Pensioners Shut Down Delta Steel Company

PRODUCTION activities at the Delta Steel Company (DSC), Ovwian-Aladja in Delta State, have been crippled, following the siege laid to the company by sacked workers since March 23 over non-payment of their pensions by the Federal Government.

Delta State Governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan, reportedly waded into the matter after the workers stormed Government House annex in Warri to make known their grievances, but the pensioners who have occupied the premises for about a week now, refused to accept any plea, insisting on the payment of their entitlements.

Governor Uduaghan was a former employee of the company but after listening to him, the pensioners told him that the only thing he could do for them was to use his position as governor of the state to talk to the appropriate quarters to pay their entitlements. They said that telling them to call off the protest was asking for the impossible.

It was gathered that Governor Uduaghan was already talking to some persons in Abuja over the matter, but the outcome was not known as at press time.

The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Ovwian-Aladja Police Station and his men were said to be having a running battle keeping the angry pensioners in check. The intervention…
