North Korea orders artillery to be combat ready, targeting U.S. bases

SEOUL (Reuters) – North Korea said on Tuesday its strategic rocket and long-range artillery units have been ordered to be combat ready, targeting U.S. military bases on Guam, Hawaii and mainland America after U.S. bombers flew sorties threatening the North.

The order, issued in a statement from the North's military "supreme command", marks the latest fiery rhetoric from Pyongyang since the start of joint military drills by U.S. and South Korean forces early this month.

South Korea's defense ministry said it saw no sign of imminent military action by North Korea.

"From this moment, the Supreme Command of the Korean People's Army will be putting into combat duty posture No. 1 all field artillery units, including long-range artillery units and strategic rocket units, that will target all enemy objects in U.S. invasionary bases on its mainland, Hawaii and Guam," the North's KCNA news agency said.

The North previously threatened nuclear attack on the United States and South Korea, although it is not believed to have the capability to hit the continental United States with an atomic weapon. But the U.S. military's bases in the Pacific area are in range of its medium-range missiles.

South Korea's defense ministry said it had detected no signs of unusual activity by the North's military but will monitor the situation. The South and the U.S. military are conducting drills until the end of April, which they have stressed are strictly defensive in nature.

The North has previously threatened to strike back at the U.S. military accusing Washington of war preparations by using B-52 bombers which have flown over the Korean peninsula as part of the drills.

North Korea has said it has abrogated an armistice that ended the 1950-53 Korean War and threatened a nuclear attack on the United States.

Read Time:1 Minute, 20 Second

A young mum told last night how she has five husbands — who are all brothers. Rajo Verma, 21, lives in a one-room shack with all five, sleeping with a different one each night on a rota.
The housewife has no idea which one is the father of her toddler son. She said: “Initially it felt a bit awkward. But I don’t favour one over the other.”

Husband Guddu, 21 — the first to make her his bride —insisted: “We all have sex with her but I’m not jealous. We’re one big happy family.”

The couple got hitched in an arranged Hindu marriage four years ago and he remains her only official spouse.

But the custom in their village is she had to take as husbands his brothers Bajju, 32, Sant Ram, 28, Gopal, 26, and Dinesh — who married her last year when he turned 18.

Eldest brother Bajju said: “I consider her my wife and sleep with her like my brothers.” Rajo cooks, cleans and looks after 18-month-old Jay while her hubbies go out to work in Dehradun, northern India.

She said of the ancient tradition, called polyandry: “My mother was also married to three brothers so when I got wed I knew I had to accept all of them as my husbands.

“I sleep with them in turn. We don’t have beds, just lots of blankets on the floor.

“I get a lot more attention and love than most wives.”

Bangladesh riots death toll hits 45

0 0
Read Time:2 Minute, 8 Second

Dhaka, Bangladesh  — Angry supporters of a Bangladesh Islamist party leader, given the death penalty for a war crimes conviction, continued clashes with police Friday in different districts, pushing the death toll to 45 since demonstrations began, police said.

Dhaka, the capital, was largely peaceful except for small clashes. An uneasy calm prevailed there, with little traffic on the usually bustling city roads.

"We see a long tailback (traffic backup) here in Dhaka almost everyday, but a wave of fear forced people to stay back home at the weekend," said businessman Ariful Islam in the Dhanmondi residential area.

A huge contingent of police and paramilitary troopers was deployed to ward off further violence. Anti-riot police guarded major mosques in Muslim majority Bangladesh on Friday, the weekly holiday.

"The situation is very much under control," the inspector general of Bangladesh police, Hassan Mahmood Khandker, told CNN.

Besides the police, the Rapid Action Battalion and paramilitary troopers from Border Guards of Bangladesh patrolled.

Road and rail communications were seriously disrupted as the protesters blocked highways and rail tracks in many places.

Local police said at least three people were killed in Friday's violence outside Dhaka and five others injured on Thursday succumbed to their injuries.

The 45 dead included five on-duty policemen, according to authorities.

Police feared that the trouble might escalate next week because the Jamaat-e-Islami party announced a 48-hour general strike to begin Sunday. The opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party called a countrywide general strike on Wednesday in protest of what it said were "the killings by police firing" in the recent wave of unrest.

Thirty-seven of the 45 dead were killed Thursday as Jamaat-e-Islami movement supporters clashed with police after the court sentenced Delwar Hossain Sayedee, one of the party's top leaders, to death.

Sayedee, 73, was found guilty of eight counts out of 20 charges involving killings and rapes during the country's war of independence more than four decades ago and was sentenced to hang.

Two International Crimes Tribunals set up by Bangladesh in 2010 were dealing with cases against 13 people.

Separated with the help of India, Bangladesh had been the eastern part of Pakistan until it gained independence in 1971 in a war that claimed between 1 million and 3 million lives.

Jamaat-e-Islami opposed East Pakistan's struggle for independence and has decried what it calls a smear campaign against it. The movement called the trial against Sayedee politically motivated.

All ICT verdicts to remain questionable: Khaleda

0 0
Read Time:5 Minute, 21 Second

She urges govt to stop 'mass killing' forthwith

Accusing the government of completely destroying the environment of justice, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia on Friday said every verdict to be delivered by the International Crimes Tribunals will remain questionable, reports UNB.
"The current government in a fascist style has fully destroyed the atmosphere of justice. Any citizen oppressed by the state and the government has no scope to have justice now. It's also similarly applicable for the trial of crimes against humanity," she said.
"When the Shahbagh protesters demanded execution of all war criminals, the Prime Minister not only supported it in parliament, but also urged the judges of the tribunals to deliver their verdicts considering the demand of the demonstrators," Khaleda said slamming the Prime Minister.
She went on: "In a democratic country, such appeal is unprecedented. With this, the last hope of getting justice has been denied. Under the present circumstances, no judge of the tribunals will be able to deliver verdict or conduct trial process impartially and independently. So, any of the verdicts of the tribunals will remain questionable."
Khaleda, also the leader of the opposition, brought the allegation at a crowded press conference at her Gulshan office.
The opposition BNP arranged the press conference in the wake of violent situation in the country following the ICT-1 verdict against Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee.
Referring to Thursday's widespread killings of common people and Jamaat-Shibir activists by law enforcers and 'ruling party cadres, Khaleda said, "It's beyond our imagination that a government can carry out genocide against its own people."
Over 40 people were killed and many more injured in widespread hartal violence across the country following the verdict of the International Crimes Tribunal-1 against Jamaat leader Delwar Hossain Sayedee on Thursday.
Earlier, on the same day, in its first judgment, the ICT-1 condemned Delwar Hossain Sayedee, nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, to death for his crimes against humanity during the Liberation War 42 years ago.
"I'm dump-founded, aggrieved, shocked and I've no word to condemn and protest such incident… people are being killed by firing like birds. The government has resorted to heinous violent measures of mass killing. We had liberated the country standing against such genocide during 1971. We can't accept that any government in this independent country will resort to mass killing on any pretext," the former premier said.
Khaleda urged the government to stop such 'mass killing' forthwith, or else, she warned, the government will have to face dire consequences.
"We can't sit as silent spectators at a time when the government has resorted to genocide. I'm urging country's people to take to the streets to protest the government's anti-people activities," said Khaleda Zia.
She urged the government and the administration not to try obstruct any peaceful protest programme of people. "I say, don't fire even a single shoot. We'll build a strong resistance on the streets together with people if (govt) resorts to the path of repression and oppression further."
She also called upon the law enforcement agencies, including police, Rab and BGB, not to use their weapons indiscriminately against the people with whose money the arms were procured. "Your sacred duty is to save public life and property, not to take away their lives… I urge you to stand beside people to save their democratic and basic human rights."
Mentioning that the country is in a deep crisis, she said the whole nation has been divided. Country's majority people's religion Islam and our great independence have been brought face to face in a planned way. The people of Bangladesh are as independence-loving as religious ones. They won't tolerate any attack either on religion and or on independence."
She alleged that a quarter in the name of implementing the spirit of the liberation war is involved in spreading slanders against the Almighty Allah, Islam and the greatest prophet Mohammad (SM). "It's naturally hurt the religious sentiment of the country's majority people."
The BNP chief lamented that the government has brutally tortured and killed religious people as they took to the streets protesting the negative campaign.
She alleged that the government high-ups are inspiring such killings and torture instead of taking steps for trial and investigation of the incidents.
Apparently pointing finger at Ganajagaran Manch at Shahbagh and other parts of the country, Khaleda said the government is pampering a quarter–which is regularly spreading hatred and malice– in committing unlawful and provocative activities.
Accusing the government of putting the national security at stake by dividing the nation, she said every citizen of the country is now worried.
She claimed that the government has lost all moral grounds to remain in office by supporting the demonstrators' pressure on the trial process, pushing the nation towards conflict through dividing them and carrying out barbaric killings.
Mentioning that the country will be pushed towards a grave danger, the BNP chief said, "We demand resignation of this killer and blood-hungry government immediately."
Khaleda reiterated that her party wants the trial of those committed crimes against humanity. "But the trial has to be transparent maintaining national-international standard. We are not in favour of making political gains in the name of the trial."
Question has been raised against the trial and its law, she said adding, "We repeatedly warned that questionable trial won't help unite the nation; it'll rather divide it. A national consensus is required in this regard. But the government didn't pay heed to us. Instead, those who advocated for removing the loopholes of the trial process, the government branded them as anti-liberation forces."
She accused the government of attacking the minority communities in a planned way with an aim to destroy the persisting religious harmony and divert people's movement to a different direction.
Suggesting the government refrain from such suicidal conspiracy, Khaleda urged the country's people to remain alert so that no one can destroy the religious harmony.

Korean firm gets 70% of Egbin power plant

0 0
Read Time:3 Minute, 27 Second

The National Council on Privatisation on Thursday approved the sale of 70 per cent of the Federal Government’s stake in the Egbin Power Plc, Lagos.

The Chairman of the council’s Technical Sub-committee, Mr. Atedo Peterside, disclosed this to State House correspondents at the end of its meeting presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo.

Peterside said the plant would be sold to KEPCO for $407.3m.

He recalled that the transaction was conceived in 2007 when the Federal Government initially agreed to sell 51 per cent of the plant.

Peterside said, “What we have done today (Thursday), after negotiations and approval by the NCP, is to agree to sell 70 per cent of the plant to KEPCO, which is a South Korean company.

“KEPCO will pay $407.3m. At the time the transaction was done in 2007, Egbin was valued at $549m and they actually paid a deposit of 10 per cent of the amount based on that valuation.

“Based on that valuation, we have agreed to more or less ratify that previous transaction. But we have done the valuation and increased the transaction cost, and they are paying a larger sum of money. The evaluation that we have done with Egbin at a value of $670m is higher than the original evaluation of $549m.

“In total, they are going to pay $407m to the Federal Government and the evaluation was comparable to the evaluation that was done for Geregu, Sapele and Ugheli Power plants.”

Peterside said the government also resolved to sell the Omotosho and Olorunsogo Power plants to the Chinese companies that built them.

He recalled that the plants were already under construction at the time the government decided to privatise the power sector; therefore, a decision was taken that the construction firms should be given rights of first refusal to buy the plants.

Under this arrangement, he added that the firms would pay the balance of the money the government had already paid them for the construction.

With this transaction, Peterside said every power plant now had a core investor except for Afam.

The Minister of Communications Technology, Mrs. Omobolanle Johnson, said the NCP approved a reform bill for the Nigeria Postal Service to make it perform better in postal regulation and operating activities, and contribute more to the nation’s Gross Domestic Product.

She said the bill would be sent to the Federal Executive Council for deliberation and transmission to the National Assembly.

The Minister of Mine and Steel Development, Mr. Musa Sada, said the NCP deliberated on the report on the progress being made by the Attorney-General of the Federation, Mr. Muhammed Adoke, on the issue of arbitration that was delaying the privatisation of the Ajaokuta Steel Plant and Aluminium Smelter Company of Nigeria.

Sada said progress was being made in the efforts aimed at reaching an out-of-court settlement.

He said, “We are beginning to see that very soon, we are likely to conclude some of those issues, such that the BPE will take full charge of these two important facilities and ensure they are appropriately privatised, not the way it happened before that is now putting us into these issues.

“This time, it will be in such a way that they will come back to contribute the way that they are expected to as major industrial backbone of the Nigerian economy.”

The Acting Director-General, Bureau of Public Enterprises, Mr. Benjamin Dikki, said the council also considered and recommended five bills in the transport sector for the ratification of the Federal Executive Council and onward transmission to the National Assembly.

Also on Thursday, Amperium Consortium, presented a confirmation of payment of $33m, including local component of N519.12m into the bank account of the BPE.

The payment was the 25 per cent down payment required for the consortium to acquire 51 per cent of the Geregu Power Plant.

The bid winners for the power plants were earlier given 15 days within which to make the down payment.

Amperium Consortium was the first to make the payment.

Iranian Shiite Spies Arrested in Nigeria By SSS.

Read Time:2 Minute, 21 Second

The Nigerian State Security Service, SSS, has arrested a network of Iranian sponsored terrorists that are planning to cause havoc in the Country.

The SSS paraded three of the suspects, including a 50-year old Shiite leader, for allegedly spying for Iran.
Though other members of the spy ring are at large, the SSS however captured some of Berende's accomplices including Olayinka Saka and Saheed Aderemi Adewumi.

Marilyn Ogar, the Deputy Director in charge of Public Relations said that “as a result of painstaking investigations, which lasted six months, the service arrested one of them, an indigene of Ilorin, Kwara State on Dec. 17, 2012, for involvement in espionage and terrorist activities.’’

Ogar said the suspect confessed that he was recruited by `some Iranian elements’ during his studies in Iran in 2011 and that he was trained in the use of AK 47 rifle and pistols.

She said the suspect confessed that he was trained in the production and detonation of Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and tasked to establish a terrorist cell in the South-Western part of Nigeria with particular emphasis on Lagos.

According to Ogar, the suspect’s Iranian sponsors requested him to identifies and gather intelligence on public places and prominent hotels frequented by Americans and Israelis to facilitate attacks.

She said the suspect also confessed to being charged with the responsibility of providing specific details on some organisations belonging to America and Israel in Lagos.

“He said he was tasked to provide names of prominent Nigerians “who if attacked could unsettle the West,’’ Ogar said, adding that he gave them Gen. Ibrahim Babangida and former Sultan Ibrahim Dasuki’s names.

“He also said that his Iranian handlers directed him to secure their communications by using codes to represent the targets, such as Uncle for Israel and Aunt for America.

She said that the suspect claimed to have received a total of 24,000 dollars and 3,500 Euros between 2011 and April 2012 from his sponsors.

According to Ogar, the money was to enable him relocate from Ilorin to Lagos to set up business, process visa and for his personal upkeep.

She said the suspect recruited three other suspects, one of who is now at large, in his bid to set up a terrorist cell in Lagos.

Ogar said the suspects were involved in activities that threatened national security, adding that they would soon be charged to court.

The suspected Shiite leader, however, denied being a terrorist.

He said he had no link with any terrorist group and that he was not working against the interest of the nation, but admitted he had an Iranian business partner.

“Every Nigerian should watch out for people hunting for individuals in Nigeria,’’ he said.

European Union slaps more sanctions on North Korea

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 0 Second

BRUSSELS (Codewit) — The European Union imposed trade and economic sanctions on North Korea while condemning "in the strongest terms" the nation's latest nuclear test.

The 27 EU finance ministers also demanded North Korea abstain from further tests and urged it to sign the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty without delay. The statement came as the ministers met Monday in Brussels.

Their action brings the number of North Koreans subject to a travel ban and an asset freeze to 26, and the number of sanctioned companies to 33. The ministers also banned the export of components for ballistic missiles, such as certain types of aluminum, and prohibited trade in new public bonds from North Korea.

The United States is currently negotiating in the Security Council for stronger U.N. sanctions against Pyongyang after the council quickly condemned the Feb. 12 atomic blast, the third conducted by the North since 2006.

North Korea says its nuclear program is a response to what it called a U.S. threat and has warned of further, unspecified measures of "greater intensity" if Washington remains hostile — possibly signaling it would conduct further tests if sanctions are tightened further.

Masturbation contest held in China

0 0
Read Time:55 Second

It's tempting to say everyone in this contest is a loser — no matter who finishes first.

However, the organizers of China's first World AIDS Day Masturbation Contest say they're just celebrating HIV risk-free sexual freedom, according to Shanghaiist.

The website dubbed the Dec. 1 contest a "Wankathon," though it should not be confused with San Francisco's annual Masturbate-a-thon.

Sex toy manufacturer Aihuirun.com sponsored the event, but there was no full-frontal nudity.

The ten male participants wore masks and hid their genitals with orange buckets that would later reveal the fruits of their labor. To keep enthusiasm up for the contestants, scantily clad models danced around with sex toys and blow-up dolls, Shanghaiist reports.

The current World Record holder of the "Longest Time Spent Masturbating" is pornstar Sonny Nash, who pleasured himself for an impressive 10 hours and 10 minutes in May, 2012.

10 male participants wore masks to hide their identities and hid their genitals with buckets where they would eventually ejaculate into.
