The United Nations (UN) in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) says a South African peacekeeper has been wounded by shells fired by the M23 rebel group near Goma.
A spokesperson for the UN force, MONUSCO, says the South African and two Tanzanian soldiers were wounded when M23 mortar shells struck their positions around 4 kilometres north of Goma.
Meanwhile, the SA National Defence Force has denied reports that South African troops have clashed with the rebels in the DRC.
However, military union SANDU's Tim Flack says they've received reports that South African troops have been engaged in at least two incidents with rebel forces.
He says South African troops apparently eliminated a rebel machine gun nest, hampering their advance, and returned mortar fire.
Meanwhile on Friday last week, President Jacob Zuma has informed Parliament that 1345 soldiers have been deployed to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Presidency said.
"Our soldiers are doing exceptionally well in the continent. We congratulate them and assure them of the support of their compatriots as they continue to contribute to the building of a better Africa, as a force for peace," Zuma said in a statement. "We are very proud of them and their contribution to African renewal and development."
