US flu strain headed to Finland

A type of flu caused by the H3N2 virus, and prevalent in the USA, is moving into Europe. The National Institute for Health and Welfare THL says vaccines available in Finland are effective against this strain.

Two different flu strains are being seen in Europe this season, one of them, caused by the H3N2 virus, a growing import from North America.

"The description of the H3N2 is that it is a more aggressive virus. It may cause rather more serious forms of the illness," explains THL virologist Mika Salminen.

Jab offers protection

Salminen says that it is not possible to predict how hard the virus will hit Finland on the basis of the situation in the USA. However, he adds that the vaccines available in Finland give good protection against this virus, and that there is still time for people to get vaccinated.

Mika Salminen urges travelers in particular, and especially those in risk groups, to get a flu jab before setting off on any journey.

Telecommunications company Sonera may be cutting 235 jobs under a new organizational set-up merging customer services units and making adjustments to the company's mobile communications technology division.

The reorganization of customer services may lead to the loss of 135 jobs. Sonera says it will be concentrating its mobile communications technology in fewer localities which may trim 100 employees from the payroll.

Sonera is currently engaged in talks with employee representatives on restructuring in its consumer business operations that may lead to 40 job cuts.

At the end of the year, the company announced the elimination of 80 jobs, after the completion of staff reduction consultations.

HOLLYWOOD: Jodie Foster Is Gay, and It’s None of Your Business

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 33 Second

Hollywood actress Jodie Foster confirmed long-running speculation that she is gay by coming out at the Golden Globes awards on Sunday, but joked she wouldn't be holding a news conference to discuss her private life.

The notoriously private Foster stunned the audience of stars and Hollywood powerbrokers as she accepted a life-time achievement awarded by announcing she was now single.

"Seriously, I hope that you're not disappointed that there won't be a big-coming-out speech tonight," she said, "because I already did my coming out about a thousand years ago back in the Stone Age."

Foster said she had always been up front with trusted friends and family about her sexual orientation.

"But now apparently, I'm told that every celebrity is expected to honor the details of their private life with a press conference … that's just not me," she said.

Foster, 50, then talked to her "ex-partner in love" Cydney Bernard, from whom she recently split, and their two sons in the audience.

"Thank you Cyd, I am so proud of our modern family, our amazing sons," Foster said.

Over the years, Foster had come under withering criticism from the gay community for not publicly recognizing she was gay.

The two-time best actress Oscar winner for "The Silence of the Lambs" and "The Accused" said she had valued her privacy because of her early acting career, which started at the age of three.

"If you had been a public figure from the time that you were a toddler, if you'd had to fight for a life that felt real and honest and normal against all odds, then maybe you, too, might value privacy above all else," she said.

‘’That you Emmanuel Tometin on Aug.  17, 2006 at Oke sele farm Igirigiri, Ado-Ekiti,  in Ado Judicial division murdered Funmilayo Ajayi.’’

Pre-Trial Motions May Delay Start Of Indian Gang-Rape Case

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 6 Second

The trial of an Indian student who was gang-raped and murdered appears likely to be delayed after defence lawyers on Monday filed a number of motions.

The motions included those seeking complete medical records of the victim and alleged torture of a defendant.

Five men have been charged in the fatal gang rape of the 23-year-old, which sparked widespread outrage and protests.

After initial treatment in New Delhi, where she was attacked, the woman was moved to a Singapore hospital where she died of severe injuries on Dec. 29.

Judge Namrita Aggarwal was still expected to transfer the case to a special fast-track court that will begin the trial.

But during pre-trial proceedings on Monday, lawyers for the accused filed several pleas which the prosecution and police must reply to.

The next hearing was set for Jan.17.

VK Anand, among the four lawyers appointed for the accused, said that he had asked the court to examine the role of Naresh Trehan, a renowned cardiovascular surgeon who had checked the victim before she was airlifted to Singapore.

“We are seeking the complete medical records and bulletins of the victim. There are a lot of medical discrepancies … Why was the victim shifted to Singapore in such a precarious condition? We want to know the real cause of her death,’’ he said.

Manohar Lal Sharma, counsel for another accused, alleged that his client was being tortured at New Delhi's Tihar jail by “inmates at the behest of Delhi Police''.

Judge Aggarwal instructed jail authorities to conduct daily checks to ensure his safety.

Another lawyer, AP Singh, filed a petition challenging the handcuffing of the accused, arguing it violated their human rights.

Singh blamed the delay in sending the case to a fast-track court on police, who he said had not yet provided the complete set of documents, including copies of the charge sheet.

Police were expected to submit a supplementary copy of the charge sheets containing the post-mortem report of the victim from the Singapore hospital.

“It could take a few more hearings before the case is committed to the fast-track court,’’ Singh said.

Judge Aggarwal has been holding pre-trial hearings behind closed doors, after chaotic scenes in the public gallery last week caused her to clear the courtroom.

A sixth suspect in the case is to be tried by a juvenile court, if his claim to be 17-years-old is verified.

NIGERIA: Kwara, Saudi Foundation To Partner On Education

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 16 Second

The Kwara Government is to partner with the International Islamic Foundation of the World Muslim League in Saudi Arabia to boost  education  in the state.

Gov. Abdulfatah Ahmed said this  on Monday when the General Secretary of the Foundation, Dr Ali Magbul Al-Amri,  paid him a courtesy visit at the Government House in  Ilorin.

He said this was part of his administration’s effort at enhancing human capital development in the state.

Ahmed said the proposed 2013  budget accorded the highest  vote to  education  as an indication of the government’s commitment to the development of the sector.

“Our decision to put much emphasis and funding of the education sector is because education is one of the most important instruments that mankind can use for growth and development,’’  he added.

Government, he said, would be committing about $15 million  to drive the International Vocational Centre where youths would learn skills and become entrepreneurs.

Ahmed identified infrastructure for acquisition of  technical skills and special needs as major areas of need by the state.

In his remarks,  Al-Amri said the Foundation’s nine-point agenda included  eradication of illiteracy and evolvement of syllabi that promote human capital resources.

He said the body was also interested in the  creation of access to education for the physically challenged, adding that it was ready to partner with the state government on its education agenda.

NIGERIA: Senate Vows To Pursue Pension Probe To Logical Conclusion

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 12 Second

The Senate on Monday in Abuja pledged its determination to ensure that the investigation into pension administration was pursued to a logical conclusion.

Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs Enyinnaya Abaribe made the pledge while briefing newsmen on issues of focus for the Senate when it resumes from end of year break on Jan. 16.

The News Agency of Nigeria recalls that the Joint Senate Committee on Establishment and Public Service and States and Local Government Administration had been saddled with the assignment.

The investigation, however, suffered a setback following the inability of Mr Abdulrasheed Maina, Chairman of the Pension Reform Task Team (PRTT) to honour the committee’s summons over alleged N195 billion pension scam.

Abaribe said that every committee of the Senate was representative of the Senate and any decisions emanating from a committee carried the approval of the Upper Chamber of the National Assembly.

He said that contrary to insinuations, the Senate would not leave anything to chance in its avowed determination to bring the pension probe to a logical conclusion.

“The rule is that every committee is a representation of the Senate as a whole. That means that if a committee of the Senate is operating or is summoning anybody, it’s not just that committee it is the whole Senate.

“That means that whatever sanctions that are going to come are not sanctions that will come from just that committee, but sanctions that will come from the whole Senate.

“On the matter of Maina, let me state unequivocally that the Senate cannot be said to be helpless in the matter. On the contrary, the Senate will pursue the matter to its logical conclusion,'' he said.

The Senate spokesman urged the Presidency to take a critical look at the House of Representatives' insistence not to pass the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) 2013 budget until the Director-General, Ms Arume Oteh is sacked.

He advised appointees of the President to avoid any situation that was capable of creating disaffection between the executive and the legislative arms of government.

“Beyond that we also feel in the Senate that anybody that works for Mr President should as much as possible not put Mr President at loggerheads with the parliament.

“I don’t think there is any individual that is far more important to the country than the rest of us.

“The House of Representatives and the Senate are representatives of the people and whenever they collectively take a position you have to assume that the position is in the best interest of the nation,'' Abaribe said.

NIGERIA: Comedian Okey Bakassi’s Letter To God

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 39 Second

We know Nollywood comedian Okey Bakassi is a funny man, but this time around, he’s gone religious!!!
Read his letter to God and let’s have your take:

Dear Almighty Sir,

I don’t know what time it is in your area so I’ll simply say good day Sir. I’m very grateful for making me experience 2013 and I’m sorry for all my sins in 2012.
I would have promised not to sin in 2013 but I don’t want to lie because you already know my future.
Please help me be a better and more successful person this year. Also protect and bless my family, friends and fans.

I hereby present some personal issues before you:

1. Will Nigeria be better this year or ever? If no I seek your approval to go and take up citizenship somewhere else but if yes be fast before they empty our treasury and our oil wells run dry.
2. Please help us with the exchange rate. Help de Naira catch up with the dollar.

3. Have you relocated Hell to Nigeria? If no, what are Boko Haram and Kidnappers doing here?
4. Do we allow GEJ do another term? If no please do something before we ‘Occupy Everywhere’.
5. Adjust the brain of our youths so that their savings will end up in bank accounts not boutiques and night clubs.

6. There are more diseases now than brands of condom available. What do we do? Urgent answer required.
7. Please is your son coming soon? We have forgotten the meaning of true love since the last time he came.
8. Please I need your BB pin if possible, I want to send you pictures and links of what pastors and government officials are doing with our money. I guess you already know.

On behalf of my wife and children I say thank you.

Yours Faithfully
Okey ‘Bakassi’ Onyegbule
