Well known political commentator and academic Professor Adam Habib has officially been inaugurated as the vice chancellor of Wits University.
He told guests in the Wits Great Hall that he would make the university more accessible to the previously disadvantaged.
Habib says the university will continue to invite high school learners from rural areas to attend its academic programmes.
“Merit is still retained. Fully-funded scholarships will be given to ensure that talented students from economically-marginalised communities are also given access to Wits,” he added.
Habib was appointed as rector of the University of the Witwatersrand in February.
He also served as executive director of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) from 2004 to 2007, and has worked as a research director for the Centre for Civil Society at the University of Nata
