(NEWSER) – Police in Australia have recovered the body of a swimmer snatched from a river by a crocodile in front of horrified friends. The body of the 26-year-old was found near where he was last seen in the Mary River yesterday, and police shot a 16-foot saltwater croc believed to have been the attacker, reports the NT News.
A police spokesman says alcohol may have played a role in the man's decision to ignore warning signs at a popular camping spot and try to swim across the river with a friend. "The Mary River is known worldwide to have the greatest saturation of adult saltwater crocodiles in the world," the spokesman tells the AP. "You don't swim in the Mary River."
