THE recent closure of the open drug market in Kano metropolis by Governor Rabiu Kwakwanso has received the backing of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, even as the state government and drug dealers in the state continue to lock horns over the closure.
Applauding the closure, Director General, NAFDAC, Dr. Paul Orhii described the renewed fight against counterfeit drugs and other unwholesome regulated products in the state as commendable.
Orhii who had last year led a team of top NAFDAC officials to Kano to destroy N600 million worth of the fake drugs seized by the state government maintained that the closure of the market was irreversible.
He reiterated the determination of the Federal Task Force on counterfeit drugs (under NAFDAC) and the Kano State Government to wipe out fake drugs from circulation.
In a statement signed by the Agency’s Acting Director (Special Duties), Mr. Abubakar Jimoh, the DG disclosed that NAFDAC was already collaborating with Kano State Government, Pharmacists Council of Nigeria, PCN, Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria, PSN, and other stakeholders to ensure that quality and registered medicines are sold only in approved and appropriate environment rather than the open market.
The Director General passionately appealed to other State Governors to emulate the example of Kwakwanso in order to protect and promote the health of the people, assuring that NAFDAC has taken stern measures to ensure only genuine people deal on drugs in approved premises.
As concerted efforts was being made to dismantle the open drug markets nationwide, Orhii elaborated, NAFDAC is working closely with its parent Ministry, State governments and organised private sector to provide credible alternative Drug distribution outlets in various parts of the country in order to eradicate the current uncoordinated drug distribution system.
