LAGOS, Nigeria (Codewit) — Iran’s foreign minister flew to Nigeria on Thursday to discuss an arms shipment that was seized by Nigerian officials last month and that diplomats have said could put Iran in breach of United Nations sanctions.
The foreign minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, has pledged his government’s cooperation with an investigation into the shipment of weapons, said the Nigerian foreign minister, Odein Ajumogobia. Nigeria’s secret service intercepted the shipment two weeks ago and found that it contained rockets and other explosives. The weapons were in containers that were labeled as construction materials and had been loaded in Iran by a local trader who did not appear on any sanctions list, a shipping group based in France, CMA CGM, has said.
“I had a productive meeting with the Iranian foreign minister this evening, and he has assured us of his government’s cooperation in our ongoing investigation regarding the arms shipment,†Mr. Ajumogobia said in a telephone interview.
Nigerian officials had said earlier that Iran’s ambassador had been summoned to discuss the weapons shipment.
Diplomats in New York said Iran would appear to be in breach of the sanctions approved by the United Nations Security Council, which forbids Iran from exporting any weapons directly or indirectly that were originally loaded on its territory. But the diplomats said it was difficult to assess the specifics about the shipment seized in Nigeria, because that country had not yet notified the Security Council’s Iran sanctions committee about the seizure.
A diplomat with access to intelligence on Iran said in New York that Mr. Mottaki had gone to Abuja, the Nigerian capital, to discuss the shipment and to secure permission to bring back to Tehran two Iranians connected with the shipment. The diplomat, who spoke anonymously under the rules of diplomacy, said the Iranians were at the Iranian Embassy in Abuja and that Tehran appeared reluctant to have them questioned by the Nigerian authorities.
Nigeria’s secret service said Wednesday that it had been monitoring the movement of the cargo before it entered Lagos in July and that there was no question that Nigeria had been the intended destination.
The weapons, which were shown to journalists in Lagos after the seizure, included 107-millimeter rockets, designed to attack static targets and used by armies to support infantry units. Security experts said the heavy rockets could have been intended for the Taliban in Afghanistan and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
Israeli news media reports, citing Israeli defense officials, have suggested that the weapons may have been destined for Hamas and that the Iranians may have been testing a new smuggling route. Israel’s Foreign Ministry has declined to comment.
The seizure heightened concerns about national security in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, months before elections that are expected to be fiercely contested. It also came weeks after car bombs killed at least 10 people near an independence day parade in Abuja on Oct. 1. Militants in the oil-producing Niger Delta claimed responsibility for the attacks. The Niger Delta rebels have been procuring weapons illegally for many years, although they have not been known to use anything as heavy as the arms seized in Lagos.

WOMEN’S WORLD CUP QUALIFYING Nigeria kept its record perfect of having qualified for every Women’s World Cup, wrapping up a berth at next year’s finals in Germany with a 5-1 win over Cameroon. The Super Falcons will be joined by controversial Equatorial Guinea, winner over host South Africa with a 3-1 overtime victory.
Nigeria was led by Ugochi Oparanozie, who scored twice in the first half, and Perpetua Nkwocha, whose second-half hat trick gave her 10 goals in four games.
Oil-rich Equatorial Guinea is accused of importing players and giving them citizenship to play for the national team.
After Ghana lost to Equatorial Guinea, the reigning African champion, its captain Florence Okoe accused Equatorial Guinea star Salimata Simpore and two other players of being men.
Simpore, who scored twice in overtime, is originally from Burkina Faso and has also been accused of having previously represented Ivory Coast

A former national youth leader of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Farouk Bibi Farouk, has x-rayed the nation’s multi-faceted problems and declared that only a character like former President Olusegun Obasanjo would be appropriate as its president after the 2011 general election.
In an interview in Abuja on Thursday, Alhaji Farouk, who is also the Director of the youth wing of the Ibrahim Babangida Presidential Campaign Organisation, declared that President Goodluck Jonathan would not be a good presidential material for the nation, describing him as a “chameleon†based on his inconsistency on the zoning arrangement in PDP.
He, however, tipped former President Babangida as the possible consensus candidate of the North and the eventual winner of the 2011 presidential election based on his past experience and capability to hold Nigeria together as a country to be respected among the comity of nations.
Said he: “I don’t think this country can be run again by a novice. When I say that, you can look around and see an example; a good leader that is stable, that has the capacity to hold this country together is still an essential ingredient in our nationhood.â€
According to him, “it was the same situation in 1999 when we all decided in the PDP to rally support for former President Olusegun Obasanjo, certainly not even because that we believed in his policies of development but because we knew at that point in time that the crises the nation was facing needed a stabilising factor like Obasanjo who had the experience and who could keep the country together.
“This country is being faced with stability problems now as we were in 1999, because of the nature of the politics of our elite, the security challenges and the level of poverty in the land.â€
Alhaji Farouk pointed out that former President Babangida possessed the qualities needed to address the multi-faceted problems within four years as the case was in 1999 when Obasanjo was unanimously picked to lead the nation.

(Codewit)Nigeria remains the top destination for Africa-bound flows, accounting for nearly half of remittances to the continent, a World Bank study has revealed.
In a statement signed by its Communications Associate, Bamidele Oladokun, in Abuja on Tuesday, the bank stated: “In absolute dollars, Nigeria is by far the top remittance recipient in Africa, accounting for an estimated 10 billion dollars in 2010, nearly half of all money sent to the continent. This year’s flows represent a slight increase over the previous year, when migrants sent home 9.6 billion dollars.â€}
Top recipients, it said, included Sudan with 3.2 billion dollars, Kenya, 1.8 billion dollars; Senegal, 1.2 billion dollars and South Africa, 1.0 billion dollars. Others are Uganda, 0.8 billion dollars; Lesotho, 0.5 billion dollars; Ethiopia, 387 million dollars; Mali, 385 million dollars and Togo, 302 million dollars.
The bank further remarked that remittance flows to sub-Saharan Africa will reach 21.5 billion dollars in 2010 after a small decrease in 2009 due to the global financial crisis. The study was carried out by Migration and Remittances Factbook 2011, a World Bank publication that tracks documented private transfers of funds and migratory patterns around the world.
“The book shows that Africa-bound flows fell by about four per cent between 2008 and 2009, marking the first decrease since 1995. We estimate that recovery will continue over the next two years, with remittance flows to the continent possibly reaching about 24 billion dollars by 2012,†it said.
The statement noted that worldwide, remittance flows were expected to reach 440 billion dollars by 2010, up from 416 billion dollars in 2009. The World Bank report estimated that flows to developing countries as a whole would rise further over the next two years, possibly exceeding 370 billion dollars by 2012.
“Remittances are a critical lifeline for families and entire communities across Africa, especially in the aftermath of the global crises,†it said. The statement added that there was pressing need to make it easier and cheaper to send and receive remittances in Africa. It added that the average cost of sending money to Africa is more than 10 per cent, the highest among all the regions.

Tonto Dike has made a reputable name for herself in the Nollywood industry and is still aiming higher. The beautiful Ikwere, Rivers State-born actress who got into the industry after emerging as the first runner-up in a reality TV show, ‘THE NEXT MOVIE STAR’ and who starred as the lead actress in Rush Hour, speaks on why she is hot and different in this chat with SANDRA OKAFOR
Briefly, tell us about your family and educational background.
My family is a big one! I lost my mother when I was three years old. My mother had five children, I am the third child and I have a step mum. She has two sons but not for my father though; she was married before she met my father. But as I said, it is a big family; we are seven children and two parents. My family is a very happy and healthy one and we are very good Christians. My parents and siblings are in Port Harcourt presently but I’m in Lagos. I went to a wonderful nursery and primary school in Port Harcourt, attended a federal government college and later went to Rivers State University of Technology, where I studied Petrochemical Engineering.
As a graduate of Petrochemical Engineering, did you have any formal training in acting before you decided to take it up as a career?
No! The only training I had in acting is from a reality TV show where we had professionals from all around the world who came to teach us how to act. They taught us the doctrine of acting, then later took a course on acting in Switzerland –on the Internet actually.
So you have always had the flair for acting? Oh yes! Since I was a kid, I used to do church plays and I have always been crazy about being an actress. Everybody who knows me knows acting is my life. I love it so much but I waited to see how the market is, how my colleagues rise and stay. I wanted to study the market very well before going into it and that is exactly what I did.
That means you got into Nollywood through the ‘Next Movie Star’ contest?
The contest was little or nothing to my career. It just gave me an insight of what I was going to face, though it exposed me to a lot of movie directors and I also worked on myself. I fought through to meet people and it was easy, because everybody thought I was good. So, it was easy for me to break into the market.
What is your assessment of Nollywood so far? What I can say is that Nollywood could be better. Our pay, movies and dressing could be better. I really hope for a very good future for Nollywood because I intend to stay in this industry for a very long time. I pray everyday that we get to identify our faults and rectify them. I know Nollywood will go really far because from assessment, it is the third biggest film industry aside Hollywood and Bollywood.
What was your expectation before you got into Nollywood?
Funny enough, I told a lot of people this story and they sounded, “Oh! She is too spiritual and all that but I actually saw it all coming. It is not a gift, it is because I am close to God, that is why he shows me things; he showed me all these, so it was Briefly, tell us about your family and educational background. It is not a gift, it is because I am close to God, that is why he shows me things; he showed me all these, so it was not a surprise when I got to this stage right from my first movie.
If you were to change anything in Nollywood, what would it be?
Well, I have a lot of things that I would have loved to change but for my career’s sake, I will just keep shut.
But there must be something you would want to change in the industry?
There are a lot of flaws that concern the industry, I would really say, that need to change but I am just going to reserve my comments on that.
How do you manage your male fans/admirers? First of all, I will say that I am not an out-going person, so I don’t really meet too many people. Thank God I only meet most people through phone and you can actually say what you want to say on phone although I don’t come out plain, saying “get the fuck off or something;†I just tell you off politely. It is either I tell you I have someone else or I say I am busy and when I keep saying that, you will obviously get tired. But most of the guys are my friends now.
Do you have friends in the industry? I can’t say I have friends in the industry, I just have colleagues. I have some male friends and just two female friends –Mercy Johnson and Uche Elendu.
You didn’t mention the names of your male friends.
Oh yeah! I have Mike Ezuruonye, Nonso Diobi, Mike Moris, Desmond Elliot, Kenneth Okonkwo, Uncle Pete is like a father, Uncle Larry is more than a friend and I have a lot more.
Are you saying you are more comfortable with the men in the industry?
I realised that I am more comfortable with the men, but it is not a conscious thing.
You are relatively new in the industry; do you sometimes get a cold reception from those you met in the industry?
I have never noticed that, it could happen and it might be happening but I have not noticed that.
Does that mean Nollywood is welcoming? I won’t say that, I’ll just say that I have never noticed any cold reception yet. Probably because I am very busy and focused.
What have got to say about the issue of sexual harassment before you get roles in the industry?
I think sexual harassment is by choice. Everybody gets harassed, even female bankers get harassed and nurses get harassed by doctors; it is everywhere and sleeping your way to the top is your choice. Basically, if you sleep your way up, that means in everything you want to do and achieve in life, you will sleep your way through and I don’t think it is necessary. So, harassment comes everyday even if you are the ugliest girl on earth. Men are men and men are dogs, but I have had less or no sexual harassment because I am a strict person.
You are strict in what sense? Generally, because I grew up being strict and I am very principled.
How do you relax in a very social city like Lagos? I relax in my house. I live in a three bed-room apartment, so I don’t get bored. I watch TV and read a lot of novels and science fiction books.
Aside the four corners of your house, how do you relax?
I have my clique; we all came from Port Harcourt to Lagos to make a living and everybody is almost successful right now. Sometimes, we try to meet somewhere, either at a restaurant or in someone’s house and we go clubbing occasionally.
Have you ever had any emotional feeling for anyone on set while acting love scenes?
No, I haven’t! Is it deliberate? First of all, it is deliberate and secondly, I am principled.
Does that mean the men are not attractive? Well, before I got into the industry, I actually mapped out what I wanted for myself. It is just like being in the same classroom with a person and you see him everyday; it is boring to date such a person. Most of them are now like brothers to me aside the fact that we kiss in the movies, but that is what we are paid to do.
When are you at your best? When I am challenged; when it seems like everybody thinks she can’t do it or why is it her, someone can do it better, then that is when I am really at my best because I want to prove a point.
Do you have dull moments? Yes, I do. I actually have mood swings and it is hard for me to come out of it but I’m trying.
Concerning your mood swings, have you ever had two extremes in one day?
I haven’t had two extremes in one day but when I am in my mood swing, my face is automatically out of look. You can’t even stare or walk up to me.
So you have never had a situation where you were very happy one minute and the next minute, you were really sad?
Yeah, I have. Sometime ago, I was really very happy because my elder sister in America just gave birth to a baby boy but five minutes later, I was like the saddest person on earth because I was robbed.
What do you think is responsible for such situation in the country?
A lot of people blame it on unemployment but that is ‘bullshit.’ There are so many things you could have done with your life other than stealing. I have a friend who started out selling pure water in Nigeria; today he has a bottling company in South Africa as we speak. So, I don’t think it is unemployment but some people are just lazy and they think stealing is a way of making quick cash.
Do you have a word of appreciation for your fans out there?
I just want t o say thank you very much. I really appreciate you all, God bless you as you celebrate me more. I pray for you always and I pray God will find a way to celebrate you too.

(Codewit) Twin megastars P-Square have just concluded a successful tour of the states & Canada, which saw them perform in Houston, LA, Minnesota, Oakland, Maryland, Toronto and New York. According to reports, tickets were sold out at each venue, and the Maryland show was almost cancelled due to it being filled to capacity!
As with any tour there will always be wild stories….
And the story goes that Peter the super dooper hot one – was swooped by girls in the crowd during a performance, they stripped him bare and tried to have sex with him right there and then! He was rescued by security but not before the girls made away with most of his clothing.
If the part about them wanting to have sex with him right there is true (which i SERIOUSLY doubt), did they think they could get away with it? I mean he IS hot!, and heaven knows in his presence i would get all flustered and shit…but how about doing what any self respecting groupie would…stalk the tour bus, and hope you get noticed!
On a brighter note, Peter goes on to describe the tour as being very successful; especially the group being approached by Drake to collaborate on a song. He goes on to say:
Aside the fact that all the shows were sold out, the passion shown by the fans, particularly the white girls, was incredible. I never knew the Americans love us that much. Surprisingly, they knew the lyrics of our songs and were singing along with us.
Dunno what is meant by “particularly the white girls But hey…go figure. They are expected to tour some more US cities next year.

The Save Nigeria Group Global (UK), the United Kingdom affiliate of Save Nigeria Group, wishes to thank all those who attended our event on Saturday, 6th November 2010: Project 2011: Towards a New Nigeria in South East London. Our special thanks goes to the keynote speakers Kayode Ogundamisi convener of the Nigeria Liberty Forum UK, and Mr. Mike Igini (Cross River State INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner). We’d also like to thank Peter Cunliffe- Jones AFP news editor and author, representatives of Buhari Campaign Organization, Goodluck Jonathan Campaign Organization and Team Ribadu (Representatives of Ribadu Campaign Organization).
Â
The event was well attended by both Nigerians and friends of Nigerians, and featured a passionate and informative presentation by Kayode Ogundamisi, who made many salient points on the fight against corruption, emphasizing that it takes very little effort for the citizen to contribute, for example, little acts such as researching land registry records to establish which Nigerian politicians or officials own property aboard. He also pointed out the benefits of the new media to anti corruption activists, observing that the many publishing houses were owned by the self same politicians that were accused of corruption, thus the use of social networking, web forums and emails to disseminate accounts from citizen journalists were a credible alternative to the traditional media.
Mike Igini made a valuable contribution to the event answering many of the burning questions Nigerians in London had about the electoral process, and how they could take part. In a keen interactive session with the audience he outlined the plans INEC has for ensuring the elections in 2011 were not just free and fair but were seen to be so. He mentioned several new techniques such as using all 10 fingers for the biometric scan as opposed to just the thumbprint and the plan to use video cameras in each polling station. He also emphasized the independence of INEC in terms of funding coming from the National Assembly, as opposed to the Presidency and tenure security being guaranteed by the Constitution. On election monitoring, INEC’s plans to include civil society in all phases of the election process from voter registration to party primaries to the elections themselves were extremely well received. He also outlined some of the problems being faced by INEC such as salary structure, a lack of funds for some of the programmes and all so the pernicious influence of contractors and interested parties in the running of INEC.
Several questions from the floor to the INEC representative concerned the personal integrity of some INEC Commissioners with the former Ekiti Commissioner as a point in case, and also a suggestion that political parties be asked to fund some of the costs of election monitoring. There were also fervent pleas for INEC to clarify the criteria by which NGO’s and individuals can participate in monitoring the electoral process.
The final segment involved giving the representatives of several aspiring presidential candidates 5 minutes to speak and then face questions from a panel consisting of Peter Cunliffe-Jones, Abby Ojo, Chinedu Vincent Akuta, Mike Igini and Kayode Ogundamisi. Henry Oriabure of Team Ribadu went first, followed by Charles Sylvester of Goodluck4Nigerians Movement and then Anthony Akabogu for the Buhari campaign. Each was given 5 minutes to represent their candidates and then faced questions from the floor. Such was the heat and level of questioning that the moderator was forced to step in and call a halt to proceedings. The key questions from the floor and panel revolved around the paucity of concrete policies or plans from each of the candidates with each representative merely emphasizing ‘track record’ or ‘personal integrity’. It was highlighted to each representative that Nigerians have to know what exactly each candidate plans to do upon taking office and also that once the primaries are over nothing short of a Presidential candidate debate both in Nigeria and the UK would satisfy prospective voters.
In conclusion the SNG UK again thanked all participants and emphasized that the key to changing Nigeria, was for all Nigerians to continue to affirm that they are Proud to Be Nigerian and stand up against corruption whether in the home at work or in public offices. It was also observed that it is not enough to simply sit down and wait for others to get involved, everyone has a part to play and can play a part. The event ended with a rousing rendition of the Nigerian National Anthem
Save Nigeria Group was formed in early 2010 by UK based Nigerian activist groups seeking to ensure that true democratic and accountable government takes hold at all levels in Nigeria
These groups affiliated SNG UK with Dr Tunde Bakare’s SNG Nigeria in a meeting in London on 20/07/2010
SNG UK is a coalition of the following groups; Champions For Nigeria, Arise Nigeria, Unity and Positive Change In Nigeria, Support Option A4 Group, GAIN Network Organization, Rally For Nigeria,Citizens For Change Global and Transform Nigeria Movement.
SNG UK is a non partisan, non tribal, non religious group dedicated to returning Nigeria to a truly democratic and competent system of government
Kayode Ogundamisi is the convener of Nigeria Liberty Forum, Mike Igini is the Cross Rivers State Commissioner for Nigeria’s Independent National Election Commission, Peter Cunliffe-Jones is former Nigeria correspondent and is currently news Editor for AFP and author of ‘My Nigeria: Five Decades of Independence’
The current spokesperson is Chinedu Vincent Akuta of Support Option A4. Spokespersons are voted from the Executive committee annually.
Other organizations who attended the meeting were Nigeria Arise Now, Better Nigeria International, Nigeria Disaster Emergency Fund

(Codewit)The much talked about movie ‘Anchor Baby’ Set to be premiered on 9th December and will be in the cinemas from 10th December has been generating comparism with earlier blockbuster movies ‘Ije’ and ‘Figurine’ amongst industry people.
A Nollywood movie producer who wishes to be anonymous said ‘despite the frontline actresses Omotola and Genevieve in ‘Ije’, ‘Anchor Baby’ may likely do better in the cinemas because the story line is stronger, it is unlike the everyday story you see in nollywood and Omoni Oboli was at her best in the movie’. Another actress opined saying ‘it is not all good movies that sell in Nigeria, the success of the movie is based on the market force and not all good movies have it. There is more to a movie than story and lead acts. The market is what’ll determine that’.
Shot in Brampton and Hamilton, Ontario Canada, ‘Anchor Baby’ the film that had its producer Lonzo Nzekwe chosen by the Reel World Film Festival as one of the 20 emerging film makers in Canada, has gone ahead to win two international awards. ‘Anchor Baby’ was first awarded as the best film of the year by Harlem International Film Festival in New York City and Omoni Oboli the Nigerian cast in the movie won her first international awards as best actress for her roles in ‘Anchor Baby also from Harlem International Film Festival. Although Ije won some international awards as well but not in high categories as ‘Anchor baby’.
Before and after its arrival in the cinema the fan base of Ije was less than 5000 on face book, right now the fan base of Anchorbaby on Facebook alone has grown to 8058 meaning the expectations for this movie is very high.
‘Anchor Baby’ tells the tale of a married illegal immigrant couple living in the US, Joyce and Paul Unanga. They have been ordered by the US immigration to leave the country by voluntary departure. They agree to leave; but only after Joyce who is 5months pregnant delivers her baby inside the US. This will guarantee automatic citizenship for their child. Ignoring the deportation order, the couple goes into hiding. Paul was later caught and deported while Joyce stayed back to struggle on her own to achieve their dream. The love, hope, pain and struggle that came with this decision is bound to stir up some emotion in you.
‘Anchor Baby’ had almost 40 actors with speaking roles and about 60 extras. The frontline actors in the film are Omoni Oboli, Sam Sarpong, Terri Oliver, Colin Paradine, Michael Scratch, Mark Cassius, Rachael Ancheril, Cyrus Faird, Santiago Lopera, and Chris Patterson.
With the huge publicity drive tailing the movie, people are beginning to conclude that ‘Anchor Baby’ may do better than Ije and Figurine at the Cinemas
