Nigeria: Abuja Hosts Korean Taekwondo Championship

taekwando (Codewit)Korean cultural centre in Nigeria in collaboration with the Nigeria Taekwondo Federation has concluded arrangements to organise the second edition of the Korean Ambassador’s International Taekwondo Championship, from 2nd -5th December, 2010 at the indoor sports hall of the National Stadium.

Director of Korean cultural centre, Suh Jeong Sun said the international championship will attract athletes from Nigeria, Republic of Benin, Mali, Cameroon, Niger and Gabon.

“The championship is to serve as a stepping stone to further facilitate the progress of taekwondo demonstration in the West African sub-region. A demonstration by the Taekwondo teams of the Korean cultural centre and French international school will be a great opportunity to savour the exquisite techniques and movements of Taekwondo.”

Sun said the championship, which will be held annually, will contribute immensely to the development of Taekwondo in Nigeria and West Africa. “We will donate world class Taekwondo kits to primary schools in Nigeria. Also, in collaboration with the ministry of sports, bring two experienced coaches from Korea to train the Nigerian national Taekwondo team for London 2012 Olympic Games.”

Jeong, who believes that Nigeria can win gold in Taekwondo at the Olympics considering the talents that are abound in the country, said it is the intention of the Korean cultural centre to bring experienced Taekwondo coaches to train primary and secondary school students in Nigeria. “By helping to develop Taekwondo in West Africa, we hope that diplomatic, cultural and overall multilateral relations between Korea and West African countries would be greatly strengthened,” he added.

The director of Korean cultural centre in Nigeria stated further that this year’s competition will further promote Taekwondo’s educational values and philosophy of fair-play among athletes from different African countries and sustain the Taekwondo spirit of humility, discipline, perseverance and protection.

The championship which is being sponsored by LG Electronics, is expected to cost more than $30,000. Prizes to be won includes 64 medals for men and women in the kyorugi category, 6 medals in the poomsae category, best team trophy and the most valuable players award.

Taekwondo is a Korean traditional martial art that is one of Asia oldest, dating back to over 2, 000 years. Taekwondo debuted as a global demonstration sport at the 1988 summer Olympics in Seoul, and was made an official sport for the competition for the first time at the 2000 Sydney Olympics. It featured in Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and will be among the sports to be competed for at the 2012 London Olympics Games.
