another room. It was better. A beautifully decorated bed stared me in the face.

She powered the a/c and showed me a giant refrigerator that could accommodate me if I decide to step inside. It was a king-size room with all the splendor in it. “I’m happy you love it.

You need to give me $50 more. It is $150 a night”, she said. I’ve talked myself into trouble”, I said to myself. I cant pretend to be what I am not. My Editor approved a $50 per night accommodation for me. My phone rang and brought relief to me.

After about two minutes on the phone, I told her that it was our chef de mission. He said that nobody should stay alone in the room. They had made reservation for me elsewhere.

She winked and called a porter to help me out with my luggage. I breathed heavily once out and thanked God for saving me.

FA charge Ferguson over linesman complaint

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 26 Second

The Football Association on Tuesday charged Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson after he criticised the performance of an assistant referee in a game at Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.

“The FA has today (Tuesday 29 January) charged Sir Alex Ferguson in relation to post-match media comments made following Manchester United’s game at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday 20 January 2013,” said an FA statement.

“It is alleged the Manchester United manager breached FA Rule E3 in that he implied that the match official was motivated by bias.

“Ferguson has until 4pm (1600GMT) on Friday 1 February 2013 to respond to the charge.”

Ferguson hit out at assistant referee Simon Beck for failing to award United a penalty after an apparent foul on Wayne Rooney by Spurs defender Steven Caulker during the 1-1 draw between the sides.

The United manager recalled that Beck had previously failed to spot that Didier Drogba was in an offside position when he scored a crucial winning goal for Chelsea in a game at Old Trafford in April 2010.

Speaking last Friday, Ferguson had defended his right to criticise match officials and suggested that English football’s governing body had singled him out for punishment.

“We are high-profile and the profile of me is such that the FA naturally panic as soon as the press criticise them,” he said.

“I think that is what you will find. That is why they have sent me a letter.

“Whether I think it is unfair or not doesn’t matter to them really at this point. I just think it is more about me than what I have said.”

Experts say Shea butter can treat skin problem

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 52 Second

Some dermatologists on Monday in Lagos, said Shea butter was a possible cure for stretch marks and other skin problems.

They said in separate interviews that Shea butter could also be used to improve skin conditions.

Dr Ayesha Akinkugbe, Consultant Dermatologist and Genito-urinary Physician, Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH), Idi-Araba, Lagos, said Shea butter was a cream-colored fatty substance made from the nuts of Karite nut trees.

Akinkugbe said most creams were extracted from the natural raw Shea butter, adding that unrefined one was the best kind of skin cream.

She said that Karite trees or Shea trees, were not cultivated, but grown only in the wild, and could take up to 50 years to mature.

“Shea butter is particularly effective moisturiser because it contains so many fatty acids which are needed to retain skin moisture and elasticity.

“The high fatty acid content in it also makes it a major additive to soap, shampoos, anti-aging creams, cosmetics, lotions and massage oil.

“Its soft, butter-like texture melts readily into the skin and helps protect the skin from harmful Utra-Violet (UV) or sun rays,” she said.

Another dermatologist, Dr Eunice Uzor, said that raw Shea butter could protect the skin from both the environmental and free-radical damages.

Uzor said the butter naturally contained vitamins A, E and F.

“Vitamin A and E which consist of anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties that balance and normalise the skin.

“Vitamin F consists of essential fatty acids which work to soften and revitalise dry skin.

“It can be used as an all-natural hair conditioner, moisturiser and make-up remover or as a treatment for all skin problems.

“Shea butter may also help to treat skin problems such as stretch marks, minor scars, sores, chapped hands and lips, sunburn, eczema, rashes and so on,” she said.

Uzor said that it could also diminish wrinkles by moisturising the skin and promoting cell renewal.

She said that due to high demand, many producers added other ingredients to cut cost and it could alter the benefits.

Uzor, however, advised people to consult the physicians or dermatologists about serious or persistent skin problems for proper treatment.

Henry Okah: MEND disowns threat to crumble Nigeria

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 52 Second

THE Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger-Delta, MEND, Monday, disowned, the threat, last week, purportedly by the group, to tear apart Nigeria over the conviction of Henry Okah for terrorism in South Africa.

One Comrade Azizi, in a statement, last Wednesday, supposedly on behalf of MEND, said the group would collapse the country, adding that massive earthquake would be triggered with nuclear warheads to destroy oil wells, oil pipelines and refineries.

However, MEND’s spokesman, Jomo Gbomo, in an electronic mail rebutting the claim said,  The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) wishes to advise Nigerians and the media to disregard the pathetic attempt at propaganda by a so-called Comrade Azizi and his statements,  which are not authentic and statements emanating from  MEND.”

His words, “As claimed by this Comrade Azizi, the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) would like to clarify the following:”

Mr Henry Okah is NOT and has never been viewed as the leader or founder of MEND,  but rather known as a sympathiser and supporter of our cause

Our fighters are freedom fighters who are fighting for justice, the emancipation of the Niger Delta and control of our God- given resources and not assassins,  as stated by this so-called Comrade Azizi

Our struggle is NOT and has never been about the disintegration of Nigeria or a North and South fight as stated by this so-called Comrade Azizi

“With regards to the trial, judgement and sentencing of Henry Okah and other Niger- Delta indigenes, we will issue a full formal statement in due course stating our views and plans for the future,” the statement added.

He said, “The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) would once again strongly urge Nigerians and the media to disregard any statement from this person.”

In a controversial statement with  reference number, MEND/QTD/82MP/2013, dated January 23, entitled, “Conviction of our leader and founder, Mr. Henry Okah”, Comrade Azizi said, “  We witnessed ourselves firsthand the conviction of our dear leader yesterday the 21st of January 2013 by the South African Supreme Court on all the 13th count charges which as we all know has to do with ASO ROCK politic on a man simply because he refused to be bought over.”

“Before yesterday’s ruling, we had high regards for the South African judiciary but not now as we were wrong on our previous assessment nevertheless, people pays for mistakes committed by others so we the High Command of MEND have an advice for the South African people, which is TELL YOUR GOVERNMENT through your judiciary stay away with events that happened in Nigeria or else some South Africans will pay dearly for it.

“To the Nigerian military (The Joint Task Force (JTF) in the Niger Delta) don’t bother for now placing officers on alert, we will not bomb nor kill anybody for the time being, as we had communicated months back, we no long require IED or car bombs as we’ve gone pass that stage. Nigerians as a whole will feel our presence when we finally decide to carry out our targets which will not be restricted to the Niger Delta Region alone.

“We so much understand the job load of an image maker but I most point our here clearly that the JTF’s spokesman, Lt.-Col. Onyeama Nwachukwu will have much jobs to do in the region anytime soon for thinking we rely on the OLD COMMANDERS that sold out to take up arms on behalf of our leader, just don’t underrate our capabilities which will take the Nigerian Military another 10 years to catch.

“We are not on the same program with regional agitators in the north or elsewhere, we will not hide our faces, soon and very soon, Nigerians will get to see the structures (Diaspora and Home) as well as our new states, regional commanders and new National Leader, arresting and killing Henry Okah will change nothing.

“To the Nigerian Government, you have seen NOTHING, the disintegration of Nigeria will start through us and by us, we are well equipped for this task. We have details of all the family members of the Government (1999-2013) and our Diaspora Command will take care of that aspect, we will get to them, we will skin them and post their remains to your door steps as compensation to the Ode people, except our resources are handed over to us without conditions.

“All Federal, States and Local Government officials under the pay roll of the Government ( ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Director Generals, Directors etc ) should stay away from the Niger Delta, if found anywhere in the South South region, they will have themselves to blame and that is if they live to tell the tales.

“The Minister of the Niger Delta Ministry Mr. Orubebe Peter Godsday is hereby banished from Delta State and the region at large pending when he returns the money he stole which was meant for the Niger Delta Development Councils and also while with:

(a) Burutu Local Government Council, Delta State (1991-1993),
 (b) As second Member: Primary Education Board, Asaba, Delta State 2000-2003.
 (c) As the Special Adviser to James Ibori former Delta State Governor on Urban/Regional Planning between January 2004 and November 2005.

“This whole money belongs to the Niger Delta people and most be return or he should be ready to face the consequences along with your nuclear and immediate family members.

“To our natural resources, there will soon be a massive earthquake that will be trigged by our nuclear war head, this earthquake will destroy the entire oil wells, oil pipelines especially to Kaduna refinery, oil installations, oil rigs and what have you, when it happens, which we know will be very soon, the Government and those owners of these oil wells and installation will know it’s a different ball game.

“All oil companies, (foreign or local) should start parking up from the region as this might be the last warning, we really will not want civilians to be caught in between so please take this warning seriously.

“To our old breed Commanders, you can talk as much as you want just because you were bought over for a token but we wonder why the fight against your masters, the hurricane is almost there and it will sweep everything left.

“And finally to the South Africa companies: we made some promises before and now we are repeating same, LEAVE NIGERIA totally, there will be massive and aggressive campaign on all companies owned, operated and affiliated to the South African Citizens or their Government both in Nigeria, Western and Southern Africa respectively”, the statement added

Egypt military chief warns of collapse of state

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 52 Second

Egypt’s military chief warned on Tuesday that the political crisis sweeping the country could lead to the collapse of the state, as thousands defied curfews and the death toll from days of rioting rose to 52.

“The continuing conflict between political forces and their differences concerning the management of the country could lead to a collapse of the state and threaten future generations,” General Abdel Fattah al-Sissi, who is also defence minister, said on his Facebook page.

He further warned that the political, economic, social and security problems facing Egypt constitute “a threat to the country’s security and stability,” and vowed to defend vital infrastructure, including the Suez Canal.

Sissi’s warning comes as medics on Tuesday reported another three people killed in the violence sweeping Egypt, pushing to at least 52 the death toll from five days of clashes.

Two people died in fighting between protesters and security forces in the riot-hit canal city of Port Said, and one was shot dead in Cairo when protesters and police clashed near Tahrir Square, the capital’s iconic hub of protest.

On Sunday, President Mohamed Morsi imposed a month-long state of emergency and night-time curfews on Port Said, Ismailiya and Suez, the three provinces most affected by the rioting.

But witnesses said thousands of demonstrators flooded the streets of the three Suez Canal cities Monday night in defiance of the curfews.

The protesters chanted slogans against Islamist rule in Egypt, “Fall, fall the rule of the guide (of the Muslim Brotherhood), referring to Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood.

Egypt has already deployed troops to Port Said and Suez provinces, at each end of the canal that Sissi said the army would defend.

“The deployment of the army in Port Said and Suez aims to protect strategic infrastructure, especially the Suez Canal, which we will not allow to be harmed,” Sissi said.

– ‘Protests must be peaceful’–

But he said the army’s task was difficult.

It does “not want to confront Egyptian citizens who have a right to protest” but it “has to protect vital institutions.”

“That is why protests must be peaceful.”

With the unrest showing no signs of abating, Egypt’s Islamist-dominated Senate ratified on Monday a law granting the armed forces powers of arrest.

Opposition groups and disgruntled Egyptians accuse Morsi, the Muslim Brotherhood and other Islamists of monopolising power and say the revolution failed to reach its goals of social justice.

The violence first erupted on Thursday. It gained momentum on Friday, when protests marking the second anniversary of the start of the uprising that toppled long-time president Hosni Mubarak turned into clashes around the country.

On Saturday, violence exploded in Port Said after a court sentenced to death 21 supporters of a local football club for their involvement in a deadly soccer riot last year.

Soon after the verdicts, rioters attacked police stations and the prison where the defendants were being held, sparking clashes with security forces that left 42 people dead at the weekend.

Fighting between police and anti-Morsi protesters have also broken out daily in and around Cairo’s Tahrir Square, but the capital was calm on Tuesday morning.

The crisis looks set to deepen after the National Salvation Front, a coalition of mainly liberal and leftist movements, called for countrywide protests on Friday after rejecting an offer from Morsi to hold talks.

“We will not participate in dialogue that is empty of content,” leading dissident Mohamed ElBaradei told reporters after a meeting of the NSF.

The bloc wants the formation of a national salvation government and the amendment of the Islamist-drafted constitution, before it agrees to any talks.

An NSF statement called “on the Egyptian people to take to the streets in all Tahrir Squares (across the nation) on Friday to stress the sanctity of the blood of the martyrs and achieve the goals of the revolution.”

The unrest highlights a deep split between Morsi’s mainly Islamist allies, and an opposition of leftists, liberals, Christians and Muslims calling for freedoms and the separation of the state from religion.

On Monday, the White House condemned the unrest and urged Egyptian leaders to make clear violence is never acceptable.

“We strongly condemn the recent violence that has taken place in various Egyptian cities. We look to all Egyptians to express themselves peacefully and look to Egyptian leaders to make clear that violence is not acceptable,” it said.

Mother sentenced to life in jail for killing her twins

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second

A Swiss court sentenced a mother to life in jail on Tuesday after she confessed to smothering her seven-year-old twins with a pillow and killing a third child — after denying the crimes for years.

The Horgen court, in the canton of Zurich, found the 39-year-old Swiss citizen of Austrian origin guilty of murdering the twins, a boy and a girl, and of manslaughter for the death of the other child, a baby boy, court spokeswoman Bea Rosenberger told AFP.

The woman was handed a life term, which in Switzerland usually amounts to around 15 years behind bars, and ordered to undergo psychiatric therapy while in prison.

The woman, identified only as Bianca B. by Swiss media, had for years insisted she was not responsible for the twins’ deaths in late 2007, but suddenly changed her story in a tearful confession during her trial last month.

She told the court she had murdered them both and also admitted to smothering her first child, a seven-month-old boy believed until then to have died from sudden infant death syndrome in 1999.

“I wanted him to be quiet for a while,” she was quoted as saying by the ATS news agency.

Despite maintaining her innocence for a long time, Bianca B. was sentenced to life in prison for the twins’ deaths in an earlier trial in March 2010, but she was granted a retrial after the court determined her defence had been flawed.

She has been in jail since the end of 2007 awaiting a final verdict, and the five years already spent behind bars will be deducted from her sentence, Rosenberger said.

At the opening of her new trial on December 12, Bianca B. described in detail how on the evening of December 23, 2007, she had gone into her son’s room after placing the children’s Christmas gifts under the tree and had suddenly, without thinking, picked up a pillow and pressed it against his face “until he stopped moving.”

She had then gone into her daughter’s room and done the same to her, before realising what she had done.

“I didn’t want this,” she told the court, in tears.

AFCON 2013: Nigeria vs. Ethiopia, Final score 2-0

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

Nigeria advanced to the quarterfinals of the Africa Cup of Nations after a very odd 2-0 win against Ethiopia. Nigeria needed victory to be sure of advancing no matter what happened between Zambia and Burkina Faso in the other game, and for 79 minutes it looked as though the Wayla Antelopes would hold out for a draw.

Nothing of particular note happened for most of the match. Nigeria looked relatively toothless, while Ethiopia were happy to soak up pressure and make vague gestures towards hitting the Super Eagles on the counterattack. At 0-0, Zambia and Burkina Faso were going to advance on the fair play rule.

Then, suddenly, it wasn't 0-0 anymore. Victor Moses burst into the penalty area and was scythed down with a two-footed challenge from Alula Girma, and the Chelsea man brushed himself off and sent Sisay Bancha the wrong way to score the goal that looked like it would lead Nigeria to the quarterfinals.

The Super Eagles' celebration was very nearly cut short just seconds later as Ethiopia fashioned their first real chance of the match, Saladine Said thumping a powerful effort goalwards only to be denied by a magnificent stop from Vincent Enyeama.

And then, suddenly, the points were wrapped up. Moses took advantage of a slip in the back to dash forwards, starting a three-on-one counterattack that was ended only by Sisay bringing the winger down in the box with another brutal tackle.

The goalkeeper was sent off, and with no substitutions still available, midfielder Addis Hintsa was forced to defend the spot kick. He fared no better than Sisay, and Moses made it 2-0 with another composed finish. That score lasted the seven minutes of injury time, leaving Nigeria as Group C runners-up ahead of defending champions Zambia.

AFCON 2013: Eagles must be ruthless against Ethiopia – Emenike

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 7 Second

Nigeria striker Emmanuel Emenike says his team must score more goals to win their Afcon matches, and this just ahead of their must-win clash against Ethiopia.

The Super Eagles take on the Ethiopian team on Tuesday evening at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.  Nigeria lead 1-0 in their first Group C matches against Burkina Faso and Zambia, but were let down by poor finishing.

Without a doubt a favourite to win the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations title, the Super Eagles have not been convincing.

The Burkinabe are top of the group with four points followed by Nigeria and defending champions Zambia on two each, while Ethiopia has only one.

Every nation has a chance to qualify for the quarter-final stage in what are must-win games for all. Emenike is under no illusion that they have to finish off their last group stage opponents with more goals.

“We need to be more ruthless in front of goal, maybe 1-0 could not be enough to claim victory, so we will do our best to score more goals in our next game,” said the Spartak Moscow forward.

“I knew from the onset that our group will be a most interesting and tough group, but no matter what, we just need to be optimistic of our qualification. As it is now, only victory against Ethiopia can give us the ticket.

“That means our destiny lies in our own hand and that is why we must give everything on Tuesday.”

The number nine scored on his AFCON debut against the Stallions and although he is happy with that fact, he is not happy with the result

Emenike added: “Like I have said before, my best is yet to be seen, this is just the beginning. I will always do my best to get the goals whenever I am in position to do so.

“My goals are possible because I got assists from my team mates, I appreciate everybody’s effort to make it happen. Together we will make Nigerians happy.

“It is always a thing of joy when a striker scores, but my happiness would have been more complete had we won all three points against Burkina Faso.

“Nigerians should keep their faith in us and we promise that the team will fly past Ethiopia on Tuesday. We have a lot to offer the country. We can do much more than what we did against Zambia and we will do that against Ethiopia.

Afcon: We will show Eagles we can play football —Ethiopia

0 0
Read Time:57 Second

Ethiopian coach, Sewnet Bishaw has said today’s match against Nigeria will afford his players the opportunity to show the world that they can play good football.

Nigeria go into their final group game chasing their first win, while Ethiopia are bottom of the pile with a point.

The Super Eagles stand in second place in Group C with two points, having conceded late equalisers to Burkina Faso and Zambia.

Nigerian captain Joseph Yobo and Chelsea midfielder Victor Moses face late fitness tests.

Ethiopia may be without striker Adane Girma, who scored their only goal of the finals, and Asrat Mergasa.

Girma has a leg injury after coming off in the Ethiopians’ defeat to Burkina Faso and Mergasa has a knee injury.

Speaking yesterday in Rustenberg, Bishaw said that “before the match I will tell my players to play football and to gain experience out of a huge team like Nigeria.

“We are here to play football and everybody is surprised by our football. Our mission is to show the rest of the world that we can play football. That is the message to my players.”
