The paramount ruler of Okpuno town in Awka, Anambra State, Igwe Sunday Isaac Okafor, has lauded the state Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, on the reconstruction of the Opkuno-Isu Bridge which was destroyed during the Nigerian Civil War about 44 years ago.
The Igwe said this Wednesday when the National Good Governance Tour visited the road which led to Achala local government area, said to be the food basket of the state.
The bridge was said to have been reconstructed at the cost of N220 million.
The royal father who recounted the difficulty of his subjects in crossing the roads during the raining season, expressed deep appreciation to the government over the landmark achievement.
“This bridge was destroyed during the civil war, and the community is happy with the government for reconstructing the bridge, I usually receive uninvited visitors in my house during the raining season when there were able to cross the road,” the royal father said.
Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, lauded the landmark development of the state government.
He stated that democracy was the best system of government, even though it may be quarrelsome because people scramble to be elected into offices.
“This is democracy at work, the bridge was brought down in a war created by soldiers, because if they didn’t bring down the first republic, Opara could have built more bridges than all the other people that came after,” he said.
Earlier, during the courtesy visit to Obi at the Government House, Maku called on media practitioners to report developmental activities of the government, rather than devoting attention to political reportage.
He said it was important for the media to showcase government’s modest efforts in making life better for the people.
“The media must be focus more attention and resources to developmental issues, they should enlighten the people to take ownership of the various projects scattered around the country,” he said.
