Presidential aspirants approve voter list ahead of April 25 poll

0 0
Read Time:1 Minute, 8 Second

A Malian former general working for the International Organisation of la Francophonie (OIF), Siaka Sangare, , announced the decision in Lome.

"The current state of the voters list is good enough for the 2015 vote," Sangare said.

The French-speaking nations group has worked with election organisers to address opposition complaints that election lists included numerous duplicates, potentially favouring President Faure Gnassingbe.

The president, who took over when his father died after 38 years in power, is favourite to secure a third term having already won elections in 2005 and 2010.

OIF's Sangare admitted that the list was not perfect but it has been approved by representatives of all the candidates.

"I think the list is satisfactory,’’ he said.

The vote was originally scheduled for April 15 but was delayed by 10 days after the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) called for the lists to be revised.

The updated list has just over 3.5 million potential voters. The last census, carried out in 2010, showed that Togo's population was around 6 million.

One of the problems found was that over 24,500 voter cards bore exactly the same number but had different names.

Experts also found that 291,907 cards had been linked to polling stations that did not correspond to where voters had registered.

In the wake of the Garissa University attack which claimed the lives of 148 students, 5 suspects accused of supplying weapons to the al-Shabab gunmen have appeared in court.

According to Al Jazeera, the suspects were arraigned in a Nairobi court on Tuesday, with the prosecutor granted an additional 30 days to investigate their actions.

Meanwhile, the Kenyan government published a list of groups it considered "terrorist" organisations and a list of entities it suspects of being associated with al-Shabab on Tuesday night.

The Kenyan government also listed 86 entities including businessmen, money-transfer companies, bus companies that operate between Nairobi and the country's northeast, Muslim clerics and a Muslim human rights organisation.

Following this, the government froze the accounts of the suspected individuals in addition to suspending the licences of 13 Somali money-transfer firms.

Meanwhile, 3 days of mourning officially came to an end on Tuesday night, when hundreds of people attended a vigil in Nairobi's Freedom Park, where an interim shrine of crosses and candles had been set up.

Attendees of the event also included survivors from last Thursday's attack.

Over 200 witch doctors rounded up in Tanzania

Read Time:56 Second

Over 200 witch doctors have been rounded up in Tanzania as part of a campaign against the wave of murders and attacks targeted on albinos.

The operation was carried out in several regions in the East African country that saw about 225 unlicensed traditional healers and soothsayers. This operation will be extended to cover all 30 regions of the country.

The arrests comes only a few days after the President Jakaya Kikwete remarked about the attacks against albinos saying they were “disgusting and a big embarrassment for the nation”.

At least 76 albinos have been killed since 2000 for diabolical purposes with dismember body parts going for around $600 and full bodies going for as much as $75,000. Another 34 albinos have survived attacks after their body parts have been caught up with almost half that number in cases of graves of albinos being dug up.

Albinism is only a genetic and hereditary condition where a person has little or no pigmentation in their skin, eyes, and hair. There is a high number of albinos in Tanzania mostly caused by in-breeding.
