No good deed goes unpunished. So when an Ocala Wal-Mart employee chased a a knife-wielding theft suspect across the store parking lot, things ended badly — and not just for the thief.

Cops arrested him and Wal-Mart got their $42.98 pack of golf balls back.

Josh Rutner, who almost got his face slashed in the chase, says he was just doing his job.

Happy ending?

Not quite.

The next day Wal-Mart sent a corporate representative all the way from Arkansas to fire him, reports the Ocala Star Banner.

Apparantly Wal-Mart has a strict no-chase policy that Rutner, who’d only been on the job four months, violated.

“They said this is a non-rehirable offense,” Rutner said. “At the age of 65, I can’t even come back and become a greeter.”

Fair or no?
