Why should Her Excellency, Joyce Banda, President of Malawi, kneel to greet fellow Heads of State as shown below? Is it because they are whites? Or because they are men, and her tradition requires her to kneel to greet men? Does the position of president of a country recognize gender? In international relations, whoever is the political head of a country, whether male or female, represents the sovereignty of the people of the country.
The position does not recognize gender. By kneeling to greet fellow heads of state, President Joyce Banda has, by so doing, brought the people of her country to their kneels in utter supplication to the people of those other nations represented by their heads of state. The action of President Joyce Banda is a diplomatic howler! What kind of inferiority complex is this? Africa wake up, rise up and take pride of place in the comity of nations.
