The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) has said it will soon begin a structural integrity test on all ongoing and newly-completed buildings in Onitsha and its environs.

The Director-General of the organisation, Dr. Joseph Odumodu, announced the plan when he led the agency’s directors on an inspection tour of collapsed buildings in Onitsha, Anambra State yesterday.

Odumodu noted that after the test, which would be done in collaboration with the state government, buildings that failed the test would be demolished.

“Something is wrong somewhere; why do buildings carrying no load collapse.

“People need to know the quality of materials to buy, where to buy them and the amount of material mix needed for each application and type of structure.

“So, I believe there is need for a lot of sensitisation for everybody since it might not be easy for the 1,400 staff of SON to police everywhere in the country,’’ he said.
The director general said three collapsed buildings in a city in just three weeks “is an epidemic, which if allowed to continue will be catastrophic’’.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that three high-rise buildings collapsed in Onitsha in three weeks, killing six people and injuring many others.
