As representatives of various countries collect what world leaders call the most prestigious public service awards on the globe, the Minister of FCT, Bala Mohammed, and the Managing Director of Galaxy Backbone, Mr. Gerald Ilukwe, have said the company reached the same height through the transformation agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Receiving the award in Manama, the duo said the two awards won by Galaxy Backbone and Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration lend strength and credibility to the global appeal of transformational governance driven by information and communications technologies.

The president, Bala said, appointed a minister of communications technology as a result of his belief in driving governance with electronic platform. “Galaxy Backbone is blazing the trail in the sector and they have all the support of the ministries and the FCT. The president's transformation is driven by e-governance”, he added.

Bala said “I am happy as the award has brought my country on the global map of excellence, for an organisation like the UN to recognise the work of not one, but two organisations in Nigeria, shows that transformation is a global phenomenon and that it is working and that we are providing services to the people, we are humbled and are moved to do more for Nigerians. There are key performance indicators in Nigeria and all ministers are called to render account to Nigerians and you can see the exuding influence of transformation as we are seeing here today”.

According to the Galaxy Backbone boss, "the awards came from the most unexpected quarter, it was a very good feeling standing before world leaders to collect this prestigious award, we are humbled by it, though we never work for awards, my team just does its job and here we are being declared the best."

Nigeria was declared the overall winner in the United Nations award in promoting whole of government approaches in the information age with her 1-GOV.net initiative, conceived and deployed by Galaxy Backbone, a federal government company integrating government agencies, ministries and parastatals, using its information technology platforms.

The country was also named the second place winner, coming next to South Africa in improving the delivery of public services category with her mobile integrated primary health care service delivery 'Mailafiya', an initiative of the FCT Administration.

The presentation of the awards to winners drawn from across the world brought to an end the 2013 edition of the UN Public Service Forum and Awards in Manama, Bahrain, the first country to host the event in the Middle East region. The award is usually held in New York, USA.
