“We are the first luxury hotel provider in Lagos. We are the only five-star deluxe brand at this moment in time. We are miles ahead of the competition. In terms of the product, we are unmatched at this moment,” stated the director of sales and marketing of InterContinental Hotel Lagos, Krishna Kumar, while chatting with this writer recently. There are many reasons why  Kumar would make such bold claims including modern styling and the latest in technology. Another is the breathtakingview from different parts of the hotel.

Regardless of the day of the week, an elevated view of the Five Cowrie creek that runs between Victoria Island and Ikoyi in Lagos is a fascinating sight; different shapes and sizes of boats going at different speeds, jetskis bouncing across the surface and more often than not, a beautiful sunset.

The creek is one of many sights that can be seen from the rooms at the InterContinental Hotel Lagos when you draw the curtains. Through the large windows of the newest world class hotel in Nigeria, other imposing structures, the Ozumba Mbadiwe Avenue as well as the Lagos Lagoon are all part of a captivating picture.

Space and perspective are both big components of the Intercontinental. The 23-storey building is one of the tallest structures in Nigeria and the tallest hotel in West Africa. Rooms are from the sixth floor so all 358 rooms get the panoramic view.

The standard rooms are some of the largest in Africa and the see-through glass that opens up the bathroom further helps the illusion of space. The window transforms to a huge mirror at night and also helps the idea of space when the curtains are apart.

Still on space and perspective, the hotel has four large elevators. Each can take about 20 people. Three of the four also offer panoramic views from the opposite direction. Victoria Island and the sea are visible, this time from a capsule moving vertically. The fourth elevator without the glass windows takes into account those that may have a fear of heights.

Swimming at the InterContinental is a unique experience. The infinity pool on the fifth floor sits on a terrace with a city view and this can be relaxing for both swimmers and those who just want to lounge and enjoy the view. On the same floor and a few steps from the pool is the PS SP restaurant which offers an a la carte menu indoors, by the pool or by the adjoining Zen terrace which is again, very spacious.

Other restaurants include the Ekaabo restaurant on the ground floor which serves all day buffets, the Milano restaurant for Italian cuisine and the Soho restaurant for Chinese fare. Both restaurants are on the third floor either end of the Bellini bar. All three share a foyer. It is the venue for the Saturday fest, a buffet that’s a fusion of Italian and Chinese cuisines. The gastronomic experience is accompanied by a live band and is already a favourite of the Lagos crowd judging by the turnout.

The space in the hotel lobby in front of the Ekaabo restaurant is put to similar use for the Sunday buffet.
It is nice to know that despite the emphasis on size and space, the little details matter. The sofas next to the elevators in the lobby come in handy. The iPod docking station, DVD player, TV with HDMI port and coffeemaker are all nice touches. So too the ironing board with iron and the umbrella in the wardrobe. Being able to get a complimentary copy of THISDAY also ranks high on the list of the little things that mean much.
