Finland: Nokia is battling against time

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 18 Second

Nokia is improving its product development, cutting 1,800 jobs in the process. In Helsinki the share price was up 6%, in New York 4%

The Finnish mobile phone giant Nokia’s problems at the top end of the smartphone market do not seem to be easing off, even though the company sold more smartphones in July-September than in any other quarter to date.

According to Strategy Analytics, the number of smartphones sold worldwide during the third quarter was 77 million, which is 78 per cent more than in the corresponding period a year ago.
In the comparative period, the sales of Nokia’s own smartphones increased by 61 per cent. Competition in the lucrative smartphone market is stiff, as numerous manufacturers keep bringing new models into the market.
However, Nokia CFO Timo Ihamuotila says that he is still optimistic.

”In the current quarter, Nokia will see the impact of its new models on the bottom line. The company’s present range of smartphones is much broader than the one we had in the two pervious quarters”, Ihamuotila notes.
Nokia commenced sales of its new smartphone, the N8, only at the end of September, after several months’ delay.

The sales of the slightly less expensive C7 model started two weeks ago, and in the course of the fourth quarter of 2010, Nokia is to introduce three new smartphones.
The main thing is that the gross profit margins on the N8 and C7 are a little better than those on Nokia’s devices on average, Ihamuotila estimates.
The gross profit margin is the difference between the net sales and the production costs excluding product development, sales, and marketing costs.

Nokia’s goal is very clear.
”We will have to get back into the touch-screen device market with large sales volumes”, Ihamuotila notes.

During the third quarter, a shortage of components disrupted particularly the sales of Nokia’s cheaper handsets.
The average sales price (ASP)bof Nokia’s devices was EUR 65, an improvement both on the previous year and the ptrevious quarter, albeit not a huge one.
This probably reflected the higher incidence of smartphones in the product mix, but it will have to be greater still before the company starts turning the corner and turning out profit figures like those boasted by Apple.

Considering the investors’ expectations, Nokia’s net sales figure for the third quarter was good, even though it showed a decline compared with the same period in 2009.
According to a survey conducted by the news agency Reuters among 36 analysts, the median forecast for Nokia’s non-IFRS operating profit without one-time items was EUR 605 million. In other words, Nokia exceeded their expectations by EUR 29 million.
The median of a list of numbers can be found by arranging all numbers from the lowest value to highest value and picking the middle one.

At the same time, the company’s share price was strengthened after Nokia announced that it plans to cut a total of 1,800 jobs worldwide, with Finland’s share of the losses likely to be as many as 850.

”The planned reductions are attributable to the streamlining of our product development, which in turn is linked with the new organisation adopted at the beginning of July, whereupon the Symbian product management and software development were combined”, says Juha Äkräs, Nokia’s Executive Vice President of Human Resources.
According to Äkräs, the reductions will affect all countries in which Nokia’s smartphones are being developed, while he was not willing to comment on precise figures here or elsewhere.

Nokia has major product development units in Denmark, Great Britain, the USA, and India.
In Äkräs’s view, it is clear that the fact that Nokia’s business operations are increasingly focusing on software and services will call for even more software know-how.
”If we are looking at the productivity of our product development, we will have a lot to do”, Äkräs notes.
In the third quarter, the R&D costs of Nokia’s Devices and Services unit amounted to EUR 706 million.

Nokia has to keep pedalling faster in the smartphone market to keep up with competitors.
This last quarter’s results revealed that the company’s overall global share of the smartphone market fell to 34% from 38% one year ago.
Apple and RIM (manufacturers of the Blackberry) also saw a decline in their market share, as the Android-powered phones continued to surge in the market.
The “Others” category was up from 26% to 31% on the year.

Even though the net sales value of Nokia’s smartphones rose by 16% year-on-year in Q3 2010, it was significant that the ASP for these phones declined by nearly 30%, to stand at EUR 136.
There is still much work for the team under new President and CEO Stephen Elop to do, and not a great deal of time in which to do it.

Finland: Security a Problem for Small Helsinki Shops

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 22 Second

Armed robberies of groceries and kiosks take place on a nearly weekly basis in Helsinki. Both shopkeepers and employees’ unions are looking for ways to put the brakes on this trend.

When Minna Vehma, a cashier at a Siwa food outlet shop, refused to sell beer to a female customer who seemed intoxicated, she became the target of a flood of abusive language and threats. This was in a neighbourhood shop, well before mid-day.

Vehma has been through worse. The shop has been robbed three times while she’s been on her shift.

“I’ve been threatened with a gun, that was the scariest. After something like that, I’ve been frightened, but it passes,” Minna says. The help she got from vocational healthcare services allowed her to deal with the fear.

Around 50 robberies a year

Disturbances and robberies are near-daily occurrences at groceries and kiosks. The most common targets are the smaller convenience outlets of chains such as Siwa, Alepa, K-kauppa and the R-kiosks. They take place around the clock.

“It’s sure that many employees are wondering at this very moment when it will happen to them. It causes quite a side effect, just the existence of that fear,” points out Erika Kähärä of the service sector employees’ union PAM.

A joint working groups set up by PAM and the Federation of Finnish Commerce is now looking at ways to improve the safety of retail workers.

By the end of November 2009, Helsinki police had registered 51 reports of robberies or attempted robberies at shops and kiosks. This year, that figure is down by about a quarter.

Guns, knives and pepper gs have all been used by robbers.

“We actively try to discourage robberies. We are trying to reduce the sums they can get away with and increase the chances that they will get caught,” says Harri Uusitalo, the chief of security for Suomen Lähikauppa, a company that owns several retail grocery chains.

Retailers want to cut down on the amount of cash kept on hand. Customers are increasingly being encouraged to use debit cards and many cash boxes are fitted with time delay mechanisms.

One cashier can be too risky

Many smaller shops have only a single employee working late in the evening. Contracting security company services and increasing evening staff are two measures many owners are now looking at.

Harri Uusitalo of Suomen Lähikauppa admits that increasing evening staff is an extra expense, but sometimes the best solution.

“We react to the security situation in each individual shop. We may add extra employees or implement various solutions including security personnel,” says Uusitalo.

“Money cannot be the determining factor when the safety of human beings is at stake,” sums up Erika Kähärä of the service sector employees’ union PAM.

Finland: Finnish Security Police to investigate possible US surveillance work in Finland

American Embassy in Sweden had 2,000 Swedes under surveillance

The Finnish Security Police (SUPO) says that it will be in contact with the US Embassy in Helsinki to ascertain the current state of security activities at the embassy.

The moves come after revelations that the American embassies in Norway and Sweden had kept hundreds of citizens of those countries under surveillance without the knowledge of the governments of those countries.

Sweden’s minister of Justice Beatrice Ask confirmed on Saturday that the US Embassy in Stockholm has the same kind of Surveillance Detection Unit (SDU), which it also has in Norway, Denmark, and Germany.
“I feel that this is very serious”, Ask said.
The Swedish Security Police (SÄPO) confirmed that an SDU has operated in Stockholm, but it did not say if it operated in the same way as the unit in Norway.
American Embassy officials in Stockholm have said that the US is ready to answer all questions put to it by the Swedish government on the SDU. The embassy insists that it only used legal means for information gathering.

Norway’s TV2 revealed last week that former employees of the Norwegian Security Police and Defence Forces had been paid by the Americans to spy on hundreds of Norwegians.
In Norway, the SDU took down the names of participants in demonstrations in violation of Norwegian law. The information was added to US records on terrorism.

SUPO has not known of the existence of a Surveillance Detection Unit at the US Embassy in Finland.
Helsingin Sanomat has learned that Finnish counter-surveillance officials do not believe that the Americans have engaged in the same kinds of operations as have taken place in Sweden and Norway, because the threat of terrorist acts against the embassy in Finland is considered to be considerably smaller than in other Nordic Countries.
“We have no indications that anything illegal would have taken place”, says Liinu Lehto-Seljavaara, head of communications at the Finnish Security Police. She adds that the boundary between illegal surveillance and legitimate security measures taken by a foreign embassy is a “line drawn in water”.
Finland’s Minister of the Interior Anne Holmlund (Nat. Coalition Party), who is responsible for issues of internal security, did not return a call from Helsingin Sanomat. There was also no comment from the US Embassy in Helsinki.

Nigeria: N10 billion scandal rocks Turai Yar’Adua’s cancer centre project

0 0
Read Time:4 Minute, 41 Second

When Hajia Turai Yar’adua organized a fundraising event for an International Cancer Centre (ICC) in July, 2009, many Nigerians saw a ray of hope, they looked at the near future when the number of Nigerians lost to cancer annually would be reduced to the barest minimum. To the average Nigerian, the then First Lady deserved all the support. Hajia Yar’Adua was lauded for conceiving the idea of the best cancer centre in the African continent. The centre is expected to provide services in the areas of cancer diagnosis, treatment and research. The projection for its initial capacity was put at 128 in patient beds and 20 terminally ill patients. At the end of the fund raising ceremony, well over N10 billion was realized. The ceremony attracted very important personalities in Nigeria as it was graced by people in the business and governmental circles. Alhaji Aminu Dantata emerged as the highest donor with a handsome donation of N 1.2 billion while his nephew, Aliko Dangote donated N 1 billion on behalf of the Dangote Foundation. Dr. Muazu Babangida Aliyu, the Governor of Niger State spoke on behalf of the Governors’ Forum and their contribution towards the project was N 720 million (an average of N 20 million from each of the 36 Governors). Fifteen members of the National Assembly also donated N 7.5 million.

Before the fund raising event, the former First Lady had warmed herself into the hearts of Nigerians as someone ready to help in fighting the cancer scourge in Nigeria. In December 2008, she inaugurated the National Cancer Walk with a two-kilometre walk. She walked from the Millennium Park to the Eagle Square along with some ministers, including the then acting minister of Health, Dr Hassan Lawal. Not a few people looked forward to the commencement of the First Lady’s dream project because people were becoming aware of the dangers associated with cancer by the day. Hajia Yar’Adua further gave cancer patients more hope with her speech at the cancer walk. She said “we have provided a waiting home for those who undergo cancer operations to enable them to receive the required chemotherapy. Some of them could not afford to wait for the very important therapy for some economic and social reasons, thereby making the surgery useless.” Not only was the proposed hospital expected to have facilities for support and treatment of cancer patients, it would also provide breast cancer screening done by clinical breast examinations and mammography, facilities for which are not evenly spread in the country Street Journal’s investigations revealed that Hadjia Turai Yar’Adua went as far as Vienna, Austria to raise funds for her project. It was also found out that she was received by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The body reportedly assured of partnership. The plans and projections of the project did a lot to raise the hope of Nigerians and expectations were high that at last, a top grade cancer centre would be available in the country. Fifteen months have gone after the fund raising, power has changed hands, Hadjia Yar’Adua is no longer in office and all there is to show for the proposed N 10 billion project is the parcel of land allotted as the site of the hospital and it is still as it was more than one year ago. Nothing has been built on it. No single block has been laid to signal the commencement of the programme. No one even knows whether the project has been abandoned or not. The only indicator that the International Cancer Centre could still see the light of the day was the project website, http://iccanigeria.org/index.htm . Investigations conducted by Street Journal revealed that the site was last updated around June, 2009 and presently, it is no longer functional. While some of Hajia Yar’Adua’s loyalists disclosed that some donors are yet to redeem their pledges, a source told Street Journal that “even if some of the donors have not redeemed their pledges, that is not enough reason to prevent the project from kicking off”. Meanwhile, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 100,000 new cases of cancer are reported in Nigeria each year. Already it is being said in some quarters that the project might end up not seeing the light of the day. Some have even opined that the funds realized would probably serve as Hajia Turai’s “severance benefits” since she had to leave the office of the First Lady unexpectedly and unceremoniously too. Those who saw the project as a white elephant project from the outset hinged their opinion on the fact that in Nigeria, pet projects embarked on by First Ladies only thrive while their husbands are in office. As soon as the tenure of the husband of the facilitator of any pet project lapses, the project fizzles out and nothing is ever heard of it again. Vivid examples include late Mariam Babangida’s Better Life for Rural Women, Maryam Abacha’s Family Support Programme and even the late Mrs. Obasanjo’s Child Care Trust. The fact that there is nothing on ground to show for the project after fifteen months has generated a lot of questions about genuineness of the former First Lady’s intentions as regards making life better for cancer patients. Some wonder why the funds realized could not be used to upgrade facilities in existing hospitals. Teaching hospitals in Ibadan, Enugu and Kano could have been allowed to ben

Angry Nigerian punches Obasanjo at Lagos airport

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 27 Second

For some time now, the security situation in Nigeria has been a source of worry for both the government and the governed. It assumed a new dimension yesterday when an unarmed man attacked former President Olusegun Obasanjo at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos. Eye witness accounts revealed to Streeet Journal that the attacker had earlier been denied entry into the Presidential wing with stern warning from the security operatives never to return to the area. Street Journal however gathered that the man carefully hid himself behind the fence of the car park attached to the presidential lounge.

And by the time former President Obasanjo’s chartered jet landed just a little after 9:00a.m, he moved straight into his Toyota Landcruiser. Two other vehicles carried his security aides. As the convoy of three vehicles tried to negotiate its way into Airport Road, towards the local wing of the airport, the man who had earlier been barred from entering the Presidential Wing emerged from his hiding place, ran towards the Jeep in the middle of the convoy, opened the door and forced himself into Chief Obasanjo’s vehicle. He dealt a number of punches before mobile policemen and Air Force personnel around came to salvage the situation. They were apparently alarmed by the sudden opening of the door and after they had succeeded in dragging the man out of the vehicle, he was severely beaten by the men on duty. The beating was however not enough to silence the man as he kept shouting “America is watching”.

Right after that, the security at the presidential wing became even more tightened. People and vehicles entering the lounge and car park were subjected to rigourous screening.

Nigeria ready to dethrone South Africa -AACT

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 20 Second

The 10th edition of the All Africa Challenge Trophy (AACT) will officially tee off today at the IBB Golf and Country Club, Abuja with Nigeria aiming to end South Africa’s long reign as the continent’s top women’s golfing nation.

South Africa have won all previous nine editions of the biennial tournament and are favourites yet again to triumph at the end of the championship, which was first held in Harare, Zimbabwe back in 1992.

“We are optimistic that we can dethrone South Africa,” Ngozi Osuhor, president of the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria said. “The South Africans are very good but we believe playing in Abuja will give us an advantage that might work in our favour.”

Flying Nigeria’s flag at this year’s AACT are the quartet of Faith Okoh-Baya, Rachael Danjuma, Amina Wilfred and Diana Okah, and they have been practising at the tournament’s venue for over a month.

“We have done all that we can to ensure that they prepare well and knowing the course well might just be an advantage for us,” Osuhor said.

Seventeen expected

As many as 17 countries are expected at the AACT with a couple of them already in Abuja for what is the most prestigious event for amateur women golfers in the continent.

Besides the hosts Nigeria, other countries expected to vie for top honours in Abuja include Angola, Botswana, Cote d’Ivoire, Gabon, Ghana and Malawi.

Also on the list are Togo, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Senegal, Swaziland, Sierra Leone and defending champions South Africa.

The Kenyan team, which has been in training for several weeks in Nairobi under the tutelage of top Kenyan professional Rose Naliaka, arrived on Saturday but without 12-year-old golf prodigy Naomi Walufa who picked up an injury.

Tanzania, another team expected for the AACT, left Dar es Salaam for Abuja yesterday. Their counterparts from Botswana also departed for Nigeria yesterday for the championship.

Botswana, will be at the AACT with 15-year-old Ouname Mhotsha who has been playing golf for seven years; the country is bidding to host the 2012 AACT competition and will be using the opportunity of being in Abuja to make their case.

“We have the experience and necessary infrastructure to host a tournament of this magnitude as we proved when we hosted a successful Zone VI tournament recently,” said Tiny Kgatlwane, president of the Botswana Ladies Golf Union.

The wife of the Nigerian president Patience Jonathan, and Dora Akunyili, the Minister of Information, are expected to attend the opening and closing ceremonies of the tournament. The All Africa Challenge Trophy is sponsored by the Nigerian Breweries Plc, Coca-Cola Nigeria, Sterling Bank, Eko Hotel among others.

Read Time:40 Second

By now it is crystal clear that our dashing, loving Sexiest Man in Nollywood 2009 is a man endowed with many talents.

Apart from acting, the dude seems to turn up some other tricks behind closed doors. Barely 3 years after he had a set of twins, Desmond Jr. and Denzel the wife again delivered another set, a boy and a girl this time, last month.

As happy as “Baba Ibeji” is about the bundles of joy the word making round now is that he is embarking on ‘operation stay off the bedroom’ probably for fear of hitting another double again.

The actor who is billed to tour Africa countries like Malawi and some other African countries soon on some stage-acting routine confirmed the gist, saying “I don hang my bo
