Eligible Voters Set to Detoxify Nigeria

0 0
Read Time:8 Minute, 4 Second

The word “toxin”was first used by a reputable organic chemist called Ludwig Brieger (1849-1919). According to my little “…Oxford Dictionary” the word signifies “poison especially of animal or vegetable origin; poison secreted by micro-organism and causing particular disease” To detoxify is to literally eliminate the poisonous substances- the toxins- from our lives. These generation of accidental, selfish, heartless and dubious leaders that have been in the corridor of power in Nigeria since 1960 are toxins that needed to be flushed out from our system. It simply means voting out those inept and corrupt leaders that our nation does not need again. These leaders and their cronies have been the major obstacles to the country’s socio-political and economic development since the last five decades. Since 1st of October,1960, the country has been plague with disease of disunity, pervasive corruption, religious violence, electoral fraud and mal-administration by succeeding leaders in all ramifications. This is the best time to detoxify a nation that has been keeping imbalances on the mind, body and spirit of its populace for a very long time. This is the time to vote for leaders who can stand the acid test of time and lead us to glorious height. The time has come for detoxification, personal repentance and national renewal in order to have a new nation. According to Martin Luther King Jnr, “The world is full of evil not because of those who do evil, but because of those who sit and let it happen”. It is now to stand up and vote for the best.

The past leaders have done their worst to this beloved country and leave us in a state of insecurity of lives and property, darkness when our neighbouring countries are celebrating years of undisrupted electricity supply. About 10 billion dollars was spent on power infrastructure few years ago without nothing to show for it. Many Nigerians are now crossing the boarder to send their children to schools. Our drinking tap-water cannot run continuously for a day. Jobless graduates and drop-outs have turned to armed-robbers, kidnappers, 419 cronies and even political thugs. Police is very corrupt. Public services embedded with fraud. The Fourth Estate takes bribe to jeopardise the ethic of journalism. Accusation of bribery being levelled against the judges. Most of our roads are death  traps. It has now gotten to a stage of importing food to Nigeria with all our untapped natural resources. Train has been forgotten as a means of transportation. It is only in Nigeria that a gubernatorial candidate who won an election in a State have to resume office as Governor about three and half years later because of electoral fraud. Nigerians are now tired of these so-called leaders with only rhetorics, lack of progress and unfulfilled promises.

There is no doubt that Nigerians are wrap up in the seriousness of their own lives. The wind of change is blowing and the branches of the trees must obey. The recent impressive turnout by Nigerians for the on-going voters registration exercise despite petty human and technical errors made by the electoral commission signify that the people have risen above the precarious situation to perform their civic duties as a step forward in voting the right leaders that will have huge impact on their lives. It is now more important than ever for all eligible voters to get out and register so that they can vote knowing that voting is one of the most important rights they are left with as Nigeria citizens. Nigerians know that voting in the next general elections will not only affect their life but that of their children and grandchildren. Nigerians have learnt that “moving forward is not a progress if we are facing the wrong direction”. Nigerians know that INEC spent 35 billion nairas ( 233 million dollars) of the tax-payers money to purchase the Direct Data Capturing machines should not be a waste investment. There is no doubt that the coming general elections will lay the foundation of a viable democracy in Nigeria.

The people now want to ensure a functional democratic government that ensure the will of the people and not one that forced the people to follow it. Nigerian eligible voters are targeting 70 millions people to be registered so that their voices will be represented in the next general elections. They want to avoid election rigging and possibly break the record of June 12. 1993 election which was adjudged the most freest and fairest election conducted in the history of Nigeria before it was annulled by the evil genius. The IBB annulled election cost the nation over 40 billion nairas. The large turn out show that this year general election will give us the bits of government we like, love and benefit from and takes away the stuff that slows us down and gets us down. Nigerians are now aware that their past corrupt leaders does not design and manage this country to bring wealth, health and happiness into the lives of the populace but to a selected few. We have all know that our government has become so large, expensive and repressive that it is no longer serving the people of this country.

The crop of emerging new responsible leaders after the April general elections will bring core values of honesty, tolerance, humility, religious unity, accountability and good governance to Nigeria. The aftermath of April general elections will surely bring a sense of peace and purpose to the people of Nigeria. All Nigerians will surely have a deep sign of a relief for new set of men and women of great discipline, intellectuals and capabilities capable of building a nation and lead us to what is best for the people. It is now time for a new set of statesmen, politicians with ideas, innovations and integrity as people must have based their choice on merit and not on party allegiance. Nigerians will be able to witness a functioning democracy that demands the involvement of the people. This is a time when Nigerians will see a new democratic republic based on principles of representative government, the rights of individuals to participate in a transparent political process and an electoral system that encourages participation. It is time when our political leaders will agree that having choices is beneficial under normal circumstances.

This year April election will design a good course for the history of our beloved country. It will surely help Nigerians to leave things that hold them back and prevent their progress. It is time to see a new Nigeria where government well-crafted information that change people’s minds will be the thing of the past. Nigerians are fed up of a country where the vice-president is being deprived of having access to his dying president, a country where all the citizens could not now the whereabout of their president for more than sixty days.  All Nigerians look for a new situation where people should never fear their government, and the government should fear its’ people. When Nigerians will now have a voice in the political issues, the ability and responsibility to help shape the public policy on a local and national level. A new trend when service learning in the schools will provide opportunity for young people to help in communities development. When the government would be more supported by the people it is supposed to support.

Finally, the right to vote is a fundamental democratic structure of Nigeria constitution and the people’s conventional way of influencing government. Voting allows you to have a voice at any level of government, especially in the areas that affect our daily life like taxes, electricity and water supply, security of lives and property ,roads, social security and health services. The on-going registration exercise is very important to get what we wish for our country and this will take us to a place where we want to be. It is now the desire of all Nigerians to get the best for this country, especially and more importantly in becoming happier, healthier, safer and wealthier individuals to normal standards. It is very important that people must register before they can vote. People should also remember that “bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote”. Every vote has significance and can make a difference.

Voting is your right. If you don`t vote, you have no right to grumble when an elected representative fumbles. We are all part of the whole system. We are all part of the whole problems. And definitely we should all be part of the solutions. Nigerians should express themselves with their votes. Every impression without expression leads to depression. The next general election is a test in which all Nigerians have to pass. Remember that without a test, there is no testimony. Failure is never the will of God. We have to let this coming elections bring  good testimonies to our life and our beloved country. We should choose our leaders wisely to pave way for Nigeria of our dreams. Our country is in urgent need of climbing to greater heights of excellence and progress with exemplary leaders with the possibilities of accountability, progressive and visionary governance. If all the targeted 70 millions registrable voters have the opportunity to register and vote the most  qualified candidates in all the general elections, we will surely have a new Nigeria come May 29, 2011.

Time to Vote for a New Nigeria

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 55 Second

(Codewit.com) -Every journey starts with the first small step. There is no doubt that this year general elections will definitely change the course of history of Nigeria for a new nation. Nigerians have learnt their lessons in a very hard way. Nigerians have come to realise that they are the solution to their problems. Suffering is how we react to events that happen to us. Most Nigerian problems are self-created.and now realise that their destiny is in their hands. This coming elections will reveal to all and sundry that relationship between citizens and the state is fundamental to democracy. The journey to a new Nigeria after fifty years of independence begins this year. This is the year that the catastrophes of past regimes will be turned to greatest opportunities by all eligible voters that cast their votes for a great change. I am foreseeing a decisive year in the history of this country when all Nigerians will decide to participate and usher in a government of the people by the people and for the people. This is going to be a year of true and functioning democracy where many voices expressing different or even contrary ideas and opinions will do it without fear or intimidation. This is the year Nigerians will detoxing their negative thoughts, forget the imbalances of the past and getting themselves into a positive frame of mind that will inspire them to come out en-masse and vote for a set of leaders that can re-write the history of Nigeria.
The game is up for all inept and dubious politicians . Now is the time for bad-belle, do-or-die  politicians to look for another jobs It is time for all political opportunists, thugs, criminals  to go back to the farms. Nigerians have realise that they have missed good things of life from those selfish and mischievous politicians and now uniting to bring back those missing beauties of democracy. This is the time to change from obscurity  to reality, and from disappointments to opportunities. This is the time we will all say goodbye to politics of hatred and deceit. Full participation in this coming general elections will give way for a free people to govern themselves, freedom of expression  and enjoy good governance and accountability. This year general elections will provide greatest avenue for greatest development in Nigeria.
Imagine a new Nigeria where its age long motto of “ Unity and Faith, Peace and Unity” to have practical meanings to all Nigerians. Where oneness, harmony, trust, understanding, reconciliation and development take its root in all regions. A country where there will be love, unity and peace among the Kanuris, the Fulanis, the Hausas, the Gbagyis,(Gwaris) the Tivs, the Nupes, the Yorubas, the Edos, the Urhobos, the Igbos, the Ijaws and the Ibibios. Where there is no love, unity, peace and progress can never exist. Where deep ethnic, regional and religion violence will no longer be a national issue.
Imagine a new Nigeria where the new emerging unpolluted or uncorrupted leaders with integrity and capabilities will proudly lead us to the path of functioning democracy, good governance and accountability. A leader who will be able to interpret the present situation of the country and offer credible strategies to resolve it and transform the country within shortest time.By the time we have a true leader who will be ready to lay down his life for the progress of the country, then you will know that we have been unfortunates with  those past leaders. New leaders who will dedicate all their effort to leave worthy legacies and footprints on the sand of time to be remembered and cherished forever. Where leaders will be servants of the people and the people will be their pay-masters. Leaders that realise that greatness is not property accumulated within shortest time but the services render for the good of others. Since, the British colonialists lowered the Union Jack and freed a land they have ruled for less than a century, the country have never enjoyed a credible leadership with good governance.
Imagine a new country where electricity and drinkable water supply will be undisrupted in twenty-four hours. This new development tonic will surely boost the national socio- economic development and encourage foreign investment in our country. This is possible in few months with a reliable leader and government. Achieving this our Guinness Book of Record as highest buyer of electric generating machine will be removed. Imagine a new Nigeria where there is free, competitive and qualitative education for all citizens. Where illiteracy and poverty level will be reduced drastically. Imagine a nation with reliable and efficient health services without any need to travel to abroad for medical check-up and treatment. A country where all local government councils will have health centres within their official site to all and sundry.
Imagine a new country where the Section 4 of the  Police Act.CAP 359 of the laws of the 1999 constitution which states that “The Police shall be employed for the prevention and detention of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the preservation of law and order, the protection of life and property and the due enforcement of all laws and regulations …” and not employed to collect bribe on the roads, aid criminals and dance to the tune of  politicians. A new country where the “vision” of Nigeria Police Force – “making the country safer and secured for the  attainment of national aspiration” and the “mission”which is “to deliver qualitative and efficient security and law enforcement services to the citizens of Nigeria” will be practically implemented.
Imagine the country with the largest crude oil producer and the second largest oil reserves in Africa will provide abundant fuel and gas for its citizens at very low price. Where queuing at the petrol stations to buy fuel and kerosine will be a taboo.Where all the gains of our God give oil and gas will be judiciously distributed to deserving regions and not to the banks of selfish and wicked so-called leaders and collaborators.
Imagine a country with modern, good and safe road and rail network services that  link the all the thirty-six states of federation and Abuja together. Every Nigeria has the right to travel, live and work in safety. We all have the right to walk, ride and drive on good and safe roads. A country where Road Safety Improvement Action Plan on young and old drivers, pedestrians, motorcyclists, occupant protection, behavioural counter-measures, speed, seat-belt, drunk-driven and impaired drivers with blue-print to be implemented in order to minimise accidents on our roads. A nation where expenditure on road safety should be used judiciously to reduce increasing number of Nigerians being killed daily and subsequent trauma felt by their families.
This is a clarion call for all eligible voters to come out en-masse for registration exercise so that they can be able to vote during the next general election. You just have to register before you an vote. With the present electoral commission headed by Prof. Jega, there is no doubt that there is power in our votes to influence the outcome of the election. Our votes this time around will give us a voice and effect the changes we have been looking from a new nation.Low turn out this time can give inept and dubious politicians and their party more opportunity to cling to power The country is fifty years old, but we are not destiny to be living in darkness, in abject poverty, irregular water and petrol supply with our God-given human and natural resources. There is need for a change. That change will only be possible this year with our votes. We must vote for the best candidate, even if he or she does not belong to our party. We must prefer meritocracy to mediocracy. This is the only way to have leaders that can achieve good governance and accountability. Together we can reclaim back our lost democracy and hope for brighter future with free, fair, competitive and peaceful elections.

The Importance of Voting in a Truly Democratic Society

0 0
Read Time:7 Minute, 19 Second

In a true democratic society, it is essential to ensure a government that follows the will of the people and not the one that force the people to follow it, that is, a “government of the people, by the people, and for the people” as said by Abraham Lincoln in his Gettysburg address which lasted a little over two minutes on November, 19, 1863. Democracy is not government of some people by some people and for some people as a frequent practise in some developing nations. Democracy is a nation ruled by its citizenry. The beauty of democracy is that the minority will have their say but the majority will have their way. Functioning democracy implies where the people approve to the government operating the nation. All eligible voters are given chance to select their leader through their right to vote and to be voted for. In a truly democratic society, the representative or candidate who have been elected are liable in many ways to the people who voted and elected them. They have to implement those pledges made during elections with much transparency, accountability and good governance.

The basic principles of a democratic government include; the rule of law that nobody and no authority is higher than the law of the land, all fundamental rights such as freedom of speech and expressions, freedom of religion and conscience, freedom of assembly and civil liberties are assured and guaranteed to all citizens in the country, citizens rights cannot be infringed upon by anybody. independence of the judiciary, separation of powers and check and balances of all the public authorities, transparency of the government to the citizens about its functions and programmes, periodic free and fair elections to be conducted by an independent electoral body, recognition that citizens have a right and a responsibility to play a part in government and in social community, a multiple political system with equality of opportunities, opinion, ideas and prospects that will benefit all the citizens and not only selected fews as seen in some developing countries of Africa.

Voting dates back to elections held in ancient Greece, ancient Rome and throughout the Medieval period. It is a right that, throughout history, our founding fathers have fought for and sacrificed everything to achieve. “One man.one vote” is the most fairest method to choose leaders in any democratic society. Voting is patriotic right to choose your representative government. A citizen’s vote is a secret ballot. Voting is the most important exercise a citizen will do as a responsible citizen of a democratic nation. In a functioning democracy, being able to vote allows citizens to express their political opinions by voting a particular policy or candidate that has your best interest in mind. By this, you can decide your very own future by opting a candidate who might speculate your own aspects and possibly those people who share the same opinion with you.

Voting is a right of all eligible voters in any country. It is seen as the normal or typical form of political activity and it remains the primary means of political participation. The goal of any voting system is to establish the intent of each individual voter and translate those intents into a final tally or reality. According to Abraham Lincoln; “No man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent” This further explains that in a truly democratic society, governments are instituted among qualified and responsible men who derive their just powers from the consent of the governed. Another ex-American president, Lyndon Johnson have this to say in support of Abraham Lincoln that “The right to vote is the most basic right, without which all others are meaningless”. Voting is the first duty of democracy. Government is based on citizens votes for representation. In a democracy, your vote is your voice and the act of standing up for what you believe. Voting helps to preserve our way of ife.

In a perfect democracy, voting is the opportunity to elect or re-elect government officials and allows you to have a voice at any level of government and the areas that affect the life of citizens. Voting helps to eliminate the threat of a tyrannical government.  A vote cast today have a way of having impact to the present and future generations that follow. The responsibility to be a good citizen, and citizenship requires voting during an election. Voting gives the population an equal opportunity completely blind of sex, race, origin, education in contributing to community development. This explains the argument that without freedom of information, our choices are distorted. Voting helps to shape public policy on a local and national level especially when you a well informed about the government activities. Voting for a candidate with little or no chance of winning or for the lesser of two evils is both a privilege and obligation in a democratic republic.

Voting is gathering of human experiences in determine the future of a particular nation. Voting in an election shows your commitment and care about your community, by this, you become engage with diverse people of the society and the activities of the nation in general. Voting is the best way to influence the nation in which we live. Your vote holds your state and national leaders responsible for the decisions they make. Voting gives true meaning to the immortal words of Abraham Lincoln that “You can fool some of the people all of the time and all the people some of the time, but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time”. Eligible and responsible voters always take their time, to read the parties programmes and agendas, study the candidates ideas, integrity, capabilities, personal records, their future plans and how they stand on public issues.

Moreover, it is always advisable to vote for credible people or candidates and not political parties as this determine the faith of the nation. It is the law of the nature that those who vote for a candidate for money, out of anger, ignorance, race, sex or ignorance will surely get what they voted for. The result is inept and corrupt leaders and politicians. The positive impact of  eligible voters  in electoral process make voting important. A country’s democracy and people’s choice depends on voting. So we should take the initiative to vote for someone that reflects our overall views.  Your vote affirms your rights as free citizens to elect your representative and take part in democracy.  The truth is that your vote count and it can make a difference every time you cast your vote. Without voting, definitely, there will be no democracy to talk about. Voting help to us to have new set of people representing us with fresh new ideas to help heal the damage that their predecessors have done.

Meanwhile, on the other hand a citizen that just decide not to vote without reasonable reason is a plain ignorance. Apathy to voting may be due to lack of willingness or illiteracy. Inaction does not breed change, but only worsen the situation. The citizens apathy or laziness to show up and make their votes count is frequently lead to country in a very vulnerable and perilous position due to incompetent and irresponsible leaders. If you don’t vote during an election, you are surely voting indirectly against democracy and making way for irresponsible leaders. By not voting, you give away your right to influence the government overall. According to Smithstein 1, if you decide not to vote, you are taking away the “…will of the majority that governs….,but replaces it with the will of the minority”. It is essential that registering and voting are really ways that we can control the way we live in a democratic dispensation. The sheer volume of non-voters simply destroy democratic process making it gradually slip away. Your only vote can make a difference because many local elections can be decided by just a single, solitary vote or handful of votes. If you don’t vote, it encourages bad officials. Voting is the foremost way to exhibit good citizenship and civil responsibility. People should get involved in elections and educated in all political measures. By this they become a good and responsible participatory citizens. We should always remember that some people sacrifice their lives to preserve our freedom and let us have this voting opportunity as our sacred right. True democracy demands the involvement of the people otherwise in absence of that there is no democracy.

Nigeria: Oyo State is not a battle ground

0 0
Read Time:6 Minute, 58 Second

The recent political imbroglio in Oyo State that caused the gruesome murder of the dismissed Chairman of the state National Union of Road Transport Workers, Alhaji Lateef Salako (aka Elewe-omo) and two other party men in a local government congress of the People Democratic Party calls for an urgent attention as the general elections draw nearer. Several people were said to be injured. Citizens now live in fear anytime they go out. News of kidnappings and killings are everywhere. The atmosphere is very tense especially in Ibadan. These bad-belle politicians result to violence in settling their disputes. They result to killing, burning and maiming in order to gain acess to peoples’ treasury. This sad incident displays immaturity, opportunism, babarism and moral indiscipline on the part of those politicians and their cohorts. Terminating another human soul to gain political power!. This is the greatest offence to humanity and God- the creator. You will surely agree with me that animals are even better than some of these so-called politicians when considering their nefarious behaviour. Consider any domestic animal around you-they show love and care to themselves and human beings, they can be used for inspiration, support and guidance. Animals don`t tell you lies and they have no hidden agenda like our politicians. Political parties are designed to perform certain credible roles of unity, stability and harmony in the society. The ultimate goal of participation in politics is to render service and ehance common good of the citizens.

The beauty of democracy is allowing the people to participate and not creating fear on the citizenry. Democracy should facilitate informal accommodation and solution of conflicts. What we are now witnessing in our society is the politics of hatred, revenge and deceit. To them, politics is now do-or-die affair. These set of thugs, touts and murderers have taken control of the State with AK 47 rifles, UTC cutlasses and other dangerous weapons. This has been making it difficult to discover leaders who have the will, the ability and the vision to provide environment in which people will feel relatively secured. All we have now are rogues, thugs, criminals, crooks, illiterates and fake politicians around the corridor of government institutions. It is not a curse. We can never get the best from these set of people. That is the end result of selecting or picking mediocrity to meritocracy. They only good at making problems, telling lies and making unfulfilled promises, exploiting taxpayer funds for frivolous personal expenses and employing tactics of deceit and blackmail. They never had anything in stock to deliver. In order to understand very well their failures, just go through the State yearly Budget details in the last ten years (or even the last year State Budget-2010 ) and see how much they have squandered without anything to show for it.

The pace-setter of all States has been turned to a battle ground where our elites are watching helplessly. They refuse to bear out their minds on a round table discussion with courtesy and friendliness to resolve this uncontrollable crisis. They do not bother to forget their festering grievances and admit those mistakes of the past and move on healing old wounds which is essential for future success. Our leaders have forgotten that loving each other is what gives meaning to human life. They refuse to believe that forgiveness is an act of great generosity. They have forgotten so quickly those iconic strongmen of politics of yesteryears. Where are they now with their accumulated wealth?. Great leaders does not kill to become great. Great leaders do not discredit democratic institutions, distort desire for peace and democratic progress. Great leader is always ready to give a hand to his fellow man. Great leaders make great sacrifices and ahcieve their greatness on the services they render for good of the citizens.

Oyo State have the God-given means – both human and material resources to achieve the onerous of actually restoring the state to a Pace-setter that its known for a very long time The state that is known for its reputation in the fields of rich culture, commerce, sports and education have been hijacked by dubious politicians that believe that the only way to settle their grievances is through violence, patronage and extortion. These set of so-called politicians have never appreciated the value of education, democratic principles, tolerance, accountability, friendliness, accomodation and respect for laws of the land. The state education system is on the brink of collapse. They have turn the state into rival armies of political thugs and criminals instead of concentrating on making use of the state natural resourses which are not well-tapped. What can you say of commerce in a state that cannot provide Bus-Transit Services to conquers distances and natural barriers? A victory of corruption and impunity has become order of the day. The last hope of every citizen- policemen are now politicians in uniform. The police have been pocketed and dance to the tune of these political leaders. The criminals have field day anytime they want to operate. The life and security of the people are no more guaranteed. Private security guides are now the order of the day for those who can afford it. Some of them even employ the services of thugs. They are now using government money to bribe, buying expensive gifts to canvass for votes. They are living fat and the entire masses are growing thinner and thinner like broom sticks. You don’t need to go far to see this in Oja’Oba market in Ibadan, Akesan market in Oyo, Oja Akangbe in Ogbomoso, Sango market in Saki, and Towobowo market in Igboora.

Enough is enough. Our elders cannot be enemies forever as we do not want them to pass this to their sons. It is much better to make way for the coming generation as one. With spirit of love and unity, working together, we can do more and more better. We have to reject those mischievous politicians with perpectual crisis, conflicts and disorder that can not lead us to the path of functioning democracy, good governance and accountability. This uncontrollable crisis is given much concern on the trust, integrity and credibility of our political elites. They should remember that “poor leadership in good times can be hidden, but poor leadership in bad times is a recipe for disaster”. It is very sad and dissaponting if our State Obas, chiefs, political elites, religious leaders and professionals can not find solutions to this political violence that discourages good-will people to contest and restricts the political space to thugs, criminals and persons of limited merits and capabilities. It is disheartening if in their time, Oyo State could not have a good governance with free, qualitative and functional education, good health services, food security, employments opportunities, adequate security to protect the lives and property of its citizenry, efficient public transportation system, undistrupted electricity supply, regular public tap-water and functioning street and traffic lights. Posterity will never forgive us if we fail to act now. It is collective effort and responsibility of all sons and daughters of Oyo State to unite and work to raise hope in making the best of the State. All eligible voters in the state should register and vote en-masse to the candidates with trust, integrity and credibility to serve the State better. That is only our weapon. That is only our voice. We should not back down. This is time for New Oyo State with a clear difference. We need a team of achievers and not deceivers, statesmen and not dubious politicians. Decisions are made by those who show up. It is more easy for these political brigandage and perpetrators if we don’t cast our votes and defent it. It is much better to exercise our political right this time around peacefully and secretly for a positive change. The truth will always prevail no matter whatever we are passing through now.. We should always remember the words of George Jean Nathan which says; “Bad officials are elected by good citizens who do not vote”.

If I were to be the new Nigeria Inspector General of Police By Adewale T Akande

0 0
Read Time:11 Minute, 22 Second

I will first thank the almighty God for making me to reach this highest level of my career and also thank the Presidency and the entire Nigerians for giving me this opportunity to serve as the 15th Inspector-General of Police of the most populous black nation of the world since the appointment of the first indigenous Inspector-General of Police in 1964 in person of late Mr.Louis Orok Edet. I am aware of the task ahead of me to be the I-G of a nation which characterized by diversities and contradictions arising from population heterogeneity, urbanization, industrialization and conflicting ideologies on religion, socio-political and economic sectors. A country that is seriously and urgently in demand of the minimum elements of democratic policing which include accountability, efficiency, equality and justice. The situation in Nigeria now is so serious that the conventional ways of doing things can no longer solve our problems judging the fact of the numerous police Inspectors General we have had since independence (fifty years ago) and the image, trust and reputation of the police which have been soiled by the “bad eggs”. I will like to re-write the history of Nigeria Police force by making self-sacrifice, take personal risks, not minding stepping on “bad toes”(as done by Nuhu Ribadu) and will be ready to lay down my life for the nation in order to create a new Nigerian Police force with patriotism, integrity, confidence and trust. Uniformed police officers are a visible part of every community. I will create a police force with attitudinal powers to relate with the people thereby making them to play important roles in sustenance of order, legality, development and democracy.

Meanwhile, going back to history, in 1829,Sir Robert Peel established the London Metropolitan Police Force with its headquarters at Scotland Yard on great mission of policing and securing compliance with existing laws and conformity with precepts of social order necessary in all societies for the preservation of order, safety and social relations. The establishment, organisation, control, command and management of the Nigeria Police Force are governed by a colonial legislation (Police Act. CAP 359 of the Laws of the federation of Nigeria 1990) and the 1999 constitution of Nigeria, section 4 of the Police Act provides that “The police shall be employed for the prevention and detention of crime, the apprehension of offenders, the preservation of law and order, the protection of life and property and the due enforcement of all laws and regulations with which they are charged and shall perform such military duties within and without Nigeria as may be required….” The vision of the Nigeria police is “making the country safer and secured for the attainment of national aspiration” and the mission is “to deliver qualitative and efficient security and law enforcement services to the citizens of Nigeria.” Police work involves a variety of tasks and responsibilities which involve a lot of self -discipline, patriotism, dedication and hard-work to prevent crime, manage crises and practice their skills. As rightly said by Chinua Achebe in (From the Trouble With Nigeria)-“Leaders are in the language of psychologists role models. People look up to them and copy their actions, behaviours and even mannerisms. Therefore, if a leader lacks discipline, the effect is apt to spread automatically down to the followers” Also one of the world most outstanding actors Clint Eastwood once said:“it takes tremendous discipline to control the influence, the power you have over other people’s lives”.

Frankly speaking, we have been witnessing a contrary motive of the establishing police force in the last two decades. It is not an exaggeration that there is widespread abuses and corruption in the force to the extend of acquired the reputation of the most corrupt public institution in the country. The inefficiency of the Police force regarding maintenance of law and order became obvious with the widespread kidnappings, institutionalised bribery, extra-judicial killings, unwarranted searches, recurrent waves of brutalities, election malpractices, torture, harassment and loss of personal liberties, frequent armed robbery involving the use of sophisticated weapons, and high casualty just recorded from the previous communal and ethno-religious conflicts that spread across the country. Most recently, the Human Rights Watch researcher, Eric Guttschuss in his recent research work on Nigeria police titled “Everyone is in the game “ levelled a shocking allegations that :”innocent people are regularly detained and a fee demanded for their release…the rank-and-file police officers are often forced to pay their senior officers a share of the money extort from the public…people who are assigned to lucrative posts such as roadblocks or working traffic are given monetary targets that they must meet and give back to their superiors…officers who did not meet those monetary targets, they would be punished with a transfer to a less lucrative post” .All these allegations will be looked into critically. My first agenda is to face squarely the issue of bribe and corruption among police officers. I will make a follow-up of what the Minister of Police Affairs ,Alhaji Adamu Wasiri said in Makurdi recently on the federal government consideration to increase the salaries and allowances of officers and men of the Nigerian Police and also to embark on massive facelift and rehabilitation of all police barracks and offices across the country. After this is in progress, I will make a live broadcast (in both radio and television) to announce abolishing of all road blocks and check points throughout the country and that no police officer must receive or extort from any motorist henceforth.

All police vehicles will now be used for detaining, patrolling and transporting instead of mounting an illegal road-block. Fines and any legal transaction of money involving public must be paid to the police accredited or designated banks with appropriate receipts. Any police office taking bribe either at police station or on the road will be summarily dismissed with his or her name and pictures appearing on national dailies, police websites and that person will never be eligible to be voted for in any federal or state government elections. I will seek the cooperation of all members of public and implore them to make necessary voice and photograph recording of any policeman in the act and send it with necessary details to the new Police Force Watch Box to be placed in all federal post offices throughout the country. Moreover, as crime prevention is a major concern in Nigeria, my second agenda is equipping the police force with modern technologies in sophisticated arms to match with any armed-robbery bandit in the world. I will make sure that only the specialists unit of the police are allowed to carry firearms. Provision will be made for non-lethal weaponry, particular for riot controls which include batons, rubber bullets, electroshock weapons, more handcuffs to restrain suspects, whistles, flash-lights, police notebooks and citations otherwise known as ticket-books. I will provide more new patrol vehicles to all stations and introduce the use of special motorcycles which will now be used to control potential public and escort duties-two police riders at a time. I will double our efforts in the use of specially trained dogs for detecting illegal drugs or substances and also in tracking down of criminals fleeing on foot. All these patrol vehicles will be marked with appropriate police logos, and well equipped with sirens and light-bars to aid in making others aware of police presence. Meanwhile, as modern police forces throughout the world make extensive use of radio communication equipment, this will be carried both in the person and installed on all police patrol vehicles .Effective crime and operational information management will be institutionalised with good storage and retrieval facilities. I will make it a point of duty or delegate my public relations officer to make press briefing every fortnightly and frequent publication of criminal statistics will be given to public every day. No Police officer should be on duty without walkie-talkie or handie talkie (two-way radio transceiver). Communications will be highly organised with wireless equipment while network of telephones extends to all police stations in the country.

This will help officers to coordinate their work, share information and get help quickly. I will change the current Police Emergency numbers (08032003913, 08061581938, 07057337653) to only three digit number like 055 or 777 to make people to remember and dial within a second. This number will be free of charge with twenty-four hours service to be manned by diligent operators. In order to achieve our goal of reducing crime rates with communication and information dissemination, I will liase with the presidency to make national identity card free and compulsory for all living souls in Nigeria within a limited time and at the same time inform the Federal Ministry of Communication to order accredited mobile telephones subscribers in Nigeria (Globacom, Etisalat, Multilinks, Starcomms, Zain, etc) to have authentic personal data of all their customers who bought telephone lines from them. Those customers who could not do so within three months will risk their line cut-off. To curb the waves of increasing crime in this country, everybody must be involved, everybody must have identity, including all foreigners to be issued with resident and working permit respectively. This method is now in use in developed and developing countries of the world. Apart from making the job of policing very easy for identification and investigation, it will serve the objectives which population census are meant for. The country needs to know the numbers of people catering for. Peoples identification will help in use for criminal background checks in persons of interest to be completed I matter of seconds, even, on all police patrol vehicles. Bureaucratically, in my strong effort to improve police manpower both in terms of quality and quantity, I will make all effort to build a disciplined, trusted and professional police force. This fourth agenda is to emphasis on in-service training and professional recruitment to make the police more accessible to the concern of the society under the law of the land. I will establish a non-partisan police board to manage the affairs of recruitments and promotions on strict merit, recognition and reward for outstanding performances and promotions. As a lover of sport, the will force will be given open recruitment for those outstanding Nigerian sportsmen and women. We will give them support to the greater heights as it was done in the olden good days. I will make sure that Police force soccer team features in the professional league division one and some of our outstanding youth soccer academy players will take the place of those “forty-something years” average-age Eagles sent to South Africa world –cup. Nigeria is the most blessed country with talents in Africa.

Lest I forget, after the short courses, I will start the national rotating of officers from state to state to reduce their vulnerability to corruption as the country’s general election will be taken place in few months. This new salary increment will attract qualified officers for forensic science laboratories which will be staffed with more experts and professionals in biology, pathology, physics, zoology, microscopy and photography. Concerted efforts will be make to rehabilitate and equipped (both in human and materials) all Police colleges in Orji River, Maiduguri, Kaduna, and Ikeja respectively. The same thing will be done to the Police Mobile Force Training School in Guzuo, south-western of Abuja, the Police Detective College at Enugu, the Police Dogs Service Training Centre and the Mounted Training Centre. My fifth agenda will be launching of an Independent Police Complaint Commission as we have in the United Kingdom to act as checks and balances (Ombudsman) to the activities of the Nigeria Police Force. This is a separate body or organisation outside the police force that will dedicate in investigating crimes committed by the police themselves. This body would be responsible for investigating circumstances involving police and civilians that resulted in serious injury, allegations of sexual assaults and death. This commission will receive vital information and tips from the general public on crime without fear, intimidation and anonymity if needed. This Independent Police Complaint Commission will only have access to the keys for all the Police Force Watch Boxes placed at all the government post-offices throughout the country. All people found with irregularities on information given will be prosecuted by the law court. Lastly, I will now increase the Police detectives to make up roughly 15-25 percentages of the police service personnel. I will assign the police detectives department to despatch out “plainclothes” officers to all states of federation to start now to investigate on crimes and election malpractices. Personally, I do not like the present black police uniform at all, as there is not time for changing now because of election, I will make sure this uniform is changed with the new inauguration of the next president in 2011. I will make sure that before I leave as the Inspector-General of Police, all living souls would have restored their confidence and trust in the Nigeria Police force again. All individuals will be treated fairly, with their rights respected making them sufficient to feel safe in their community and regard police as patriotic agent of government and a friend indeed. God bless Nigeria.

South Sudan: The Symbolism of Africa’s First Truly Independent Nation

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 4 Second

The recent independence referendum in South Sudan should be applauded by all who appreciate freedom and democracy, and by all who toil and struggle against the yoke of internal colonialism and its devastating consequences in much of Africa and beyond for its symbolism and precedent. For more than 400 years, Europeans besieged and plundered the African continent, carting away millions of African slaves to unknown lands where they were treated as domestic animals, toiling until they literarily withered to death.

With the commencement of the industrial age, the need for African slaves declined and was replaced by the need for raw materials and other natural resources to power the industrial growth. The focus of Europeans was subsequently redirected to exploiting and pillaging the abundant natural resources in Africa, and so was born the era of colonialism.  Thus on the 15th of November 1884 Europeans gathered in a conference in Berlin under the leadership of German Chancellor Otto von Bismarck where without any consultation or representation of any of the fiercely independent African ethnic nations partitioned the continent like a piece of cake and created “spheres of influence” amongst the Europeans solely for the purpose of exploiting the abundant natural resources in the continent.

The legacy of this arbitrary partitioning of Africa by Europeans  have  to date shackled  the continent in chains of endless conflicts, marginalisation, distrust, lack of development  and a proliferation of failed states.  Ironically, the chequered history of Europe which for centuries was littered with conflicts of identity and self determination culminating just 66 years ago in the bloodiest world war in human history, put Europeans in a better situation through their own experience to appreciate and anticipate the inherent dangers in arbitrarily merging disparate African ethnic nations into artificial colonial boundaries.

It was therefore an absolute act of bad faith by the Europeans to forcefully create artificial nations destined to fail. Some suggest that it was a deliberate design by the Europeans to guarantee unlimited access to the natural resources. Thus if as some suggest, the  plan and intent  by merging disparate ethnic nationalities was to create a situation of pervasive hatred, instability, civil strife and poverty in order to sustain access to the vital natural resources they have largely succeeded. Much of the history of post-colonial Africa has reflected this reality.  By the late 40’s and  50’s when the   de-colonisation era began, the colonialists made sure the artificial boundaries  could not be reversed thereby bequeathing  to most African nations a terrible burden of ethno-religious  contradictions and  strife for  which a huge cost continue to be paid.   It is thus against this backdrop that we must view and celebrate the symbolic independence of South Sudan which incidentally is the first African nation to draw its own boundaries and gain independence on those terms.

Just like the  decolonisation era which commenced in the  40’s and 50’s and subsequently swept through the rest of Africa, most  like Nigeria without any conflict, it is certain that this symbolic beginning in South Sudan will eventually lead to a wave of truly independent nations emerging from a deeply traumatised  continent. Like every pioneering sacrifice in history, South Sudan had to fight a long and bloody conflict to gain its independence, but now that the logic has been established with the support and consent of the international community, such conflicts will no longer be necessary for the nations that are sure to come after South Sudan in the journey to freedom.

The moral logic is clear enough. It makes no sense and perhaps qualifies as one of the most stupid acts of mankind to fight wars and kill in order to keep a people in a nation against their will. It ultimately defeats the very idea of democracy. If colonialism was wrong whose realisation led to the waves of decolonisation from the middle of the 20th century, how different is internal colonialism that has arrested the development and condemned various ethnic nations to brutal oppression and apartheid in imposed colonial boundaries?  Nations must and can only be built through persuasion- consent and the democratisation of self determination through referendums is the only legitimate route to that end.

It is in the interest of all to have a world free from conflicts, poverty and failed states which usually become a sanctuary for terrorists from whence they can launch deadly attacks including the increasing possibility of a nuclear strike. The Southern Sudanese solution which has begun the process of reversing the mistake of 1884 has presented the world a new model for attaining global peace; I hope the world will take it in a hurry.

419 In God’s House: Needed reforms In the Nigerian Church

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 51 Second

In 2007, a certain politician, Chief Okeke Ajayi sponsored by a prominent godfather contested elections as a gubernatorial candidate.  On the day of the elections hundreds of armed thugs in the payroll of the godfather stormed the various polling booths and snatched ballot boxes, in the ensuing violence more than ten people were killed. In some other polling locations considered too much of a strong hold for the opponent, voting materials as pre-arranged with INEC by the godfather did not arrive at all. The election was a total sham as most people couldn’t vote, and those that did had the ballot boxes snatched and stuffed.  But by  4 pm the next day, INEC announced the  results and declared Chief Okeke  Ajayi   the winner. Flanked by the Godfather and other supporters Chief Okeke Ajayi organised a press conference where he thanked his supporters and declared that his victory came from God because “God gives power.”

When his opponent cried foul and pointed out the massive fraud that ensued in the elections, he was quickly advised to accept the verdict and reminded that “power comes only from God.”  By the next Sunday, Chief Okeke Ajayi   was in church for a thanksgiving. His entourage was welcomed by a standing ovation and given specially prepared seats. During the sermon Chief Okeke Ajayi   repeatedly thanked God for giving him power, and the church pastor spent the rest of the service thanking God for the testimony of giving power to Chief Okeke Ajayi.

This narrative is typical of the fraud purportedly committed in the name and with the consent of God.  A politician, who rigged-steals election claims that God gave him power,   meaning  that God is involved in 419 by  being a facilitator of fraud. His church and pastor legitimises the fraudulent claim by making the same assertions in church and our own dear beloved God ends up a 419ner in Nigeria. This is the extent to which religion and the church in Nigeria has been bastardised. Little wonder, that  in spite of practically every street having either a church or a mosque,  the value systems  have virtually collapsed.  There is more hate, more wickedness, more corruption and more enslavement of the masses in Nigeria than anywhere else in the world.

Added to this is the lack of social responsibility associated with present day Nigerian churches since the advent and growth of Pentecostal churches.  Back in the 70’s the Catholic Church, Baptist church, Anglican Church and other conventional churches   managed schools and built hospitals that delivered high quality education and healthcare affordable by all. They also ran orphanages and organised numerous charities that gave help to the poor solely from the donations and tithes paid  in Church. That era of social responsibility central to the doctrine in the bible of helping the poor, the sick  and the  disposed  has  since  disappeared.

The  church in Nigeria is now a  business  centre  where  loads  of  material goods and  cash go into the church coffers  through  donations, tithes and cash for miracles  schemes  on a weekly basis with promises of financial bounties to those who part with handsome sums of money.  The monies raised  go into the private coffers and use of the church executives with the construction or purchase of palatial  residential  mansions  in the most expensive  areas of any major city for the church leader, the purchase of private jets for the use of the  church leaders and the construction  of very expensive profit making  elitist private schools  reserved only for the very rich to the exclusion of the poor and the families of the ordinary church members  who donate and pay their tithes in the church every week.

Whereas Pentecostal churches in faraway America and Europe raise money for numerous charities to help the sick and the poor in their home countries and in Africa and Asia, Nigerian Pentecostal churches are just as insensitive as the Nigerian government. There is hardly any charity or social programmes linked to the churches to help the poor in spite of the billions they make annually from hapless citizens and in spite of the unbelievable poverty in the nation. Churches and religious organisations in other parts of the world have always been the conscience of their nations, leading the campaign against corrupt and misgoverning regimes, in Nigeria, the churches are in bed with criminal leaders, celebrating 419 electoral victories in the name of God and practically praying for them to continue to hold sway over the enslaved masses.

The verdict therefore is that the Nigerian church has failed itself, failed God and failed the citizens they are supposed to serve.  There should therefore be critical reforms which will re-position the church in Nigeria to serve its true purpose as is consistent with the doctrine by disassociating with fraudulent politicians and leading the campaign for good governance,  preaching the values of love, honesty and hard work,  re-investing a significant amount  of what they make from donations and other sources in sponsoring charities dedicated to helping  the poor and  building schools, hospitals and other social institutions targeted specifically at the poor  and other disadvantaged persons.

These  reforms will bring back the values which represent  the true  purpose of God  as is evident in  the doctrine and the Nigerian church can only fulfil this  purpose when it returns to these core values.
