Publish What You Pay-Nigeria (PWYP-Nigeria) has lauded the appointment of her National Coordinator, Mrs. Faith Nwadishi, as Member of the international Board on Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI).
The EITI International Board, chaired by a former member of the British House of Commons, Clair Short, is the key decision making body of the global Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative operating in about 45 countries, including Nigeria.
The EITI started in 2002 and presently has over 45 countries who have signed onto it. NEITI is a sub-set of the international EITI and since March, 2011, Nigeria has been a compliant country.
According to a statement by the group’s Programme Officer, Moses Oluwaseyi “It is indeed a new dawn in the history of PWYP-Nigeria, civil society community in Nigeria, Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI), and a big plus for Nigeria as a country.
It commended the president, NEITI, PWYP Nigeria, the civil society community and the citizens of Nigeria on the appointment.
PWYP-Nigeria however called for the full support of the government, civil society and all stakeholders, in order to ensure success at the EITI adding that the appointment lays credence to the importance of Nigeria’s role in the global initiative.
It noted that “Nwadishi’s wealth of experience and knowledge on the issues of the extractive sector, representing Civil Society on the National Stakeholders Working Group (NSWG) also known as the board of NEITI, National Coordinator PWYP-Nigeria, will no doubt make the country proud in this new position which will be ratified at the 6th Global Conference of the EITI holding in Sydney, Australia, later this month”.
PWYP-Nigeria is a coalition of 236 member non-governmental organisations spread across the six geo-political zones of the country and a member of the global PWYP that is dedicated to promoting transparency and accountability in the entire value chain of the extractive sector. The Coalition supports the implementation of the global EITI to which Nigeria is an implementing and compliant country with a local brand – NEITI.
