A 21-year-old student, Obiechina Chikeluba, has been arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, for allegedly defrauding a Briton of N20 million in an internet romance scam.

Chikeluba, a student of Federal Science and Technical College, Yaba, Lagos, was said to have met his victim, Kieran Oakes, on Facebook.

Vanguard gathered that the suspect, assuming the profile of an American, Lisa Jackson, entered into a relationship with Oakes, with the pair agreeing to get married.

EFCC disclosed that in the course of their relationship, ‘Jackson,’ at various times, collected money to the tune of £54,000, which current value is N20 million, from Oakes, to enable him travel to the UK to meet her.

Spokesman of EFCC, Wilson Uwujaren, said the victim, after endless wait for her supposed fiancé, discovered that he had been duped and reportedly sent a petition to EFCC.

Wilson added that operatives of the commission, in a sting operation on February 24, in Lagos, arrested the suspect while he was attempting to collect a parcel sent to him.

“He will appear in court as soon as investigation is concluded,” he stated.
