Governors of the South-east geopolitical zone yesterday in Enugu rose in total condemnation of last Thursday’s foiled attempt by a pro-Biafra secessionist group, Biafra Zionist Federation (BZF) to re-declare the Biafran republic.

Addressing journalists at the end of a four-hour closed door meeting at the Enugu Government House, the chairman of the forum and Abia state governor, Theodore Orji said the attempt was an insult on the collective psyche of the Igbo people of the South-east.
At least two persons including a police sergeant and a civilian were last Thursday killed when members of the BZF stormed Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) to allegedly declare a state of Biafra.

The leader of the group and London trained lawyer, Ben Igwe Onwuka, who had earlier been declared wanted by the police for the March 7 invasion of Enugu State Government House, was however arrested by the police along other 12 suspects even as many escaped.

Onwuka and his group allegedly forced themselves into the radio station before 5a.m., entered the studio and demanded to make a broadcast to allegedly declare the  independence of Biafra.

However, at the end of their meeting which was attended by Govenors of Ebonyi, Martin Elechi, Enugu, Sullivan Chime and Deputy Governors of Anambra, Nkem Okeke, and Imo, Eze Madumere, the governors dissociated themselves from the purported move by the group.

The governors further resolved to continue to collaborate with each other in the area of security.
They also commiserated with the families of the late Justice Chukwudifu Oputa as well as Prof. Dora Akunyili over the demise of the former Supreme Court Jurist and former Minister of Information respectively and pledged their readiness to participate actively in their burials. The governors also commiserated with the people of Kano Emirate and the Government of Kano state on the death of the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero.

They however denied knowledge of the emergence of a new Emir and former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi.
