Read Time:1 Minute, 14 Second
The body of the 22 year old Onyeka Kingley Raphael was found in the bottom of a swimming pool in the home he worked as a domestic help. His body was brought out from the pool early Saturday morning in a house at Babatunde Asimi Street, Ogudu GRA.

His family, being suspicious about the incident has petitioned the police, asking for a thorough investigation. An eye witnesses said when Kingsley's body was removed by policemen, there were no injuries on his body except a twisted neck, saying that the domestic worker may have been strangled before being dumped in the pool.
His family also found out that the dinner Kingsley made for himself the night before was still on the kitchen table, with his cap close to it, and also the fact that the security man who was home at the time of the incident said he didn't see or hear anything. The family also claimed that Kingsley and his boss, a retired accountant named Tunde Williams had a misunderstanding a month earlier which almost got him fired. Kingsley had wanted to leave his job but his elder brother begged him to stay because he needed the money for school.

The police told the family that an autopsy will be carried out to find out the exact cause of his death and they also told reporters that a thorough investigation will be carried out. RIP

First Look At Danny Glover As Shinishi In ‘Tula, The Revolt’ + More Photos

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second

Here’s your first look at Danny Glover in the upcoming slave uprising film, Tula, The Revolt, from Dutch director Jeroen Leinders, which is based on a true story about a slave uprising on the island of Curacao, a Dutch colony in 1795, and the man called Tula, who stood up against his oppressors, and led the revolt that would last about a month.

Also surfaced is an on-set video visit which gives you a little bit of footage for the film.

Glover leads a pack of international actors that also includes Obi AbiliJeroen Krabbé,Derek de LintHenriette Tol and Barry Hay.

Obi Abili (a UK actor of Nigerian decent) will star in the film as the titular Tula, while Glover will play Shinishi, the elder of the group, a role that the producers are calling a very important one.

The filmmakers hope to complete the film to release in 2013, a year that marks the 150th anniversary since slavery was finally abolished on the island of Curacao (1863).

Principal photography is underway.

The inspiration for the rebellion was that Tula and an initial group of 40 to 50 slaves requested 3 things of their overseers: an end to collective punishment, an end to working on Sundays, and lastly, the right to buy their wears from anywhere they wanted, not just from their masters, which was the rule of the day.

Apparently, they didn’t get what they asked for, and thus, Tula organized a group of fellow slaves who resolved not to work as slaves anymore. The rebellion, which actually began peacefully and was meant to be ‘won with words, rather than arms,” lasted for more than a month. But, unfortunately, it didn’t end as peacefully as it begun, because the colonial forces crushed the revolt, Tula was captured, tortured, convicted and executed.

This film will tell his story – a man who’s revered in Curacao today. The producers are calling it an action-drama.

With production in motion, some official images from the film have surfaced, as well as an on-set report (which isn’t subtitled unfortunately); all are embedded within this post.

First the photos, and underneath them, the video:

Tika Sumpter, Jay Pharoah, John Leguizamo, Bryan Callen Will ‘Ride Along’ w/ Ice Cube, Kevin Hart

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 19 Second

A long road for this project, which we first reported on in 2009, on the old S&A site.

A recap… amongst the many projects Ice Cube has been attached to in some capacity over the years, both on the big and small screens, is this one, titled, Ride Along, a feature film that was originally set up at Warner Bros, in which Cube was to star in as a rogue cop who tries to break off his sister’s engagement to an upper-crust white psychiatrist, by inviting his future brother-in-law on a ride-along.

The project, initially penned by Greg Coolidge, had already gone through several rewrites, at the hands of different screenwriters, and at the time of our last post on it, was in the hands of relative newcomer, Jason Mantzoukas

Fast-forward 3 years later, with the announcement that Universal Pictures picked up Ride Along out of turnaround from New Line (a Warner Bros subsidiary), and has fast-tracked the project, aiming for an October production start, with Ice Cube still starring, but with some new names attached in front of and behind the camera.

First, Kevin Hart, who’s really hot right now, as his name has come up for a handful of projects since Think Like A Man’s release; he was to co-star with Cube as “a second grade teacher who is ready to get married, but first he must survive a Training Day-like ride along experience with her tough cop brother, who doesn’t want the marriage to happen and tries to scare off the suitor.”

So the “race play” is officially gone, with the suitor now a black man. And also of note, he’s no longer a second grade teacher, but instead has become a high school security guard.

Second, also fresh off the success of Think Like A ManTim Story will direct Ride Along.

Third, also riding high from the success of Think Like A Man, producer Will Packer will co-produce the project via his Rainforest Films banner, with Ice Cube’s Cube Vision, and Matt Alvarez’s LBI Entertainment.

And finally, fourth, the most recent news that Tika Sumpter, Jay PharoahJohn Leguizamo and Bryan Callen have joined the cast as well.

Sumpter will play Hart’s fiancee; Callen will play a wily, undercover cop alongside John Leguizamo; and Pharoah will play a street-smart informant.

Matt Manfredi and Phil Hay have taken over writing duties, and are said to be currently working on a rewrite of the script, after several previous rewrites.

Read Time:51 Second

Keith David will guest star on an upcoming season 2 episode of Fox’s Touch – the series that once co-starred Danny Glover (he made an exit after the first 6 episodes of season 1) and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (she’s not returning for season 2).

TVLine reports that David will play a character named Dutch, described as “a grizzled ex-Navy Seal who’s also an old friend of Kiefer Sutherland’s character, Martin.

What that episodes plot will be, and how David’s character will be involved in it, aren’t yet public.

The series centers on a father (played by Sutherland) who discovers that his genius son (Jake, played by David Mazouz) is communicating with him through a complex series of numbers and is able to predict events before they happen.

Season 2 of Touch will debut in January 2013.

David, one of the hardest working actors in the biz, can currently be seen in Cloud Atlas, and Matthew Cherry’s The Last Fall.

Meet Peter Ramsey: The Director Of Dreamworks Animation’s Rise Of The Guardians

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 0 Second

Well like they say, you learn something new every day.

The brother in the photo is Peter Ramsey, who is the director of Paramount/Dreamworks Animation’s new feature film, Rise of the Guardians, which is coming out on Nov. 21.

There are, of course, many people of color involved in animation, but Ramsey is, to my knowledge, the first one involved as director for such a major, big budget, studio release as Guardians.

His background is rather interesting, starting out as storyboard artist in the early 1990’s on many live action movies, such as Panic Room, A.I., Man in Black, Minority Report and Fight Club

Along the way, he also worked as the second unit director on a few films, including two John Singleton pictures – Higher Learning and Poetic Justice.

He eventually, about five years ago, became involved with Dreamworks Animation as an artist and director on a couple of TV projects, which in turn resulted in his biggest challenge and carrer move to date, directing the Guardians feature.

I never thought there would ever be a reason to post the trailer for Guardians. But now there is:

Syria: Clashes erupt in Palestinian refugee camp

0 0
Read Time:41 Second

BEIRUT (AP) — Activists say Syrian troops and rebels are clashing in a Palestinian refugee camp in the capital, Damascus.

They also say fighter jets have resumed attacks on the northern province of Idlib and suburbs of the capital. Tuesday’s airstrikes come a day after activists reported the most widespread bombing in a single day since Syria’s 19-month crisis began.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees say fighting in the Yarmouk refugee camp broke out after midnight. They had no word on casualties.

Palestinian refugees in Syria tried to stay on the sidelines when the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in March. But many Palestinian youths have joined the fight as they became enraged by mounting violence and moved by Arab Spring calls for greater freedoms.

Wild boar killed after attacking and injuring 4 people in German

0 0
Read Time:40 Second

Berlin authorities say they shot and killed a 265-pound wild boar after it attacked and injured four people including a police officer in a residential neighborhood.

Police said Tuesday the boar bit a 74-year-old man on the back and leg, and knocked a 74-year-old woman to the ground and injured her hip on Monday afternoon in the Charlottenburg area of the capital. It also bit a 24-year-old woman before she climbed aboard a parked car to safety. All three were treated in a hospital.

Police say when a police officer arrived, the boar attacked him and cut his leg before he pulled his gun and killed the animal with “multiple shots.”

Wild boars are relatively common in green Berlin, though rarely cause problems beyond digging up gardens.

Read Time:42 Second

The Federal Labor Agency says the number of Germans unemployed dropped only slightly in October over the previous month, leaving the overall jobless rate unchanged at 6.5 percent.

Labor agency head Frank Weise said Tuesday the numbers show that even though economic growth has slowed amid the European financial crisis the job market overall remains robust.

Overall 2.753 million people were out of work in October, down 35,000 from September. When adjusted for seasonal factors, however, the number of jobless rose 20,000 for an adjusted unemployment rate of 6.9 percent.

October 2012 also saw 16,000 more jobless than in October 2011.

The Economy Ministry this month cut its growth forecast for 2013 to 1 percent from 1.6 percent, though increased this year’s outlook slightly from 0.7 percent to 0.8 percent.

Sandy leaves death, damp and darkness in wake

0 0
Read Time:48 Second

NEW YORK (AP) — As Superstorm Sandy marched slowly inland, millions along the East Coast awoke Tuesday without power or mass transit, with huge swaths of the nation’s largest city unusually vacant and dark.

New York was among the hardest hit, with its financial heart in Lower Manhattan shuttered for a second day and seawater cascading into the still-gaping construction pit at the World Trade Center.

The storm that made landfall in New Jersey on Monday evening with 80 mph sustained winds killed at least 16 people in seven states, cut power to more than 6 million homes and businesses from the Carolinas to Ohio, caused scares at two nuclear power plants and stopped the presidential campaign cold.

The massive storm reached well into the Midwest: Chicago officials warned residents to stay away from the Lake Michigan shore as the city prepares for winds of up to 60 mph and waves exceeding 24 feet well into Wednesday.

UK jails Nigerian ‘witchcraft’ sex trafficker for 20 years

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 32 Second

LONDON, (AFP) – A Nigerian sex trafficker who used witchcraft rituals to silence the teenage girls he smuggled into Britain for prostitution was jailed for 20 years on Monday.

Osezua Osolase, 42, tricked three impoverished Nigerian orphans into travelling to Britain before attempting to sell them to gangs in Europe for prostitution.

The recycling plant worker, who lived in Kent, southeast England, used west African juju rituals to instill terror in the three girls, aged 14, 16 and 17.

“You are undoubtedly a very, very dishonest man,” said judge Adele Williams as she sentenced him at Canterbury Crown Court in Kent.

“You are arrogant and manipulative; you are devoid of conscience, devoid of any compassion to your victims.”

Osolase, who has HIV, was found guilty after a six-week trial on Friday of five counts of trafficking for sexual exploitation, one count of rape and one of sexual activity with a child.

The fact that he had raped one girl knowing that he has HIV was a “seriously aggravating” factor, Williams said.

It was recommended that Osolase be deported once he has served his sentence.

He had convinced the girls to travel to Britain with fake Nigerian passports by promising them an education and modelling careers, the court heard.

He was stopped at Stansted Airport, north of London, in April last year while attempting to board a plane.

His 16-year-old victim told police that he had performed a juju ritual on her in Nigeria in which blood was taken from her and hair was cut from her head and genitals.

She was then made to swear an oath of silence.

Police believe there were at least 25 victims of Osolase’s trafficking ring, which smuggled girls into Britain before passing them on to gangs in countries including Italy and Spain.
