Read Time:2 Minute, 23 Second

Yenagoa — Family of the arrested leader of the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND),Henry Okah yesterday raised alarm over the invasion and arrest of the brother, Charles Okah and four others, including the son of the former Governor of Oyo State, Sola Ladoja by the men of the State Security Service (SSS) in Lagos.

According to the family, the investigators into the bomb explosion in Abuja , invaded the home of Charles Okah and arrested him, his son, Bolaebi Okah, his close friend,Sola Ladoja and one Felix Okufre after an alleged thorough beating and seizure of mobile telephones and laptops in the building.

LEADERSHIP gathered yesterday that when security operatives arrived the Lagos residence of the younger brother to Henry Okah in Apapa area of Lagos, they met the son of former governor Rasheed Ladoja and two other persons who had come to visit Charles’ son on his return from South Africa where he had gone for medical treatment following a recent motor accident.

Family sources told Leadership that the car driven to the house by Sola Ladoja is still parked outside the building and they are frantically searching for the contact number of the former governor to inform him of the plight of his son.

It was gathered that the men of the SSS, numbering about ten, stormed the home of Charles Okah at about 2pm on Friday and left at about 5pm.All the mobile phones, belonging to the wife, Charles Okah and three other visitors, were seized with some computers carted away.

While Mrs. Angela Okah has contacted some notable family members in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State to assist and find out the whereabouts of the arrested Charles Okah, she has called on the President to prevail on the SSS to allow her and her children have access to their husband and father.

Mrs. Angela Okah, while speaking yesterday with Leadership on telephone, said her fear and that of other members of the Okah family was the indiscriminate harassment and arrest, “since Charles and three of her friends were arrested, we don’t know where they are. I am worried and am calling on the SSS to let us have access to him.”

“The men came and seized all our international passports and mobile phones in the house.”

Leadership checks at Amassoma Community of Southern Ijaw Local Council area of Bayelsa State showed signs of tension among close relatives of the arrested Henry Okah and Charles Okah.

Attempts by Leadership to speak with some of them were rebuffed but they claimed the action of the SSS is a victimisation of the entire family,”if they are investigating Okah Henry, they should concentrate on that. Many of us have for a long time severed ties with Henry over his nefarious and secret activities. Let them not violate our fundermental human rights.

Nigeria: We must tackle power problem in Nigeria – Goodluck Jonathan

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 46 Second

Abuja — (Codewit.com) As part of efforts to deliver on its promises for the power sector, the federal government has said that it is committed to ensure that the mistakes made by past administrations will not be repeated in its quest to improve the sector.

The Minister of State for Power, Arc. Nuhu Somo Wya, made this known yesterday in Abuja at the Nordic countries energy delegates visit to Nigeria.

“Over the past few decades, successive governments have tried to improve the power supply. Trillions of naira have been spent, but the truth is that little has been achieved. The problems we face today are a testimony of the inadequacy of past policies and the strongest possible signal that Nigeria needs to adopt a radically different approach to finding solution,” Wya said.

Maintaining that the capital needed to improve the sector can only be realized by actualising a robust private sector driven system for the sector, the minister said “I want to make one thing absolutely clear, this government will not repeat the mistakes of the past, we have taken a new position related to the private sector.”

He said government alone cannot make the massive investments required to bring the power sector up to the level of performance, stressing that this calls for a conference to deliberate on the investment opportunities existing in the nation’s power sector.

Informing the delegates on the need to invest in the sector, the minister said,” We have asked you to come to this conference because we are committed to serving our citizens today, and especially tomorrow, by delivering our future power supplies through the full participation of the private sector. We will not make any new promises, but we will demonstrate that through our actions we will deliver.”

Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, Godknows Igali, who is the sole initiator of the Nordic energy investors’ first visit to Nigeria, said the conference is apt and timely on the grounds that Nigeria has a lot to learn from the Nordic countries who are also willing to invest in the sector.

US congressmen seek explanation from Facebook founder

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 14 Second

WASHINGTON — Two members of the US Congress have asked Facebook to explain how applications transmitted information about users to advertising and Web tracking companies in violation of the social network’s rules.

Representative Joe Barton, a Republican from Texas, and Representative Edward Markey, a Democrat from Massachusetts, asked Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg to reply to 18 questions about what they called a “privacy breach.”

Facebook on Monday acknowledged that some popular third-party applications had passed on user identification (UID) information but played down the privacy implications.

“Nevertheless, we are committed to ensuring that even the inadvertent passing of UIDs is prevented and all applications are in compliance with our policy,” Facebook engineer Mike Vernal said in a blog post.

“Our policy is very clear about protecting user data, ensuring that no one can access private user information without explicit user consent,” Vernal said. “We take strong measures to enforce this policy, including suspending and disabling applications that violate it.”

In their letter, Burton and Markey, co-chairmen of the House BiPartisan Privacy Caucus, said: “Given the number of current users, the rate at which that number grows worldwide, and the age range of Facebook users, combined with the amount and the nature of information these users place in Facebook’s trust, this series of breaches of consumer privacy is a cause for concern.”

They asked how many users were impacted, what information was transmitted to other parties and how many third-party applications were involved.

They also asked whether Facebook will “seek the deletion of its users’ personal information from data bases of the Internet or advertising companies who received it as a result of this series of privacy breaches?”

Andrew Noyes, a Facebook spokesman, said Facebook “is committed to safeguarding private data while letting people enjoy meaningful social experiences with their friends.

“As our privacy policy states, when a Facebook user connects with an application, the user ID is part of the information that the application receives,” he said.

“The suggestion that the passing of a user ID to an application, as described in Facebook’s privacy policy, constitutes a ‘breach’ is curious at best,” Noyes said.

The Wall Street Journal said applications were providing access to Facebook members’ names and, in some cases, their friends’ names, to companies that build detailed databases on people in order to track them online.

All of the 10 most popular applications on Facebook were transmitting unique user ID numbers to outside companies, it said. They include Zynga’s FarmVille, with 59 million users, Texas HoldEm Poker and FrontierVille.

Facebook is the world’s most popular social network with around 500 million users, but it has been dogged by complaints about privacy protection.

South Africa is under pressure, says Henry Okah’s lawyer

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 0 Second

Rudi Krause, lawyer to Henry Okah has told presiding judge, Hein Louw that he is ‘not bound’ to ensure ‘the interests of a community thousands of kilometres away from this court.’
Mr. Krause was responding to points raised by prosecution lawyer, Shaun Abrahams on Monday when he cross-examined Mr. Okah.
‘You have no onus to save face in the international community by refusing the applicant bail,’ Mr Krause said, urging the judge not to give in to ‘statements of ideology’ he attributed to the prosecution.

Mr. Krause said Mr. Okah should be granted bail because the South African state’s case is ‘a case subject to substantial and serious doubt.’ He also said Mr Okah is entitled to medical treatment ‘which he will not receive in prison.’

Mr. Krause also said based on ‘the conflicting statements’ issued by the Nigerian government, ‘little or no reliance can be placed on any evidence emanating from that part of the world.’
Mr. Krause cited the contents of an affidavit which the prosecution stated it received from the Nigerian government, saying the document was ‘sweeping, vague…to the extent that it is actually embarrassing…’

French police break fuel blockades in pensionstrike

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 48 Second

Police cleared protesters blockading French fuel depots on Wednesday as the government warned of economic damage from prolonged strikes against its plan to raise the retirement age from 60 to 62.

A third of France’s filling stations ran dry on Tuesday, the government said, while cars were set alight and police fired tear gas at rioters on the sidelines of protests that brought a million people into the street.

“If it is not stopped quickly, this disorder which is aimed at paralysing the country could have consequences for jobs by damaging the normal running of economic activity,” President Nicolas Sarkozy said in a statement Wednesday.

Workers in several key sectors have been on strike for a week to protest the pensions reform which the government says is essential to reduce France’s public deficit. Unions and political opponents say it penalises workers.

Sarkozy said he had ordered police to break the blockades at all fuel depots blocked by protests, refusing to back down on the reform which is scheduled to be voted on definitively by the Senate on Thursday.

Three depots were peacefully reopened overnight on Sarkozy’s orders, Interior Minister Brice Hortefeux said on Wednesday, but protesters have blockaded several more, police and AFP reporters said.

“We will continue to unblock these depots as much as necessary,” Hortefeux said. “We will not let the country be blockaded and we will not let the thugs go unpunished,” he added, referring to those arrested in street riots.

Ongoing disruption was forecast on the national railways with a third of TGV express trains cancelled, operator SNCF said.

At France’s main air hub, Roissy-Charles de Gaulle, unions announced blockades of access roads. Airport authorities said flights were normal on Wednesday morning but warned of disruptions later in the day.

A quarter of flights were cancelled at Paris’s second biggest airport, Orly.

Sarkozy’s reform would raise the standard retirement age from 60 to 62 and the full benefits threshold from 65 to 67.

Unions have proposed alternative ways to cut the deficit but say the government has refused to negotiate with them. They are to meet Thursday to decide their next action.

Business associations were anxious about the impact of drawn-out strikes.

“After three years of economic crisis, we do not have the means today to endure long strikes,” the head of the CGPME small and medium business association Jean-Francois Roubaud said on Europe 1 radio Tuesday.

Television news was dominated on Tuesday by scenes of clashes between riot police and youths in Lyon and suburbs of Paris, which Hortefeux blamed on a rogue minority of “thugs” who joined ongoing protests by high school pupils.

The minister, who heads a crisis cell to deal with the disruption, said police had arrested 1,423 “rioters” over the past week.

Hundreds of schools remained blockaded in the strike, the government and a schools union said, while youths torched another car in Lyon city centre, where riot police were deployed.

CNIR traffic info service counted a dozen roadblocks or go-slows on Wednesday morning after truckers joined in the strike action this week. Rubbish piled up in the streets of Marseille due to a strike by collectors.

A poll by BVA published Wednesday said 59 percent of the French supported a continuation of the strike even if the Senate passes the reform this week.

No Sex in this Relationship

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 54 Second

Hey guys, Mgbeks here!

Lately I’ve been pondering on this issue of sex in a relationship and why it is SO important to men. I keep having conversations with guys who insist that if their girls aren’t giving it up then she got to go. They say things like ‘body no be firewood o’ or ‘Even if I agreed to not wait with her till marriage, I would have a jump off on the side’. I’ve even heard things like ‘You have to test drive the car before you buy it’ and even worse…’If she isn’t giving it up, she will be NEXTED’.
I once had a conversation with a guy who had been in a 5 year relationship and when I asked the no sex question, he replied and told me that if his girlfriend had asked him to wait till marriage, they would not have lasted for 5 years.

Once again, I’m picking on you men because I can’t tell you that I’ve ever heard a female tell me that if there was no sex in a relationship, a guy would be instantly NEXTED. Honestly, I realize that body no be firewood etc etc but seriously guys, is sex the ultimate thing that makes or breaks a relationship?
Imagine if you met a woman who was everything that you wanted and more, would you really let her go because she wasn’t willing to hit the sheets with you?
What is the huge fuss over a maximum of 1 hour of pleasure…and please I’m cutting y’all some slack up in here ‘cos if we have to keep it 100, it probably wouldn’t even reach one hour. LOL, I’m just saying though…

I mean, the thing just tire me o. My ladies, are you feeling me on this or am I alone on this one?

My dudes, please feel free to comment o. I welcome all questions, comments and insults. Ha Ha! I’m just trying to get a general understanding of this right here.

Why is sex so important in a relationship?

Boko Haram:Nigeria Govt. deploys 2 combat helicopters in Maiduguri

0 0
Read Time:55 Second

In its determination to address the security situation in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, where 20 lives were lost due to re-surgence of the Boko Haram sect, the Federal Government has sent two combat helicopters that will complement the efforts of the police and the military to finally put an end to the sporadic killings in the state.

The two helicopters, which arrived on Tuesday at about 1:00 p.m., came 10 minutes after the official distribution of 40 Hilux/pick-up patrol vehicles to the military task force, tagged Operation Mesa (Python), by the state government.

Flagging off the distribution at the Government House, Maiduguri, before the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General Azubuike Ihejirika, among other top military officers, Governor Ali Modu Sheriff stated that  it was unfortunate that Borno, which was known as “The Home of Peace”,  was turning into a crisis proned area due to the activities of some people, who called themselves Boko Haram sect.

He, however, vowed that his administration would do everything possible to deal with any criminals in the state.

Dele Giwa: Case against IBB not closed, says Fawehinmi

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 43 Second

Lagos—Mohammmed Fawehinmi, son of the late legal icon Chief Gani Fawehinmi, has vowed that the case against former military President, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida, over the death of the late founding Editor of Newswatch Magazine, Mr. Dele Giwa, would not be closed until he faces prosecution.

This comes as prominent Nigerians, including legal icon, Professor Itsey Sagay (SAN) and Professor Pat Utomi, joined the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, to call for the reopening of investigation on the murder of Giwa in October 19, 1986.

Fawehinmi made the remark in Lagos, yesterday, at a rally organised by the anti-Babangida Coalition, ABC, which was held as part of activities to mark the 24 anniversary of the death of the frontline journalist.

Leaders of the group also declared that Babangida was not qualified to aspire to the office of the President of Nigeria.

The group further declared in a leaflet widely circulated at the rally that: “To us, all other aspirants/candidates can aspire to lead us, but not the evil genius, IBB.”

In his own remarks at the rally, the Director of Mobilisation of the group, Mr. Wale Balogun, threatened that members of the coalition were prepared to engage in armed insurrection if Babangida emerged President in 2011.

‘If he becomes President…’

He said: “If Babangida should become President in Nigeria next year, we would relocate to the bush and fight him to the end.”

He further warned all political parties in the country against adopting or allowing Babangida to emerge as the Presidential candidate of any of them.

Also speaking at the rally, Mrs Aboaba, sister of the late Newswatch Magazine Editor, called him unprintable names on the occasion and urged Nigerians to reject him totally.

In his comments at the occasion, a Lagos-based activist and member of the coalition, Mr. Adeola Soetan, presented a book which he claimed contained evidence that Babangida’s regime murdered the late journalist.

Comrade Ibuchuwku Ezike, Executive Director, Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, said: “We were among the victims of Baban-gida’s dictatorship. He raided our office, detained some of us and so we do not want him the second time.”

He further recalled that Babangida had the opportunity of clearing his name over Giwa’s death at Oputa Panel that was set up by the civilian administration of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, but that he refused to do so.

The peoples’ court

Ezike said: “Instead, he went to court and got and injunction that stopped the panel from investigating him. It was an opportunity for him to come and deny all the allegations against him by the Nigerian people.

“He never went there. Now, here is the court of the people. What we’re holding today is the court of the people. In 1993, it was not his will to leave the seat of power, but we organised and chased him out of power. That is what we’re going to do again to ensure that he does not come to rule Nigeria a second time.”

In her own speech at the event, Dr Joe Okei-Odumakin, the CD President, said: “The purpose of the rally was to remind the people that 24 years ago Dele Giwa was killed and above all, a new dimension was introduced in eliminating perceived political enemies.

“We have gathered here today to say enough of impunity.”

We cannot be asking for peace when there is no justice. We have to ensure that there is justice, fairness and equity. We have to ensure that all those who have evaded justice like IBB should be brought to book.

Meanwhile, the NUJ and other prominent Nigerians yesterday called for re-opening of investigation into the brutal murder of the former Newswatch editor, even as Lagos-based journalist, Mr. Richard Akinola, in conjunction with Lagos State chapter of the NUJ, presented a book, “Murder of Dele Giwa: The answered Question,” in honour of the late journalist.

The Chairman, NUJ Lagos Chapter, Mr Wahaab Oba, in his address at the ceremony, said “the time is now for the authorities to find out those behind the bomb that killed Dele Giwa 24 years ago. This will, indeed, remove the act of impunity gradually creeping into our society.”

Oba said, when Giwa was murdered 24 years ago, hardly did Nigerians, especially journalists, realized that such killing of journalists would continue, noting that several journalists had been killed in dastardly manner since that time, with no clue on the perpetrators.

In his own remark, Professor Sagay, SAN, said to ensure that the political machineries of the nation are put in the hands of the citizens, Nigerians must struggle in ensuring that the vote of every Nigerian count in the forthcoming elections.

Sagay said “ the big challenge before us all is for us to ensure that issue of impunity is curtailed in the country. We would have to task ourselves and see whether we would able to tackle election impunity. We would need to see whether election impunity will not raise its ugly head again in the 2011 elections. We cannot sustain it, it shouldn’t happen again.”

Governor of Kano State, Mallam Ibrahim Shekarau who was represented by his Information commissioner, Barrister Haruna Issa Dederi, said that the media should not be intimidated in creating an enviable country, while charging the media to expose whoever is against the progress of this country and protect those that are doing good to the society.

Professor Pat Utomi, who gave a short lecture, said, “Our country has witnessed progressive degeneration of values to the point of collapse of culture. In this collapse, he journey to the free rein of impunity has been among the more dislocating of our capacity to ensure the freedom of citizens that propel progress.”

He noted that checks and balances have been eroded, which affected the rule of law. “We saw some of it in the 1960’s in the battle for political hegemony in the use of local authority police against opponents.”

While noting that impunity breads uncertainty, he admitted that “impunity has cost Nigeria dearly in terms of investment decisions and economic growth.” He therefore called on the media to braze u for the challenge ahead to break the rank of those who want “ a free rein of impunity.”

At the ceremony, keys to houses were presented by the Lagos state government to the widows of Edo Ugbagwu of the Nation and Bayo Ohu of the Guardians murdered by unknown assassins in Lagos, while cash were presented to them by Mr Akinnola as part of his gesture to cushion the hardship of the widows.

Analysts cautious over Nigeria market rebound

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 56 Second

Investors at the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) have been advised to tread cautiously, as market stability remains uncertain.

Detola Olukorede, head, equity research team at Investment Option, a portfolio management company, said that investors should do “analytic trading instead of speculative trading.”

Mr. Olukorede said that as the market is currently witnessing unstable rebound, “it is advisable to buy when stocks are undervalued, and sell the moment they are overvalued.” Meanwhile, the rebound witnessed at the NSE two weeks ago plunged on Tuesday. The Exchange’s market capitalisation lost N17 billion on Monday’s figure of N6.194 trillion, to close at N6.177 trillion, a 0.27 percent decrease.

The All-Share Index was also down by 0.27 percent, shedding 68.18 units from the 25,278.23 basis points recorded on Monday, to close yesterday at 25,210.05 basis points. A total of 30 stocks appreciated in price on Tuesday, while 28 stocks depreciated.

Banks lead

Commenting on yesterday’s trading, finance analysts at Proshare Nigeria Limited, an investment advisory firm, said the stock market recorded losses because of the activities of some profit takers.

“Equity market records red position, as profiteering sets in on the advantage of weak bargain position,” they said, adding that investors should do cautious trading.

The banking subsector was the most active on Tuesday, leading market transaction with 217.45 million units valued at N1.92 billion, as against the 180.02 million units valued at N1.59 billion recorded on Monday.

The volume recorded in the sector was driven by transaction in the shares of First Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank, FinBank, and United Bank for Africa (UBA). The total volume of 129.75 million units, valued at N1.55 billion, traded in the shares of the four stocks accounted for 35.90 percent of the entire market volume.

Approved Bonds

Meanwhile, the Stock Exchange, in a statement signed by its spokesperson, Sola Oni, on Tuesday, said the NSE’s Council, through its Quotation Committee, approved applications for listing worth N38.6 billion for three companies.

The council endorsed UBA Plc’s application for approval/listing for subscription of N20 billion Fixed Rate Subordinate Unsecured Notes (Series 1) due 2017 at N1000. The issue is under a N400 billion Debt Issuance Programme of the bank. The joint stockbrokers to the issue are Afrinvest (West Africa) Limited and UBA Stockbrokers Limited, while the joint Issuing Houses/Book Runners are UBA Capital Limited, Stanbic IBTC Bank Plc, BGL Plc, and Greenwich Trust Limited.

The NSE approved the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) Microfinance Bank Plc’s application for listing by Introduction of 2.286 billion Ordinary Shares of 50 kobo each at N1.50 per share. The bank was established in 1993 as NPF Community Bank Limited and became a public limited company in 2006.

“In 2008, it had earlier recorded a successful Private Placement/Rights Issue. It was introduced by Lead Capital Securities Limited,” the statement said.

NEM Insurance Plc’s application for approval for acquisition of Lombart Insurance Company Limited and listing on the Exchange of resultant 303.508 million Ordinary Shares of 50 kobo each was also endorsed. The listing was introduced by Marinpex Finance and Investment Company Limited.

“The ongoing request for capital raising is an attestation to the fact that companies would continue to take advantage of opportunities in the Nigerian capital market to expand their operations,” the Exchange said.
