U.S. alarm as Egypt army undermines election result

Read Time:5 Minute, 30 Second

CAIRO (Reuters) – The United States expressed alarm that its protégés in the Egyptian army were abusing hopes for democracy by ordering more military rule just as the Muslim Brotherhood was claiming victory in the country’s first free presidential election.

The Islamists‘ self-assurance was contested by the other candidate in the run-off race, a former general who was prime minister when Hosni Mubarak was ousted last year by an army anxious to save itself from the revolution in the streets.

But there was still no result from the two-day poll, although independent officials privately spoke of a likely win for Islamist Mohamed Morsy over military man Ahmed Shafik.

Yet whatever the outcome – and one electoral supervisor said it might not be announced until Thursday – the new president was shorn in advance of much of his power by a decree issued by the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) just as polling stations closed and two days after it had dissolved a new, Islamist-led parliament.

In protest, the liberal urban youth movements which were in the vanguard of protests at Cairo’s Tahrir Square 16 months ago, as well as the Brotherhood and other supporters of the uprising, plan a major demonstration there later on Tuesday.

“This decree just makes plain the hegemony of SCAF,” said Khaled Ali, a liberal lawyer eliminated in the first round of voting. “This decree strips the president of the powers he was elected to have and gives those to the military council.”

The constitutional declaration, one more twist in Egypt‘s halting progress toward democracy since the Arab Spring, effectively means that a July 1 deadline promised for a handover to civilian rule has been reduced to semantics, since the new civilian president looks to be very close to powerless.

Liberals and Islamists called it a “military coup”.

U.S. “DEEPLY CONCERNED”

Washington, which only in March agreed to hand over $1.3 billion in annual aid to the biggest army in the Middle East, was far from pleased – not least, it seemed, because the man in charge of the council, Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, failed to mention his plan when assuring Defense Secretary Leon Panetta on Friday that the target date for civilian rule would be met.

“We are deeply concerned about the new amendments to the constitutional declaration, including the timing of their announcement as polls were closing,” a Pentagon spokesman said, adding that he did not think Tantawi had alerted Panetta when they spoke.

“We believe Egypt’s transition must continue and that Egypt is made stronger and more stable by a successful transition to democracy,” spokesman George Little said. “We support the Egyptian people in their expectation that the (SCAF) will transfer full power to a democratically elected civilian government, as the SCAF previously announced.”

Egyptian democracy was relatively low among U.S. priorities during the 30-odd years Washington was funneling aid and arms to a Cold War ally which led Arab peace moves toward Israel in 1979 and was later fighting a common enemy in militant Islam.

But since Egyptians rose up to end six decades of military rule, U.S. leaders have pledged to support them, even if that means accepting a role for the Brotherhood, a long-suppressed movement that wants Islamic law and which spawned offshoots such as the militant Palestinian Hamas movement across the Middle East.

Washington may have limited room for leverage on Tantawi, a familiar figure to U.S. commanders after his 20 years as Mubarak’s defense minister. Little said the Pentagon wanted such close relations to continue and there was no mention of possible sanctions. “We’re going to monitor events closely,” he said.

NEW RULES

The SCAF announced the new regulations in its role as guardian of a revolution which some of its standard-bearers now fear has fallen victim to a deadlock between the army and religion which has characterized Egypt since colonial times.

The president, whose powers had not previously been defined following the suspension of constitutional provisions used in the Mubarak era, can only appoint a government whose every law must be endorsed by SCAF, which has taken back the legislative powers it had passed to a new parliament elected in January.

A new timetable set down for writing a constitution, passing it by referendum and then electing a parliament could leave Tantawi in charge until 2013, according to the legal text.

Morsy attracted support from many who reject his religious agenda and the imposition of Islamic law but wanted to bar the way to Shafik, 70, whom they see as the heir to the old regime.

As Islamists cheered, unemployed Mohamed Mahmoud, 28, did not share their joy: “I voted for Morsy but I can’t say I’m happy,” he said. “I’m still afraid of both and what they may do.

“I don’t want an Islamic state or a new Mubarak state.”

The order indicated that the army, which controls swathes of Egypt’s economy, has no intention of handing substantial power to its old Islamist adversary and may be hoping that public disillusionment with the Brotherhood’s performance will reduce its influence on the new constitution and the next parliament.

Israel fears growing hostility in Cairo and said on Monday an Israeli and two militants were killed in an attack on its Sinai desert border where the Jewish states is building a fence.

“We can see a disturbing deterioration in Egypt’s control of the Sinai’s security,” Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said.

“Whoever wins, we expect him to take responsibility over all of Egypt’s international commitments, including the peace treaty with Israel and security arrangements in the Sinai, and to put an end to these attacks swiftly.”

Morsy, though allied with figures who call for Israel’s destruction, has said he would respect Egypt’s treaty with the Jewish state, on which much of Cairo’s U.S. aid depends.

The Brotherhood has contested the army’s power to dissolve the present parliament. It has warned of “dangerous days” ahead.

But few see the Islamists, who hung back at the start of the revolt, launching a violent grab for power soon.

The failure of the parliament to draft a constitution – liberals accused the Islamists of religious zealotry – has left SCAF warning it may step in. Some lawmakers from the dissolved assembly, defying an army ban on entering the parliament building, met there to debate a new constitution on Monday.

But many expect SCAF to name its own drafting panel soon. It has also formed a new National Defense Council, to include the civilian president, but on which soldiers have a majority.

BECOMING A RESPONSIBLE, CONFIDENT AND SAFE DRIVER

0 0
Read Time:10 Minute, 19 Second

Driving is a serious responsibility with physical and mental abilities impacting on the driving activities of a driver. It is more than moving a vehicle and knowing how to use the accelerator, brake pedals and steering. Driving is at best when you have knowledge and required skills to drive competently in accordance with those rules and regulations guiding the public roads. A safe and responsible driver has responsibility which makes him a good citizen. Driving is a learned skill acquired with much practice. It is also more important to drive with due regards for safety and convenience of other road users. Driving entails concentration, calmness, and with consideration and respect for others. And at the same time, a driver should ensure proper and total control of his vehicle at all times. That means a driver must not allow anything to take their attention from the road, therefore good anticipation and concentration will help to prevent these usual incident becoming accidents on our roads. The safety of others depends on you when you are on the wheel.

Moreover, a good and responsible driver will always remember that the three most vulnerable elements at the road junctions and roundabouts are pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. These people have to be recognised and respected. They should be given priority in all ramifications; in zebra crossings (pedestrians’ crossings), foot paths or sidewalk or pavement, junctions and roundabouts. That is why concentration and good judgement at all times are parts of requirement needed to qualify a person as a responsible and good driver. More importantly, a driver must meet the minimum age requirement and hold appropriate driving licence and basic insurance for the vehicle being driving on public roads.

The practice of issuing driving licence to people without meeting the standard driving test and practical training is nothing less than giving out licence to kill. This is common almost all developing countries of Africa, Asia and South America. Some people will receive their driving licence without able to distinguish between a clutch and brake pedals. There is no probability that anyone that got his licence in such manner will not have an accident (let‘s pray to be minor) which can cause a devastating set-back to family of the accident victims. An estimated of 1.17 million deaths occur each year worldwide due to road accidents. The majority of these deaths, about 70 percent occur in developing countries. Over 10 million people are crippled or injured each year.

Meanwhile, a safe and responsible driver have responsibility in obeying and minding the rules of the road, risk perception, hazard awareness, eco-driving (frequent check-up or maintenance of their vehicle for safety and reduction of air pollution) and good driving behaviour. The first important safety guide for a driver is good condition of the vehicle in question. As we know that not only human errors or condition of the roads can lead to accident, equipment failure can also be responsible. Frequent or regular maintenance or “check-up” of your vehicle can prevent it from endangering lives. The vehicle engine, Brakes, Seat Belts, Headlights, Tyres (including spare-tyres), Wipers, Indicators, Steering-wheel, and Speedometer etc should be in good conditions. With all these in order, you have already passed an important part of safety driving.

Low seat belts wearing rates in developing have significantly contribute to automobile accidents and serious injuries. Seat belts will reduce the forces your body experiences in a crash. It keeps you from flying through the dashboard and windscreen in a sudden stop or crash. A responsible driver must put on his seat belt before moving his vehicle and must ensure that other passengers including children wear the correct and approved restraint appropriate to their size and weight. You should not risk your life and that of other with bad, loosed, fragile or fake seat belts. A properly worn seat belt protects the mother and the unborn baby in any unforeseen crashes.

Alcohol, drug and tobacco are other negative elements that cannot be “mix-up” with driving. These two elements are driving enemies and they should be avoided with much seriousness. Never drink alcohol when you have a plan to drive and never offer an alcoholic drink to someone else who is intending to drive. It is more advisable to arrange for somebody to pick you up or you go with public transport if you must drink in a party. The result of an accident through drinking touch many people, it is not just only those physically involved, but many relations, families, friends, ambitions and careers can be ruined in a split of second. Have you ever seen any human being on earth who has never been affected by accident either directly or indirectly? That is why it is collective responsibility of every living souls to participate and involve in this mission to eradicate or reduce the ever increasing volumes of accidents worldwide. Nearly one-third of teen drivers who were killed in motor vehicle accidents had been drinking according to recent world research.

Meanwhile, Alcohol affects your judgement and abilities while driving, it slows your reaction to obstacles on the roadway and it reduces coordination and total control of the vehicle apart from given a false sense of confidence. Alcohol relaxes you and increases your chances of falling asleep on the wheel. Alcohol level rises quickly on empty stomach and intensity or tolerance effects of alcohol differs and depends on a range of factors such as age, weight, gender, metabolism, current stress level, quantity of alcohol and whether the person have eaten recently. The effect of alcohol manifests its maximum point in human body one hour after the last cup of beer. So you have to take a long sound sleep after a hangover of alcoholic drinks before handling a steering. A driver should not drive under the influence of drugs or medicine which is banned and very dangerous risk to serious accident. In essence, you should not drug drive that is “don’t drug drive”. Some prescribed drugs you bought on chemist or pharmacy shops like sedative and analgesics (pain relievers) can result to drowsiness, blurred vision and tranquillisers like cough syrup, cold tablets and sleeping tablets can reduce driving ability. You must not take medication less than an hour before driving.
Smoking on its part cause distractions while driving, produces smoke that irritates to the eyes and can easily lead to drowsiness in few minutes as you start smoking.

Over-Speeding and Gamble Over-taking are other negative elements that a good and responsible driver should be avoided in all ramifications. It is forbidden to overtake when you don’t have the best view of the road ahead or when in doubt. Drivers are prohibited to overtake on pedestrian crossing and railway or metro crossings respectively. Speed kills. Over-speeding have sent many people to grave beyond. It is basic fact without embarking on any research that “the faster you drive on the road, the more likely you are to crash”. Driving is transportation and not competition or race among drivers like Schumacher, Hamilton, Alonso, Button etc. The higher the speed of a vehicle, the longer the braking distance. Besides, stopping distance is doubled on wet roads. Driver should always obey the speed limits for road and for his vehicle. Driving a vehicle without a functioning speedometer should be taken as serious traffic offence in African and Asia countries. So, it is better to late to your destination (if you cannot leave earlier) than to be the late.

Two-Second-Gap-Rule (TSGR) is another factor that can make a driver safe and responsible on the road way. There is a dictum which says; “Only a fool breaks the two-second-gap-rule” This is a safety margin that all drivers should allow as a safe separation distance between you and the vehicle in front. This have to be doubled (four-second-gap-rule) on wet roads or when its rainy. It never safe when driving too close to vehicle in front. It gives time to react. This is one of the best safe driving principles.

Telephone is an important use of communication especially in emergency period or while away from home or office, but it should be avoided while on steering. Using of mobile or any other hand-held telephones are prohibited while driving throughout the world. It is now a serious traffic offence to be communicating or sending or reading messages with your mobile phone while driving on public roads. It is better and more appropriate to pull over to a save place to receive or make a call.

Obeying all traffic rules and regulations is another important requirement to be a safe and responsible driver. Most accidents occur because some drivers fail to recognise, respect and obey some important traffic signs and road markings. All drivers must always stop at the STOP sign even if there is no vehicle coming from either sides. Red traffic triangles usually give you a warning. Red circles traffic sign tells you what you must not do. Blue rectangle traffic signs usually gives you information and Circular traffic sign with blue background tells you what you must do. Road markings are also very important as traffic road signs. Solid while lines on the road means do not cross. Broken white lines means that your vehicle can cross and triangle lines on the road junction also give you instructions such as to stop or give way. Meanwhile, yellow lines road marking are used to make some form of waiting restriction. There are two types; double yellow lines mark length of the road, where there is no waiting at any time. Single yellow line indicates a shorter period of restriction such as a day time. Besides, all drivers should obey and pay special attention to all supplementary signals and personal assigned to regulate traffic by traffic authority or road under construction which all signs have a yellow background.

Meanwhile, a responsible driver should always slow-down and give way to pedestrians on zebra crossings and when turning to a new street road and people are crossing. Driver should recognise that children and old mummies and daddies on the road. They always find it difficult to judge the speed at which a vehicle is approaching because as they are getting older, their sight, hearing and reaction times may not be as sharp as they were used to be in the “good old days”. Children on their own part tend to focus on one thing at a time and as they are small in size which makes it difficult for drivers to see them. Avoid driving in poor weather such as wind blowing, night travelling and heavy-rainfall because, when it comes to vision, human eyes takes a long time to adjust to changing light. Driving a passenger vehicle with a capacity of more than twelve passengers should have a first-aid kit, a spare tyre and at least one fire extinguisher and emergency exit doors and windows. It is very important to have periodical eyes test that ensure your eyes have not deteriorated especially when you need glasses to read vehicle number plates.

Finally, a responsible, confident and safe driver have responsibility in obeying and minding the rules of the road, risk perception, hazard awareness, eco-driving (frequent “check-up” or maintenance of their vehicle for safety and reduction of air pollution) and good driving behaviour. And most importantly, you should have total control of yourself, the vehicle and your immediate environment to ensure a safe and responsible driving habit. It is definitely not a joking matter as there is no replacement for a life lost or permanent disability due to road accidents. Always remember that a minute patience or endurance with other road user can safe a life.

The Quality of a Good Politician in a Democratic Society

0 0
Read Time:8 Minute, 55 Second

The first principle of unalienable rights recognises that everyone is naturally endowed by their Creator with certain rights that cannot be infringed or given away. Amongst these rights are life, liberty and pursuit of happiness. In order to secure or safeguard these vital rights, “…government are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from consent of the governed” as declared by Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence (1776), who was elected as the third President of the United States of America (1801-1809). Constitutions are also made for the purpose of  securing, protecting, promoting good governance, accountability and welfare of all citizens-the governed. The government instituted among men is the elected representatives who are also known as the politicians. These politicians are required to implement social reforms and policy measures that contribute to the general welfare of the populace.

My little Oxford dictionary defines politician as “person engaged or interested in politics” and politics as “science and art of government; political affairs or life or principles etc.” Politics consists of “social relations involving authority and power”. A politician is defined as one who is actively involved in politics or one who holds or seeks a political office. A politician is an individual who is involved in influencing public policy and decision making in government. Politicians play a central role in our lives. They are the concentrated voices of the people that make all efforts to improve their constituencies and peoples’ welfare. Good and dependable politicians are delight to serve the people and consider themselves as servants and people their paymasters. They represent the hopes, aspirations and the interests of every citizen in the state.

A politician’s qualities are his characters that are natural, while some of the qualities are as a result of  external influences. Promising politicians qualities are often backed by skills, experiences, intelligence, integrity, with instincts -all combined together to achieve their goals. First and foremost, the best quality of a politician is honesty, God fearing and loving. A faithful and effective politician is trustworthy and reliable. He must capture the essence of truth, display sincerity, candour and practices what he preaches. He makes decisions and accepts responsibility for his actions and his words. The same is true in his dealing with his people. He makes promises and keeps those promises. Somebody that people may be relied upon. Loving people with all his heart, might, mind, soul and striving to help them as a true mark of responsible politician.

Moreover, a fake politician, will after taking the oath of office with the Holy book and lousy thanksgiving services, use their power as an end in itself, rather than for public good, making them indifferent to the progress of their citizens. A good politician becomes the image of his creator. A good and responsible politician will give high regard for morality, law abiding with no tendencies to corrupt even a single cent or kobo. The greatest strength of good  politicians is deriving joy in serving people and not to steal tax payers money. They know that a fulfilling and meaningful life is created through service to others. To be an effective politician, your followers must have trust in you. And the very best way for a politician to build trust is to display good sense of characters and qualities composed of values, beliefs, traits and skills.

Another important quality of a good politician is integrity and technical skills to handle those challenging assignments, fiscal matters, policies, plans, projects, ideas and initiative solutions to problems. Integrity is consistency of actions, methods, measures, values, principles, expectations and outcomes. It is doing what is right, both legally and morally at all time even when no one is looking. Since politicians play very significant roles in the administrative processes, especially having hands in thousands of   important laws and policies to their communities and country, they should be well-educated, modest, with experience in social welfare, volunteering or should have done some good work for the society. A politician should have a thorough knowledge and up-to-date information about the constituency where he is going to contest an election.

Sir Winston Churchill, a famous British politician who served as Prime Minister twice (1940-45) and (1951-55) once said that “ a politician must have “the ability to foretell what is going to happen tomorrow, next week, next month, and next year. And to have the ability afterwards to explain why it didn’t happen”. Hence, a political career is meant for the people of high integrity and additional skills to achieve results and finding better ways of making life better
for the people they represent. Politics are not meant for dropped-outs, area fathers, thugs, assassins, criminals, illiterates god-fathers, inept, dubious and corrupt politicians. These person, apart from being greedy doesn’t know the importance of education and can never invest properly on it. Good governance, transparency and accountability will be eluding states and nations where these above mentioned set of people found themselves in the corridor of power.

An incompetent and irresponsible politician will make people to hang around his house like bees to honey to feed them with “amala”, “tuwo” or “eba”just for days. He prefers to give out expensive gifts, donations and bribes  from tax-payers money to win elections. An achiever will not need to do such things to win elections or people to their side in all ramifications. That is why you will hear people saying “Politics is a bad game of deceit and hatred”, “Politics is a do or die affair”, “Politics is a dirty business”, “Politicians are very sick people” and so on. It is those politicians of limited merits and capabilities that are bad and not politics. They cannot do more than their moral and intellectual capacity. A true democratic government is the best concept for the growth of any nation. A good politician enriches lives and feeds souls of many people and not making them to become beggars, touts, kidnappers, armed-robbers and fraudsters.

A good politician should be of a well disciplined personality with selfless service to make live better for his people. This should be reflected in the community where he lives in all ramifications. Discipline is necessary for an orderly society and political life, without it, the social life would become miserable. A selfless service is putting the welfare of the people you’re representing before your own. Winston Churchill described it as “the first of all human qualities because it is the quality which guarantees all others”.   A good politician firmly believes in taking care and maintaining the community of his people. He believes that community service is about giving back. According to Theodore Roosevelt, “the most successful politician is he who says what the people are thinking most often in the loudest voice”. A person or politician who is with criminal background, or any links with criminals or whose allegations on corruption have not been cleared by the law court should be disqualified to participate in elections.

Responsibility and party loyalty is another quality of responsible politician in a democratic state. A transparent politician is nearer to his people and meeting them to understand their problems. Only fake politicians are seen by voters when an election is near or change parties as footballers change clubs. As every parent has its responsibility to teach their children the principles of moral, culture, truth, sincerity to be self- responsible, so politicians need to integrate its citizens with importance of political responsibility and democratic values. A politician leads by example and knows his minimum responsibilities as an elected representative. A politician comes to politics to work for his constituents and not to work against them. He is the beck and call of the people and ready to listen to everybody. All these build a strong foundation for a dynamic society which will create solutions for any challenges, and finally develop strategies and political systems that will help implement those solutions automatically. He is quick to give hand to his fellow man. A reliable politician should be very loyal and committed to his party which shares his vision and goals. The value of loyalty simply depends on trust. A citizen should belong to a party with most brilliant, skilful, patriotic and dynamic  people with common goals and aspirations. Team work best when they have common goals, mutual respect and understanding of each party member’s strength. Politics is to unite and reach consensus and not to divide or create enmity among people. Power is only a product of collective action.

Finally, to become a great politician or statesman, you have to use your talents, skills, experiences, honesty, integrity, challenges and constraints with the positive effect that we can have in touching other human lives. Politician must leave his constituency better than before elected. Greatness is within reach of a politician who consistently do things they out to be doing. He learns from mistakes and criticisms. It is a bad politician that will see that all the good is in his side and that all the bad lies with his opponent or just because someone does not agree with him, does not mean that all their ideas and solutions are bad. Good politicians show respect to the views and experience of others. Nobody has a monopoly of wisdom. He who aspires to be a great politician should have the ability to find and analyse problems in their constituency and  find the best solutions for all these problems.   There is no problem in this world without solutions. A good politician knows that simply giving consistent effort in the little task of services, social reforms, kindness or sacrifice in day-to-day life leads to true greatness of a nation. If all politicians make it a point of responsibility to develop and make life better for people in their units, wards, constituencies, states and regions-we will definitely have a great country.

Kaduna/Zaria church bombings: CAN, CHAIN fault Tambuwal’s comment on reprisal

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 19 Second

KADUNA — The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, and the Kaduna State Christian Awareness Initiative of Nigeria,  CHAIN, have condemned the statement credited to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr Aminu Tambuwal, condemning reprisal attacks in Kaduna following bomb attacks on three churches in the state, Sunday.

Tambuwal had in his statement said it was wrong for innocent people who were not involved in the bombings to be attacked in reprisals.

However, a statement by Kaduna State Chairman of CAN, Rev. Samuel Kujiyat, read: “Though, the suicide bombings unexpectedly, provoked angry protests by youths in Kaduna South and environs, resulting in some people sadly taking the laws into their hands and bringing about deaths, injuries and destruction of property and vehicles of innocent people, this is regrettable and condemnable in all sense. But the reaction of Aminu Tambuwal, appears to be diversionary and political.

“He tends to be only concerned with reprisal attack than on those killed and injured in the attacks against churches and Christians. It is unfortunate and demeaning to his office as a leader in the country to think in this way”

Also, in a statement by its National Coordinator, Pastor Caleb Ma’aji, CHAIN said it did not support citizens who take the laws into their hands and strongly faulted the reaction of Tambuwal on June 17  bombings of churches in Kaduna.

It said it was an unhealthy approach as well as deviating from the reality, which is Boko Haram’s insurgency against Christians in the country.

It said: “This is something every person abreast with issues in Nigeria is aware of and this has continued unabated. While the House of Representatives under the leadership of Tambuwal has failed to take any concrete steps to safeguard lives and property of Christians who have been killed in thousands during worship on Sundays, the Speaker’s statement seems to be more concerned about the reprisal attacks carried out by some youths which is clearly the result of continuous and unabated bombings of peace abiding Christians than the factors that caused the reprisals.

“Meanwhile, CHAIN wants to make a clarion call on government to work and bring to an end the attacks against Christians and their churches in northern Nigeria.

“CHAIN wishes to remind the Nigerian public and the Presidency that Tirkania, one of the areas a church was attacked, is said to be where one suspected Boko Haram sponsor was arrested and released and the case has remained unaddressed.

“The understanding of CHAIN is that the Presidency needs to clean up its house as we cannot be sure anything has been done to counter the increasing threat to the rights to freedom of worship of Christians in northern Nigeria.”

DANA Air crash: Lagos begins Coroner’s inquest

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 42 Second

LAGOS — A Coroner inquest, investigating the circumstances surrounding the crash of Dana Airline in Lagos on June 3, which claimed no fewer than 150 lives and destroyed property worth millions of naira, yesterday, commenced sitting in Lagos.

The Chief Coroner, Mr. Oyetade Komolafe, sequel to the application made by Mrs. Funmi  Falana, granted the request to issue summon on the Aviation Minister, Mrs Princess Stella Odua; Governor Godswill Akpabio of Akwa-Ibom State; Dana Air management; security agencies; government agencies and some individuals to give evidence on the cause of the crash.

Mr Olisa Agbakoba, SAN and Mr Falana and Falana Chambers, had separately, requested an inquest into the cause of the air crash in line with the Coroner Law of Lagos State.

At the inaugural sitting of the Coroner Inquest at the premises of Alimosho Magistrate Court, Abule-Egba, Lagos, the Chief Coroner asked the lawyers to furnish the court with the names of those required to appear before it,  so that hearing summons would be issued on them.

Mrs. Funmi Falana, who represented one of the petitioners, told the court that in line with Section 32 of the Rules of the court, it was for the court to list and issue hearing summons on the relevant agencies and individuals, who are to give evidence before the court to carry out its statutory obligation.

Justice Lateefa Okunnu had following a request by Agbakoba and Falana, directed the Coroner of Alimosho District, Magistrate O. Komolafe to conduct an inquest into the Dana plane crash.

Mrs Falana told the court that the Minister of Aviation, who is in charge of the Aviation  Ministry and  Governor Akpabio, who said he had earlier issued a warning notice to the airline and others are necessary parties to be summoned by the court.

Otedola: I wasn’t bribed to support Lawan – Rep Bello-Osagie

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 43 Second

Rep. Bello-Osagie, the member representing Oredo Federal constituency of Edo State in the House of Representatives claims to dislike Farouk Lawan’s perceived arrogance. He, however, seconded Lawan’s motion to delist Femi Otedola’s Zenon Oil and Gas from the list of indicted companies. In this telephone chat, he claims he was not influenced to do so. Excerpts:

WHen Farouk Lawan moved the motion to drop Zenon Oil and Gas from the list of indicted companies in the report of the ad-hoc committee on Subsidy Management you seconded him. Why?

Let me explain how these things work in the House. Before considering that report on the floor of the House, Farouk made an application through a motion to expunge Synopsis Enterprises Limited and Zenon oil and Gas that the two companies should be expunged from the list of indicted companies by the committee.

This Synopsis and the other one were part of the other indicted companies. But before the presentation of the report to the House, Hon. Farouk Lawan vide a motion informed the House that the committee discovered that these two companies were not part of the fuel subsidy scam and that therefore they should be removed from the list of indicted companies.

So the Speaker now asked him to move a motion to that effect. As usual the Speaker will ask for secondment after a motion.  He moved a motion and over a hundred or more people raised their hands to second the motion because we were all satisfied with what the committee did.

Then the Speaker identified me and then I now seconded the motion. The next thing the Speaker did was to raise the question, that all those supporting the motion moved by Lawan should say aye, and those against should say nay. Everybody said aye without a single nay.

As a matter of fact what is fundamental is that this saga came in after the consideration of the report. It came to limelight after two weeks that I moved the motion. The House had no knowledge of what was going on until last week for some thing we considered two weeks ago. So that was what happened.

But some persons believe you may have been working with Lawan and that that was why you seconded the motion?
It is only people who want to play politics that will say something else. The truth is that not one person said nay to the motion moved by Farouk Lawan that very day. I have been moving motions and equally seconding motions at the floor of the House.  This is not the first time and besides, hundreds of people would have done the same that very day. I believe we all supported the report that day not knowing that it will be scandalous later.

It is because the House did not have the information about the scandal if not there is no way we would have passed it. And now if they are insinuating any other thing against me, personally I am not close to Lawan. Lawan is one person that will expect you to greet him first before he greets you and I don’t like that kind of person.

Discoveries in the report
Again, I am not a member of the committee. Secondly we are not friends he is just my colleague. But I was satisfied like every other Nigerian about the discoveries in the report. A lot of Nigerianns applauded the report and we could not have done otherwise. It was actually based on the joy, the recognition that we have done something good for our people that I seconded the motion. We were all happy until this matter came up. If outsiders applauded them why can’t I applaud the report? This bribery scandal came nearly two weeks after the consideration of the report by the House.

There is no question of inducement, I did what I did because the report was applauded by Nigerians and that is the truth. Nobody could have induced me because I am not even close to the chairman of the committee, Lawan. He is just a colleague so it will be very wrong for anybody to insinuate that I was involved in the bribery and that was why I seconded the motion.  If I knew about the scandal, there is no way we would have seconded or even acted on that motion

The Local And Global Franchising Of 419 Nigerian Churches

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 42 Second

To say that Nigeria is a 419 republic would be an understatement.  Practically everywhere you look there   is a scam. Whether in the government, the private  sector and nowadays even in the once hallowed churches,   there is an ongoing  scam every second of the day.  In the last few weeks alone, we have been regaled with a pension scam, the oil subsidy scam and the Farouk Lawan scam. To make matters worse, scamming has progressed to the trillion naira era.  But of all these heinous scams, the most sinister that should bother every right thinking person is the descent of the church and other religious organisations into barefaced fraud.  Scamming people in the name of God is the most vile, unconscionable and despicable crime that can ever be committed and serves as a pointer that the larger Nigerian society is fast becoming the biblical “Sodom and Gomorrah” which ended up in total destruction.

Nigeria has more churches than any other country on the planet. In practically every street there is a church. They sing, they preach and most importantly they extort their church members who pay generously in the hope of getting a better life.  The first sign of the fraudulent nature of Nigeria’s churches is the corruption, deceit, greed, lack of charity, lack of humility, hatred, bigotry and vices that pervade a society in which you can find a church in every street.  Because the churches exist only for the purpose of extortion, none of the values of honesty, love, charity or modesty ordinarily associated with the church can be found in the larger society.

In other parts of the world, churches preach and practice love, charity and other general   values which are immediately noticeable in those societies from the leadership to the common man.  Churches also engage in extensive charity not only locally but internationally, using some of the donations they get from church members to feed  the poor, build free or subsidised hospitals and schools for the under-privileged, build feeding centres,  hostels and houses  for the poor and homeless, provide quick relief for disaster victims,  give grants to students amongst others.  Indeed, the church historically started the payment of social welfare benefits to the poor and unemployed in the United Kingdom sometime in the 19th century before the government took over that function in later years.  In other climes, churches also act as social critics, criticising the government and fighting for social justice. It is on record that the church led the struggle for the abolition of the slave trade; they also led the civil rights movement in America and campaigned vigorously for the cancellation of the debt of poor countries amongst others.

Nigerian churches are exactly the opposite of churches elsewhere.  In Nigeria, churches become or aspire to become megabucks 419 businesses. The pastors are millionaires-billionaires and many of them ride on private jets, all from the money duped from vulnerable citizens.  Some pastors even have more fleets of jets than the presidency. They build the most expensive schools and hospitals and run them as elitist business institutions that most of their church members cannot afford. They build housing estates for the super-rich.  They wine, dine and collect contracts from monumentally corrupt, evil, wicked, unconscionable, sadistic, psychopathic and satanic Nigerian leaders who preside over the pauperization, oppression, dehumanization and genocide of their own citizens.

Unlike churches elsewhere that used social criticisms to free their suffering masses and bring change in their respective nations, Nigerian churches are in bed with the very destroyers   of the nation. They never criticise nor stand in opposition to the government, rather they play along and partake in the corruption that has crippled the nation and impoverished the masses.  In spite of Nigeria recording the highest levels of poverty in the world and in spite of the billions the churches make, they provide neither charity nor aid to the poor masses. They build neither hospitals nor schools for the poor. Like every fraud, the ultimate aim of these churches is not to help the poor, propagate love and charity, nor to practice what they preach but to use deceit to dupe the hapless citizenry and profit themselves at the expense of the poor masses and wretched of the earth.  Once they make the money, true to type they join the oppressors, wearing the most expensive robes, suits and jewellery, flaunting flashy cars, flying private jets when even the Pope owns no jet and living in vast opulent mansions reeking of luxury while their church members and the larger society throng the streets in abject poverty.

The 419 Pentecostal church businesses have now become so profitable that it has become a franchise locally and globally. All kinds of shady characters are given licenses to operate and extort the gullible public and pay remittances to the head office. Across every street in Nigeria and across the world, in the UK, USA, CANADA, Ireland amongst others, these franchises are popping up increasingly, manned by fraudsters.  They engage in the usual hullabaloo and make a handsome living from the proceeds of the scam while paying remittances to the head office.  It is now time to callout these fraudulent churches and serve them notice. Thankfully, the awareness is growing.  It is either they reform and practice religion the way it should be practiced or face attacks and be run out of town!

From Humblebee to Cuckoo Fumble-bee – the metamorphosis of Goodluck Jonathan

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 7 Second

This is a hilarious moment for Nigeria. Of course, I am not mad. I am only reflecting on the period in time and circumstances we have found ourselves as a people. Not too long ago, Shagari was indecisive, Buhari/Idiagbon too serious and impenetrable, Obasanjo was too amorous and unforgivable. Now we have it. A serious comedian as president. Jonathan no go kill man for this obodo Nigeria! Mba.
I just dey play with my tumbra of gin tonic. The weather cold pass wetin son of man fit just manage with ordinary heater. My Igala friend suddenly informed us of the ongoing demonstrations by students of the University of Lagos. Oh, sorry! Moshood Abiola University in good old Lagos. My broda, I no fit laugh. I just tire for dis country o jare!!
Reports say the students no want de brand new name bestowed upon dem by His Majesty, Emperor Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. Jonathan has only exercised his right as conferred on him by the uncharted constitution of the empire called Nigeria. Me no even no why these students dey protest instead of celebrating their new baptismal name. Instead of allowing akpteshi and burukutu to flow, dem dey hala. Dis one no clear me, I beg.
Other reports indicate that students of nearby Lagos State University dey celebrate. Dem celebration no get anything to do with the fact of the re-christening of Unilag but for the equality inherent in such a merciful act by the new maximum ruler of the land. For too long, Unilag students dey hala and shakara those of poor Lasu. Now equation don dey equal. No more bush meats, no more Unilag swagger, no more pepperless. Gbogbo awon guys na de same now, se you know?
While my sympathy is naturally with the unfortunate students of Unilag, who after 50 years, have suddenly being dashed a new father, may I be allowed for once to ponder on the manner of the leader at the helm of affairs in our dear country. Jonathan’s metamorphosis has been unique. From a spineless Vice President to a lacklustre Acting President and then a “shoeless” presidential candidate and now an imperious President who makes decisions with scant respect for the feelings of fellow citizens and without due consideration for established laws. With his amicably deceptive mien, Jonathan has treaded where even military rulers have dreaded to walk. Examples abound, my dear friend. Let us consider those of recent memory. Pump price of fuel was hiked in the manner in which Unilag was re-christened. By military fiat (sorry, civilian fiat!). Soldiers were deployed to the streets of Lagos, were they not? Someone just reminded me that this is supposed to be a civilian dispensation!
The story of Goodluck Ebere Jonathan is akin to the strategic transformation of the Bumblebee. It is the story of how power intoxicates. May Shakespeare rests well in his eternal sleep. Goodluck was the Humblebee with the scary coat seeking pollens here and there as both the Governor of Bayelsa state and lame duck Vice President under the tragic Servant Leader. The Humblebee repudiated the humility of Servant Leadership. He became opportunistically fascinated with political power at the demise of the Master Servant. His transformation started and the Bumblebee was born. Political lobbying and jockeying, including manipulations and subterfuge created the less than desirable Bumblebee. This was a hairy creature whose underbelly was still ugly but appearance rather deceptive. He became the Acting President. In furtherance of his unhidden political opportunism, Jonathan went to Nigerians with a cock and bull story of a shoeless boy from the Niger Delta. Foolishness took over the land; the Bumblebee can be a dangerous animal. Votes were massively rigged. He was even assisted in this process by the political power house in Western Nigeria. Never mind that they would be one of those to later criticize him.
The Bumblebee got to power. His initial act was to surround himself with his syncophants, including his brethren from the Niger Delta. Uncle Reuben was even included in the despicable package. His acts became untidy and uncoordinated. Bombs exploded on Independence Day in Abuja and the Bumblebee went on air without even waiting for security reports. He needed to defend his brethren who just came out of the creeks. The Bumblebee got so immersed in the juices of power, those juices are sweeter than his accustomed honey drink. He reeled from one controversy to another, from indecision to indecision. Mrs Bumblebee also provided adequate support as she used her “umblellah” to swagger from one territory to another. The Fumblebee was surreptitiously borne, alas!
Mr Fumblebee became emboldened. He dabbled into insane territory and took psychotic decisions, all in the “interest of Nigerians”. Pump prices of fuel were hiked even though later investigations showed monumental fraud. Soldiers were abused by being drafted to quench civilian uprising. Mr Fumblebee went on air, threatening to eradicate the dreaded Boko Haram sect in 3 months. This was after he had numerously consoled Nigerians on the terrifying deaths induced by same organization. Mr Fumblebee, in characteristic manner, even asked Nigerians to learn to live with the Boko Haram induced deaths at one stage! Now, this latest joker on a supposedly Democracy Day celebration!!
Back to my bottle of Gin plus tonic. Me, I know for de students wey dey protest. Why den dey hala no dey clear to me. Wetin, Mr Fumblebee do wey dey cause commotion? For practicing his belief in the concept of One Nigeria? De way things dey go for obodo Nigeria, Jonathan go kuku name de university wey dey for im papa backyard after Nnamdi Azikiwe or Shehu Aliyu Shagari. Afterall, no be One Nigeria we call am? Me, I go just siddon jeje. I no partake for dis roforofo of a protest. Even as Jonathan and pidipin (PDP) dey make terrible efforts to sectionalize the evergreen legacy of MKO. Na God dey punish Nigeria with shoeless mumu presido. Comot for me, o jare!
De man no dey tire. He just dey jump from one controversy to another. Even Baba Suwe no fit make person laugh pass Bro Jona. Na Unilag today, God knows wetin he go be tomorrow. Abeg, make I watch my mouth as very soon Brother Reuben go remind us of the corporate social responsibility of Mr Fumblebee. Jonathan don Cuckoo no be small. Uncle Reuben take follow am. As Bro Jona dey cry take style collect bribe, na same style im dey take dey punish Nigerians for dem stupid error in allowing the travesty of his selection to stay. Confusion dey reign supreme for de land and Boko Haram dey enjoy killing on an unrestricted basis. Dis country tire me no be small. Dis one pass bad luck. Na wetin we wan call MAU (Moshood Abiola University) students? Moshoodites or Abiolarites? Someone suggested Maulag – an era of Mau Mau in Nigeria? Na den go choose, no be my concern. All I know be say, dis latest joke from Bro Jona na one kind peculiar mess. Penkelemesi indeed!
I beg pass me another tumbra!!

Warning:  Article is admixed with Nigeria’s pidgin English. Apologies to readers that may feel offended as this is probably the language the Emperor and his darling wife may best understand.
