The CIA has been delivering weapons to rebels in Syria over the past two weeks, with contributions of vehicles and other equipment from the State Department, The Washington Post is reporting.
U.S. officials are hoping the donations will boost the muscle of the rebel fighters in Syria's 2 1/2-year civil war, according to the Post.
A press duty officer at the State Department said no one had yet seen the piece and there was no immediate comment. No one could be reached at CIA headquarters late Wednesday night. No one could be reached at the White House press office late Wednesday either.
The word comes as an opinion piece by Russian President Vladimir Putin in The New York Times claims that "there is every reason to believe" that it was the Syrian rebels and not the Syrian military who used poison gas on civilians. It also comes after months of lags in promised non-lethal aid to the rebels, slowed by the complications of making deliveries to a war zone, according to the Post.
