Coach Stephen Keshi announced his 23-man squad for the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations Wednesday in Portugal. His wards were paraded in a friendly against Nations Cup bound debutantes, Cape Verde that same day.
Although the match ended 0-0, most Nigerians were not comfortable with the performance of the Super Eagles, particularly in the opening period, a former Super Eagles goalkeeper trainer, Coach Joe Erico has said Nigerians should not judge the Eagles by their performance on Wednesday.
“There was nothing at stake and both teams are preparing for the same tournament.,” Erico started. “I don’t think the coaches would want to bring out all they had, in terms of tactics.”
The former Nigeria international believed the Nigerian players were only being cautious in their approach. Said he, “from what I saw of the two teams, everybody is up and doing but they had to guide against injury and definitely, as a coach, you can’t let the cat out of the bag in a friendly so close to a major tournament, We have to be patient and wait until the tournament begins,” Erico counseled.
